U.S. Supreme Court case Hollingsworth v. Perry
Posted 12 years agoAfter reading the whole transcript of today's opening statements...the case fascinates me. There's much potential within the case for great political change...however, neither side seems to have a clear, concrete argument in regards to the effects on the case outside of Cali, least from what I can tell. I don't know, I'm not a lawyer, but they made enough sense in their statements.
Below is what I could gather on it, I won't speak to the accuracy of what I'm writing, again, I'm not a lawyer. You could get more accurate information reading the transcript yourself.
From what I can tell, the supporters of Proposition 8 ( California's constitutional ban on same-sex marriage ) argue to the interest in preserving marriage as a man-woman union for the purpose of regulating procreation. In addition, the case was made that the issue should remain a state by state basis.
Those opposed argue civil rights and violation of the 14th Amendment. That this is not something that can wait, as it negatively affects a minority every day no action is taken on the federal level.
However, the case gets interesting because the defendants are a private group defending the law because the state of California won't. The court seems to be scratching their heads a bit over what to do in regards to the case, and if it even has business going outside of Cali, seeing as the highest court in that state ruled Prop 8 unconstitutional.
Whatever the court decides, it could have drastic consequences. Could set the gay rights movement back dramatically, could strike Prop 8 as totally unconstitutional, re-opening same sex marriage in California, or it could go so far as to affect every state in the nation.
Ruling is projected to be made in June...and with a case regarding DOMA having it's opening arguments tomorrow...these are interesting times.

Any Trauma Center fans out there?
Posted 12 years agoI was digging through my room so I could clean things up, and I realized I have two copies of Trauma Center New Blood. If anyone's interested, lemme know. I'm not looking to get monies for it, but if you pay shipping, it's yours.
For those who don't know anything about the series, it's a surgery simulator for the Wii. Simulator is taken very loosely here, as you tend to be lasering fictitious parasites and doing all sorts of vaguely wacky stuff. Still, it's one of the few games out there that has motion controls as a viable core to the gameplay, and it remains to be my favorite Wii series of all time.
Note me if you're interested, and again...if you pay for shipping, I'll give it to you.

I'm one lucky bastard
Posted 12 years agoThis morning, I got the rest of my wisdom teeth extracted. It was over quick, but damn I'm still hurting. Either case...I come home an hour later than I was supposed to, and Faelan's there waiting for me. I'd asked him to come keep me company right after the surgery...and he did, without a moment's hesitation. He made sure I kept on the meds, got food in me, and snuggled up to me when I went to lay down because the pain got to be a bit too much.
What made it so nice...he did it because he wanted to, not because he had to. And his comfort was immeasurable, it helped me relax quite a bit. Just...to have someone like him...yeah, I'm a lucky bastard.

Rock and a Hard Place?
Posted 12 years agoOkay, so I'm still working on finding a good virtual tabletop for the campaign I want to do. The other one is just too headache inducing. I found one that supports everything, including character sheets. This makes me a happy bugger. Downside...it's pricey, and I can't modify it unless I buy it.
The conundrum is this: I need to buy it in order to mod it. It costs $40 for the GM version, and $24 for the player version. However, if it were bundled with a 5 pack ( 1 GM and 4 players ), it would be $20 a person. So it'd be cheaper per person to bundle it...but we'd all have committed, and be stuck with it if it doesn't work out.

Posted 12 years agoHow do you measure a year? How about love?
I'm feeling happy and hopelessly romantic today. After all...today is Fae and I's anniversary. So much happened, we almost didn't make it this far, but here we are.
I may have fucked up the rest of the week, but today will go right. 'Cause even when I mess up, he comforts me and helps me fix things ( instead of chewing me up for screwing up ).
A year ago today, I agreed to meet a lonely dragglephin at a diner in his hometown. We sat, and we chatted. We laughed, and then we went into his car to talk privately and enjoy each others company. Soon, we were opening up to each other...two hurt souls carrying far too much baggage.
He helped me find confidence in my EMT class and abilities, even when the tests kept giving me problems. Just by being with him, I gained enough of a sense of responsibility that I got a job ( and later, a second one when the money wasn't good enough. ). We paid our way to Anthrocon, and our way to FurFright.
Lastly...he helped me discover who I am, and recover from damage dealt by a bad relationship years prior. An aversion to kissing that he broke...among other things.
I could ramble about him all day, but...there is one story I love to share, in specific. It was the middle of July, and I was working at the amusement park. Due to an incoming thunderstorm, they closed the park at 5pm. Sadly, this meant all the people on first shift ( who work until 4pm normally ) had to stay the extra hour. So I'm standing out in a thunderstorm, cold, soaked to the bone, and lonely...and Fae shows up. I tell him that they were making me stay, told him someplace dry he could hole up. But, he didn't move. He stood outside my ride, with that umbrella and that smile, in the middle of a thunderstorm, until I could finally leave ( over an hour of waiting ). I pressed him to find out why he did it, and he told me it was because he didn't want me to have to stand alone in that rain.
I couldn't ask for a better mate. All the little things he does, how happy we make each other...and moments like that Thunderstorm in July. I may not know exactly what love is, but I think he and I are pretty damn close.

