I accidentally all over my code
General | Posted 13 years agoYeah, accidentally wrote a computer macro that tried to divide by zero. I think everyone can imagine how well that went over.
Typical morning for the Emerald Dragon
General | Posted 13 years agoBusiness as usual. Within an hour of getting up, I've set up a job interview for Saturday, signed up for a FireFighter 1 class and Driver's Ed, and done my laundry for work today. At least it's pay day, and the hours should be sweet as can be.
Ro
General | Posted 13 years agoSo I get home from a tough day, and I get a callback on an offer for another job, that should be permanent.
My stomach starts to do flip-flops and I feel nauseated, one of my close friends passes her driving test.
I get a leg spasm writing this journal, a package arrived today in the mail for me.
God...am I like a ying-yang machine or something?

Be kind, get shoes flung at you!
General | Posted 13 years agoThat was my day. Delay the last ride so a person who wants to get on the ride can get on, then they try to fling their flip-flops at my head. Really...it makes me wonder why I'm nice to strangers.
Singing
General | Posted 13 years agoSo, spent the weekend at a party of more or less self-proclaimed hippies. It was a chance to spend time with my mate and a few close friends.
The hilarity of the night was when we were all singing in the living room, just having a blast. Turns out, half the party was crowding onto the stage to get a listen. So, one of the guys running the music for the event set up a few microphones, and we were requested to sing.
Such positive reviews, I don't think any of us were expecting to either do that, or that as a group we sounded as good as the audience said we did. Now, we're all pondering seriously putting together our own vocal group.

I am human
General | Posted 13 years agoI am human, I make mistakes. I made a bad one today at work, one I promised myself I would never make: I missed a kid's safety belt. No harm came of it, someone caught it and I hit the emergency stop...but, of all the things to screw up, the safety of a child? It shook me up pretty bad, filled me up with all sorts of doubt.
Question now is how quick I can bounce back from it, I don't trust myself working rides anymore. At least it's towards the end of the season, this would've been an awful thing to have happened a month ago...

Double the shifts, double the money
General | Posted 13 years agoThat's the logic, right? Hopefully I don't burn myself out, with yesterday's 11 hour shift still weighing on my energy, and a 9 hour one today to have to survive through.
Ah well, it should be a good day. Weather looks nice, and I might be able to get an easier ride on account of the back to back double shifts...

Water Slide Adventure
General | Posted 13 years agoAh, today. Today conspired to have me...wet. I forgot to chuck my laundry in the dryer, so that kind of wet, in case if anyone was thinking a different one. Then I ended up back at the bottom of the water slide, and there was on and off rain all day. So yeah, I gave up on keeping dry before noon. Such is life, hehe.
Wasn't too bad though, I got used to it pretty quick, and the day was surprisingly easy considering the number of buses. Then came the adventure.
The topside operator went on break, and their coverage was a rookie. Guy made an honest mistake, and he sent a small kid down all on their own. This caused the raft ( and its unfortunate occupant ) to get stuck almost at the very top of the slide. In either case, the kid gave a very natural reaction, by which he started to panic.
That's actually how we figured out something was wrong...his screams lacked the Doppler Effect. They were static, then the topside operator, freshly returned, made the radio call that the kid was stuck. I shut down the water and grabbed the flashlight, while the guy who was doing coverage volunteered to climb down from the top to help calm the trapped kid and give him some light ( he was stuck in a pitch-dark part ).
When the water finally stopped, I started the climb with a rather large flashlight. Love the accoustics in that slide, it was easy to converse no matter how far or close I was from the raft. When we got up there, I introduced myself to the kid and we started to get his raft down.
About ten minutes later, the sopping wet child was comfortably nestled into the arms of his grandfather, and the guy covering for my break had arrived. It was a good little fifteen minute adventure, hopefully the kid doesn't have any lasting psychological trauma from the event.
Looking back on it, makes me realize I really have been born and bred for Emergency Situations. The kid was panicking, the topside ride operator was scared half out of her mind. The coverage guy and I jumped right into the tube, more or less, and we got that kid out safe and sound. While he wasn't in any real damage, it was a subtle nudge to me, reminding me of something I was losing sight of: What I want to do. Y'know, at the risk of that sounding egotistical or such.
Anyway, long journal is long. I'm going to mess with my new chainmail supplies, which arrived in the mail today as well.

Times seem tough
General | Posted 13 years agoI keep seeing and hearing about all sorts of catastrophic events and difficulties people keep having to face on a daily basis. While I'm not immune to such things myself, today being particularly rough on me, I do want to share something with everyone.
Tough as it seems, some things do improve. Just keep chugging at it if it's your passion or if its necessary. And if it doesn't get better or can't get better, let someone else help. None of us can fight all of our battles alone all of the time. I know many furs who're willing to take a listen, myself among them. I'll take time out of my day to read a rant about a tough day, offer moral support and advice in crisis, or try and help with some major trial that faces you.
Now, I'm going to get my ill, scaled butt into bed. May the wind be at your backs, everyone, and no matter how bleak it gets...remember you're not truly alone.

