Back to the Wilderness
General | Posted 7 years agoIt's 0230, I'm not packed yet, I have to do laundry, and I'm scheduled for a 1000 flight back to Windigo on Isle Royale and what am I doing? Writing a journal for you lovely people, of course!
I've spent the better half of my summer and the last few months working on a trail crew on Isle Royale, a National Park in the middle of Lake Superior. It's a pretty chill gig and I've seen a lot more of the beauty of the Isle than I have ever seen. Good folks, very VERY isolated and the Yoopinese is strong there, eh.
Been pretty busy with other things too. Getting my academic life back together since I found out Uncle Sam doesn't want no dumb pup for an employee. I've been studying hard to get my C's at MTU in their forestry program so I can keep fighting the good fight and achieve my ultimate goal of becoming a wildland firefighting for the USFS again. It's a long road and it keeps me up a night but I keep reminding myself it's worth it.
Have a very busy month ahead of me, we have an employee drinking fest called "Chrismoose" to celebrate, I'm planning on a circle tour of Lake Superior with my good friend
yooperfox when my time on Isle Royale comes to an end. Once I get back to the great state of Superior, it's off to Fall Camp with that silly fox and then, if the planets align, the stars are right, and the mood strikes noon, I'll find my way to MFF to see some of you lovely fuzzbutts.
Anyway, thought I'd let all yoos hosers what's up. Keep your stick on the ice and I'll catch alls yoos on the flip side, eh.

MotorCity Madness FurCon
General | Posted 7 years agoIt's that time of year again! Time to attend the con for drunks with a furry problem!
Where are you staying?
Hopefully in a room
What day are you getting there?
We'll be getting there when we arrive
Who will you be rooming with?
Buncha hosers
QueenHyena , a few trolls
PiSexual ,
yooperfox and
ShadyPixel
Who will you hang out with during the convention?
Hopefully with a bunch of folks that I haven't seen in a long while and a few old friends
amato and
flaskey
How can I find you?
I'm the long-haired non-pinko injun that will be walking around with a killer UP collar and boots with shorts combo.
Are there any panels you might be attending?
I'll be able to get back to you on the tuesday following the convention.
Are you attending any stage or public performances?
See above
Will you be suiting?
Negative Ghost Rider, the pattern is full
How old are you?
11009 days
How tall are you?
70"
Can I talk to you?
Sure, I'm a pretty easy-going pup. Just speak up when you talk to me, I cut trees down for a living so I don't hear as well as I used to.
Can I buy you drinks?
Fer shure, eh! Though I warn you I'm a forester in training and have done time in Uncle Sams Misguided Children, the Forest Service, and the Park Service. I've been known to rack up $70 bar tabs. Purchase at your own risk.
Can I give you stuff?
I LOVE GETTING NEW STUFF AND THINGS!!!!!
Can I hug or snuggle with you?
Fer shure, eh. I'm a pretty physical kind of guy that enjoys hugs, slaps on the shoulder and all that cool stuff.
What’s your goal for the con this year?
To continue to stay alive and live the dream
How long are you going?
About as long as we're staying!
If I see you, how should I get your attention?
Smoke signals, carrier pigeons, sending telegrams, slapping my shoulder and saying "sup ya hoser" or simply saying "hey you" tends to work rather well
How can I message you?
Smoke signals, carrier pigeons, sending telegrams, slapping my shoulder and saying "sup ya hoser" or simply saying "hey you" tends to work rather well. Check out my front page for contact info.
Are you going to any parties?
Should be able to attend the Yooper Meet-n-Greet but beyond that, stay tuned!
Can I take your picture?
Sure, just let me know and maybe show it to me so I know what sort of incriminating evidence exists of me on the interwebs.
Hope to catch all yoos guys at Novi. Keep your stick on the ice!

Bursday!
General | Posted 8 years agoToday marks an important achievement for me, for today, I have traveled around the sun 30 times! The whole city was so excited they hosted a party in my honor but they named it Winter Carnival. Going to get my free meal, watch a hockey game and kill a few brain cells to ring in the beginning of a new set of numbers. As always, keep your stick on the ice, I'm pulling for you.

