Posted a year agoI should be posting these in the morning but... well, one priority took place over another, and another, and another, and now 6 hours have passed since I woke up. And I've got 2 more to go until I start drawing tonight, finishing up the inks for this comic page.

Posted a year agoAt 6:20 PM ET. Sorry for the delay, had a few things to tie up after my errands over the past two days.
It's tough to go for a while without drawing on the comic, it's all I can think about now. Glad I can finally get back to it.
My goal is to ink 4 panels, including two of the four detailed panels. I will not be able to finish the page, but I can get half the page finished.

Comic sketching stream now
Posted a year agoAs I mentioned yesterday, there will be no streaming tomorrow, so I'm going to focus on getting as much sketching and possibly some inking done as I can.

Comic thumbnail streaming tonight
Posted a year agoAh, comic sketching.
I'm going to be spending the usual 3.5 hours tonight on drawing, but instead of sketching just one page, I'm going to focus on thumbnailing all of the intermission pages at once. These will naturally be very difficult to understand for anyone who doesn't have the script (me), but it's better this way if I have some sort of a guide to decide what should go on one page, what should go on the next, so that every time I start a new page I don't get into a mad scramble to reorganize the script so that every page ends on a natural breathing point. It worked for the kangaroo sequence, so I should try to bring it into the AFCAH pipeline.
Plus, I won't be streaming this Wednesday and Thursday, so this will be a better place to break.

Wolf shading stream tonight
Posted a year agoThe problem with cover letters is when my mind bounces around between reading what I've written, writing more, reading my resume, reading past cover letters, and thinking about what else to write. And that's on top of writing journal announcements for my streams.
I spent last night working for an hour on shading, thinking it would be fast. It's times like those where I still feel like a neophyte, not even sure how to estimate the time it takes to draw. One drawing that takes too long to make... I really need to tone down on my ambitions sometimes. It's not even terribly ambitious, it feels like it shouldn't have taken so long at all.
At least it's not a commission, so I can grumble and groan about how long it takes. Maybe it's best I not take commissions, until I understand why these drawings take longer than I expect.

Posted a year agoTalking during the last stream was... an experience. It got harder and harder to keep going by the end, but it did help keep me focused on inking. Slightly. It also encouraged me to think through my own process. I've been working on improving my inking, and I hope it shows in the final work.
What I didn't get to do was start coloring, so I'll do that tonight. I will get started ASAP... just a couple more minutes to clean up from dinner. I'll be at https://picarto.tv/Rimme at ... well, for sure at 6:30 PM ET.

Inking, coloring, and talking stream tonight
Posted a year agoI'm going to try to do something slightly different in this stream tonight: I'm going to try talking more about my process and what I'm looking for as I'm inking and coloring. At the very least, I'm going to try talking so there isn't as much dead air or just music playing.
Do I even need to announce this? Why do I keep asking questions that I don't need to answer? But basically, I want to try to make a more engaging stream, share some of my thoughts, stay more focused while drawing, and practice opening up to people about what I'm thinking. And announcing it is going to ensure that I stick with it.

Werewolf inking stream tonight

AFewChangesAroundHere . It currently only has the one new page, but it will certainly grow as time goes on.
Is a separate account too much? I don't think so. The comic doesn't have much to show for its 10 years of existence, but I plan to continue it for at least three more phases, and I want the comfort of knowing that the audience for my ongoing PG-13 comic won't be alienated by commission work, by adult work, or by other personal projects on this account.
Speaking of personal projects, I am going to be drawing some werewolves tonight at 6:30 PM at https://picarto.tv/Rimme . How long will it take? Well, seeing as it takes me roughly 1 hour to finish one figure, and I have 3.5 figures to draw... I'm skeptical. But we'll see.

Posted a year agoHow quickly time flies when you're switching between thinking about later pages of the comic, and taking some needed relaxation.
I am having so many weird, fun ideas about what to do with these characters. It's pretty much my mission now to make phase 2 bigger, better, and weirder.

Comic background inks stream tonight
Posted a year agoIf I ever start taking commissions for comics, I'm going to make sure none of them are as detailed as AFCAH.
I exaggerate. It's not as detailed as, say, a Robert Crumb comic. And I'm only spending less than half as much time every day as a full-time comic artist would. But still, even if it's only a little progress at a time like with the kangaroo sequence, at least it gets me further to completion.
I just have to hope my last-minute rewrite of this intermission will pay off.

