The Doctor has left the building.
Posted 3 weeks agoNono, he's not dead.
But last night's Dr. Demento Show was the last ever.
The good doctor counted down the top 40 most requested songs of all time.
Godspeed, Dr. D. Enjoy your retirement.

An art question
Posted 4 weeks agoArtists that post pictures in low resolution: Why do you do that?
There's an artist I follow who posts pics that can be displayed, in full, on my 35+ year old antique computer.
That makes them very small on a modern computer - or even a modern phone - and much less nice to look at.
Why? I could understand it if you sold prints, but the artists I know who do this don't sell prints.
And I don't mean sketchy doodles that were done small to begin with, these are full-page real-media color pieces.
I don't get it.

Snow Leopard?
Posted a month agoAnyone know where I can find a Snow Leopard disc image that will work on a mid-2020 Mac mini?
Nope still not enough.
Posted 2 months agoSomeday they'll add enough 'only on Modern' things to get me to use that abortion of a UI.
But nope, not yet.
Also, the PDF viewer is apparently in JavaScript instead of using the browser's PDF rendering. That's kinda messed up.

Sorry, whoever that was.
Posted 2 months agoI mangled my first post of my most recent upload, so I deleted and re-uploaded it, but I didn't realize someone had commented on it already. (Seriously, it was up for less than a minute.)
I didn't see the comment, so whoever you were: Sorry!

maikeru has passed away.
I learned from a post on her Discord by her partner who said she passed away in the hospital of heart and kidney failure.
Per the announcement 'as far as we can tell, she wasn't aware she was slipping away, so she went peacefully.'
This is such a shock. I've known Sofia for decades. She was always a great friend as well as a great artist.

Dear artists: WHY?!
Posted 4 months agoWHY do you not tag your uploads? Do you WANT your art to be hard to discover?
There are a bunch of artists I've watched - and commissioned - because I found them with a search.
When keywords weren't required, I figured it was just laziness. Didn't want to be bothered. But now I'm seeing people post art with keywording that is basically a snide comment on being required to keyword.
And no other keywords.
The hell?

Posted 9 months agoI really wish I could replace Android's Google TTS engine with Dragon. Even the version of Dragon I used back in '02 was better than this.

Posted 9 months agoIs there an opposite of systemd-inhibit ?
I need to -prevent- a program from inhibiting power control.

Posted 10 months agoCouldn't do it. Back to the Classic layout I go.
Well.
Posted 10 months agoLet's see if tag blocking is enough to get me to use the "modern" layout.
I'm trying it but man, this is so godsawful.

On AI 'poisoning'.
Posted 10 months agoPlease do not use Glaze to 'protect' your art from AI training use. For two reasons.
1) It looks like shit.
2) It doesn't actually work.
To be clear, Glaze can work against older models of generative AI training but isn't effective against newer ones. And most of the AI trainers are no longer using data scraped from public internet anyway, they're paying for known-clean data sets.
Nightshade can work, but you have to be able to generate huge numbers of images to seed into the data set. So if you're Warner Brothers trying to poison Bugs Bunny out of an AI's tool set, that's do-able, but if you're an artist who only has a couple hundred images total?
Nightshade also provides no protection against targeted LORAs; if someone wants to train a model specifically on your stuff, and I've seen that done if an artist is popular enough, neither Glaze nor Nightshade will prevent it.
So please don't make your art look like poo to actual humans.

Kinda pointless, but fun
Posted 10 months agoI got one of those "Atari VCS" consoles for $80, bought some RAM and an SSD and stuffed it in there, and now it dual boots AtariOS/stock and, effectively, as a Steam Deck.
It's not really the Deck's OS, but it boots right into Steam and has the same UI as the Deck.
Not a fast machine but it's fine for the RPGs I wanted it for.
And it's woodgrain.

Unwanted feature hiding?
Posted 12 months agoDoes anyone know a way to remove 'Notes' and 'Game Recording' from the menu on the Steam Deck?
I'm never going to use them, Game Recording is disabled, and selecting it actually says 'this is disabled'. The Notes are way too easy to hit accidentally and then the UI defaults to Notes when the menu's opened and I have to reboot the deck into Desktop Mode to delete them because deleting notes from Game Mode will never delete the last note even if it's empty.
That menu's kinda cramped, and having less stuff on it would be helpful.

I enjoy a good argument.
Posted a year agoI do! Really.
Not just yelling back and forth, but engaging with someone whose position is different from mine, actually discussing the issue, trying to make points understood, trying to understand where they're coming from.
Unfortunately, almost all arguments online devolve into shouting matches. I could really go for a good argument, too. My rhetoric skills could use brushing up.
So, anyone want to argue about something? Bonus points if you find logical fallacies I'm using.
(Not politics. Holy crap, not politics. I'd rather argue emacs vs vi than politics, and emacs vs vi probably counts as religion.)

Posted a year agoMy nephew's death was more likely accident than suicide or foul play. He was hanged from a Halloween decoration he was working on in the garage.
