Nom nom nomination season
General | Posted 8 years agoCurrently there are three fandom-related awards open for nominations, two of which are writing specific but one is for all kinds of fandom media. Even if you don't nominate me, please help recognize our fandom creators.
They are:
The Leo Awards - Ends Feb 1st.
Ursa Major Awards - Ends Feb 15.
The Coyotl Awards - Ends March 15th. Only FWG members can submit nominations.
Eligible works from me:
Anthologies:
Intimate Little Secrets (FurPlanet Productions)
Short stories:
"As the Paint Dries" - Intimate Little Secrets (FurPlanet Productions)
"Rickety V" - Intimate Little Secrets (FurPlanet Productions)
"Blessed Are the Meek" - Bleak Horizons (FurPlanet Productions)
(Intimate Little Secrets had three other stories that are eligible, but I honestly don't want thos enominated; they're not good enough, IMO. The above I consider my best showing that qualifies.)

Post-Project Depression
General | Posted 8 years agoI haven't written a single thing in over a month, and barely edited more than that. The writing Twitter account I keep has been RTs only.
There's something I've been wrestling with that I wasn't sure if I was going to talk about at all. Maybe a little bit of it is shame, but mainly it's because I'm afraid of the impression it might give off, of how people might take it. But we're supposed to be open about our mental health issues, right?
The reason is that no one seems to care about my book. To my understanding, Intimate Little Secrets did not sell well at the con I launched it at, and I'm only certain that ten copies have been sold. It's not just the sales though--that's nice, but honestly, it's the silence that cuts I know of only one person currently reading it. Meanwhile, people seem really enthusiastic about Kismet. Multiple times I've wondered "what's the point" of continuing to write if no one's going to read it. It doesn't help that I've been able to see a therapist this last month due to scheduling issues, leaving me adrift and so far unable to get back on the horse.
See how whiny that sounds? "Wahh no one is giving me attention, that other guy's thing is getting all the love. Buy my book, make me feel better." That's what kept me quiet, because that's not the message here. This isn't a cry for attention or a guilt trip.
Creators put a lot of themselves into a thing, and if you get nothing back, it hurts. There's nothing else that can be done to a project once it's out of your hands, and now that something big is "gone", that can leave you feeling empty too. You must gird yourself.
There are lots of factors of what could be going on, why there's low sales, and of course there's low feedback. On the other hand, Like it's short stories instead of a longer piece, it's erotica instead of clean so people aren't that keen to talk about it openly, etc. That's been clear with the anthologies I've put out, but this is the first time since H&L that I've put something out that's just me. When H&L came out, it was one of only three straight erotica books sold at cons, so it sold decently, but more importantly, it was my first anything so I was so euphoric. Here I had thought that I had built up enough of a fanbase, but, no.
There'll probably be another blog post once I have a talk with the new therapist. For now though, all I can hope for is that I won't regret sharing this out loud.

Pulp!, anthology, 4 stars.
Argo, short story, 5 stars.

While not fandom works, these are none the less furry, and so I wanted to point you to these.
The Builders, novella, 5 stars.
Barsk, the Elephant Graveyard, novel, 5 stars.

My Collection is Coming
General | Posted 9 years agoMy short story collection, Intimate Little Secrets, is nearly here. It sat on the back burner for many years, then last month received one intense workout. Now it's slated for release at Texas Furry Fiesta at the end of March, where I will be signing copies, reading from one of the stories, and sitting on panels.
To give a bit of details about the collection:
Word count: 46,231.
5 new stories (Including a sequel to "Missed")
4 reprints (3 of which you can find here, and "TLC" you can only find in Heat #12)
There's also a lovely introduction by Robert Baird.
Finally, a species breakdown. I'm only including main characters, not side characters.
Ringtail/Cacomistle: 2
Chipmunk: 1
Serval: 2
Mink: 3
Gazelle: 1
Deer: 1
Canine: 2 (Border collie, Golden Retriever)
Fox: 2
Wolf: 1
Skunk: 1
Lion: 1
More info to come!

