Furry Migration 2024 meme
Posted a year agoIn a bit over 24 hours, I'll be on my way!
This is going to be my first time at the con (and also my first time in Minneapolis, unless you count waiting for a connecting flight in 2015). Anyone I know gonna be there?
Since it's my first time, I'm giving myself an extra day to be a tourist, and might want to take my fursuit out for some photos if I can find a handler to help. Anyone I know also going to be there?
---
Where are you staying?
Hyatt, the main hotel
What day are you getting there?
Wednesday afternoon
How are you getting to the con?
Flying
Who will you be with?
Anyone, probably
Will you be fursuiting?
Count on that, at least
Will you be cosplaying/dressing up?
Probably not.
What is your gender?
Male
How old are you?
39
Can I talk to you?
Of course
Can I touch you?
If you ask first, and I accept.
Can I hug you?
Ask first; I'll probably say yes. No lifting or tight squeezes, please
Photographs?
*poses!* (Only in suit, please)
How can I find you?
Look for a toony yellow dog!
Where can I find you?
I have a few main events I plan to attend, plus the patron and supersponsor buffets. But beyond that it's not a huge space - we'll find each other.
What panels/events do you plan to attend?
Fursuit games, Walkies, opening & closing ceremonies, and probably some other main events.
Which suit(s) will you be bringing?
RK!
Are you taken? Are you looking for a mate?
Single, not looking.
Can I visit your room?
I don't expect to have anyone else up there.
Can I hug or snuggle with you?
Ask first :P
Can I take you for walkies?
Yes
Do you do suit swapping/loaning?
I'm open to trying, but it's been a long time since I did that.
Can I buy you food/drinks/Take you for dinner?
Well, I don't need any charity (so you don't have to pay for me), but if I'm hungry, I'm open to joining up.
Are you a good boy?
*wags*
How long are you going?
I'll be flying back Monday afternoon!
If I see you, how should I get your attention?
Come up and say hi. In front of me if I'm in suit so I can see you.
What’s your goal for the con this year?
Overall, just have fun.

Where to find me
Posted a year agoOkay, since I'm seeing a bunch of furs posting this after last night's awful news...
I'm not expecting this site to just disappear, despite all the worry going around. There will be others to take over.
That said, it's still important to exist on multiple sites. And remain active on them. So here's where you can also find me and/or my art:
My Home page: https://rkniner.ca/
Weasyl: https://www.weasyl.com/~rkniner
Mastodon/Fediverse: https://yiff.life/@rkniner (@rkniner@yiff.life)
Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/rkniner.ca (@rkniner.ca)
I am no longer using Twitter/X, since it's been largely overrun by neo-Nazis, is actively diverting it's advertising/paid account revenue towards anti-LGBT politicians, and has blocked the significantly better third party apps from its ecosystem for over a year. So if you follow me there, I would encourage you to follow me on Mastodon or Bluesky; I'm more active on the former, but will still post to both sites.

Wanna go for walkies? Join the Tour De Fur fursuit walk!
This should follow a similar route to last year, but I have removed the longest version (i.e. to HTO Park) because it left us too spread out.
Route info is up here.
Do you have a fursuit and want to join? Simply show up; there will be space.
Not a fursuiter? We will DEFINITELY need handlers; any extra helping paws will be appreciated. Willing to help go that extra mile? I'll have some walkie talkies and signs to help direct everyone along the route.
Meet at 12:30pm on Saturday in Frontenac, weather permitting. We will leave shortly after.

Look for a toony yellow dog!
Where can I find you?
Honestly, not sure. I'll probably be wandering around the con space a lot, when I'm not in panels that interest me.
What panels/events do you plan to attend?
I'll probably try to join the Fursuit Games on Friday (if I they take entrants at the door), and the parade and Fursuit Recess on Sunday. I also expect to attend the variety show, opening & closing ceremonies, and possibly some panels that interest me.
Which suit(s) will you be bringing?
RK!
Are you taken? Are you looking for a mate?
Single, not looking.
Can I visit your room?
It's a bit out of the way...
Can I hug or snuggle with you?
Ask first :P
Do you do suit swapping/loaning?
I'm open to trying, but it's been a long time since I did that.
Can I buy you food/drinks/Take you for dinner?
Well, I don't need any charity (so you don't have to pay for me), but if I'm hungry, I'm open to joining up.
Are you a good boy?
*wags*
How long are you going?
I'll be flying back Monday!
If I see you, how should I get your attention?
Come up and say hi. In front of me if I'm in suit so I can see you.
What’s your goal for the con this year?
Overall, just have fun.
Can I steal this meme from you?

