General | Posted 14 years agoGet woken up on my day off to a fire alarm at 6am, stand outside in the cold, wait in an office for 3 hours while dogs go through my room without me present for the search, then (slightly intoxicated and very much pissed) have a reenlistment interview where the commander asks me why I don't want to stay in the army. Priceless.
Happy 2012!
General | Posted 14 years agoIt's about 30min past midnight here in Korea so may as well say happy new year, furfags! Kinda buzzed, have work tomorrow at 7, feeling pretty alright. Looking back at stuff 2011 was both an awesome and a fucking shitty year; but I'd like to think I came out with more good than bad. If nothing else it marks the last real leg of my time in the Army which by itself makes the year worth it. My resolution for 2012: Don't do anything to get myself demoted before I'm about to ETS.
Heres to a smooth year!

ruined crime scene/bad drivers/ranting foxes
General | Posted 14 years agookay, just one ranting fox in this journal.
So sitting in the office bullshitting with the NCOIC and another SGT when I get a call on my duty phone from the desk. "Hey, uh, there's a TA (traffic accident) when you take a right out gate 3. You may wanna take someone cuz uh, its a roll-over". Fuck yeah I wanna take someone! So we all bolt out and hop into a couple cars, take a right out gate 1, pass gate 3, pass camp castle, and radio to the desk asshole that we still don't see anything. Desk asshole says he made a mistake and it's left out gate 1 so now we look like jerks running lights&sirens the way we just came. Fast forward 2 minutes, we're on scene. Problem is though that the Korean National Police (KNP) douchesticks have already ruined fucking everything. 4 of the 5 car involved had the hooks attached to them and were towed away already, some dickbag is sweeping the evidence from the impact point out of the road, and a cock holster with a white police hat is directing traffic right over my debris. My NCOIC starts flipping shit to one of the KNPs while I block off the road and some bus driver looks at me like I have a dick growing out of my forehead for not letting him through. We spent the next 15min trying to measure shit and photograph before we figured it was pretty much ruined, said fuck it, and cleared scene to station.
After getting back it was about lunch time so that SGT from my section and I go over to a restaurant on base. Oh joy- phone rings again. Vehicle to pedestrian accident right across the street from where I was. So much for my fuckin' spaghetti. We run outside and a bunch of random E6 and E7s are huddled around some female SGT laying on the curb. Apparently one of them already had EMS on the way so I bitched for them to hurry up a little bit over the radio while my E5 tries to keep her conscious. Yada yada yada, process the scene, 15min later I'm walking the witness back across the street to my office so I can get some statements from them.
But wait, there's more! I'm walking the witnesses into the station when I bump into some CPL in front of the station desk who goes "hey! remember me?". I tell him no, and he informs me that he's the guy I "gave some bogus ticket to". I look at his receipt and remember it's some assfuck from 2 days ago who I cited for trying to drive down the road with a blatantly flat tire at 20km under the speed limit with his 4 way flashers on instead of just putting on a new tire. He says he's here to find out where he can contest the ticket and I tell him that since there's no monetary fine he can't fight it. His commander can can decide not to take any action on it- but no matter what my office assesses the violation for 3 points and after 12 we'll suspend his license. He asks if he can talk to my supervisor and I politely tell him to suck a dick. I go back behind the the desk to grab some paper and notice that now this chode is trying to cry to the desk sergeant now. I walked up and just kinda smirked while the d/sgt filled the guy in that the entire process of tracking violations is run by my office and after he's talked to me there's nobody else to bitch to. The guy got pissy and stormed off, but just kinda added to the shit of the day.
Wound up getting off my 12 hour shift about an hour late, worked 2 hours late last night, and now will have to come in for a while tomorrow on my day off to finish one of the investigation from today and track down info from KNP about injuries. Its k though; got a full bottle of 100 proof vodka so on the express train to happeh. Seriously though. Fuck people. ^^

Finally settled into korea
General | Posted 14 years agoWelp, my unit was supposed to move into a new barracks in August before I got here but we just moved in last night. I'd waited on unpacking most of my stuff and getting a hardline internet connection until the move. It feels good being able to unpack all my stuff (even though I'm faced with the sudden realization that I have waaaaaay too much clothes). Wanna go out and find some cheap bits of furniture that I won't feel bad about leaving behind when I return to the US. I have a roomate now which is less convenient, but he's cool. Mostly I'm just glad to be in a place without having to worry about moving again for a year. Good times~