General | Posted 8 years agoHoly wah! With only about two weeks until MFF, suppose one of these dar things is in order.
Where are you staying?
Chilling at the Aloft, as is becoming the routine.
What day are you getting there?
Should be getting there the day we arrive
How are you traveling?
The pack ice is closing in, cannot reach by air. Going to try by car. First,
yooperfox will bring me to Baraga where I'll be dropped off and picked up by a team headed by
blueliger and made up of the fastest furs available to bring me the rest of the way to Rosemont.
Who will you be rooming with?
Staying with a few local fuzzbutts,
yooperfox
queenhyena and some cat I guess,
pisexual
How is the best way to find you?
If you stop, lay flat on the floor and press your ear to the ground, you'll look ridiculous. Seek out sources of free food, boozes and hockey and you'll likely be able to pick up a trace.
Are there any panels you might be attending?
Might make my way down to a few panels, which ones though? Not even I'm sure!
What do you look like?
Look for a long-haired, injun-type, non-pinko Red
Will you be suiting?
Negative Ghostrider the pattern is full
Do you do free art?
There's no such thing as a free lunch
Do you do trades?
I'm injun, we barter
(if you get that reference, I'll give you a hug for free though)
How tall are you?
70"
Can I talk to you?
Sure, I'm generally an easy-going dude, just avoid me at hockey games
Can I touch you?
See Me, feel me, touch me, booze meeee...
Can I visit your room?
I don't mind chilling with folks
Can I buy you drinks?
Potentially, so long as there are no other obligations beyond chilling over a drink
Can I give you stuff?
Fucking a, man! I love stuff and things!
Can I hug or snuggle with you?
ERMEGERD!!! SNUGGLES AND HUGGS!!!
Are you nice?
I'm an easy-going person that has a particular set of skills. I will find you, and I will befriend you
Do you have an artist table?
Nope, hoping to see a few though.
Will you be going to parties?
Maybe, no set plans yet
Will you be performing?
Sweety, you can't afford to see these goods in action...nor would you want to be able to afford it.
If I see you, how should I get your attention?
Smoke signals, carrier pigeons, telegrams-I'm trying to learn Morse Code but I'm not sure if Western Union still delivers them, slapping my shoulder, throwing things at me, all good ways to get my attention.
Where will you be most of the time during the day/s?
Probably at the con, possibly seeking out food
What/where will you be eating?
Food/somewhere with food
Can I come with you for food/fun/etc?
Sure, table for one dining is lonely dining
Can I look in your sketchbook?
Alas, since the great move of 2016 it has been lost on purpose
Can I draw in your sketchbook?
See above
Can I take your picture?
Sure, just let me know and maybe show it to me so I know what sort of incriminating evidence exists of me on the interwebs.
What's your goal(s) for the con this year?
To stay alive and to continue to live the dream
Looking forward to another fun in the sun time at MFF. Excited to see all yoos guys I've met before and all the folks I'll meet at the con! Keep your stick on the ice!

Big Fitz
General | Posted 8 years agoOn November 10th, 1975, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, a 729 foot ore carrier, slipped beneath the chilling seas of Lake Superior. Straight from the docks of Michigan, she held the reputation of the star of her fleet, setting and then breaking even her own haul records. Nicknamed "The Big Fitz," "Pride of the American Side," and even the "Queen of Superior" the Edmund Fitzgerald and her dedicated 29 man crew sailed the Great Lakes delivering the ore to fuel the US' steel appetite.
On November 9th, she departed Superior, Wisconsin on her final voyage to a steel mill built on Zig Island near the coast of Detroit, Michigan. She would only make it to Whitefish Point, where she slipped beneath the waves caused by the Three Witches of November. Superior, she never gives up her dead and the Big Fitz's crew lay at rest the same as they worked and lived. Together.