Midwest Furfest Con Review
Posted 2 years agoFor the past couple of weeks since I visited Chicago for what is now the world's largest furry con (15.5K+ attendees), I've had some of my thoughts swirling about an event I had been skipping for over a decade, one that I finally got the approved time off for this year (although that's not likely to happen next year).
Usually, I have a blast at these cons despite their size. And while I had a great time overall, I think this is the first time my thoughts were a bit mixed up about how well it went.
So after a bit of break, I may as well try to put words down on my experiences.
A quick summary
I ran into a few things I took issue with, between the way the lottery worked (including some glitches that didn't show up until check-in), poor wayfinding and queue management, a lack of any attempts to protect attendees from airborne illnesses (funny, cons used to care about this), and a confusing, step-heavy layout.
But I was still able to have a fun time, and it looks like some of my gripes got fixes as the weekend progressed.
The room lottery and mysterious names
If you asked me back when MFF first announced that they were going this route, I would've said I'm not a fan; my opinion hasn't changed even after two more furry cons implemented their own games of chance.
My plan was to try to get a room Wed-Mon so I could spend time on Thursday exploring a city I'd never really been to (outside of a carpool to Schaumburg in 2007). But since the website said the hotels further away from the action had shuttles in place, I checked them off as options to increase my odds of getting in.
I guess the Wed night block was too small, because I got placed in the Comfort Suites with a Thursday arrival.
Once I had my reservation, I didn't think too much about it until check-in, but when I went to the front desk to pick up my key, I was surprised to find a second name on my reservation. Is this something that normally happens?
Wayfinding
When I arrived Thursday around noon, I went to the hotel to leisurely explore the con space in both the hotel and convention centre (or at least, the con space I had access to). If I'm being honest as first timer, that was probably a good idea.
1. The hotel's meeting room layout was hard to figure out.
2. The maps were confusing, with odd names for the 3 levels of the hotel.
3. Some of the wayfinding signage the con had already put up was outright wrong -- while I was in the skybridge, I found a sign pointing to registration, and it instead took me to the main parking garage.
I had to turn around, find a sign pointing to the dealers' den, and only after going down the escalator did I find the entrance to registration.
Queueing at registration pickup
Somewhat surprisingly at the time, the lineup was incredibly short when I arrived at registration. As I waited in line, it got longer and longer, eventually blocking the convention centre's entrance and looping back on itself. And still more furries came down the escalator to mingle in the lobby outside Hall A.
Eventually, at about 2:30, con staff announced they were going to start letting us into the hall to line up, and their was a mad dash as people who had just showed up and pushed their way through the mingling crowd to get closer to the door were able rush past those of us who had already formed an orderly line.
By the time we eventually got in, I was separated from those who were waiting ahead and behind me, and had 3x more attendees ahead of me than when I first joined the line.
While the system was much more orderly past this point, I'm surprised con staff did not either (a) enforce the line we had organically formed when letting people in, or (b) let them into the registration hall earlier (before it got crowded). Either way we would've had to wait until they were ready to start collecting our badges.
Masking and vaccines, or a lack thereof
While I fortunately managed to avoid catching covid or any other con crud on this trip, others weren't so lucky. Quite frankly, I'm surprised so many cons got rid of vaccine and masking requirements this year, especially this one that's (a) already super-busy, (b) running during the time of the year with the most contagious illnesses, © in a convention centre with absolutely atrocious ventilation, and (d) didn't seem to suffer from enforcing restrictions last year.
I could keep going, but this decision just feels like it was designed to pander to a very loud (and selfish) minority. Busy cons should really do better to protect their attendees.
Smaller gripes
* Honestly, in addition to its poor ventilation, the skybridge is too narrow and seems to have many unexplained elevation changes. I see why so many fursuiters make jokes at its expense now.
* When it gets really crowded, it's hard to clear the top of the Hyatt's escalators; too many furries seemed to stop and chat along the narrow walkway leading away from them, or were heading the other way. Perhaps during busy times, the con could force people to keep moving until they're off to the side, or enforce one-way traffic?
* The drop-off loop at the convention centre spent most of the weekend smelling like burning tobacco, and after spending a bit of time outside, my fursuit started to pick up that smell. After that I had to resort to waiting for my shuttle indoors
* * Similar to my gripe with Anthrocon's shuttles, it would've been better if each route had a designated pick-up/drop-off location instead of the free-for-all we got. I missed the shuttle twice because I couldn't see it past other vehicles stopping in the middle of the road.
* What is it with Chicago and half-width escalators? Looking at the L station, the convention centre, and the escalators leading to the Hyatt's lower (sorry, international) level
* You know, for a place that's called "The Windy City", I was expecting a lot more wind.
Things I actually liked
* Regardless of whatever con issues I may have had, it was nice meeting up with an reconnecting with friends. Even making some new acquaintances!
* After registration, queue management was handled a lot better
* Some of the confusing signs (not all of them) got some fixes as the weekend went on
* The schedule included the name of the building each room was in, so at least I didn't get confused about that
* I liked playing pinball in the arcade
* I didn't have to worry about breakfast, since that was included with my room
* Weather was warmer than I expected; I went the entire weekend without a coat
* Best headless lounge was the one in the convention centre. Less crowded and bigger
* Obviously it was pricey, but having multiple places in the con space to order food (in addition to nearby restaurants) is always a plus.