Occupy Wall Street
General | Posted 14 years agoI think it's safe to declare OWS over. Not just because the police dispersed people from the park with minimal force and impressive speed, but because this is where the movement most visibly has changed from a spontaneous expression of people's frustration with a broken system to a bunch of fringe leftists out of touch with reality.
This is really weird coming from me since I identify myself in every way as a Communist, but it's like OWS is living in a fantasy world. Overall, the New York Police Department has responded to the protest very softly. Whereas occupy Boston, Chicago, Oakland, and other similar demonstrations were met with riot gear on day 1, the NYPD pretty much just set up barricades and asked people nicely to stay on their side. The only time that NY Police made large scale arrests were when the protest tried to make it's way onto a busy and vitally important bridge which would have blocked traffic and caused major problems.
For the most part, the police response in OWS has been soft. While a lot of manpower was on the ground in terms of law enforcement, until last night most special equipment and gear stayed out of the equation. Officers in non-intimidating normal duty uniforms manned the barricades with an army of white-shirted high ranking supervisors right behind them. Most arrests or incidents of force weren't carried out by an over zealous beat cop but rather a ranking officer with enough experience and respected judgement that they may of well written the policy on such a situation. If there's one thing that the protest in NY hasn't been, that's violent. The cops have been sitting on their hands and only reacting when pushed beyond what's reasonable.
The park, usually cleaned and inspected every night in order to be within code for a public area like that, hasn't been cleaned ever since the protests began about two months ago. Days ago the mayor of NY personally asked the protestors to temporarily leave the area so that city Dept of Sanitation workers could clean it for a day, but the mob adamantly refused. Now don't get me wrong; I'm not trying to call the protesters dirty people. It's simple logic though (and if you've seen the condition of the camp know it to be true) that you can't set up a tent city for months on end in the middle of lower Manhattan and expect it to be anything that would resemble the word clean or safely livable.
What happened the other night with the removal of OWS protestors from their camp was extremely disappointing. Not because of the arrests or use of force, but because of how unreasonable the protesters have been. Obviously details are still filtering in, but from every video I've seen the mob looks like they're reacting to the holocaust while police with helmets try to just push them (not gas, not spray everyone, not beat. push) out of the park. I saw one video where a few very unharmed protestors were sitting in the back of a police van and from the sounds of the crowd you would think Rodney King was getting beaten right in front of them. The way things have played out, I find it very hard to sympathize with the mob (despite their very legitimate complaints and message against corruption) while the authorities and City of NY have behaved so civil.
Damn it feels good being awesome
General | Posted 14 years agoSo yeah, feeling kinda satisfied right now. The other day was kinda crappy- for some reason things were just especially loud outside all day and I couldn't get to sleep. I work a 12hr night shift, so I was already drained when I came into work. Was pretty uneventful for the most part; did some vehicle stops and processed a duty van that backed into and LMTV. A few hours after midnight got a call from my section NCOIC saying that I was gonna have to stay late. Reason? A bunch of generals and high ranking officers were coming in the next day, including GEN Thurman who's the general of US Forces Korea Command, United Nations Command, and Korean/US Combined Forces Command. I fucking hate being around too much rank and try to avoid it whenever possible, but Traffic sections are tasked with a fuckton of different roles which happens to include VIP escorts.
Lucky me, the helicopters started landing at about 0630hrs, which is awesome (sarcasm) because that's the time that morning PT starts here. Sent the next couple hours driving around formations with my lights on and trying to make dumbshits realize they need to get out of my way while a blacked out sedan followed me. Speaking of, where the fuck do grunt NCOs get the balls the think that they can scream "slow down" at a cop car running with its emergency lights on by virtue of them walking in a line on the side of the road with backpacks? Electronic air horn became my favorite rebuttal to this, which was pretty amusing seeing their outrage by my 3rd shuttle run past them.
Apparently the brass were decently pleased that we got them to their little conference on schedule through PT traffic, and I got the 4 star general's coin after it was all done. Yeah, I speed through your formation honking with some top US commander behind me. So what, bitches? *coolface* B]