Survey Results
General | Posted 9 years agoThe other day I linked to an adult furry anthology survey and here I'll go ahead and talk about the results.
The reason for this survey was to gauge customer interest in various themes/kinks. For some of these, I am planning for a small, 4-story anthology, for others I am interested in a standard 10+ story anthology.
Total responses were 45. I posted the link on SoFurry, FA, Twitter, passed it to a few people personally, and had FurPlanet tweet a link. Twitter pulled in the most responses, and oddest of all, FurPlanet tweeting it only garnered 8 extra responses, which I found odd. Two participants did not answer question 2, and I get the impression that may be due to not liking any of the above.
Responses to the first question: "I would buy an anthology focusing on the following":
Transformation 22
Cuckolding/Cheating 6
Hypnosis/MindControl 15
Exotic Species 22
Muscles/Muscle Growth 3
Predator/Prey 24
Macros 1
For the second question, I didn't allow responders to select multiple options. "The one I want to buy the most" is:
Transformation 7
Cuckolding/Cheating 5
Hypnosis/MindControl 8
Exotic Species 12
Muscles/Muscle Growth 1
Predator/Prey 10
Macros 0
Exotic species and Predator/prey being at the top didn't surprise me because they were the most broad, least-fetishized option. What does surprise me is the interest in Transformation--not just how many would like it, but at the same time, how few who were interested in it considered it their top interest. I expected cuckolding to be larger than hypnosis, and macro/muscles to get more responses than it did.
While more responses would've been nice, I'm satisfied with the results.

Furry Erotica Reader survey
General | Posted 9 years agoHello! Not dead! See? Posting.
Anyways, I'm making this journal because I'm putting out a very brief customer survey for those who buy adult furry anthologies, specifically the types of themes/kink focuses you'd like to see.
Please click and fill this out, it'd help!

First nonfurry story, PUBLISHED!
General | Posted 9 years agoIt's out! WOO.
Along with writing furry stuff, I also want to write outside the fandom. I like horror and fantasy a lot, and my first non-furry story is now in print. "The Monster Next Door" appears in Creepy Campfire Quarterly #2. That's the print version, here's the e-version.
Warning: It's horror. The subject matter is unpleasant.

What's on your writing to-do list, Rechan?
General | Posted 10 years agoI wanted to give you an idea of what weighing down my plate. This is a list of projects I'd like to/hope to do, of which I am not really accomplishing much with any of them.
1) Intimate Little Secrets, the collection I've been working on forever. This has the most priority.
2) Story for Voice's sci fi horror anthology. Since it's due March 1st, another high priority.
3) Superhero novella involving mental bondage and freaky stuff.
4) Online content. Be this patreon or what, but a couple of short silly smutty stories, and maybe two series.
5) Furry novel (1/3rd finished?)
6) Mainstream fantasy trilogy (with anthros sneaked in).
7) A non-furry horror novel. (No idea yet)
8) A collection of linked stories about a character (Dagger, from "Welcome to my Parlor" and "Into the Wind").
9) Misc short stories for publications. I could edit one and send it in to Gods with Fur, or to non-furry publications.
10) Another anthology, although the actual open call/editing/bla is outside my hands right now; I have to wait on others. A very backburner project.
So, these are the projects weighing me down. Outside of #1, and a few thousand words scattered among #4, I haven't really committed to any of these. There has been no writing for the last few weeks, due to Con+Life+Sick, but I'm going to try and get back on it and finish this story for Intimate Little Secrets if it kills me. After that, I don't know. My attention span is terrible, as you can see.