Whelp, that didn't work
Posted 12 years agoPostponed the surgery two weeks so I could give enough notice to my work, to be sure I'd get the day off.
Well, as it turns out, I had the day of my surgery off ( and the 2 days after it ), so I didn't need to postpone the surgery.
So that has me pissed. My folks are pissed as well, because now that means that the days they took off from work were wasted. So everybody's pissed, and fuck why do I even bother sometimes?

My two cents about Valentine's Day
Posted 12 years agoIt's a pointless, moronic holiday.
Okay, now for something more specific...I just don't get the point of it. I mean, everyone's getting into this "Valentine's Day" and "Singles Awareness Day" and such...it just makes no sense to me. Here's why:
If you're single: It acutely and often hurtfully reminds you of that single status, especially if you find being single an undesirable state of affairs. Some folks will take this day as a reason to make an advance on a crush, which may or may not backfire spectacularly. Even if it doesn't, the relationship is started because of a forced air of romance due to the holiday, and as my fiance puts it...love is like a fart. If it's forced, it's probably crap.
If you're in a relationship: You're often expected to do something special just because of Valentine's Day. And perhaps not by your partner, but by friends or other folks who know you're in a relationship. I've had a bunch of people ask me what I'm doing for Fae for Valentine's, and I watch their reactions when I say I'm not doing anything special. There's a grand pressure to spend money or be extravagant on an arbitrary date...and if you need to have a specific date handed to you in order to be romantic, then you're doing your relationship wrong. VERY wrong.
So yeah...Valentine's Day. Don't like it. Only special thing I'll be doing this month is celebrating Fae and I's first anniversary...a real reason to celebrate a relationship.

I love the internet sometimes
Posted 13 years agoBecause of the internet, I've been able to reconnect to a cousin I haven't seen in over 5 years.
That moment when...
Posted 13 years agoyour feet hurt, your head is pounding, you're hungry, and you still have a long day ahead of you. But you're smiling like an idiot anyways because it's all worth it.
And they wonder why ( Contains slight vent )
Posted 13 years agoOkay...I do love my family very much. My mom, my dad, my aunt, and uncle are all some of the best people I know. I just hate it when they all get together and I get dragged along.
So lemme outline my night here. My folks ask me if I want to go to dinner with them. After some frustration in finding a restaurant, we manage to eat. Pet peeves about the noms...tasteless root beer and I swear the cheese sauce on the mac and cheese is what's making me want to puke. But, I digress.
We finish eating, my folks pull a fast one on me. They go to see my aunt and uncle, and seeing as they're my ride, I have no choice in the matter. They didn't ask me if that was okay, either, they just dragged me along with them. So we show up, and they're in the middle of a movie. My folks join in watching with them, and without anything better to do, I do as well.
Movie's done...my gut's starting to feel off. Parents and relatives start talking, about this, about that, plans and responsibilities, some gossip. Stuff like that, the usual social things to talk about. I'm more or less totally left out of this conversation, just left to sit there. No movie to keep my attention, nobody to talk to, and you can probably see where I'm starting to get irritated.
Finally, it reaches 9pm. By now, we've been out of the house since 5 and been at my relative's place for about two and a half hours. Folks finally say it's time to leave. It takes them half an hour just to say goodbye!
So three hours of sitting with my thumb up my bum, sitting there passively while my parents and relatives all have a good time together. I do love spending time with my family, but it just grinds my ass when I get dragged along to what's clearly someone else's quality time, and then I'm left out in the process. I mean...I wish I could've talked about the class I'd taken today, or talked more about work. But I really couldn't, they all just kept going on and on.
And my folks wonder why I don't like going with them to visit family.