work, sleep, drink, repeat
General | Posted 14 years agoI guess this means I've finally goten into the normal routine of shit here, and I'm certainly not complaining. Don't get me wrong, US Army in Korea is still very much a mismanaged joke and the military lifestyle is fucktarded, but things are about as decent as can be. I'm working a nights right now, so for all 12 hours of my shift I don't usually see any of the jerkoffs who wasted their lives doing this and made rank- certainly a good thing. As soon as my shift is over I typically pass out, so definitely makes the week go by quick. Big plus though is that I have 3 day weekends now, which was something I haven't had in over a year of working at my old duty station with similar hours. Overall, yeah, things are pretty alright I think. Random status update (mostly because I got tired of that giant meme on my page)

joke assignment
General | Posted 14 years agoSeriously, I can't even take this seriously anymore. My last duty station set a very low bar for the Army in my mind, but as fucked up as the normal Army is, shits even more ridiculous in Korea. Serious headpat to anyone who thinks that assignment to Korea is a real duty station. Biggest congo line of cocksuckers I've ever seen. The combat units all seem under-equipped and saturated with privates, double-standard doesn't do this place justice when it comes to enforcement of regulations, and it's absolutely aggravating seeing people walk around with IR (combat) flag patches like this is a real deployment just because some people from their unit are doing an exercise.
I wouldn't say that I'm depressed about how everything here is terribly fucked up; it's just feeding into my natural cynicism a little too much. The reaction of everyone who came here with me and has been in the Army for a second is the same. Disbelief followed by a sick sort of amusement and washed down with strong alcohol. I need to get the fuck out of this organization. No joke, I need to ETS right now. This is just ridiculous.
Whats spurred this little rant is that this week I begun my law enforcement training. It's an Army thing, so I don't hold that against them. Even though I have more road time, more cases, and am overall better at policing than 99% of the company I really can't complain about this alone: you need to certify at every post you go to. What DOES get to me though is the course content. The first day made me realize just how menial my job has been made and how gimped my authority is over here. Its more than a little disheartening to listen for 2 hours about how here they want you calling the desk before so much as taking a piss when you're coming from a traffic section where my patrol was loaded up with better equipment than state police had, I was responding to actual emergencies, and could enforce the laws fairly regardless of a subject's position. I just about lost it when they told us that people of a certain rank who are being arrested shouldn't be placed in handcuffs. Goddamn, US soldiers have gone out and raped 2 locals in 2 weeks- you'd think that this would be a good indication that maybe our security guard model of MP work in Korea needed some revision. This shit is ridiculous.

First week at my new unit
General | Posted 14 years agoWhere I'd last left off I had pinpoint orders for Camp Yongsan in Seoul- not quite the case. Last friday I went to my battalion HQ which is located at Yongsan; they assigned me up north. I'm up at Camp Casey now, which a lot of people may recognize as the last major camp north before you get to the DMZ. Originally I was less than enthusiastic since I'd heard a lot of horror stories about this place, but honestly it doesn't seem half bad so far. The place is relatively well built up, comfortable, and most importantly theres a Taco Bell on post. All week I've continued to in-process the unit and get back in the swing of things, but so far I have no major complaints. I was even able to get shown around by infantryfag Yuki_C_Fox who's been here a hot second longer than me, haha.
Right now pretty much just a waiting game for me. I'm being assigned to work as a traffic accident investigator again (so far) with response to all of Area 1 (the northern most part of the country. yeah, I'll keep busy) so I'm standing by to qualify with the unit on the M9, go through the organization's law enforcement certification, get my military driver license for korea, and at the start of October finally be allowed to drink again! (it's a policy that for that new soldiers can't leave base or consume alcohol for their first 15 days in the unit. haven't had a drink in a bit over 2 weeks now so starting to miss it a little bit. hah). That's pretty much the extent of what I've been up to for those who care. Lifes pretty alright. =]