Will of the Alpha 2 is coming
General | Posted 10 years agoThe all male volume of the BDSM anthology is coming out at the end of the month; pre-order link coming soon. Here's the back cover blurb:
Some desires can't be met by normal means. Some itches you need scratched by a ram in leather or while holding a buck's leash. The men of Will of the Alpha share alternative passions.
Tomasz must find the right picture to appease his sensuous tormenter. A restless falcon needs a week's vacation at the farm where he can live as a horse, tack and all. Kai has to learn how to dominate. When his ex discovers a deep secret, Kody is forced to confess before it's too late.
Eleven authors bring you stories tied tight with tension, heat and heart. Sit back, turn the pages and hear the leather creak.
With stories by Whyte Yote, Tarl "Voice" Hoch, Tym Greene, George Squares, Lafitte, H. A. Kirsch, Friday Donnelly, Kjorteo Kalante, Ross Whitlock, Slip-Wolf, Talon Rihai and Salome Wilde.

Summerhill sequel! KM Hirosaki has a Patreon! OMG! :O
General | Posted 10 years agoThis is a signal boost for KM Hirosaki's patreon, where he'll be writing the sequel to Summerhill. He already has a bonus story up. I think it's about the hallucinogenic otters.
Another furry BDSM anthology calling for stories
General | Posted 10 years agoANOTHER one? And one I'm not affiliated with, either.
Weasel Press's adult label opens Knotted.
There, in case you happened to miss Will of the Alpha's deadline. And with a deadline of December, that gives you a wide open window to get your kink on.

Crunchy Numbers Survey Results, part of a balanced breakfast
General | Posted 10 years agoRecently I posted a survey and after analyzing the data, I wanted to report some findings! Without access to a stats program, all I can give are vote totals and percentages, but this is good enough. 28 people took the survey. A few extra people merely answered the first question before bailing, but those don't count because I deleted them. (If you didn't vote on the survey, your feedback is welcome, I just won't update this post here)
While few respondents clicked the link I posted to Sofurry, 50% would prefer to read stories on SF, compared to the 30% who would read on FA. I also had two votes for Weasyl and a few "get your own site". On to the good stuff.
Kinks
The kinks I asked about are related to stories I'm likely to write in the future, and I was curious which would be more popular/which I should get to sooner. Note that the kinks I asked about aren't the big ones for me - clothing, dirty talk, semen play, assertive females - those are almost always present, that's just what you get when you read my stuff.
The most popular was BDSM (8 Very Hot, 8 Hot, and 5 Sorta), which barely squeaked past Public Sex (5 VH, 9 H, 8 Sorta), and Gay (4 VH, 10 H, 5 S). Cheating came in right behind those, as did Incest (which surprised me).
The least popular items, voted "Not Interested", were Shemales (13 votes, or 52%), Humiliation (12 - 48%), and Cheating (8 - 32%). And "this is wrong, I'm judging" you option got a few hits: Humiliation (1), Incest (2), Teenagers (2), and Shemales (2). I can only assume the last one received any marks because the word shemale is offensive?
Serial Interest
I also pitched a number of ideas for multiple-chapter stories, to see which would interest readers more.
When it came to "I want to read this right now", the Mothers Confessing Incest stories got a whopping 7 votes (28%). Both "Sounds Interesting" and "Nope, pass" received 9 votes apiece, and 0 "It'd have to wow me". Pretty divisive.
When we look at what received the most "Sounds Interesting" votes, it went to the comedy about the porn troupe (14 votes, or 56%), a 13-vote (54%) tie between the Controversial Pornstar tale and a second chapter of Extra Corricular Activies, and finally the sexual Office Space setup (12 - 50%). That last one I shouldn't have used Office Space, the original concept was more like a sexy soap opera set in an office.
Paying the Author
In terms of sending cash my way, 48% are down with an ebook, 44% are cool with a patreon, and 38% accept a donate button. Good news, the donate button is up now, and I will be putting out an ebook (and print) collection probably in January. A patreon likely will happen, it's a matter of when. Finally 3 people said they would commission me. Whoever said that, send me a note. I'm curious!
It's exciting seeing these responses and where my readers are. I'm also reassured I'm on the right track, the stories in the pipeline will mostly garner interest. I still plan to write most of these, but now have a good idea where to focus and when. However things may not work out exactly like this - some kinks with negative votes are tied to some series with lots of interest, so that may not shake out very well.
By the way, for those interested in BDSM, good news. Two BDSM anthologies are coming later this year. Stay tuned for more information, as well as two bonus BDSM stories I'll be writing to coincide with the releases.

