What's the story behind your character?
Posted 11 years agoI've been feeling journal happy lately so here is another for you all. :D I was thinking about characters today and how they always have unique and personal stories behind them, which I like hearing about. So, what's the story behind yours?
I suppose I'll start. :D
Wooper is a feral axolotl, which I made up one night while stocking shelves at Walmart. Since I was on a huge axolotl kick (this was before I had any of my own as pets) I thought it'd make a unique and fun little critter. She represents my derpy, snarly, animalistic side and is waaaay more temperamental than I ever am.
The Wraith is a monster character, that came in three stages. Stage one was my obsession with Hydralisks for Starcraft, which I still harbor to this day. Stage two was a bone version of said Hydralisk, which a lot of people still prefer. (I don't blame them!) And finally we have The Wraith as we see her today, who represents my justice seeking and serious side. Her personality is like my goal when it comes to sticking up for what's right - something I find really difficult sometimes.
So those are my main two. Lets hear your guys'!

Any commission that involves a seasonal holiday (Christmas, Hanukkah, Yule, New Years, etc), or a theme that fits within the season (such as snow, hot cocoa, sitting by a warm fire, gifts, etc) is 10% off! I'm generally pretty lenient with my theme discounts, so if you have an idea but are not sure if it qualifies just contact me about it – it probably will. :)

These commissions will work just like my normal artistic freedom commissions, except that they're guaranteed to be holiday themed! You provide the character and the holiday/seasonal theme you'd prefer, and the rest is left up to me.
- $25 base price
- +$15 per additional character
- You're guaranteed more than $25 worth of art! It's the least I can do, since you're giving me full artistic freedom. :)
I'm aiming to have all holiday and seasonal commissions completely finished by December 25th!

Posted 11 years agoHey everyone! My sprite work for sanctumpolis has been going swimmingly, and as a result commissions will be opening again on Monday, December 1st! EDIT: I'm postponing my commission opening until AFTER FA finishes its database maintenance. I have a few people on my waitlist who I'll be noting individually; you all know who you are so keep your eyes open for that.
I will also be opening for a couple, very limited Holiday themed commissions! These will be 10% off my normal prices just as long as they fit within the festive theme, and will be guaranteed to be finished by December 25th. I'll have more info on that once I open on Monday.
I may also consider having a few seasonal artistic freedom commissions as well, similar to what I did around Halloween. Would anyone be interested in that? Working on sprites for Sanctum Polis this month :)
Posted 11 years agoHey guys, just wanted to give a general shout-out that I'm going to be working on sprites for SanctumPolis the month of November. Due to a number of people's amazing generosity we're able to move forward with creating a playable demo, and as such there are many little pixels that need placing, hehe. :)
I have one commission left from my last batch, so that will be finished this week. I also have a couple people on my waitlist who I'll be contacting privately. This also means there will be less submissions from me for about a month - though who knows, I might go crazy with personal art. We'll see. ^-^

I have a couple last artworks to wrap up during this weekend and the beginning of next week, so I imagine I'll be starting on the new batch around Wednesday or so. :)
BUT THAT'S NOT ALL! This upcoming commission opening will be a super special HALLOWEEN opening! What this means is I'm going to be offering a discount on all halloween themed commission ideas, probably somewhere around the neighborhood of 10%.
Also! I'm considering offering a couple special commission options as well! One is a few halloween-themed artistic freedom slots, where you provide the character(s) and then I get to draw them in any style and way I desire. (Just as long as they stay within the halloween theme, of course.) I'm also thinking of offering a couple "monstrify your character" slots, which is similar to the artistic freedom commissions but where I turn you character into a freaky beast or creature. Or, in the case of some of you, into MORE of a monster. XD
Anyway, I'll have all the details for you in a few days here when I open. I think I'll have around 5 - 7 slots this time around, so lots of space for everyone. :) Let me know if you have any questions in the meantime! Fall/Halloween is my favorite time of year, so I'm very excited for this particular batch. :D