General | Posted 8 years agoThe last time this day happened was back in 2006. It was also the day I walked across the parade deck at MCRD San Diego and graduated as a United States Marine. It continues to be one of the proudest moments in my life. I'm reminded of a particular seen in a particular movie that conveys my thoughts about my accomplishment.

South to Go North
General | Posted 9 years agoHey yoos guys!
So, another con has come and gone and as always, it passed by way too quickly. Met so many new folks and had an amazing time chilling with old friends and new colleagues. Anyhoo...
Started the con the usual way, catching the injun trails bus to meet up with my scaly friend
sorcererdale and made our way south to get north to Novi and to the con. Met up with some pretty chill roommates and met up with some old friends.
Started Friday and the con right, that is, finally registering for it. Sponsor for life yo! Or at least for the next three days. Watched a few shows, attended a few panels and drank a few beers. All good things.
Saturday and Sunday were such a blur, they almost seemed like they happened at the same time. I wish I could remember all the folks I met but alas, my memory and phone appeared to have run out of battery life.
amato and I chatted it up in true Yoopinese fashion, drawing quite a crowd. Well, like four folks but that's quite a crowd for us. Sunday I went out for burger and a beer with some fellow alumnus of the Superior State, that loafer and lower Michigan state and other friends. Later, my best friend and best ride
sorcererdale chilled and we met even more friends
warwelf and accents were galore.
Ride home was somber as always. I love attending conventions but hate leaving all the friends. Luckily,
sorcererdale and I were greeted by a ticker-tape parade when we finally crossed the bridge to get to Northern-Southern Michigan. Turned out it was snow. It was a great con and I enjoyed it immensely. Can't wait to chill with all yoos guys again.

General | Posted 9 years agoWow, it's been a busy weekend. Thought I'd update yoos guys to ensure you all I'm still very much alive for the time being. Finally settling back in only to embark on yet another adventure this upcoming weekend for MCFC! Spent the last week or so struggling to get all my ducks in a line for the wonderful world of gun shows. Trying to keep my foot in the door when I finally open up shop all by myself and walk down the valley of the shadow of military surplus and fear no deal.
Anyway, I ended up ordering over 300 lbs of surplus and sold quite a bit of it at the local gun show. The elusive .38 special Police Model continues to elude me, as does the coveted Tokarev TT-33. I ended up with ammo for both handguns, but no guns. Never buy ammunition in anticipation of owning the firearm that fires said ammo kiddies! Sold some kids some constipation in a bag (MREs), sold a lady some communism (Soviet Ushanka) and made a mini-human grin ear-to-ear when I sold her pink paracord at a discount! All good times!
...also, if anyone needs surplus and stuff I know a guy...

Superior They Say, Never Gives Up Her Dead
General | Posted 10 years agoForty years ago, tragedy struck the maritime community of the Great Lakes. The Edmund Fitzgerald, a 729 foot ore carrier, went down in one of the worst storms in recorded Great Lakes history. All twenty-nine men went down with the ship. No bodies have ever been recovered and the cause of the wreck is still fraught with controversy. Now let Gordon Lightfoot tell you the story of the "Big Fitz"

It came from the deep
General | Posted 10 years agoHoly wah, it's been a while since I've last made a journal. I'm still alive, I think, but I've just been having such a busy spring and summer. This week also marks the first time in about two months that I've had reliable internet. Huzzah! Anyway, thought I'd update all yoos guys on my doings and happenings.
Firstly, picked up a gig with the SCA VFC doing WFF. That's Student Conservation Association, Veterans' Fire Corps and Wildland Firefighting respectively. Pretty sweet gig. Training took place in scenic Colorado and I ended up in Nebraska for the summer working for the Forest Service. Managed to get my sawyer 3 rating as well so I can officially operate a chainsaw and can fell trees. Watch out nature, I'm here to conserve! It's been fun so far and I'll post some pics when I have the time.
Secondly, spent the last 16 or so days traveling through 5 different states, three of which I've never been to before, chasing after wildfire. Worked over 220 hours or so. I also have pictures of that as well.
Thirdly, boy do I have a lot of artwork that hasn't been posted. I might have to do something about that.
So, the summer has been pretty fun so far for me, save for missing out on AC. That was a bummer. Looking to tentatively attend RMFC in the beginning of August if we don't get called up again. At any rate, thanks for reading and stuff. Be seeing yoos guys.

