Update on mom's hospitalisation
Posted 14 years agoThankfully the situation has improved quite a lot after a significant turn for the worse last night.
My mother's fever suddenly shot up to dangerous levels, worsened by a pretty bad pain in the chest. Which freaked everyone here out since that exactly paralleled what happened to my father before he wound up in the ICU.
Fortunately the electrocardiogram came up clean, so the pain in the chest was likely caused by stress (since my mom was present during the whole incident with my dad she noticed the parallels too and freaked out), and her fever went down again quickly.
She's doing better now, and the antibiotics treatment seems to be working, and if the situation keeps improving as it's going now, the doctors expect she can leave the hospital next monday.
Can't say how glad I am that the situation turned out a lot less bad than I feared, and thanks everyone for the support! *hugs*
UPDATE
While things are going quite well, my mom has not yet been released from the hospital.
Doctors discovered that the infection was a variety of Streptococcus, which is both quite hard to get out of someone and can lead to very nasty complications (especially in people with health-issues like diabetes) if not treated quickly and well. Since she's in the hospital getting treatment there isn't any reat threat at this point, fortunately.
The doctors are going to do an echocardiograph make sure the Streptococcus aren't on her heart muscle/heart valve causing/having caused damage. Since mom's heart-readings are fine and there's no trace of heart-damage in her blood, the doctors consider it a 'covering all bases' effort more than anything else. However, this can lead to two things;
One, echo is clear, mom can go home thursday of next week
Two, they do find the Streptococcus on her heart, and while that's no immediate danger as she's being treated, it means she'll be stuck in the hospital for 6 additional weeks.
Not much to say other than fingers crossed, I guess. Happy that the real risk has been averted, but it would be even better if she can get home soon (also for herself since she's already bored out of her mind at the hospital).

Well, that's absolutely smashing :(
Posted 14 years agoWell, almost exactly a year after my father wound up in the Intensive Care and only barely getting out of it again, now my mother has to stay at the hospital (though in the normal wards, thank god).
Situation seems stable right now - the doctors suspect some kind of infection, they suspect it to be related to her left leg (history of trouble with thrombosis and type 1 diabetes-complications), but it might also be pneumonia.
She's getting a antibiotics-treatment now and seems stable, but it's still simply hoping that the situation won't degrade the way it happened to my dad as well.
So yeah, nervous as hell...

MUCH overdue vacation journal
Posted 15 years agoI've finally managed to get some time to type out a little journal on my USA round-trip.
Let's start off by saying that I've had an absolutely awesome time there, and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing a lot of the country. Still getting to grips with how insanely huge the US are. Combined, the total distance me and
kadath drove would cover a significant section of Europe (as in, a trip from Utrecht, NL, to Paris, Berlin, Rome AND London, and back to Utrecht again would be less) XD
Spent plenty of time in Boise, spending time with
kadath,
mokuseikaze,
missangelab and
ashadan, and having them show me around. Never really got around to that last year since it was so hot then that even moving a finger would hit you with heat-exhaustion ;P
Lost of fun was had with watching old horror-flicks about, for example, ninja-zombies with bad make-up, and making a Mii for me (who wound up looking distinctly psychotic) on the Wii, or going to the flying M for coffee (or my very first furmeet, which was great, too :D). If not that, lots of chatting and and making merry :)
Angel teaching me how to make proper scrumbled eggs was quite memorable, and I even managed to do it again at home without burning down the neighbourhood, and going to the university with Moku was also an interesting experience - as well as a good opportunity to learn to drive an automatic (used to driving stick, so I kept kicking for a pedal that wasn't there if I had to slow down, resulting in kicking on the brake unintentionally). Seeing Ash prepare for a gig was fun as well, even if my tone-deafness showed really badly :P
After departing from Boise after the first week, I did see a lot; the space needle in Seattle, as well as a Sci-fi museum right next to it with lots of old movie-props, or hanging around with
slash0x (and getting a really good yogurt-based snack at the local mall of which I totally forgot the name).
San Francisco with the piers, street performers, museums, jazz and lots of chocolate (and staying in a hotel that felt distinctly haunted). Las Vegas with all the neon (and totally not lucking out in the casino :P), and even staying at the Luxor which was really neat - and fortunately not much Fear & Loathing. And then there was Phoenix, hanging around with the the
baddragon crew and watching bad movies (troll 2 and lady terminator instantly come to mind) and a few surprisingly good ones (like Hardware, which I hated after seeing it long ago, but was actually really good.) as well as going on scavenger-hunts for more movies and old, forgotten comics.
Met a lot of interesting people during the trip apart from the people I've mentioned, but due to my exceedingly poor memory for names, here's an all-encompassing 'thank you!' to everyone :)
Glad to have had Kad around from the first minute after arrival too - rental company tried to stick me with a much bigger, more expensive car which I wouldn't have picked up on since a car with the same name in europe is just a standard 4-door sedan, not a SUV. And there's ofcourse the driving, and 'keeping me alive and out of the usual tourist traps' ;) The long drives definitely granted the time for lots of discussions on Alien life, music (general or game-music), life as a whole and the American Dream (as it, what is that, anyway?) ;)
Also had my first 'getting in a minor accident' experience after getting in a snowstorm (which was a first in of itself) and flying off the road after hitting an unexpected ice-patch and getting stranded in a town in the middle of nowhere. First hotel was horrid and would have likely caused Shining-like behaviour in us, but the second hotel was a lot better, got to watch quite a bunch of old, classic movies (12 angry men, little ceasar, to kill a mockingbird), and have a good rest.
It was also quite an experience to celebrate Thanksgiving at Angel's family. It's the first non-Dutch holiday I've ever participated in, and it was a very good experience. Wonderful food, great company and just having an awesome time :)
And now I'm back in the Netherlands for a few weeks, struggled through the jetlag, and the trip already seems too long ago. Time really does fly when you're having fun, and even with getting snowed-in it feels like the shortest almost-4 weeks I've ever had. :)