So what exactly is Sanctum Polis? Sanctum Polis is a classic style 32-bit RPG that follows the main character Caxton as he unveils the secrets of Solaris Notre University. It's a classic JRPG style game where you juggle your daily classes with venturing into a dream world at night, along with character interactions, puzzles, and turn-based combat. Personal Post, please read! Very important.
Posted 11 years agoHey guys, I thought I'd fill you all in on something very personal that has been going on in my life over the past five months. My boyfriend and I, who have been together for over 8 years, have started slowly separating our lives from each other due to a hugely unexpected issue that basically slapped us both in the face without warning. It's been an excruciating process but we're both aiming to maintain as much of our relationship as possible, since we are extremely close and best friends. Today was the day we broke the news to our family and roommates, so I decided it was time to tell all of you folks as well. For all of you who I'm close to (and perhaps even if I'm not), feel free to contact me privately and I can give you more information about it. I'd be happy to share.
I'm doing okay. I've had four months to work through a lot of the emotions with him, and we're both simultaneously heartbroken and hopeful for our future relationship together, whatever that may be. This week we're going to work on separating our stuff and moving him into the spare bedroom while we continue to explore the issue. As you can imagine this will slow down my work, but I don't expect any huge delays. Working helps me stay focused and keeps me in good spirits, and besides the days when we're physically moving stuff around I should be making progress on art. I'll keep everyone updated.
I AM a little behind on some notes and skype communication, so I'll be getting back to those people tomorrow once I wake up. Please bear with me if I'm a little slow in getting back to you; if you need me urgently PLEASE send me an email at Rikkoshaye[at]gmail.com and I'll for sure respond to that. You guys are all fantastic, I love you all and appreciate all of the love and support you have all given me so far. There is seriously no better community of people when it comes to stuff like this than furries. I'm really happy to have you all. *hugs everyone* :)

Commissions Resuming - More Updates!
Posted 11 years agoHey everyone! So a lot of you have been concerned about me since my last journal; the outpouring of interest and support has really moved me and I want to thank you all for it. I also figured I should give you all an update!
I'm still not comfortable sharing exactly what is going on, so please forgive me for the lack of details. However, this past week and a half has been nothing short of life-changing (especially religiously), and I'm happy to announce some success in terms of the problem I was having. I think its going to be a long road before the problem is truly taken care of, perhaps a life-long struggle, but the dire nature of it has been (for the moment) abated. So anyway, what this means is that I'm going to be getting back to work. :)
To all of my current commissioners: I'm going to be contacting you all with an update either later today or tomorrow. Also, I used this past week to completely wipe out my to-do list for Sanctum Polis, so that means there shouldn't be any spriting to distract me from my commission work. Thank you all for your understanding and support; its very rare that I run into personal problems that ACTUALLY effect commissions and I'm so grateful that you all have been so understanding. *hugs everyone*

However, over the course of this past week I've been effectively blindsided and then crushed by what is turning out to be the worst thing that has ever happened to me. I won't go into details, but its a big enough event that you all need to know that art may be a little slower for anywhere from a week to a month while I normalize.
I will still be able to work (albeit at a slower pace), but my sleep schedule, eating schedule, and general emotional level will be wildly fluctuating and as a result that may end up delaying me more than normal. As always I'll keep you all updated (especially my commissioners!) and if there are any huge problems I'll contact you. (And, as always please feel free to poke me in the meantime if you have any questions or concerns.)

Posted 11 years agoI have two commissions left to finish (more like one really, since the other is like 90% complete), and once those are done I'll be starting on this next batch! Working in order on one or two at a time went EXTREMELY well this past month so I'm going to be doing that again. :)
These are first paid first served! Once you claim a spot its yours, but the order I finish them in is determined by the order people pay in. I only have two slots available this time around, so I'll either stay open until they're claimed or else close at the end of the weekend, whichever comes first. ^-^

Posted 11 years agoHey guys, this worked really well last time so I'm doing it again! I've made good progress on my current queue and expect to have all but one of them finished by the end of next week. So, according to my current calculations, I'm going to be opening commissions again on FRIDAY, MAY 30th! I'm not sure what time exactly, but probably afternoonish (server time afternoon, that is).
I already have some art lined up for my next batch so I'll only be opening between 2 - 4 slots this time around. In the meantime, this next week will be spent finishing my two current in-progress commissions, and then the rest of the week will be devoted to sprite work for Sanctum Polis. (Which, if you haven't checked out before you totally should! It's a pixel based RPG game and the main character is a Shiba Inu.) Posted 11 years agoI just wanted to give a quick shout-out to a new account I made for the art I buy from other people! This is strictly a place to show off some of the pieces I purchase every now and again, since I'm rather fond of my collection and feel like it should be shared with more people than just me!
So, if you want to see more of my characters you should totally go check it out! A lot of the submissions will contain short stories as well, since I'm not really allowed to flex my writing muscles when submitting art of other people's characters. XD (Though I do often have little ideas in my head that I'd love to include as a story! It just seems kind of... I dunno, wrong to write about other people's fursonas and the like.)