News, Changes, and Upcoming Works
General | Posted 10 years agoMy typical MO with posting writing info online has been "keep quiet until it's available" because I don't want to inundate folks with promotion, hype, and "It's coming, it's coming!" over and over. When your output is slow though, the result is I end up going months without a peep on here, and when I do the response is pretty minimal so why do it?
Going forward, that will likely change. Seeing other authors being more vocal in their spaces and it not hurt them has shown me that I should be engaging more. I want to give updates on what I'm workign on, what's coming, and changes.
Changes and News.
First, I posted a survey the other day and if you haven't filled it out, I'd appreciate it. Second, now I accept tips/donations. this money will go towards story-related art commissions and investing in publishing anthologies.
Expect me to start posting more stories online in a few months. Each of the books I intend to release will get a free online story for promotion, hopefully along with commissioned art. As well I am going to start focusing more on online writing to help build up my reader base and to get some silly, good ol' fashioned smut out of my system. This won't happen until I've finished a number of stories, so that I can release them at regular intervals.
This very possibly will result in a Patreon, but that won't be happening for a while yet. The idea is still being explored, but the survey responses have been positive to the idea. Rest assured no content will be exclusive. More details to come.
Upcoming Published works
Books: Will of the Alpha 2 is coming in late September, this one containing only M/M stories. It's followed closely by the early December release of Will of the Alpha 3, which is all orientations involving ladies. Dungeon Grind is a book long in production I've served on as assistant editor, and it's also likely being released in September. Finally, I am hoping to release Intimate Little Secrets, a collection of my short stories sometime in January or February.
Short stories: Heat #12 and Roar #6 will release in June, both having stories of mine in them. I'm incredibly pleased about returning to Heat. Rainfurrest's adult charity anthology will also have a story of mine, available in September. Fur To Skin: Straight Up, an anthology of human/furry erotica, accepted one of mys tories, but I don't have the release date yet.
And that's it! I'll keep you in the loop as far as things are progressing. My next journal will likely be analyzing the survey results.