Since I probably won't be able to get the time off next year, I'm gonna try to make the most of it. To that extent, is there anyone else who'd be up to taking this doggo for walkies downtown early Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning? Weather permitting, of course...

Wanna go for walkies? Join the Tour De Fur fursuit walk!
With the crowd we drew last year, I'm making some tweaks and keeping the route along the waterfront. Ideally this will limit road crossings.
Meet at 3:00pm on Saturday in front of the convention centre, weather permitting. We will leave shortly after.

I'm open to trying, but we'd have to know each other pretty well. Also, we're still in a pandemic so it might still be a bad idea.

Go right ahead.

Furnal Equinox is 10 days away!

Wanna go for walkies? Join the Tour De Fur fursuit walk!
With the crowd we drew last year, I'm making some tweaks and keeping the route along the waterfront. Ideally this will limit road crossings.
Meet at 3:00pm on Saturday in front of the convention centre, weather permitting. We will leave shortly after.

Scotiacon recap
Posted 2 years agoI've been trying to figure out what to write about the week-long trip I got back from two nights ago. It was my first time in the UK (& second time across the Atlantic Ocean). Overall though, it was a fun time
My departure date was Wednesday; due to some laundry needs and building maintenance work, I got up early (3:30am EST) to get some laundry done before the water cutoff & finished off my packing. With my flight later that afternoon, I spend the rest of the morning relaxing, grabbed a poutine for lunch, and got a lift to the airport.
Check-in was incredibly smooth, as there was no lineup for the bag drop or security, so I wound up at my gate with hours to spare. It was a bit crowded due to the previous flight getting held back, so I opted to walk around the terminal building from one end to the other and back. With YYZ terminal 3's setup, each lap took about an hour. Eventually the previous flight left and I was able to board my flight to Scotiacon
The first leg of my flight was a transatlantic trip to Dublin on an Airbus A321neo, departing 5:40pm EST from YYZ & scheduled to land at DUB the next morning, 5:15am GMT. It left 20 minutes late, but arrived on time.
If I had one complaint about the flight, it was far too warm in the cabin and I was unable to sleep at all. Given how early I woke up, that sucked.
After passing through customs, I made my way to the next flight, a short hop to GLA scheduled for 6:40am. The gate led out to a bus that took us to the tiny plane, and I watched as my fursuit was the first item to get loaded on.
Due to a queue on the taxiways, the flight landed in Glasgow at 8:00am (20 minutes late). After riding another bus to arrivals, I was able to pick up my luggage and exit the airport. 7 pounds later, I was on a double-decker bus heading downtown. In rush hour traffic.
Arriving at my downtown stop I ran into another fur, and we got on the train to the SECC.
The train ride was uneventful and we arrived at the hotel around 10, way too early to check in. We chatted with a few other furs before I finally went across the bridge to my hotel to drop off my luggage, then went for a walk.
Downtown was kinda nice to walk around, and the weather was drier than when I landed. We grabbed a late lunch and I walked back along the river to check into my hotel. I don't recall much after that; I returned to the main hotel a bit that afternoon before I got tired, and returned to the Premier Inn to pass out in my bed around 7:00pm.
I woke up the next morning at 6:30am, showered and grabbed breakfast downstairs before walking back to the Crowne Plaza.