Posted a year agoIt's funny how a script in my head can stay the same for so long. And then once I sit down to draw it, I realize I should go back and review what I've already written about it... and lo and behold, I wrote something that contradicts my latest script.
The coward's way would be to change the past comic to fit the future. I've fallen for this on occasion. But... this isn't as critical as those other times. I can tweak this current page to fit the past. It does offer some new drawing and writing opportunities for me.

I'm back to drawing tonight, starting with page 1 of at least 7 "intermission" pages of AFCAH. I think it'll be pretty apparent why I'm doing "intermission" rather than "phase 2" pages once you see what they're about.
I'm a bit nervous, because I don't know quite how complex this is going to be. But you're all welcome to watch:

Anthro rat coloring and shading tonight
Posted a year agoI got halfway through coloring last night -- there was a lot of finessing with the sketching and inking last night, so I didn't get to finish the whole thing in one night. But at the current rate, I should finish the picture by 8 PM tonight. I might take this opportunity to experiment a bit with lighting techniques, with some edge lighting and texturing. If I somehow am satisfied with the picture well before 9 PM... I'll figure that when it happens.

Posted a year agoStill pushing for the last page of the kangaroo sequence. What will I do afterwards? Produce some more AFCAH pages, for sure. Maybe open some commission slots. Maybe it would be easier if I specifically open for single-figure pictures to be done in one evening, 5-figure sequences to be done in 4 nights, and so forth. Stuff like the werecroc sequence took multiple nights for both inking and shading, so it would probably be a custom commission. Hmmm... maybe I could have multiple Google Forms with different options for those specific commission slots...
I'll focus on that later. Time to color the last page. I'm sure it won't be as much of a spoiler for those who've seen the most recent page, but you're free to watch if you enjoy kangaroos or obscure prog/psych rock records.

Kangaroo #14 inking stream tonight
Posted a year agoI'd been hammering this point pretty often, but in case you missed it, the next two pages of the kangaroo are finished, while the last page needs to be worked on. So I'm finally finishing the kangaroo sequence tonight.
Some of you can probably figure out what will happen in the next 3 pages. Once I finish the inking of #14, I'll post page #12 (which could very well be tomorrow morning); once I finish the coloring of #14, I'll post page #13. Then I'll post #14 once it's finished.

Posted a year agoSo here's the plan: I am currently 1 watcher away from setting off this giveaway of mine, but I won't be picking a random winner until that number is passed.
The plan is, if I hit that milestone before the stream begins, I'll roll for the winner, message them, and finish up #10 of the kangaroo. If I hit 700 during the stream, I'll roll for a winner at the end.
But if I don't hit 700 then, then tomorrow I'll do a lion TF picture, rolling either at the beginning or end of the stream depending.
And if I still don't get 700 by then... well then I'll just have to keep posting kangaroo pictures until someone does.

Coloring #10 stream tonight - video essays suggestions?
Posted a year agoCurrently, one of the biggest problems I have with streaming is staying focused. Music isn't helping -- I'm too interested in learning the history of the bands and the songs. Video essays might be helpful here, if only I could find any. Anyone got any good suggestions on science or technology or gaming history?
I will be coloring the tenth kangaroo page tonight. For #9 I had a bunch of design issues to make (and got bogged down in places with all the handpaws to draw), but I have a pretty clear direction for this page.
I was going to draw a lion TF to go with a story jackthelizard is currently writing, but he's still working on it. So, I'll work on finishing up the kangaroo sequence. With any luck, it'll all be done in just five more nights!

Inking #10 stream tonight
Posted a year agoI'm not sure how to feel about #9. I've been working on it too long to be neutral about it. Somehow shading just took more and more time (and I was more and more unsure of what constitutes a finished page by the end), until I posted it just before the night had finished.
I'm also 4 watchers away from my giveaway. As I've said, when I do hit it, then the next stream I'll put in everyone who signed up, spin the wheel, and contact the winner to let them know. Then the next stream, I'll draw the picture, ideally in one go.
I think it's all this stress over job-searching and uncertainty about the future that's making it hard for me to focus on drawing. I hope everyone continues to be patient with me over my current speed.
