Thank you to all those who voted, including those who voted for the other fine, fine entries in the magazine category. Continue to look at them, continue to look at us. Together we will try to bring you the best of what Furry Fandom and furry media have to offer. And remember: If you like what we do, Tip Generously! FC 2015 Meme
Posted 11 years agoI'll join in with the social crowd and give my answers for Further Confusion this year...

We're staying down the road aways at a place where Sy gets really cheap rates from his Hilton points :)
Arrival/Departure
Showing up mid-afternoon Friday, leaving mid-morning Monday. It's better to drive in daylight.
Means of transportation
Sy's big van!

Sy Sable *hug*, Changa Lion, Aronel
Who do you hang out with?
I'm not really anti-social, but I tend to wind up by myself at cons a lot simply because my ADD kicks in and I start wandering randomly.
Gender
Decidedly male
Preference
Attraction? Decidedly dead-center bi
Relationship Status
Part of a tight 4-way as described above. Yes, seriously.
How old are you?
Just turned 50, ya young whipper-snapper!
How tall are you?
6-foot even
Are you an Artist?
No. I draw cartoons. I WISH I was an artist.
Do you have an artist table?
No
Do you take commissions?
Willing, but people loose patience with how slow I draw
Do you do trades?
See above
Are you a Fursuiter?
No. Could never dream of affording one right now
Attending parties?
I wander by to see if they're worthwhile
Do you drink?
Tea-totaller from WAY back
Can I buy you a drink?
Iced tea please :)
Do you smoke?
Never
Are you attending any panels?
I always attend some, and even speak on a few now and then. I've been at this a while.
Stage or public performance?
If I could get a group together to perform music I would SO be there!
How do I identify my self to you?
Whatever way is comfortable to you. FA or Facebook names work.
Rules of engagement (physical contact)?
I'm a hugging fanatic, but I prefer gentle over glomping. If I grunt, forgive me -- I've had cramped muscle troubles lately. It's not you, it's me.
How can I find you?
I'll be checking my Facebook from time to time. As I said above I tend to wander randomly so I can be hard to find -- I may not even know where I am myself!
Can I talk to you?
Definitely. I like to meet people because being at a con surrounded by strangers feels... lonely.
Can I give you lots of money?
Tip me at InFurNation.com. Appreciated!
Can I give you stuff?
We have an awful lotta stuff already in our household!
Can I hug or snuggle with you?
Yes. Forgive me if I purr.
Can I come to dinner with you?
I have no problem at all, but you'll need to ask the other three if they're comfy with it.
Can I hang out with you?
If you don't mind my random wanderings and indecisiveness.
Can I take your picture?
I don't mind at all, but apparently it's against some kind of rule -- cuz no one ever takes my picture!
How do I know if you're not looking to socialize (angry, busy or upset)?
I will walk away and not speak. Don't follow me. I need to settle my nerves.
Personality Type?
I'm a calm sort until I get into Geeky, and then suddenly I will not shut up. Tell me to stop if it bugs you. I place a great deal of emphasis on politeness and even niceness -- I was raised in Canada ^^
What's your goal for the con this year?
To reach the end of it not feeling too lonely or too broke!

Belts
Posted 11 years agoI may be projecting, but I honestly think that everyone has certain things they're turned on by that they have no idea WHY. But they know it's so. For me, among them is: Belts.
For some reason, anthro characters wearing naught but a belt (and maybe a sword scabbard or a carry-pouch at the hip) I find just the bees' knees. A belt, or a belly-chain, or something around the middle that's the sole bit of "clothing". I have no idea why.
If you know of some good pics along the line of what I'm talking about, post a link below.

CaliFur Art Show
Posted 11 years agoJust over a month now 'til CaliFur.10 in Southern California. If you're interested in taking part in our Art Show / Silent Auction (and you SHOULD be!) but you can't make it to CaliFur yourself, get in touch with me -- We'll see about setting up to take care of mail-in art for you.
Furry Art Show in Santa Ana
Posted 11 years agoHey, furry artists! We're doing it again. In April the Avant Garden Art Gallery (located in the historic Santora Building in the Artist Colony district) of Santa Ana is letting us host The Art of Furry Fandom, just like last June. We're taking up an entire wall from Sunday, March 30th through Sunday, April 27th. And we want to show YOUR art! We're talking framed originals (or VERY short-run prints) in a gallery setting, for sale! First Saturday of the month (in this case, April 5th) is one of the best-attended Art Walks in Southern California. What's it take to be a part of this? A maximum of $40 (per artist, not per piece), which goes down if we get more than 5 artists involved. Each artist gets roughly 9 square feet of space to fill. We can't assure you of sales (who could??) but we CAN assure you that your works will be seen by dozens of eager art fans over the month -- so make sure to include some of your business cards! Interested? We want the world to see your stuff! Send me a message and I'll chat you up about more details. And spread the word!