A bit before 9, I made my way into the registration queue to pick up my badge, and at 11 I returned to my hotel and got into fursuit.
With fursuits not allowed in the main hotel until noon, I hung out outside the main doors for that first hour.
I queued up for opening ceremonies in fursuit, and left for the outdoors once it was done, where I largely stayed for a few more hours handing out with other fursuiters in the cooler weather. Around 4pm, I joined up with two handlers and 2 other fursuiters, and we started walking back downtown. The walk lasted until sunset before we returned, and I kept going until 7pm before getting out of suit and showering. I met up with a friend, and we grabbed supper while watching that Puss In Boots sequel together, and then I got back in suit and returned to the convention for the Friday dances.
With how warm the hotel was, I soon returned outside, and eventually returned to my hotel around midnight.
I had a lighter breakfast on Saturday, and spent a few more hours fursuiting before the sponsor lunch, and decided to enjoy the convention out of fursuit that afternoon. That evening, I went to a live concert/dance, but a few minutes later I realized what I forgot...
I quickly left to get into my fursuit, and returned with 20 minutes to spare in the concert, so at least I got to enjoy some of it my fursuit before we emptied out. After some more fursuiting around the con space & outside, I returned to my hotel for the night.
Sunday morning, I got breakfast at the main hotel (apparently it was included with registration all along) and got in fursuit for the fursuit games, making sure to wear my fursuit paws instead of shoes so I wouldn't feel like I was cheating. I fursuited most of the day, getting supper in the hotel, switching outfits that evening for Casino Night, where I lasted right up to the final games of Blackjack before heading outside to cool off.
By this point, a drizzle had started, so I stayed mostly under cover, dancing to the music that someone else brought outside, but eventually I had to return to my hotel.
Turns out the sidewalks are slippery when wet.
With the previous night's weather, I left my fursuit paws to dry out and grabbed a second main hotel breakfast before suiting up one more day. I made it to closing ceremonies that afternoon, then showered and put the rest of my suit away before the dead dog party.
Yeah, I spent more time in fursuit than out of fursuit over the duration of the con, but with a morning flight I had to leave the dead dog dance early. I gave my final hugs, went to bed, and packed up before meeting up with a friend early the next morning.
The flights home were a lot more comfy, and I was able to catch up on missing hours of sleep before landing back in Toronto right before rush hour. Customs was slow and my luggage beat me to the carousel, but I got a lift home and arrived in time for supper.
Was it a good trip? I think so. The schedule was pretty light so I had to make my own fun for most of it & the weather was mostly cooperative.
Will I return to Scotiacon? Maybe in a future year.

Scotiacon meme (plus possible Puss In Boots 2 screening?)
Posted 2 years agoWait what? My Scotiacon trip starts in 7 days? Going to be my first time in UK.
---
Oh hey, who wants to catch a movie during the con weekend? I noticed that the UK is finally getting the second Puss In Boots film (The Last Wish) in cinemas next Friday, even though it's already been available here for over a month...
I have two ideas:
a) Wait until Friday and get a group going to see it in a nearby theatre (probably a matinée?)
b) Host a small group in my hotel room to watch it Thursday night.
Thoughts?

