DAZ screw-up - or feature?
General | Posted 4 years agoIt seems today (at least for me!) buying a bundle that you already own some of the bits can be at great savings.
In my case some of the 'pro' packs that I own parts of are coming up FREE!
Good luck as YMMV ...
Update, they seem to be 'returning' all the 'free' content (Good thing I DLed the important stuff at four in the morning ...
Update of the update, for even more fun, things already 'owned' from a different bundle are now un-owned as well, guess I'll be filing a few trouble tickets ...

DAZ may be heading for troubled waters ...
General | Posted 4 years agoDAZ is either hurting for cash or they have some 'new blood' trying to prove that they know ways to bring in more money.
First and most costly for those that fall for it are the NFTs. "A 'Non-fungible Token' that points to a unique piece of digital content, and when you buy one, the NFT acts as a certificate of authenticity for that content."
Yes and no as you can make a dozen unique NFTs all pointing at the same piece of digital content. An even better joke is those NFTs don't have to be for anything you own. The best joke is they are a certificate of authenticity for a link to something - not the something itself!
You may ask why I see this as a warning sign. It's the fact that they're pushing these NFTs at the DAZ artists - and what it'll cost those artists if they fall for them.
First and foremost, these NFTs run only on cyber-coins, which you must either mint yourself or buy. When this started a couple weeks ago it was a bit more than $150 to buy the NFT, but that's not the end of it; as when you sell the NFT there's a transfer fee (which was over $100 when this started - it goes up/down with the cyber-coin value).
So, how many of your followers do you think will spend real money for merely a link to your work? A link which could change or die leaving them with a NFT pointing nowhere? And the author/artist has to pony up the NFT cost and hope/pray that it'll sell for more than the NFT+fee costs them or they're out some money.
The second worrying bit is DAZ coming up with a 'season pass' (that only lasts two months for a very short season indeed) and the offerings to date proving that those that didn't get it are the true winners.
Third is that any comments on their forums that DAZ is going/has gone too PC/woke are quickly deleted.
I still have a few store credits to burn there, but so far they seem to be telling me to save it for later ...

Names, names, needs me some more names …
General | Posted 4 years agoWhile we know there’s a FTL comm service in the CU, we don’t know its name (or I managed to totally miss it!)
So I’ll open the silly thing up to suggestions as I sometimes lack imagination on such things.
Best I’d come up with was:
FTL One – Your best (and only) way to get a message to cross the stars!
(short of putting a note in a bottle and having it shipped to its final destination …)
((yes, I found a FF one I liked for the new one going in – any guesses?))
Okay, current thoughts on a chapter:
It’s Always the Finer Details That Get You in the End
“The word is out,” the female cheetah morph stated at Neal’s question. “In ensuring that they couldn’t block their FTL services you gave away our network.”
“Do we know just what exactly happened?” Neal asked with a frown.
“We know they started at one endpoint to reload and regain control of their network relays. And it was working just fine as the ones you reprogrammed were willing to talk to either network. Then they took down a hub connecting several legs …”
“And ours stepped in,” Neal guessed.
“And confused the hell out of them,” she agreed. “Just the leg they’d ‘fixed’ stayed down – all the others quickly reconnected without their hub. Then when they got their hub back online only the reprogrammed leg wanted to talk to it; the other legs seeing it as a much more restricted connection than the one they were already attached to.”
“Were they able to reestablish their connections?”
“Only after we deliberately degraded our links,” she admitted. “They’ve officially whined to the Federation council, who didn’t know anything about it, but is now looking into matters. I understand that when they tried whining to Star Fleet; it was pointed out just how dismal their system has been the past few decades, and that Star Fleet was finding the new network much more useful than the old one.”
“Damn,” Neal muttered. “It was bound to happen sooner or later, I was just hoping for later.”
She snorted lightly before saying, “Concerned parties talked it over and opened the network fully. No advertising as yet, but it’s there to be found – though some of the connections will warn of the limited bandwidth they currently have to work with.”
“And I wasn’t a concerned party?” Neal wondered.
“I understand you were busy cutting off a few Rakshan tails and feeding them to their owners,” she pointed out. “Not that the word wasn’t already spreading after you gave Star Fleet the codes to use our network.”
“Thoughts?”
“We’ll try and speed up the deployments where we can. This won’t be the ‘Tada!’ opening we had originally planned on, but it might actually be more interesting to watch the cascades of discovery as people trip over it and then tell their friends. Speaking of tripping over it, an acquaintance of mine that’s not involved in any of our projects inadvertently sent me the perfect advertisement – when we get to that stage.”
The scene was someone’s large room, and it cut in and out several times as a small raccoon morph played with recording controls, and an adult could be seen with their back to the camera chopping something in the kitchen area.
“Mom, can I call Grandma?” the child half begged her mother.
“I’m sorry baby, but you know we can’t reach her from here.”
“Can I try?”
“Sure, baby. Select Comm on the console and hit the Go button. There’s a local connection and there would be an FTL option.” Barely heard by the system was the mutterings of, “As if Quad-da-crap would ever extend their network out this far.”
“FTL option says Frontier Fantasy FTL!” the child told her.
“Yeah, that’d be a good name for our link if we could get one out here,” the adult was heard to chuckle without turning around. “Then you’d have to find and select the station Grandma’s on and key in her code.”
There was a minute of silently watching the comical faces made by the young when absorbed in a difficult task.
“It’s calling!” the child finally exclaimed.
“Sure it is, baby.”
An insert opened, showing a very confused looking older raccoon.
“Hi, Grandma!” the child cheerfully yelled out just as her mother started to move the pot of whatever she’d been chopping.
“Sunspot? – How? …” and the mother was now spinning around in astonishment on hearing the new voice – the pot hitting the floor with a muted clunk.
“Missed you, Grandma,” the child was saying as the two older raccoons simply stared back at each other in shock.
Neal smiled as the scene faded. “Yeah, the old ‘but we know that that’s impossible’ look.”
“Which you seem to like to generate at every chance,” the cheetah morph growled through a grin.
“Alright, we’ll see how it goes,” Neal agreed. “Bet on it picking up faster on those planets that we had a hand in helping set up their local comm network.”
So I’ll open the silly thing up to suggestions as I sometimes lack imagination on such things.