When Your Stuff Isn't Good Enough for Some
General | Posted 10 years agoThe other day I got my teeth knocked in.
Earlier this week I started a thread over on the FWG forums about about improving the standards of editing in the fandom. The conversation was constructive, so I said to myself, "I will ask this same question in a non-fandom place, somewhere with professional editors who may suggest some resources or other methods to improve." So I posted a similar thread, explaining the situation in the fandom.
The two responses were pretty much "lol noob, get a job". Well, it was harsher than that.
I explained that the fandom's publishers are very small, so small they can't afford to hire editors. They do all the work and thus farm out editing for anthologies to anyone who stepped up. The response to this was: "Then they are doing a shoddy, unprofessional job, they're too cheap to pay editors to do it, and they shouldn't be doing it at all." I said that I felt weak in some areas of editing and was looking to improve. The responses were "It's clear because this post is full of errors" and "If you do not feel confident in your abilities, then you shouldn't be doing it at all." I asked what ways was there to become a better editor, there aren't many panels or workshops, and the response was "You can't learn it from a panel or workshop. The only way is to work under a better editor."
This made me a little sad. That is to say, I asked the mods to delete the thread because I was so destraught I didn't want anyone else to see it ever again, and wasn't sure I could keep from lashing out. For a while I doubted anything I could do. How could I keep on editing when I was so bad? How could I put something out that wasn't good? How could I be proud of it when the whole system wasn't professional? When I wasn't a professional?
After talking to some other people and mulling it over, I came to a realization.
Those guys can go fuck themselves.
Now, that's not being said out of defensiveness. Sure, my feelings are hurt, but it more comes from the overall message:
1) If a created work is not perfectly presented, it should not be sold and the seller is not a professional.
2) If you are not perfect in your ability, you should stop.
3) The only avenue of becoming better is direct mentorship.
Every point there is utterly false. It's both defeatist and incredibly insular. Allow me to pick this apart one at a time.
1) According to Sturgeon's Law, 90% of everything is crap. Does that mean that 90% of those that put that crap out there are unprofessional? Not only that, but that crap shouldn't exist in the first place? I know that sounds odd, me saying shitty things should exist, but some things end up being bad and need time to be bad. Take TV shows for instance, the first half-season of any show is the writers and directors and actors getting a feel for it, it wanders and has sevearl misses before it picks up. A writer's first published novel is often not that good.
That doesn't mean it shouldn't exist. Those people that made it still put the effort into it, they still made something, and thus making it they deserve to be acknowledged as professional. Technically, if someone is willing to pay you for it, then you're a professional. Anyone can slap anything into an ebook, put it online, and call themselves a writer - and bad or good, they can.
This isn't to say people should accept shoddy work and pass it off as professionalism, which I don't think the fandom publishers do. The amount of effort that goes into these endeavors is great, and to dismiss it on account of there being mistakes, or that the individuals behind them don't have degrees and years of experience, is bullshit (and the guys running those publishers have the experience of doing it for a long while). The kid hired by the auto shop is a mechanic, regardless of how good he is. His mistakes are his, and can be rightly pointed out, but you can't say he's not a mechanic.
2) I want you to imagine someone saying that to a writer or an artist. "Hey you aren't confident in your abilities, so you should stop." "You're not great at what you're doing, you shouldn't be doing it."
Acknowledging you know where your weaknesses are isn't admitting defeat (nor a dodge to absolve you of your mistakes but that's not the point). Knowing your weaknesses, hey, tells you where you need to improve. It also tells you where mistakes likely are going to be, so you can get help.
3) When you get down to it, editing is two things: understanding grammar, and understanding storytelling. Both of these you can learn from books and workshops and so on. Maybe when they say a "more experienced editor" they mean "someone to check your work" - yes, seeing what you missed is important. But editing, and any creative work, is not a mystery that requires an apprenticeship. If a writer can teach themselves to write without a mentor, can build themselves up with books, panels, and beta readers and practice, then so can an editor, and so can other creatives.
It strikes me that they are trying to protect the traditional way of things. Editors are Hired by other editors (or more accurately, publishers who may not be editors). The idea anyone can start an anthology and call themselves an editor is an affront on the work that these folks have put into being professional editors. A threat. I can start my own anthology and share royalties and call myself an editor, what does that say about them? Stop this kid before he makes us look bad, he's ruining it for us.
To bring home all three points: if their advice were to be taken seriously, then indie comics would never have happened. Or indie game development. Or really anyone saying "I do not have a job doing this, but I am going to make this thing, and put it out there because someone may want to buy it". Those sorts of mom-and-pop creative works where there wasn't enough money to color it, or have good paper, or any number of things that would qualify it as not professional-looking. There's not enough money in the fandom to be a big machine with lots of employees. We get paid what we can, and volunteers help out with the rest.
And you know what? I think I'll accept a few books with mistakes over there being no books. That's where this would go, if their advice were made real: no publishers, no books, unless they were done By Professionals. Nah, I'd rather just get better at what I'm doing now, thanks.
One friend told me I should take them to task for being so full of bullshit. Honestly I was too cowardly to do that. Anything I said that was disagreeing would have come off as shrill and defensive - who was I, the noob telling them their business. Also it would have been emotional and vicious because let's face it, feelings are hurt. I could email one of the individuals (because they are a moderator) and give them the content of this post, but I'm not ready for that (and I don't want to establish a dialogue, I don't want their reply, I just want to stuff mine down their throat). Maybe I never will.
This post is in part for me, but also for you. I'm posting it to tell you that some people may kick your teeth in. Don't let anyone tell you it shouldn't exist. Don't let anyone tell you to stop. And if they do? Fuck them.
You're allowed to not be perfect. You're allowed to put that not-perfect stuff out there. You're even allowed to sell your not-perfect stuff. Stand beside it and say, "I did my best." Accept it when people point out the imperfections and learn from it, so that the next thing you do will be your new best, better than your old best, because you've learned and improved.
The only thing you can do is the best that you can do. If everything you do is your best, then be proud of it, and don't let anyone take that away from you. Including yourself.