Random thought re: faves
Posted 3 years agoHypothetical thought: If FA were to change their code to either
(a) notify you about art that users you watch have faved, or
(b) added a new action to share art you like, which added it to the submissions of users watching you
...would that be a good feature to have? And which one would be better?

Furpoc meme
Posted 3 years agoIt's almost time for Furpoc; I'm heading off to NYC and Stamford CT in 6 days!
---
It's gonna be my first time at Furpocalypse, and my first time in the NYC area, so I'm giving myself an extra day and a half to explore the big apple; I plan to head down for a few hours Wednesday evening, and then return Thursday during the day; my plan is similar to what I did after arriving at Vancoufur in March.
So, uh, if anyone wants to join up, we could head down to Manhattan on Thursday before the con starts. If I can get a handler or two, I'd love to bring my fursuit as well (obviously not going to do that if it's just me). Any takers?

CanFURence meme
Posted 3 years agoWhoe's ready for CanFURence this weekend?
Heading off to Ottawa in 3 days!
---
I'm going to be running three excursions over the course of the weekend:
- A fursuit walk Thursday night @ 9pm, where we will be using the O-Train to reduce walking time and visit some sites on the eastern half of downtown
- A second fursuit walk Friday evening at 7:30pm near the hotel, route TBD (there's a nearby pedestrian mall and park). In the event of rain, this will be on Saturday at 8pm instead
- A railfur O-Train ride Sunday morning at 7:45am, where we will get on the O-Train and visit every station in the system, including a stop at Tremblay station to check out the intercity trains there
All these excusrions will be fursuit friendly, but we would also like handlers and photographers to help us on them. If you are attending and available, feel free to join!

A week at VancouFur
Posted 3 years agoWell, it's been a few days since I've returned, and I've finally caught up on work, going through my photos, and started to get ready for my next con.
While there were lulls, and I couldn't muster the energy to stay up past 10 pm, I managed to still have a blast on my first trip to BC.
Wednesday
My flight was scheduled for 8 am, so with the pandemic still being a thing and predictions of slow early morning transit I set my alarm for 4 am EST. Woke up 15 minutes early, so took a shower, shaved, and finished packing before heading to the airport.
There wasn't any lineup at security, so I got through before anything was open and with over an hour to burn before boarding. Once the restaurants opened, I had steak and eggs for breakfast before getting on my flight. By my count, I was one of at least 3 furs on the plane (although I wasn't truly sure of that count until much later). At about 8 am, the Boeing 777 pushed back to begin its flight...then pulled over and returned to the gate. Dues to mechanical issues, we wound up leaving an hour late, and waiting even longer at the carousel when we landed.
Around noon PST I finally got my luggage and made my way to the SkyTrain to start my journey to the hotel in Surrey. The trip was a bit easier when I joined up with eevachu for the ride, and once checking in, I grabbed lunch and made my way downtown to act like a tourist.
The weather was rainy, but after walking to Stanley Park it stopped and I got some late afternoon sun while walking along the seawall taking photos of the skyline. After night fell, I returned to the hotel and joined some other furs for supper. I stayed up chatting downstairs with other random furs before retiring to my room for the night.
Thursday
Ooh, first full day in Vancouver! I woke up early (about 4:30 am) and stayed in bed until a shower closer to 6 before grabbing breakfast and hanging out chatting in the lobby. My plan was to take my fursuit downtown for some photos, but this meant (a) waiting out the last bit of rain, and (b) finding a handler to take pics. Eventually I found another willing fur (also on their first trip to Vancouver, though from Edmonton instead of Toronto), and after stopping to get day passes, we rode the Expo Line back downtown.
On the way down, we passed through some rain, and my handler was worried the weather was going to suck. But it passed quickly, and by the time I suited up and exited by Canada Place the clouds were beginning to clear. After walking around the waterfront until we reached the olympic cauldron, we hopped on the bus to Stanley Park.
I picked up a few more photos, but my handler was having trouble keeping up, and with the time getting later we decided it would be a good idea to return to the hotel. Soon after arriving and returning my fursuit to the hotel room, I got in line for registration. It took a while, but eventually I got my badge, and returned back to the room to drop it off before lining up again for opening ceremonies.
By the time I got into the ceremonies, I was starving - I skipped lunch to make time for fursuiting. Fortunately, I ran into cybertoxinn, so after sitting through the ceremonies we both went out for sushi. I didn't do much else that evening before going to bed at 10.
Friday
Honestly, Friday was a bit of a blur. I spent a chunk of the morning fursuiting, played board games in the afternoon (even joining a Munchkin tournament), and managed to both sleep in and stay up later in preparation for what I planned to be an even busier Saturday.
Saturday
After spending most of the morning taking photos of fursuiters, I got into suit and passed by the inflatables panel for a bit, before hanging out in headless until the parade gathering. The parade took a while to get started, and the gathering room was warm, so once group photos wrapped up I went upstairs to take a shower. By the time I returned downstairs the elevators had a lineup of fursuiters looking to do the same, so I helped out by calling elevators and managing the line to get them up faster.
I didn't suit the rest of the day, but got some more photos before supper, and eventually went to bed early and tired. Yep, missed the dances.
Sunday
I spent Sunday in and out of suit, between the fursuit games in the morning and dead dog in the evening. But with a noon flight the next day, I evenually called it a night and packed up.
---
All in all, it was nice to get back to a furry con. With the amount of time I spent chatting in the lobby, I was also able to make some new friends, even if I wasn't fursuiting as much as I would've liked.
Would I go back? Maybe, if airfares were still as cheap as they were this March. Though it might be hard to take time off work for both VancouFur and FE in the future.