As with a lot of software, there's always that risk of losing everything if the company suddenly goes out of business, so I have a bad/good tendency of making/downloading backups whenever possible ...
So while they won't be seen on the system that accesses the internet, I'll play with offline system and see if any of them are actually worth the prices they normally want for them.

Starting the new year off right.
General | Posted 5 years agoToo much noise to sleep - fireworks must be fired off to bring in the new year you know - so I checked to see what DAZ might have up as a new year's day sale - only to discover that whatever poor fool had been left the task to update their web pages had dropped a stitch.
They'd been having pro bundles off all week long, so one dropping from 70 to 90% off was nice of them; but they also had a page of creatures on sale, so I clicked on a few to see just how much of a discount they'd give me and then checked my shopping cart - only to find they weren't charging anything? Hmm, okay ...
Went back to see what else might be of interest - but that page was no longer there - seems someone woke up. Checked and it seems they honored the order, so you might be seeing a few new critters showing off on my pages!

So if you don't want to buy a bigger system (like I just did! ) you can pay by the hour.

Hi! I noticed that you have some awesome work here on FA and I think there's a huge opportunity for your pages to get much bigger. My IRL job (when I'm not being a big dumb furry) is helping people like yourself with social media and web stuff, so I thought I'd offer to help you out with a free analysis for your pages that could help you grow. If you want to give it a try, check out the link here: [removed to protect others!]
Like I'm not going to check on things before just clicking a link?
The page you are trying to reach has been deactivated by the owner.
Must have gotten too many 'go away spambot!' notes.
It does make me wonder if anyone actually clicks their bait ...
Extra funny is an already removed new watcher and a removed fav, maybe the same nutcase, but no way to tell ...