Sweet Home, MFF
General | Posted 11 years agoAfter getting back home earlier on Tuesday I'm finally sort of settled in and slowly catching up with things. Where was I you might ask? Why, MFF of course. So...
Just sit right back and you'll here a tail,
a tail of a fateful trip,
it started in a snowy storm
aboard a charter bus.
The bus was a mighty injun one,
it traveled on the trails
Three passengers sat in that bus
For a three hour drive, a three hour drive
Delivered one in a town called Gwinn
A tiny pup got off
Picked up by a dragon friend of his
And headed to the con, and headed to the con
The Jeep drove down to the con hotel in a village called Rosemont
With Sorcererdale
sorcererdale
A husky too
A cuddly wolf
soulghostpaw and his wife
kidaraindance
A new good friend
princesswilly
A yooperfur
amato and some old colleagues
catamount
breadfox
Here at MFF con!
Sung to the tune of Gilligan's Island (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfSLuEj99d0)
Had an awesome time meeting with everyone and sorry if I didn't mention you in my song. I'd have to go about five or six more verses if I were to include everyone and everything that happened.

So, MFF. I seem to be heading that way once more.
General | Posted 11 years agoOnce more, it's that time of year again. Heading down south to Chicago for MFF and thought some folks might be interested in knowing what I'll be up to and such.
Where are you staying?
At the overflow hotel Aloft
What day are you getting there?
Will be arriving sometime Thursday
How are you traveling?
Via bus and then by
sorcererdale horseless carriage
Who will you be rooming with?

How is the best way to find you?
Stay in one spot, hug a tree and blow a whistle. I tend to wander around so if you do that I'll find you.

Yes, which ones I do not know. I shall let you know on the day following MFF.
What do you look like?
Long haired Injun type, wears boots with shorts

How tall are you?
70"
Can I talk to you?
Indeed you may
Can I touch you?
Sure, just don't be surprised if I jump or twitch
Can I visit your room?
Sure, I may even waive admission fees.

Can I hug or snuggle with you?
Yes, yes you may
Are you nice?
I like to think I have an agreeable personality

If I see you, how should I get your attention?
Smoke signals, carrier pigeons or simply saying "hey you" tends to work rather well
Where will you be most of the time during the day/s?
A valid question, likely hanging with friends and/or making more of them
What/where will you be eating?
Food/somewhere
Can I come with you for food/fun/etc?
Sure, I enjoy not eating by myself

Unless you wish to see crudely drawn pictures of various organisms studied during my biology labs, likely not

Sure, if I remember to bring it which I'll likely not.
Can I take your picture?
Sure, just let me know and maybe show it to me so I know what sort of incriminating evidence exists of me on the interwebs.
What's your goal(s) for the con this year?
To stay alive and to continue to live the dream
And that concludes my period of instruction. Any questions?

Gordon Lightfoot, stahp...
General | Posted 11 years agoAs some of you may know, today is more than the Marine Corps' Birthday. It's a day those of us along Superior know as the date the Edmund Fitzgerald, the pride of the Great Lakes fleet, was swallowed up by Superior. No bodies were recovered and the cause of the sudden loss of one of the most technologically advanced boats is still a mystery. The boat and her crew were immortalized by Gordon Lightfoot's 'Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald."

Doing what I can for a good friend
General | Posted 11 years agoDon't normally, well actually I've never done this before, post other folks' journals but he is a good friend and colleague and is in dire need of assistance. It would also be extremely helpful if anyone would be able to pass the word along.