VancouFur meme
Posted 3 years agoOh hey, in less than a week I'm going to be on the other side of the continent for VancouFur. First time there (both the con and the city).
Honestly not sure how it's going to go; I don't know as many people on the west coast as I do at home, so I expect I'm going to have to make new friends over the weekend. I also set aside some time to explore the city before the con starts; I'd love to take RK out for a day if I can find some handlers and a day with good, dry weather.

Possible 2022 con plans
Posted 4 years agoAt this point, I'm already a lock for Furnal Equinox, and plan to sign up for CanFURence when registration opens.
But after getting a reminder about unused vacation days (pandemics make them build up), I'm looking at a few options during the first half of the year (by date order):
ANE (Feb 17-20)
I've been to Boston for this con twice before, most recently in 2019, so I know how to get to the hotel and have been in that area before. It's not exactly local, but I know at least some of the attendees.
Unfortunately, I would probably have to figure out a room share to attend, and unless things improve significantly (or I spend less than 72 hours stateside), get tested before returning home.
Vancoufur (Mar 3-6)
I checked on a whim, and flight prices are half what I usually see! I've also never been to Vancouver, so if I added an extra day I could spend it exploring what would be a brand new city to me.
Admittedly, though, I don't know as many west coast furries, and haven't heard from any that plan to go, so I'm not sure if I'd know anyone there ahead of time (or if I'd just spend the weekend effectively being on my own).
FWA (May 5-8)
Never went, but it seems to be a popular con. Don't have much else to go on here, but it was mentioned on Twitter when I was asking there last week.
BLFC (Jun 2-5)
Never went here either. I know it's a very popular con and it's been recommended to me before, but it's also the most expensive option to travel to.
Anthrocon (Jun 30-Jul 3)
Like with ANE, I've been to Pittsburgh for this con twice. But somehow, not since getting my fursuit. By being later in the year, I'd hope the pandemic will have wound down and the rules changed so I could return home without doing one of those nose-swab tests by then. I would still have to find carpool and possibly hotel room space.
---
Does anyone here have recommendations on which ones to attend? Are you going to one or more of the above cons?