General | Posted 5 years agoOr so everything says these days in this throw-it-away-and-get-another-one-when-it-dies world we now live in.
And with all the on-a-chip computers/controllers, in some cases they're semi-right - but it does sometimes depend on the user.
In this case it was my ageing LG Flatron (E2351), that after many years of good service would now only give me a blank white screen (not even the on-screen control info.) So with a bit of rewiring and an A/B switch I had everything sharing the remaining monitor.
I'm saving up for a system upgrade (to help me make bad 3D art even faster!), so while I looked at all the pretty (and pricey) 4K monitors, I really didn't want to spend that kind of money right now, so after a week of staring at the wrong screen I picked up a screwdriver and got dangerous ...
The screws weren't the hardest part, that was wedging things into the edges/sides to pop the front cover from the back.
Inside there wasn't much I'd dare to play with - least I finish breaking the dang thing, but there were several connections I could reseat/wiggle in case it was just a bad connection.
Applied power with the panel balanced on my lap, and I now had the 'check your connections' warning I'd been hoping for. Reattached computers and I seem to be back in business - maybe it's got a few more years let in it after all.
Now if only nailing down my muse and getting my story moving was as 'easy' ...
(And I now notice extra bit still on my desk, just a cover that you can't see from the front - and will most likely be lost before I feel the need to see the back of the monitor ... )

FA issues/ads and a little rant ...
General | Posted 5 years agoWas trying to post a jpeg and couldn't get past picking the file and hiting 'next (520 file server kicked back an unknown error?)
As this was in a firefox I haven't updated in a while I tried chrome.
... And I was reminded just why I always use an ad blocker on firefox!
An ad or two is one thing if they just sit quietly off to the side; but I'm sorry, the only reason for six or more - some of them moving/waving/constantly changing - ads is because you don't want me on that page ...
Sadly for those quiet little ads the only way to kill/block the moving ones kills/blocks them as well. (And while I now have to unblock them to sign in - the very next click is to put them back in the bad ads box.)
End of rant, I'll try again later to see if I can post the jpeg (someone had thought the bunny ears too big so I ran the dials full up/down to see what we have to play with. )
Edit: it seems some are able to post jpegs at this time, still nothing here (I do hope this isn't their latest try at getting people to put up with their new format ...)
Edit II: went into the new format and was able to load it - but same error when trying to update it to full size ... (and was reminded why I didn't like the new format ...)
Edit III: and finally got it to take the bigger picture, from the old format, so just FA having a day ...

Grimes Premier Bundle at DAZ
General | Posted 5 years agoOkay, DAZ is still giving out toys and one of them seems to be something for making your own music video - no, I don't know yet just how much fun/work it might be.
https://www.daz3d.com/grimes-premier-bundle (check to see what you might already have/need - the extra pieces might be cheaper than the bundle.)
From what I can gather, they're giving you some parts for free (and you buy the others if you want to do it with them).
https://www.daz3d.com/grimes-free-bundle
If you do a youtube search for:
“You'll Miss Me When I'm Not Around.”
you'll find a mess of videos like this one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6SsCjY498k
It seems they give you the animation for the girl/hair/chothes/sword action and you fill in the background as you like.
Something to play with - or at least a few more free toys for later.
Oh, and the DAZ 'everyone's a PC member' dies Friday!)

Demented thoughts from a demented mind
General | Posted 6 years agoAs most of those reading my silly tales already know, I can’t draw to save my life, therefore I dabble with DAZ Studio https://www.daz3d.com/home
On to my strange thoughts and questions. DAZ has several cat-like critters and I was curious which people think look the best/least bad and which could make good Rakshani, Caitians, and the cat morphs from Earth.
Most of what I’ve been playing with to date is using Cleo
https://www.daz3d.com/cleo-the-chee.....nesis-8-female
The main reason being most outfits with fit her with little to no extra work.
The cat-girl pack
https://www.daz3d.com/catgirl-megap.....sis-8-female-s
Had several sets of stripes for my Rakshani – and a tail Cleo was missing. (As they don’t have a male-cat kit, so some body changes and the gray skin gives me a male for Alex.)
https://www.daz3d.com/foxy-lady-wit.....nesis-8-female
Gave me a foxy skin for Cindy, though me morphing up a good fox head/face in still in the works.
A couple I don’t have but am looking at are:
https://www.daz3d.com/cat-world-for.....sis-8-female-s
https://www.daz3d.com/cat-world-for.....nesis-8-male-s
And a couple new ones that I like the looks of but will have to wait for a sale:
https://www.daz3d.com/osodreamers-f.....inefolk-bundle
Some of you may have noticed a lack of mention of taurs – or chakats. I don’t really expect anyone to ‘make’ those at this point, so I’ll most likely have to kit-bash my own out of other models. I do have the DAZ dog
https://www.daz3d.com/daz-dog-8
and a few mods for it
https://www.daz3d.com/big-cat-dog-for-daz-dog-8
https://www.daz3d.com/grey-wolf-for-daz-dog-8
I’ve also got the older big cat

but it’s a lot more limited on its controls/mods.