The little things that make a day brighter
General | Posted 13 years agoSo I was working at the bottom of the water slide today. It's a grimey job that tends to leave me soaked to the bone for hours on end. Most people hate it, I love it for being a test against my own endurance.
Anyway, it was an oddly easy day today, and so I had time to watch the train as it would go by. One of the times it went around, I saw a rather bored and grumpy looking kid all on his own on a bench. Thinking nothing of it, I waved.
By the way his face lit up at that, it must've been the highlight of his day. He was nearly bouncing in his seat, waving frantically back. The ear to ear grin was contagious, I found myself laughing from elation to see someone else's day get brighter.
It's the little things that matter most, I swear.

I got spat on at work today
General | Posted 13 years agoThat actually happened, and it pretty much sums up my day at work. Least I'm home with food and cool air...
Tired. Wet. Angry. But on the upside...
General | Posted 13 years agoOrdered rings for my new chainmail project. Going to be learning the new weave, see if I can pull it off with what I ordered. Plus, more colors is a big bonus. With any luck, I'll have enough of them left over to post what I can create...maybe get some artwork on here, finally.
The Legacy Continues
General | Posted 13 years agoToday saw something come to fruition that I have been waiting my entire life for. This afternoon, there was a car fire at a local gas station. I got the tone and went to the fire station, to get onto an engine being driven by my father. This engine is widely regarded as his engine, as he was one of the few who designed it back when they had it custom made.
A firefighter father taking his firefighter son out to a call in his Fire engine...just something about that which filled me up with pride and joy. Just wanted to share that with everyone, if anyone was curious.
P.S. No one was hurt, just to prevent worrying.

In the dungeon rolling dice...
General | Posted 13 years agoWhelp, I missed today's DnD game with the local group because of work. Kinda sucked, but ah well, employment comes before social activity. On the bright side, it gave me plenty of time to start developing my own RPG campaign with a rather old tabletop system ( Top Secret S.I. ). After a sucessful playtest with one person tonight, I'm looking to see if I can get people's interest to try playtesting for more than one person, eventually growing into full groups, if all goes well.
I'm curious if anyone'd be interested? It'd probably be run on IRC, until I could figure out how to use MapTools to provide a virtual tabletop.

Roadblocks and a Vacation
General | Posted 13 years agoToday was anything but a relaxing day off. Too much happened, both good and bad, and now I have to go back in to work tomorrow. Too little rest, too many responsibilities.
So I've decided to take a vacation in a few weeks. Go camping for a while, escape everything and get some much needed rest. Maybe even work on my new commission, if I can get the supplies for it in time.
Hope everyone else is doing okay.

Pride
General | Posted 13 years agoThe past week has been rough. I've had to counsel friends as they lost loved ones, faced some major stressors, etc. But you know, I'm in the mood to be happy tonight, dammit! So I thought...what better way to do that then to look at what I've done and see what I'm proud of.
I'm proud of my diploma. 4 years of high school that tore me down and rebuilt me more times than I care to count. I faced bully students, bully teachers, an insane girlfriend, the list goes on and on. Yet here I am, with the paperwork to prove that I made it out of that solvent and strong.
I'm proud of being on the town Fire Department. It seems simple and such, but it's really not. It's singularly one of the most important things I've ever done in my life...it's the continuation of a family legacy. I'm the 4th generation of my family to join this exact department, and I intend to stay in it until I'm old and grey and am better suited to doing paperwork than wearing turnout gear.
I'm proud of the career path I've chosen. Becoming a Paramedic is not a job everyone can do, and it's no secret that the money isn't overtly great. But it's more than just for the money, after all, and coming home having helped someone seems like a worthwhile career for me.
It might seem like a bit of an ego-stroking, but I kinda wanted to put out a positive vibe tonight, to let people know I'm not a wallowing ball of depressed dragon. Hope it inspires others to do something they can be proud of.

Turnout gear
General | Posted 13 years agoSo I did all of my stuff for the Ambulance and Fire Department. Got myself a set of turnout gear, I can start doing calls with both agencies. Hell, I'm excited now to actually be able to do some good in the world...

Explore every angle before setting your course of action
General | Posted 13 years agoThat is, if you have the time to. I keep forgetting that little snippet of advice, and it keeps biting me in the bum. Ah well, one of these days I'll remember. It was a good night, great furmeet. I didn't have the time I wanted, I had the time I needed, which is a good thing. Now to add a friend to my watch list and wiggle into bed for that monster double shift tomorrow.
Is this ethical or even legal?
General | Posted 13 years agoOkay, I'm not ripping on my work too badly here, but is it even legal for them to not give more than a week's worth of a schedule at a time? I literally know my shifts up to Saturday, they haven't posted next week's schedule yet. If I hadn't had shifts on Saturday, I'd have to go to my work on my own time, and at my own expense, to find out when I was working. This is really starting to bug me...
Shackled by kindness
General | Posted 13 years agoEver have friends that care deeply for you, and are so protective of you that they actually annoy you or even stifle your growth as a person because they try to hide you from things? Had a moment with one of those today...just exhausts me. And it wasn't a good day to start with.
Least I have dinner with a friend tonight, maybe today won't be as lonely of a day as I thought it'd be. Everyone enjoy their fireworks, or at least all of you that live in the United States like me.