If all 8 slots are filled, great! I will close again and reopen once they are cleared. And if not, I will stay open indefinitely. :)

I'm also going to try a new method where I start and finish only one commission at a time (maybe two if someone is taking a while to get back to me). This might improve my turn-around, I don't know! Posted 11 years agoHey guys! Since getting back from my vacation I've been in art overdrive, and have successfully cleared the vast majority of my outstanding commissions! At my current pace I expect all of my in-queue commissions to be either finished or nearly finished over the next few days. This means that after a 4 month hiatus, I'm going to be opening commissions again on MONDAY, APRIL 28th! I'm not sure if I'll stay open indefinitely like I have in the past, or close again once I get enough slots filled - it'll depend on interest I suppose. :)
I'm going to be making some adjustments to my pricelist, as well as putting up another FA ad, so that should generate some fun excitement over the next few weeks. I'm sure I'll have more public updates for you all once those things get settled. To be honest I'm just glad life has calmed down enough that I can get back to my regularly scheduled art life! Who knew it'd take so long!?
Anyway, let me know if you guys have any questions or anything! And thanks for reading as always. :D

Back from Vacation :D
Posted 11 years agoHey guys! Just giving everyone a general heads up that I'm back from my vacation! I had a great time and it was nice to not have to think about work for a while. I had no idea how stressed out I was until I got down there, so I definitely needed the break. On the plus side all of the snow that was here when I left graciously decided to melt while I was gone, so it seems the long winter is finally over for this year. I can bike ride again! How exciting.
Otherwise I got all of my loose ends tied up today so I'll be back to work on art again tomorrow! If anyone has any questions just poke me anytime. :)

Clearing my Black Friday Commissions
Posted 11 years agoHey peeps! Just letting you all know that I decided to clear my remaining black friday commission queue I took a while back. Things have just been too busy on my end to be able to complete the remaining amount in any reasonable time period, especially since its already been 4 months since I took them in the first place. I figure if I ever want to do a special like that again, I can just re-open slots when I KNOW I'll have time to finish them.

If any of the 6 people I'm clearing are REALLY bummed out by this decision, note me and I'll have you pay ahead of time and I'll get you into my official queue. PLEASE be warned though that my current wait time could be up to 2 months, a fact I'm not 100% happy with but also is outside of my control.
Also, I just want you all to know that you're wonderful people and have been so understanding and supportive. It's important to me to work hard and deliver my products in a timely manner, and is embarrassing and frustrating when real life prevents me from doing that. But every time I send updates and check in with my commissioners, you're all always so NICE and UNDERSTANDING! I wish the entire world was as amazing as all you guys are. It's a pleasure to work for such a wonderful community and I'm really appreciative of you all. :)
P.S.: I'm having a great time on my vacation! Made it down here safe and sound, and it's been a long time since I have been able to run around and do things and not be thinking about work 24/7. Going on Vacation!
Posted 11 years agoHey guys! Just giving you all a general update because I'm going on vacation to Louisiana for a week! I'm taking my laptop with me (as well as my smaller bamboo tablet) so if you need to get a hold of me I'll be around and available to chat. Probably even more than normal, since I won't be as distracted with working 24/7, haha. I'm going to be contacting all of my current commissioners as well to give them a general update and heads up, so if you're currently in my queue keep your eyes open for that!
I'll be leaving tomorrow (April 1st) and will be coming back around the 10th, so its actually going to be a little more than a week vacation. And I might even get to see the Gulf of Mexico! How cool is that!? (I live in Minnesota for all of you who are wondering, which is about as far away from any oceans as you can get.) It'll be nice to go from around freezing temps to mid 80s; I can't even imagine how its so much warmer only a few states down. I'm going to be the whitest person in the entire state, I already know it, haha.
Anyway, off to finish packing now! *flops off excitedly*