And a couple new ones that I like the looks of but will have to wait for a sale:

Some of you may have noticed a lack of mention of taurs – or chakats. I don’t really expect anyone to ‘make’ those at this point, so I’ll most likely have to kit-bash my own out of other models. I do have the DAZ dog
https://www.daz3d.com/daz-dog-8
and a few mods for it
https://www.daz3d.com/big-cat-dog-for-daz-dog-8
https://www.daz3d.com/grey-wolf-for-daz-dog-8
I’ve also got the older big cat

but it’s a lot more limited on its controls/mods.

Still kicking ...
General | Posted 6 years agoSorry about no book 4 update in a month, the muse has been most uninformative of how to make the next bits fit.
So, as the muse hides I've been trying to clean up and reorganize my excuse for a mess - at least a little bit. Sadly I'm not making much progress as I gt distracted by all the neat stuff I'm finding that I'd forgotten.
Found an old FreeAgent drive (no power supply with it so pulled the drive just to see what secrets it might hold) with Dec '06 Folly files and DAZ Studio 1.0.0.0 (file date was 9/23/2005 and was only 11.3 meg!) that will actually load/run under Windows 7. (not that you can do a great deal with it, but it's interesting to see how it's grown over the years.)
Oh well, back to my de-organizing ...

Those of you playing in DAZ may want to grab that free tail!
General | Posted 6 years agoCurrently part of their Christmas giveaway.
(Might get used my next art piece ...)
EDIT:
Be advised (WARNED) that while the tail is less than a meg to download, the way it uses dforce to make the tail is a real memory hog. DAZ 4.12 with one Genesis 8 Cleo and one tail loaded, tail set to high density (thick fur) had my system chewing on 22.4GBs of ram making an iray image (4.63 loaded and idle).

And Yehaa Groups bytes the dust.
General | Posted 6 years agoStarted seeing this little message last week:
Attention: Starting December 14, 2019 Yahoo Groups will no longer host user created content on its sites. New content can no longer be uploaded after October 28, 2019. Sending/Receiving email functionality is not going away, you can continue to communicate via any email client with your group members.
Which makes it entirely worthless as a forum tool.
I've just set up a Google Groups bin for “Foster’s Folly” as a test (as we have only another week before yehaa pulls the plug on adding files/comments.)
My options were:
Email list: Members communicate with each other using a single email address.
Web forum: Members use Google Groups to communicate with each other.
Q&A forum: Members ask and answer each other's questions.
Collaborative inbox: Members assign topics to each other and track topics as tasks.
So I made it a web forum. (Didn’t see options for drive/storage/file space.)
This is not to replace Goldie's groups, just as a test and if need be way-point to keeping the old groups together.
Editing to add that at least for now yehaa groups isn't letting me tell yehaa chakat group that I've made a google one - are they crashing a week early?

Don't try following me on facebook
General | Posted 6 years agoFacebonk is now dead to me.
I haven't signed on to it since I made a note that my book two was out, so they got upset and locked the account. So I played the 'forgot my password' game which required my to prove that the email address they have for me is still good.
Still locked though for unknown reasons on their part. But there is a solution offered! Only one though. I need to point out three 'friends' and have them tell facebonk they 'know' me. Facebonk will then give each of them a code - which they then have to give me so I can prove to facebonk I am who I am ...
Too much work for an account that can't even get to those watching it unless I pay facebonk extra.
Rest in Pieces

General | Posted 7 years ago... half the time.
One of my brothers (or maybe it was his better half) found the perfect card, it read:
"Sometimes a card will make your whole day, if not your whole year.
As some of you have already guessed, the inside read:
This is not that card.
Another fool whom I shall not name decided to torture me with a DAZ gift card (what to get what to get???)
Still trying to clear/clean some things up on the current work, hopefully an update this weekend.
