Posted 11 years agoSpeaking from the heart
Posted 11 years agoI found myself replying to an old blog post from an American who was here in Australia during the 2011 floods and I just sort of zoned out as i wrote out a reply that i rarely write, something that I honestly feel. I know I often can be rather opinionated about what is wrong with this country and the world (yet for some reason people like me for it, weird) but very rarely do i write from a position of emotional standing. Maybe it is because I have had a few drinks tonight that I feel comfortable enough to write like this, I dunno. Below is my response to this 3 year old blog post.
I know this is about 3 years late, but I just want to say that living in one of the areas that was fairly hard hit in the Jan 11th 2011 floods and helping with preparations is one of the things that really makes you put things in perspective.
When you are walking through rising water in the main street of your town, a sandbag on each shoulder looking at the businesses and homes being inundated ahead of you, you find the only thing that goes through your mind is 'That one is gone, that one is already under, maybe we can save the one 3 shops up where the water has not risen to yet etc"
But it hits you really hard when you have lived in the town your entire life and you either know everyone or you know someone who knows them. I live maybe 30 minutes drive from Grantham, the small town where the flood ripped through with no warning and most of the 2011 flood deaths occurred.
After the waters receded we here in the rural areas tried to pick up and rebuild, ignored by the Government, the media and other Australians because by then the flood waters had risen in Brisbane and 'caught the inhabitants completely by surprise' despite the fact that they had 3 days warning or so of it coming.
We shoveled away tons of mud, we rebuilt and helped those who the insurance companies had scammed with 'flood cover' policies that did not actually cover floods and tried to get one with our lives.
Jump to Jan 2013, almost 2 years to the day, our area got hit again, this time higher, faster and more destructive and we locals watched everything that we had worked to rebuilt be destroyed and buried under tons of black, foul smelling mud. It was our highest on record and once again you find yourself waist deep in muddy water, fighting currents to try and same businesses and property before you are forced to give up by the rising waters.
I guess what I am trying to say is that the spirit of Australians is such that you feel you need to overcome all the crap that happens. Once the waters had gone down the entire town, from people unaffected to people who had lost everything, descended on the effected areas to clean up and help each other out.
This is what Australia used to be, a country of 'help your mates out' and 'always someone to lend a hand' when they were needed. In the cities this feeling is largely gone, replaced by the 'my time is important and worth money' type mentality that has sadly become so common these days. In the rural areas it has been slow to take hold and we still help each other out, be it bush fire, flood, drought or Insurance/Government incompetence/interference.
It makes me proud to be Australian when you see the pulling together and the mateship that this country was know for.........but it saddens me that it takes a major disaster to get people today to show that mateship.
If you really want to see the 'Real' Australia, get away from the cities, get away from the big 'touristy' areas and come out to the small towns. Take a look at their history, talk to the people, listen to what they have to say and you will see that what you see in the city is nothing like the real thing.
~Redtail
Now I know I am going to get a lot of hate from those city dwellers who think that the entire world revolves around them and their concrete domains but at this point I do not care. I have heard it all before and the whole response of City people and their treatment of those rural communities and peoples is just sickening. It depresses me that often when I meet some city individual who has pulled their heads out of their 'modern world' to come out and take a look at our 'backwards, old fashioned rural communities' that they find the need to complain about the fact that we haven't got a fast food place on every street, or that the whole town shuts down around 7pm (except the pubs which go until 1am or so), or that we do not have trendy coffee shops everywhere, or that our shops do not open on Sundays and are only half day Saturdays......
I just wish that they could see the Mateship, the sense of community, the feeling of knowing everyone and being able to say 'g'day' or 'good morning/afternoon' to people in the streets without them looking at you like you are going to mug them or stab them or beat their heads in. The worst thing is that these city dwellers have a larger say in how things are run because the Government only cares about the large population centers because of the number of votes they can get. And with the constant inflow of some of the worst American cultural influences, like the need to sue everyone when you do something stupid, the 'pants halfway down your arse and hat on backwards' youth fashions, the 'I'm so important' mentality and the 'Unless you have 'X' amount of money you are nothing' and we will no doubt see the traditional Australian Mateship, Culture and willingness to help someone vanish completely.
*shakes head and raises glass of beer*
So here's to the traditional Australian culture and values, to holding a door for an elderly woman or volunteering for the State Emergency Service or Rural Fire Service. To helping your mates out when they need it. To cleaning up after natural disasters not to get your picture in the paper or to get paid, but because it is the right thing to do.
I just hope that when such things do finally die out, so do I, as having seen just how bad this country has gotten in the past decade, I do not want to live in a world where today's teenagers are in charge.

