These fires are really getting me, and the rest of Victoria down.
Last Saturday we had perfect conditions for fire- around 118 farenheit or 48 celcius (I haven't done the conversion I dunno if that's totally accurate) with 65mp (roughly) or 100kph winds, and our country was tinder-box dry due to years of extreme drought.

I got home early on Sunday morning after being out and recieved a call from my Mum telling me that my uncle and cousin's house and entire property had been razed by the fires. I cried and cried, but thankfully my family is unharmed otherwise. Now, 3 days on, we've learned that 21 and counting of my Uncle's neighbours and friends have been killed. Country communities are always close-knit and it's hard to stomach that entire towns across Victoria have been completely wiped out.
The official death toll is just under 200 at the moment, but police are expecting it to rise well above 300, which is really fucking scary and sad. They also know that a lot of the bodies will be unable to be identified- bodies completely incenerated in cars on roads, in underground bunkers and even old people still inside homes that have been gutted by the flames, unable to be evacuated or escape by themselves.
My Dad told my brother tonight that the toll is most likely around 240 at the moment but they're telling the public in stages to reduce the shock of having it jump so high so quickly.

Australian's all have fire plans. There are lots of meetings for people who live in the country, discussing plans for the fire seasons including whether people stay to defend their homes, or leave EARLY. The discussions going on at the moment is whether we should implement compulsory early evacuation, or leave it open for personal choice. It sounds like a good idea to me, although there's something like a 70-80% success rate for those who decide to stay and defend. Really though, it truly comes down to luck. My Uncle, who lost 5 of his 10 acre property including his sheds, cottage and house had 60 thousand litresmof water, and big sprinklers spraying his house but still lost everything, whereas some people who hadn't even cleared their gutters of fallen dead leaves and overgrowth haven't lost a thing. It's all luck. The wind changes the direction of the fire avery few minutes, and it races as fast as the wind.

2009 has just blown everyone away. Never before have bushfires taken so many homes (above 900 at the moment) and lives, the biggest death toll in Victoria before this was something like 47 lives, back in 1983. The 2009 Victorian bushfires so far have had the highest fatalities of any bushfire to date.

I'm just waiting for names to be released. I know that someone I know will be one of the dead or at least someone who has lost a home. I haven't slept properly for days. So if I seem snappy or weird on here or AIM/MSN/YC, that's probably why.

Okay so, I've been away during the past week which was delightful, but when i got home I found myself with a case of art block.

My band is going on a tour for a week (ooh!) as of today so I'll be away from here but I am taking my laptop and tablet so that I can fit some creative time in there other than playing music.

I know that swapping accounts probably should have come with some fresh art, but I've never really had art block until now and it's just a bit of a bitch to crack.