"Because you told me to, drill sergeant"
General | Posted 11 years agoSo, this has been going around a bit. Not plague-like but nevertheless like scurvy in college students.
xaviera insisted I try this myself so I'll see how she goes. Hookay, sooo. Yoos guys know the drill.
Comment here and I will:
1) Tell you something I learned about you by looking at your FA page for 10 seconds.
2) Tell you a color you remind me of.
3) Tell you my first memory of you.
4) Ask you a question.
5) Tell you something I like about you.
6) Tell you the object that is in front of me.
7) Dare you to do this yourself in your own journal.

International Con-Goer!
General | Posted 11 years agoSo this past weekend I became an International Congoer as I went to the foreign shores of Canada to attend my first international furcon! Huzzah! While the con itself was underwhelming it was nice meeting the few new folks I met up with and also to hang out with the newly coined "Wilderness Coalition" consisting of
amato,
catamount and
breadfox.
Anyway...started off running late and without my carrier pigeons to warn
amato of my late departure only to later miss a turn and take a tour of scenic Detroit. After taking a near two hour detour we finally rendezvoused with leg two and headed south to Canada! Once in Canada, we were devastated. First by the inability to exchange bills into Canadian Monopoly money, and then by the missing of the Stores of Booze due to closure. So needless to say Friday was a depressing and sobering night.
Saturday was better, started off on the right foot then onto the left to walk around Canada for poutine and beer. Went to the games and a few panels and met up with some fellows before returning to hang with the Wilderness Coalition for the remainder of the night. Ended up as one of the last men standing in the group and got crazy on the dance floor. Fun times. I may have also lost some dignity but haven't heard anything from Lost and Found yet.
Sunday was a somber day, said good-byes and packed up shop to come back to the good ol' United States of Freedomland. Border crossing was fun, with a Customs Agent that took the most roundabout way of trying to tell us that he was from the Lansing area and also amusing us with his take on the word "nice."
Overall, a lackluster con but an always excellent adventure. Stayed tune for more updates and adventures as the Wilderness Coalition team up with Injun Red for more debauchery and the saving of innocent booze from their glass captors

ERHMAGERD!! AFN COMMERCIALS!!!
General | Posted 11 years agoSo, whilst carousing aboots the interwebs I rediscovered these gems. Takes me back to when I was overseas and the only radio and TV stations were AFN ones that always reminded us to shred documents and be on the look-out for shady cats.

At AC
General | Posted 11 years agoMade it to AC, if anyone wants to hang out look for a long-haired injun wearing combat boots and shorts.
AC anyone?
General | Posted 11 years agoNo, not Air Conditioning, though this time of year it is also a good thing. Apparently there is a convention held ever year at this place in Pennsylvania that attracts a large group of people called "furries." It seems I shall be attending said convention this year and was wondering if anyone else be heading that way so that I might have the opportunity to meet and mingle with folks. Would be nice to see a few friendly faces at my first AC.
Holy wah!
General | Posted 11 years agoSeems a bit late for an ACR but here she goes...
Attended MCFC a few weeks back, and I'm not sure I ever drank so much in my life since my four-year-long bender whilst in the employ of Uncle Sam's Misguided Children. Things started out sober enough with a midnight bus ride to meet up with my ride and savior
sorcererdale.
Thursday was fun. Met
soulghostpaw and
kidaraindance for the first time since chatting with them, had some food and otherwise did the normal thing for a Thursday night at a con. Friday was a bit abnormal. Attending
breadfox 's room party attired as a yooper and made merry with many old friends of mine that I hardly see save for the occasional con. It was a night to remember. Many drunken memories were made and much camaraderie was had. Saturday seemed like a carry-over of Friday and was filled with more merry-making and revelry. Sunday was a blur and was likely one of the craziest times I had at a con. All in all an awesome time. I also further cemented KBC beer as the king of the Keweenaw and UP in general as well as get beer-haters to beer-drinkers. I am a bad influence.
Overall, the most fun I've ever had at a con. I reunited with friends I don't see very often, met new folks and mates and had a most excellent time. This con is definitely the best con to meet friendly and carefree folks.