Korea! =D
General | Posted 14 years agoSo yeah, its been a very eventful past few weeks. My PCS leave went pretty outstanding. Got shmamered into oblivion non-stop for 5 days in Oklahoma with nikolaiswiss, chubbyhusky, their roomate, and Hallix. I think I easily consumed more alcohol in that week than I have in the past few months. When I got back to NY I stopped over in Mass to hang out with Azban; which of course involved more drinking, watching south park, and pointing out how much of a closet homo the guy is. A very successful trek! Finally got home and spent a day and a half with my parents for a little change of pace.
The trip from NY to Korea was pretty smooth. The fact that I missed out on all the 9/11 media circlejerk by sleeping through a pacific flight just makes it better. Landed at OSAN Air Base and made my way over to Camp Yaongsan for in-processing. The unit here receiving and processing all of us doesn't have enough barracks room so the first night I spent in a hotel in Seoul. Honestly the whole thing is a clusterfuck; which is surprising after they've been doing this for 60 years. Overall though it's been a pretty painless process. I just got my pimpoint orders for where I'll be in country, and I'm going to be staying here at Yongsan. This place seems pretty cool and I hear a lot of positive things about it, so I'm real satisfied with this.
That's prettymuch the overview of stuff. Hopefully soon I'll be in a barracks with internet. Got a Korean cell phone yesterday, so at least I an stop running up my AT&T bill now. hah

PCS leave
General | Posted 14 years agoSo yeah, I cleared my last duty station the other day. Felt kinda good to be moving on but I'll definately miss all the people I worked with. I think I had a pretty good run at Ft Drum and had the privilege of working with a lot of outstanding soldiers/civilians, but the way things are headed I think I jumped off of a sinking ship. I'm looking forward to Korea where I think I've been put on the gains roster for a traffic section on a camp located a good distance from the DMZ.
Right now enjoying some leave down in Oklahoma with these guys:
and getting pretty drunk on a routine basis (and by that I mean a perpetual state of intoxication. It's wonderful <3 ).
Spending a few days down here then going back up to visit family in NY. Gotta sort through all the stuff I've accumulated over the years to decide what I really want to bring with me which I'm not looking forward to, but overall I'm pleased with how stuffs playing out. Hell, lifes good. =]

Almost gone
General | Posted 14 years agoGetting down to the wire on my time left at this instillation. I've been stationed at Fort Drum for the first 3 and a half years of my time in the military, and honestly it hasn't been horrible. I was thankful to be stationed in New York where family and friends back home were just a 6 hour drive away, I'm more comfortable with extreme cold weather than heat so the climate worked out nicely, and I've had a lot of great guys in my units. Deploying out of here was smooth and I'm satisfied with the way my time in Iraq went. Upon getting back I would say that being transferred to permanent garrison was the best thing professionally to ever happen to me. I learned a lot about law enforcement and got a lot of good experiences out of it. Not to be an arrogant prick, but it's probably not a stretch for me to consider myself one of the most competent law&order MPs on the instillation. It's the one thing in the military that I've really excelled in by receiving more positive community feedback, commendations from both garrison commander and the provost marshal, and more completed cases than any other MP currently on the road. I've met all the goals I set out for when I entered the military and still have 580 days left.
At this point I kinda feel like the same I did in the last weeks of high school; I honestly don't care about what's happening around me. I'm still doing my shift work (and due to personnel shortages will likely be on patrol until the day I go) to the best of my ability but I'm just not bothered by the bullshit as much since I'm leaving very soon. In between shifts I'm squeezing in my appointments to out-process and in between that I'm trying to drink away the part of the day that I can't sleep away.
I've been working to put a lot of personal shit in perspective and work on being a more satisfied individual. I've been going out with friends (both from my unit and a good guy I met in the area), been chatting a whole lot with the people who's company I value most, and looking forward to taking a little PCS leave with some buddies who have helped me out a lot recently. Not sure how well things are coming on this front; kinda just trying to fix myself. There's my little update on life at the moment for those who care. hah

One month left!
General | Posted 14 years agoSo yeah, start of September I'll be leaving for Korea. I've been at this duty station since I got out of basic/AIT so kinda got used to things here. I really liked the job I've had for the past 18 months and the unit I've been assigned to; that's mostly why I tried so hard initially to have my orders for Korea deleted. The way things are changing here though it almost feels like I'm dodging a bullet. MP work in Korea sounds like a joke, but can't be worse than going back to the battalion that's about to assimilate garrison here. I guess I'm kinda excited at this point. If nothing else, one step closer to my ETS. haha
I've done 74 of the 120 stupidest things?

