This is mosty to push the last journal down and make my page easier for me to navigate. I haven't had a lot of free time available recently, though the story thought-processes continue. I did have an interesting inspiration the other day. It's not a huge spoiler, but when  marian gets to town, she eventually spends part of her time as a "working girl." The interesting idea is that, along with several other abilities she's acquired, she has a fairly flexible shapeshifting skill, with some significant limitations. She can change her size, shape, and physical details, as long as she remains bovine and female - but she has no real ideas of her own WHAT to do. So, I might eventually solicit "one night fantasies" or something where not only would Marian service someone, they could actually suggest the form she took while doing so. Sure, it's a cheap crutch to leech off someone else's creativity, but I think it could still be fun. Of course, I have to GET her to town first, and that's taking forever. -:)

Nothing earth-shaking going on in my world, but slow progress is continuing on "Lunar Passage." With a little luck I'll be done with the first draft (over 22k words so far!) and can at least post that in scraps. It's technically a chapter for Marain's Road, but I'll be posting it as a stand-alone MLP fanfic.

In other story news, I've moved the Marian's Road graphics to Google/Picasa, which should make future linkage a little easier for me (I was linking to a localhost web server, which is a real pain). The way I produce the PDFs requires actual web links instead of filesystem links for the imaged to embed properly. Annoying, but the software is FREE, and does everything else correctly (which the paid version of Adobe Acrobat did NOT do).

Based on comments from the awesome  markstr, I've updated my profile (for the first time in years) to dis-associate myself from some of the groups I'd had linked. Of course, he mentioned this like two months ago, but I always take forever to get around to stuff. I also cleaned up some of the text there and added some other relevant info.

I have to say that 45 feels pretty much like 44. All the same aches and pains. On the day itself, Opal and I went out to lunch at the local (and very cool) hot dog place. They even gave me a free brownie, which I was not expecting. After that we went to a matinee of Brave at the local "cheap" theater, for $7.50 a seat! Holy mackerel! I shudder to think what a seat at the pricey theater would run.

The movie was very good, as expected, and Opal definitely wants a copy of the film, and the soundtrack, and the toys...

I was impressed by everything but some of the horse movements. They seemed to work harder on the bears than the horses (which makes sense, I suppose), and there were a few times Angus really looked weird (to me at least). In the less active scenes, though, he was totally awesome (beautiful model, with some animation issues). I heartily recommend the flick, and rate it up there with Lilo for a "make sure your daughters see this" movie.

Loopy on pain pills, had to have my other upper molar (#15 for the dentists out there) removed today. That was a HUGE SNAGGLY TOOTH!

So I spent the morning and part of the afternoon half-asleep on narcotics with an ice pack on the side of my face. While I was doing that, I worked on some of the side-projects for Lunar Passage, my nearly-all-first-drafted MLP-FIM fanfic/Marian's Road crossover story (15k words and counting). I even wrote a verse to my "Traveler's Song" that doesn't sound too bad. I'm slowly creeping closer to having this ready to post, though that'll be a draft; the finished piece is a bit farther out.

Poking into the quiet of no-update-land, I am making progress on Lunar Passage, my MLP:FIM fanfic chapter for Marian's Road. I went back and totally re-wrote the beginning, and I think it works a LOT better now. If progress continues on the pace it has for the last couple of days, I hope to have a distributable draft up by next week sometime. Of course, RL has a nasty habit of throwing obstacles in the way of my free time, so we'll see.

Greetings to both of my readers!

As many other folks, I've enjoyed the new incarnation of My Little Pony greatly. It's really refreshing to see US-made serial animation with a decent script and production values. UNLIKE most other "bronies" though, I've always been a fan, all the way back to the beginning of the franchise - which caused me no little hell when I was younger.

One of the fun things about my "Road" story is that the setting allows me free rein to "borrow" characters from other sources. The project I'm working on currently is a chapter featuring Luna from MLP:FIM. Preparatory to this, I've been watching both the full run of FIM, and every single other movie and MLP episode I can find online. I expect to finish the last of the G3.5 material tonight. Yes, a lot of it is beyond bad into horrible, but it's pretty presumptuous to write about something without properly researching it first. One final little project will be to watch the original MLP pilot and FIM premiere and compare the two to try and see what other Easter Eggs the team left in there.

I've been making notes for weeks about the chapter I'm working on for Luna, and in the process have sorted out and organized the overall story timeline significantly. With a little luck I'll get to the actual writing part in the next few days. Luna as represented in the story will be post-Harmony, and as true as I can make her to what little canon we know about the character. Like any good character, she will change through the course of the tale, but not in ways that I think will conflict with her established personality and history. And no, there won't be any "shipping" in this story, sorry folks. She may be technically ancient, but I don't feel she's emotionally mature enough for that. I'll keep such activities to my own characters, at least as far as I can see at the moment.

On the good side, though, she'll end up being pretty damned badass, in a good way - but I won't spoil the surprise here. I hope to return her to Equestria better than when she left. I'll probably write a small prologue so that the story can be taken and read out-of-context and still make sense. Beyond general background, everything should be pretty self-contained and wrap up neatly at the end.

So that's what I've been working on. Watch  marian for updates in the next couple of weeks, and as always, I really appreciate feedback, good or bad.

It's not particularly exciting, but as part of my ongoing attempt to improve the look and consistency of my writing, I've been edumacating myself. While I have access to and familiarity with (a lot more than that in some cases) various word-processing software, I'm trying to think long-term and avoid (where possible) file-formats that may become obsolete. Hence, my ongoing effort to convert the native format of my scribblings to something that, in all likelihood, will be around for a good while, as well as being distribution-friendly: HTML. Unfortunately, HTML, with good reason, doesn't readily lend itself to publishing formatting. Add CSS, however, and you quickly get a LOT closer to the goal.

So, I've spent this week (in my copious spare time) reading up on CSS, and have created my basic style sheet, applied that to my two "in-progress" works, and confirmed that it does what I want it to do. While it's still a bit of a nuisance to have to convert to PDF to get them up HERE, having them natively in correctly-formatted HTML will make it much easier to update my main story page (once the stories are in a "finished" state of course). HTLM also will allow me to include links to useful internet resources, which will be important a little farther down the Road.

In the short term, there's no update coming until at least some time next week, but once I finish proofing the hard-copy of "Marian's Road" that I'm carrying around and get those changes keyed in, I'll get the cleaned-up version posted. There will probably be a little new content included, but nothing major (yet). Once I've gone over the existing text and fixed it up a bit, I'll probably change gears again and work on a couple of other pending projects before I get back to working on the Road in a major way. I also need to get the "Journeying" rewrite done soon, now that I've got all the technical issues out of the way.

I've been diddling with the less-glamorous aspects of the story, tweaking the formatting and font, trying to get a better print version. I needed that so I could proofread the beast.

So, today, while I cooled my heels for a few hours at Opal's doll meeting, I made it all the way through the front matter, the entirety of Marian's origin, and into the second "road" chapter. Surprisingly, I didn't find all that much to hack out of the first bit. It really holds together pretty well after all these years. I definitely need to get the transitional chapter written soon, or the later parts won't "work" with the start. There will be some continuity challenges regardless, but I think I can hack it together. With a little luck I can get the primary proof finished and uploaded this week. Then I need to move on to some old business that's waited far too long already.