Busy busy busy, and YAY! USA trip! :D
Posted 15 years agoGood lord recent times have been hectic.
Despite not having properly finished my Masters in translation, I now have a steady job at a translation agency. I initially was juggling two jobs (this one and my job at a local supermarket), but this left me with so little time I wasn't even able to properly work on my thesis (aggravated by the teacher supposed to guide me through the process not responding to me until only a week ago), not to mention a near-total lack of free time.
I was pretty much getting caught up in wayyy too much at once (including wages-issues), but now everything finally seems to be settled :D
Last couple of weeks I have been working full-time to get extra funds up for the nearly month-long trip (or rather journey) I will be going on in a few days - so right now I'm busy with preparations and attempting to stuff half of my earthly possessions in a suitcase as well as making sure all my flight-neccessities are in order.
Right now I'm at the 'getting nervous, but excited in a positive way' stage; looking forward to the trip itself and arriving at my destination, nervous about all the hoops I'll have to jump through at customs/security upon setting foot in the US.
It's all worth it though, not just for the round-trip I'll be going on, but also because I'll be meeting
kadath (who will also be my guide during the round-trip),
Ashadan,
mokuseikaze and
missangelab again :D
This is the biggest and longers trip I've ever been on, but the knowledge that I won't be all by my onesies really helps with any worries I might have (and I tend to as I'm something of a worry-wart).
So yeah, a lot happend, but I have a trip only a few days away that I'm looking forward to like I never have to anything else before :D

Interesting Times
Posted 15 years agoWell, my life has certainly taken a number of turns in the last 6-odd months, including a fair number I couldn't have foreseen.
I'm almost done with my Masters-degree in Translation, having only standing my thesis standing in-between me and my degree certificate, and unlike a number of my fellow students, I've actually already decided on a subject and made a start, so at least I'm getting somewhere with that.
I've also finished my internship with flying colours (much to my own amazement) - and here's where one of the main unexpected turns is coming from. I entered into the internship being informed, and knowing full-well that the chance of getting an actual job out of it were minimal. Turns out I got an actual job out of it XD
I was expecting that I'd be working on a freelance basis where translation was concerned for at least a couple of years (due to companies rarely taking fresh-off-the-university people because of lack of experience), when my now-boss unexpectedly called about a month after finishing my internship. Long story short, I got a job-offer, and just signed my contract today. Not only that, but my boss is going on vacation, meaning I'm basically running the translation company for the next two weeks apart from finances/book-keeping.
Not sure how I feel about that - honoured and exhilarated on the one hand, but hugely apprehensive on the other. Apparently everyone has more faith in me than I have...ah well. I'll see how it goes and in worst-case panic-scenarios I know how to reach my boss to go HEEELP! XP
Another unexpected turn was that I'm actually getting a quite significant chance to try my hand at being an actual writer and have more people then only a few close friends read my stuff. Admittedly it's something I'm both grateful for, and apprehensive. Only letting people you're close to read your stuff is quite nice and safe, but it also doesn't really get you anywhere...most of the time anyway since the chance actually grew from that (you know who you are ;D)
I'm also surprised at how many people I've got nudging me to finish the book I'm currently working on (which at moment of this journal is over 200 full A4 pages with standard Times New Roman/font size 12). It's something I definitely want to get it finished, if only to prove myself I can write a bookall the way through - if it actually winds up published it'd be a nice bonus :)
I also have plenty to look forward to this year; I want to push to actually finish the book so it's ready for revision and everything, I'm going to build a new computer after 5 years of loyal service of my current one, and last but certainly not least (more like saving best for last :D) if all goes well, I'll be going on a round trip of the western United States.
So yeah, just as the title said, quite interesting times for me :)

She's a really great artists and a nice person, and any help or supporting words will be greatly appreciated :)
Thanks all!
Posted 15 years agoI want to thank everyone for all the watches, favs and whatnot I got while still moving everything around.
I'll probably be posting some more in a while, and maybe start taking the journal more serious as opposed to like one journal each year XP
Take care, all!