General | Posted 14 years agoAlright. I've been having a bad week. Out of nowhere it feels I got hit with something I didn't expect and was completely unprepared to handle. I've not been doing well the past few days, and today found out something from another direction.
A few months ago I came on orders for Korea. I wasn't happy about it and tried to get out of it. My unit submitted paperwork twice requesting cancellation of the orders, submitted my paperwork from traffic school to G1 office, made phone calls. Last week I still haven't heard anything back and decided I need to face the reality that I'm gonna be reassigned no matter how much I kick and scream about it. Worth noting is that this isn't just me- all the soldiers assigned as MPI detectives and another guy from traffic from this unit are also on orders for Korea (one of them literally just got back from the school) and their request for change in status aren't being answered as well. I found out why.
With the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan MPs have been pretty widely deployed. To compensate for the number of MPs overseas the Army hired civilian police officers on bases. A lot of the Army doesn't like seeing normal cops on a military post, but the reality is they know their shit and are professional. Most MPs on the other hand have spent the vast majority of their careers working combat duties. For the past decade it seems like the MP corps has looked at our law enforcement role as the bitch POG job that's below them. Most of the people with rank who are MPs made that rank in combat zones and don't know a whole lot about policing. Obviously, this is a problem.
It's more so a problem because the MP battalion here has been trying to take over more control of things. As I said, civilians for a while have been the majority of the cops on base. This is changing with the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan winding down; all of a sudden we have a lot of MPs with very little (if any) police experience without a mission. The MP battalion is making it's move now and playing politics. Civilian cops here are getting cut, battalion officers are being put into administrative positions usually run by civilians, and now the garrison MPs are going to go away too.
As an MP assigned to the garrison we had somewhat different rules. Our unit pretty much only existed to keep track of us and we'd go to work at the station every day falling under the direction of our civilian supervisors. About as little playing Army as possible while still wearing the uniform, and it gave us a good buffer from the politics of a military instillation. For a while they've been talking about having us fall under the MP battalion so they could have better control, and I guess now that's happening. From what I understand in the next few months as most of us from garrison PCS to out of the country and civilian police are dismissed, the MP battalion is going to assume responsibility for providing 'permanent' law&order MPs who go by their rules and play their games. Considering the battalion's leadership is more concerned with how their MP's address officers than the fact that none of their damned people can find their way to a 911 call in under 10 minutes, this is worrying.
Honestly I'm just really depressed about everything right now. The job I've done for the past year and a half is going to go to shit, I'm getting sent somewhere I don't want to go working for an organization I don't respect anymore, and my emotional support that I've relied on for a long time disappeared from under my feet. I'm really discontent with the way my life's going right now.

Back to work
General | Posted 14 years agoFirst, massive WTF @ Army. Seriously, I'm gone for 3 weeks and everything I know is a lie. It took 20min of shift with everyone looking at me like I was crazy to realize that none of them were wearing berets anymore. I think the Army planned to switch to patrol caps right as I went on leave just to fuck with me. Jerks.
Apparently I missed quite a few little things aside from the hat change, but nothing of legitimate importance. I had an awesome time down in Oklahoma. And visiting family too, right! Spent time with a lot of awesome people- I'd say even made up for the fact that I was in a state several times inferior to New York! (very high praise). Gonna have to try to get leave again first change possible and spend some more time with silver. Kinda depressing flying back, but I guess I missed my job. 3 weeks of not being able to issue tickets is a long time; was going into withdrawal.

General | Posted 14 years agoSo at the airport waiting for
strykerwulf's flight to come in. I've got leave till the start of next month which I'm super excited about. Going down to lower-New York to spend a week with my family, then back to Oklahoma for the rest of the time. Been looking forward to this time off for a while; had to submit my leave papers like 5 times before I finally got dates that my supervisor could work with. Leave = great success!

General | Posted 14 years agoSeriously, someone needs to carpet bomb that state. I missed New York <3
fucked for the next 10 days
General | Posted 14 years agoBack in San Antonio again. Acting as cadre for the IMCOM best soldier competition which is all kinds of bullshit. Stuck on Camp Bullis- which is some kinda National Guard shithole. Stuck in a field barracks with limited internet; and limited everything else for that matter. Ghettofab.