Streaming - Bush tucker man episodes - Finished
Posted 12 years ago*blows the dust off of his livestream channel and coughs* well, looks like this has not been used for a while. I know I am not the most reliable of livestreamers but I do intend to attempt to be more regular with my livestreaming.
I have something special up my sleeve tonight, something from my childhood that really caused me to become interested in the history of this great country I live in and I am sure quite a few people my age would have the same memories of this particular show.

Help finding a certain Fur
Posted 12 years agoToday I received a strange message from a fur on my watch list which contained the following:
"My friend Jack once knew a fur from Brisbane called Vox (real name Aaron), a white leopard. They were close close friends but then his email stopped working and had no way to message his Aussie friend. They've not spoken in two years or so and it upsets him every now and then... some of you don't give a hoot about journals or stuff but please... help me find this leopard and help me reunite two friends who shouldn't have been apart!"
If anyone knows this 'Vox' can you let me know so I can pass it along?

Post FURDU 2013 report
Posted 12 years agoAs some of you have no doubt heard, I attended the FURDU convention on the Gold Coast the other weekend.
All I have to say is that I was not only impressed by the hotel and the quality of this years con, but i was absolutely blown away by it.
I even managed to pick up an awesome fursuit at the dealers den for cheap and I love it http://www.furaffinity.net/view/10495343/ although I did tend to neglect my other fursuit during the event, leaving him in his storage box for a good amount of the time and wearing the new suit instead, which i feel really bad about, almost as if I had excluded a close friend from the fun :(
The location was well situated in terms of food places and attractions and was the best FURDU yet.
My congratulations and thanks to the volunteers and Staff of the event for making such a memorable occasion, i hope to see you all next year.

Posted 13 years agoAs many of you all know, or at least have guessed, I like trains (first one to link that video gets their ass kicked) and I know that quite a few people here on FA also have a soft spot for trains, old and new....steam, diesel or electric. To that end I have on my harddrive a few documentaries on railways here in Australia that people will like to see. But I also have a great interest in technology of the past, such as old aircraft, old trucks, paddle boats and sailing vessels.
This stream will be: 'Paddleboats of the Murray River' followed by 'Railways of Yesteryear'
Anyone wanting to join me can find me here in about 25 minutes
http://www.livestream.com/Redtail_Foxaroo?t=263514
Hope to see you there and who knows? you might even learn something you did not know before.
This stream will go for as long as the connection holds out.
Also on the cards are a few other documentaries that I have up my sleeve
*Edit*
Thanks for those who attended despite the technical difficulties. I am going to try and stream somewhat regularly although as to when I do not know.

A question to all my watchers regarding trains
Posted 13 years agoHow many of you would be interested in attending a livestream about steam locomotives if i started one in the near future? I know that there are a lot of people on my watch list who are interested in old locomotives and how railways run, so this is your chance to speak up now.
Would you come and watch?

Gaming Stream - Dead island with the Foxaroo - Over
Posted 13 years ago'What?' I hear you all say,'a gaming stream from the Foxaroo? impossible'
But it is true, after getting Dead island the other day off steam and playing through it a little, I am enjoying it enough that I feel confident enough to actually stream it for your entertainment.
Be advised, the internet here and my computer seem to be in disagreement so the stream may have a few glitches and bugs as well as the fact that I am not a PC gamer, i play better on consoles but I am getting better at this.
We will be joined by a special guest in this stream. My friend
Espilonarge will be joining me in a common goal, the total destruction of Zombies on the Island.
As usual, I can be found here http://www.livestream.com/Redtail_Foxaroo?t=263514
Come along and hear me swear at Zombies XD
Will start this stream soon
*EDIT*
Thanks to everyone who came and watched us swear at zombies despite the technical problems.

STREAMING - old films of Australia - FINISHED
Posted 13 years agoI have decided to take a walk back down memory lane, from today's fast paced world to Australia's golden age, by watching some films shot by the Australian Government's official film unit between 1911 and 2009, although the ones I have on the list are more from the 30s to the 70s.
Anyone wanting to join me can find me here shortly http://www.livestream.com/Redtail_Foxaroo?t=263514
Hope to see you there and who knows? you might even learn something you did not know before.
This stream will go for as long as the connection holds out.
Also on the cards are a few other documentaries that I have up my sleeve
*EDIT*
Once again the stream has drawn to a close, thank you to all of those who popped in to say hi and relive some of the nostalgia with me. I am gonna try and do this each weekend for expect more next week :)