CanFURence 2021
Posted 4 years agoFigured I could bump that journal from the beginning of this pandemic off my user page. This past weekend, I flew to Ottawa for a downtown furry con with an attendance cap of 500 (imposed before the province started lifting restrictions to allow for larger events). What followed was a weekend that, to be honest, I kinda needed: fun, friends & fursuits.
Thursday
With the first of my vacation days, and travel plans later in the afternoon, I finished packing and had a breakfast poutine from a local restaurant, before heading down to the airport. After checking in and dropping off my fursuit case, I lined up for security, and an hour later I was at my departure gate. The flight was pretty short (30 minutes in the air), and after grabbing my luggage I went out to catch the bus.
Only problem? The bus had just pulled away as I stepped outside. Not in a position to chase it down and not wanting to wait another 30 minutes, I quickly made alternate travel arrangements and arrived at the hotel half an hour later. Check in was uneventful, and I went to the elevators to head to my sixth floor room. Two of the elevators were down, and with staff and volunteers moving a lot of equipment with the remainder, it took a while to get up. Once I returned back down, I volunteered to help before picking up my badge that evening.
I joined up with
sparky_d and grabbed supper at a nearby pub that was offering half-price wings before returning and getting into fursuit to welcome other early arrivals to the hotel. Eventually, however, the heat got the better of me and I went up to my room to de-suit, check the schedule and look up the weekend's weather.
Unfortunately, my planned Saturday walk was at risk of not happening due to rain, but there was no consensus between forecasts, so I added them to my phone to continue monitoring and went to bed.
Friday
Waking up early, I decided to hit the pool once it opened, before showering and heading to Tim's for breakfast, sitting with some friends to chat as we waited for the convention to officially start. Some furs passed by to ask where registration was, so they could line up for one of the few remaining slots the con was offering. By the time reg had openned, both sides of the hallway were filled up.
I got together a group and managed to get a few games of Growl in before suiting up to head to opening ceremonies. Once the ceremony had ended, attendees began to line up for the Artisans' Alcove (CanFURence's term for the dealers' den), but with the lineup quickly coming to a halt as the room hit capacity, I went to run around other areas and didn't come back until much later.
After the morning rain let up, I got out of suit and met up with
forresttboar to walk around downtown and find somewhere to eat. Once we returned to the hotel, I realized it was getting drier outside, and with Saturday's walk still in jeopardy, I tweeted out asking if anyone was interested in a night walk. Getting some interest and discussing with friends and staff, I made plans for 6:30 that evening (to give people time to get ready) and collected my con shirt, before heading upstairs to get back in fursuit.
It was around this time that the convention hit its capacity limit, and the two remaining elevators became a significant bottleneck for travel. While the lower three levels of con space were all accessible via the hotel's main staircase, it took a while to travel to and from the guest rooms. I budgeted extra time to head down for a break before the evening walk, but by the time I was ready to go the elevators had become an issue.
Another attendee staying on the sixth floor was at the elevators, and revealed she had been waiting for half an hour, so a bunch of us quickly gave up and went to the north exit stairs. We eventually found a route to the mezzanine, and from there could use the main stairs to the lobby, where I joined everyone waiting to walk downtown. Most of the participants were waiting in the cooler weather outside, so after waiting for stragglers and directing them through the revolving doors, I joined and started the walk.
Being two hours after sunset, it was already dark by the time we started, but fortunately I already knew where to go from the earlier walk, and we had fun visiting the well-lit sections of the Sparks St pedestrian mall, getting fursuiters plenty of photo opportunities (as a group and individuals) with the army of photographers that came along. Halfway through the walk, I tripped on a bench and took a fall, but was able to continue. After 90 minutes running around, we returned and got out of suit to grab supper.
I spent the rest of the evening in the games room, playing more Growl, before eventually heading upstairs for the night.
Saturday
Morning routine had me take another swim, before I decided to grab breakfast from the hotel restaurant, and check the forecast for the last time. After discussing with programming, we decided to cancel the afternoon walk and replace it with a short parade in the con space, and I went to tweet it out and hang with friends before suiting up. As the morning continued we began to learn that the hotel had organized some responses to the previous day's elevator issues: They had ordered some of the parts for the elevator to get lifted up to the roof that day, and opened up the service elevators for guests, effectively doubling their capacity.