~ Where did the name of your fursona come from:
I originally went by an old screen name "nickhunter13", in fact there's still an account to that name on this site. However, it just wasn't natural enough for me, in terms of conversations and RP. I mean...who has that kind of name? So, I brainstormed with a friend who played D&D and after a few hours we settled on Renoch.
The och came from loch, such as Loch Ness. Mainly because I absolutely love that sound. Ren just kinda wiggled in...we went through dozens of syllables to try and work one out.
~Why did you choose that species?
I originally went with Eagle...but again, it didn't fit. So I thought to my favorite creature, and eventually thought a dragon would be best. Sure enough, it's fitting.
~what color is your fursona and why?
Emerald Green, because that's my favorite color. Don't think I need to go into much detail there.
~What is you fursona's personality and how does it compare to your RL personality?
He and I are basically one and the same...long story. After my entire life fell apart, I ended up building this character, someone who wasn't perfect, but who I could aspire to be like. So I eventually started taking on his characteristics, working my way back up onto my feet by making the character someone I could become. Sounds kinda weird, but...it did help.
~what is one item your fursona owns that is significant to you IRL?
The chainmail ring. It's not just any ring...it's an engagement ring, one of two. Crafted by his own claws, to give extra meaning behind the gesture beyond just some random band of metal. I actually made those rings, too...I think that speaks louder for my intent than if they were gold and laced with jewels.
~How has your fursona changed over the years?
His wings were originally green, and he was much much larger. He shrunk down when he finally realized he didn't have to try and act so adult-like and mature...when he could stop acting older than he was.
~How long have you had this fursona
Two years now.
~Would you like to be more like your fursona?
Honestly...I don't want to be any more like him than I already am. We're practically one and the same...I'm more used to being called Renoch than I am my legal name, and it feels more comfortable than my legal name too. Maybe I'll get a name change.
However, I would love wings. Because flying is amazing.

Mall Meet Report
Posted 13 years agoI had a blast. Spent too much money, but had a blast. Made new friends who are nerdy and well versed in both DnD and 40k...which makes me happy. Atop that...got to see what an apartment owned by furs looks like. I officially like this.
Recliner Pros and Cons

Ah the memes
Posted 13 years agoI always think these things are silly, but, meh. Why not?
1. What are some complaints against your mate? If you don't have one, complaints about the world?
Hrm. Complaints about my mate? None of anyone's business but he and I.
2. What is your favorite animal?
Dragon goes rawr and eats cows. Works for me.
3. What is your favorite food?
Sushi, or anything with fish.
4. What is your favorite color?
Green.
5. What is your favorite drink?
Root. Freaking. Beer.
6. What is your favorite part of the human body?
Personally, I like the hyoid bone because it's the only bone in the human body not directly connected to any other one. Pretty cool, I think.
7. What is your favorite kind of flower?
The rose.
8. What is your favorite mythical creature?
Dragons
9. What is your favorite holiday?
I always like the Summer Solstice.
10. What is your opinion on Valentines Day?
I won't share...don't want to spoil any surprises.
11. What do you think is the biggest evil in the world?
The greatest evil in the world, I think, is a lack of unity amongst people. We herald those who are generous and help others as uncommon...when it should be something everyone does out of habit. I get pissed when I see a random act of charity plastered on the front page of the news, because that exalts this as something special, something rare. It honestly pisses me off. People should do more to help other people.

Funny how laws work
Posted 13 years agoA new law that went into effect at the start of the year requires those over the age of 18 to get an Adult Learner's permit and hold it for 90 days before they can test for their license. I approve of this law, it makes it so that not anyone can just drive ( legally ), they have to at least prove they know enough they won't hurt anyone.
However, I am affected by it. I just missed the exemption window, meaning I need to get that permit. So...my quest for my license just extended out until April at the soonest. No matter, I got to get that permit today, so I can take those last few steps and finally finish the damned thing.
In other news, no word about my EMT license from the state. I should get it this month, but it is annoying as hell to have the training and not be able to do a thing with it.
Work should resume normality as the college kids go back to school, which will be nice. I'm getting tired of double digit paychecks.
Anyway, off to get my permit. The smile on the picture'll be genuine for once...

Where I stand at the turning of time
Posted 13 years agoInstead of doing those New Years Resolutions and any of that stuff...I do a sort of year in review, to see where I stand now compared to where I was.
In the past year, I graduated high school and got my EMT-B. Both of these were multi-year endeavors, so finally seeing them to closure is a heartwarming feeling. I may not be able to put it to use yet, but I'm starting to walk down that path.
I joined the local Volunteer Fire Department, following in one of the few family traditions I honor. Fourth in the line, I can't really describe that feeling.
In terms of my driver's license...I'm almost through with driver's ed. I should have it before spring, with luck and a bit of effort.
Over the course of the year, I got 2 separate jobs...managed to make about 4 grand for myself. One of them ended in the fall, but the other one stands to last for a while longer than that. Most of the earned money was spent, but I still have a fair sum, which was only increased by a trust fund given to me. I don't have to worry about paying for college anymore, and that's one good feeling.
I fell in love. Head over heels, madly in love. He pulled me back from the brink and gave me a reason to live. The challenges we have faced are great and many, and there's only more to come down the line...but I won't give up. We've come too far.
My depression came and went, tearing at me. THere were a lot of extreme emotions, a lot of shed tears, and a difficult holiday season full of death and misery. At least it's over now.
In short...in the past year, I have been through hell and back. Yet, I also have experienced some of the most wonderful things. This year was a quagmire of extreme emotions, on both ends of the spectrum. I'm glad to see it done, though I look to 2013 with trepidation over what may happen, what I may gain, and what I may lose...