My FWA panel schedule! Also a little news
General | Posted 10 years agoNot dead! In fact, I'll be attending Furry Weekend Atlanta next month. Here's the schedule of FWA panels I will be sitting on. I'll also definitely go to the World Culture and History in Furry Writing panel NightEyes Dayspring is running.
These times are subject to change, because con scheduling is like that.
currently I'm busy editing WotA 2 and 3, as well as writing stories for various anthologies (RF's adult charity anthology, Roar, etc). WotA2 is currently slated for release at AC, and Wota3 at RF.
Just a heads up to folks that follow me - I will be writing a bonus promotional story for WotA 3. I also plan to write a promotional story for Intimate Little Secrets, but I can't rightly work on that project until WotA 3 is mostly done. Both bonus stories (hopefully) will have commissioned art to go along with them!

The Philosophical Defense Mechanism
General | Posted 11 years agoThe leopard crouches to pounce the gazelle.
The gazelle says, “Are you sure you want to eat me?”
Leopard pauses. “Uh, why wouldn’t i?”
"Well, I mean, is this what you want to be doing with your life? Do you see yourself doing this in five years?"
"What do you mean? if I eat you now, you won’t be here in five years." says the leopard.
The gazelle shrugs. “Don’t you have goals? Aspirations? ‘Eating Gazelle’ is setting the bar pretty minimally. Don’t you want cubs?”
"I… gee. Maybe write a screenplay…" The leopard sits down and sighs. "Look, I’m between opportunities right now, I’m in my mom’s den. What can I offer a mate?"
"No, I understand, What went wrong?"
"Well I-"
The gazelle runs away.

Opinion on story commissions?
General | Posted 11 years agoPondering opening up for commissions, but don't know if my followers would want them. Anyone out there?
Seeking feedback for book
General | Posted 11 years agoI'm working on a collection of my own short stories. I want to price it at $10, making the standard word count maximum around 50-60K. Currently running the logistics of this, I'm trying to settle on length, number of content, etc, and need some feedback.
For you, as a reader/customer, based on the price of $10 (or a $5 ebook):
1. What's an acceptable word count to you? (To give a frame of reference, Handcuffs & Lace is 36K words.)
2. How many stories do you feel is acceptable?
3. What is a reasonable ratio of new stories to old (previously printed/posted) stories?

What I'm Working On
General | Posted 12 years agoNot Dead! See?
I'm still writing. Sorta. Right now I'm finishing a story I'm planning to submit beyond the fandom - my first one.
Aside from that, I'm editing Dungeon Grind. I nearly have a story finished for Trick or Treat 2 and I need to work on one for RF's anthology. Oh, and on the back burner is a Seeeecret Proooojeeeect that I add a little to now and then.

Book drive - have old books to donate?
General | Posted 12 years agoI am going to put care packages together for soldiers in Afghanistan. If you have any old books (preferably fiction, mass market paperback sized) I'd be happy to take them.
I'll also accept cash donations, to either buy books or cover shipping costs.
If interested, please note me and I can provide mailing address or Paypal.