The parade took a bit of time to start, but after 15 minutes we were already done, and I decided to visit Uranium's inflatables panel in the penthouse. After a few pics with the pooltoys, I took a look outside and saw the rain had stopped and the ground was starting to dry. With some encouragement from others, I organized another 6:30 walk.
This time around, the group had changed, and we were able to follow the previous night's route that much faster. Getting to the corner of Sparks St and Metcalfe, I looked at the time and decided we could visit one more location: parliament hill. I wasn't expecting the PPS to let us, but were allowed right up into the plaza in front of the peace tower to take photos around the flame in front. With the extra stop, we still returned to the hotel in 85 minutes.
I de-suited and met up with a few friends to head out for supper at a Japanese restaurant on Bank St. I spent the rest of the evening visiting the games room and dances.
Sunday
Swim, shower, hotel breakfast. I looked outside and saw it was sunny, with the weather holding until sunset. Would anyone be interested in a day walk? After some interest, I started to organize the third walk of the convention (fourth if you counted the parade on Saturday) We had a smaller group, but with better lighting and more people around we were able to do everything faster, and even return to the original route I had planned for Saturday's walk. This time, when we got to parliament hill, we took a group photo with the backdrop of the centre block and peace tower, before heading back.
A few attendees began to leave, and by sunset the lobby felt empty. I began making dinner plans with the goal of eating after closing ceremonies, and soon after I was having pizza in my room with
forresttboar, RudyShepherd8 and FloofyJack. After we wrapped up, I got back in suit one last time and went down to the dead dog, to socialize and dance to exhaustion.
Monday
I finished packing up, and went down to the lobby to grab breakfast at Tim's. With one last meal with other attendees, I hung out a bit in the lobby, before grabbing all my luggage, heading back down, saying a few more goodbyes, and heading home. This time, I took the LRT and bus to get to the airport, and breezed through security, leaving me with tons of free time. The plane left late, and it took a long time to get my luggage at the other end, but I made it in time for the express bus home.
Wrap up
Seriously, the weekend was a blast, if a bit of a blur in spots. While the elevators were an issue early on, they seemed to clear up more and more as the weekend continued, and as the inside temps dropped to make fursuiting that much more comfortable. And thanks to the 2+ years since I had seen most of the attendees, everyone was extra friendly.
While it would've been nice to not have to worry about the rain for my event/panel, the alternatives I was able to come up with in conjunction with programming made up for that by quadrupling the amount I had, and gave me ideas for future cons. Even if my feet were sore by the end of the last walk, and even though I was feeling the effects of that first fall all weekend.
Since we were still in a pandemic, masks and double vaccinations were mandatory, and the hotel enforced the latter rule before we could even pick up our badges or get keycards to access the pool.
The event space featured a 3-storey atrium where the con managed to turn the middle story into its "zoo", with plenty of light and lighting that allowed for fun nighttime shots. In to this space, some of the rooms had an additional foyer area that was treated as con space (subject to badge checks).
CanFURence 2022 will return the final week of July, to the same hotel. By then, I expect to have a new fursuit ton show off.. I can't wait to go back!

CANCELLED - #Furnal2020 alternate plans
Posted 5 years agoEDIT: Cancelled
Welp, last night COVID-19 got my home con cancelled. A bit upset, but with some certainty, I was able to pull out of my hotel reservations and donate my membership to support the con through the tough decision and its likely fallout.
That said, after some discussion with other locals, the Tour De Fur is still a go!
We're moving our rendezvous point to the hotel lobby, and our meeting time to 2pm, but if you're already in the area, feel free to join us in our stubbornness as we head outside anyways.
Seeya there!

#Furnal2020 meme + Tour De Fur reminder
Posted 5 years agoGuess what?

Furnal Equinox is 11 days away!
March 20-22 at the Westin Harbour Castle in Toronto.
---
Don't forget the annual Tour De Fur fursuit walk!
After last year's schedule change tripled the attendance at this event, I decided not make too many changes this year. The TDF is officially a Saturday event, and still visiting the waterfront, CN Tower area and the square better known as "Jurassic Park".
Looking for the route? Here you go!
Meet at 2:30pm on Saturday in Metro West (or stay around after the fursuit fandango). We will leave shortly after.
---