2013
Posted 12 years agoHappy New Year for 2014, everyone. In the true spirit of ADD, here are my snapshot memories and impressions of 2013...
Another Further Confusion, and another year of wandering around a great big furry convention feeling... lonely. Yup. All these people all around me having such a great time, and so much to check out, but no one is really hanging with me and I'm not really pal-ing around with anyone. No one there knows me from Adam, it feels like.
At the Winter NAMM Show in Anaheim I got to introduce Jean Larrivee to one of our Songsalive! Showcase performers, who was there playing a Larrivee guitar. Took a picture of them together. One of those "only at NAMM" moments.
Speaking of Larrivee guitars... Commander Chris Hadfield of the ISS is one of the greatest science cheerleaders of recent memory. Sorry, Bill Nye.
Valentines Day. I came closer than I have ever come to literally losing my mind in a fury of self-righteous rage. I'm still trying to work THAT one out. I've grown very, very tired of drama queens... and the one I am MOST tired of is me.
Later in February the Songsalive! OC Songwriter Showcase celebrated 4 years running. That was a lot better.
I maintain that WonderCon Anaheim is 90% of the things that are cool about San Diego Comic Con, minus 90% of the things that make SDCC a pain.
CaliFur. I think we did about the best job of any furry con last year in terms of decorating for our theme. Yes, I'm biased. ^^
Sy and I added a new title to our resumes: Curator. When we put together a display of various furry artists at the Avant Garden gallery in Santa Ana for a month. It has long been one of our goals to convince people that furry art is a bigger part of furry fandom than fur-suits. We'll be doing that again.
San Diego Comic Con was another blur of activity, even with Sy and I having been quietly kicked off the CaliFur table organizing team for reasons we're still not sure about. We made things work about as well as could be hoped.
My 30th high school reunion was a major disappointment. I only knew a very small handful of people there. Most of the Performing Arts department, who were "my peeps" even back then, didn't show up.
The D23 Expo keeps getting bigger and bigger, and more complicated to navigate. Already making plans for 2015! Sy got involved with this ridiculously complicated sort of "scavenger hunt" and "mystery game" that was all built around the Expo, Disneyland, and Walt Disney Studios. It was the most amazing piece of work that I've seen in a long long time. Huzzah to the architects of it.
The Long Beach Comic Con continues to grow toward being an honest-to-goodness "contender".
And there you are. That's what comes to mind most about 2013. Well, those things, and all the folks I met at Sam Ash Music -- especially through our weekly Open Mic Night, which has grown to legendary status. And more people coming to our Songsalive! events as well. Always gratifying.
2014 is already looking... Very Interesting, to say the least. Stay Tuned!

OC Gallery is Looking for Art
Posted 12 years agoThe Avant Garden in Santa Ana (CA) is actively looking for artists to put up pieces for sale and display. That's the gallery where back in June we held the "Art of Furry Fandom" display. If (IF!) I recall right, their rates are only $20 per foot (wide) of 6-foot tall gallery space. Check 'em out! They get one heck of a lot of visitors views during the 1st Saturday Santa Ana Art Walk each month.

San Diego Comic Con
Posted 12 years agoI'll admit I don't often write con journals, mostly cuz I don't trust myself to make my memories into something you'd be interested in reading. San Diego Comic Con was, by and large, a Great Big Blur this year, as it often is. I spent most of my time running around the convention, pushing CaliFur and InFurNation.com fliers into the paws of everyone I could. I get a lot more word out that way than sitting at the CaliFur table and waiting for people to come to me, I think. Might as well, since Sy and I got the CaliFur table yanked out from under us this year. I won't go into that headache here though.
A couple of actual memories stick with me though. Much of it is MLP:FIM related. Sy and I managed to get into the official My Little Pony fan event this time, which was awesome. All we had to do was get into line at 8:00 am for a 10:00 am event. [Once again, Comic Con put the event in a room less than half the size of what it needed to be for this crowd. Get with the program, people! I DO Programming! I can say that!] I also spent much of my free time (ha ha) running around the con and getting most of my IDW MLP:FIM comics signed by at least one of the artists or writers.
One thing that I found very neat: I wandered by the IDW table, and seated there showing off his new hardcover book collection was none other than Berke Breathed, creator of "Bloom County" and "Outland". Interestingly enough, he had no big line to see him -- I must have caught him at either the front end or tail end of his appearance. So I got a chance to chat it up with him for a few minutes uninterrupted. Awesome!

Owie
Posted 12 years agoSoooo... two days before the PS party (or four days after CaliFur, however you figger) I went in to the hospital to get my two hernials sewn back into place. So now here I sit (mostly here I lie) around the Prancing Skiltaire, severely doped up and moving very, very slowly. My dreams have been... interesting. That's one mother of a narcotic pain killer they've got me on. At this point, the pain has mostly gone away... so long as I sit, lie, or stand very still. The instant I try to move from one of those positions to another... owie.

Furry Art Show in SoCal in June. We Need Art!
Posted 12 years agoExpanding on my earlier journal, I now have some more specific information about the Anthropomorphic Art Show I've been trying to arrange during CaliFur this year. It looks as if it might very well be a GO, taking place in Santa Ana (CA) throughout the month of June. Now we need some good quality furry art to fill up the space! Remember, this is 'arty art', so we need to have your best stuff!
Here's how it's likely to work: The gallery we've been speaking to is terribly reasonable with their wall-prices. We have about 120 square feet of space to fill. They fill up the space on the last Sunday of each month (we'd be looking at May 26th), and the art remains on display for one month total (in this case until June 30th). So we'd be going up right before CaliFur, on display through CaliFur (including the monthly Santa Ana Art Walk on June 1st, which is a HUGE event every month), and up for a full month after that! And yes, the idea is to SELL the art, not just display it.
The way I figure, the wall fee could work like this: If we get 8 artists, up to 2 pieces each (we don't want to over-crowd the wall), it would be $30 per artist (total, for the month!), plus the gallery's 25% commission on any sales. If we only had 6 artists represented, it'd be $40 each, but we could have more or larger pieces from each artist.
So, what do people think? Does this sound like a go? I'd love the opportunity to get some real anthro art up in front of an artsy crowd for a whole month for a reasonable price. Let's show 'em what we can do!
[And yes, I'm planning on accepting mail-in art!]

Further Confusion Meme -- Finally!
Posted 12 years agoHere we go again! Finally getting around to talking about it... I'll be there every year that they do NOT have FC on top of the NAMM Show.
Hotel
The Hilton
Arrival/Departure
Friday (January 18th), afternoon, to Monday (January 21st)
Rooming with
My Life Mate Sy Sable (http://www.furaffinity.net/user/sysable), plus Changa, and Seriyane.
Gender
Male
How old are you?
48
How tall are you?
6-foot even
Are you an Artist?
I refused to grace my childish doodles with the term 'art'. I use furry cons as an excuse to force myself to practice more.
Do you have an artist table?
Nope. See above.
Who do you hang out with?
I tend to spend a lot of time alone, when I'm not with the PS crew. Sort of a leftover habit from my childhood I guess.
Are you a Fursuiter?
Nope. Never could afford one.
Attending parties?
Going to parties at FC is pointless unless you like to drink yourself stupid. I don't.
Do you drink?
Only tea.
Can I buy you a drink?
Tea? ^^
How do I identify myself to you?
"Hey Rodney! I know you from... [fill in the blank] "
Rules of engagement (physical contact)?
Don't glomp me, especially from behind. But I adore hugs when offered nicely.
Can I talk to you?
Yes please! Forgive me if my attention wanders. Give to fight ADD today!
Can I give you lots of money?
Contribute it to an animal welfare organization instead. Just put it in my name ^^
Can I hug or snuggle with you?
Same as 'Rules of Engagement'. I'm easy-going this way.
How do I know if you're not looking to socialize (angry, busy or upset)?
If I'm in motion from Point A to Point B, it's probably best not to stop me unless you have to.
Personality Type?
Nerdy as all get-out... just in a mature, 48-year-old man kinda way. Don't know much about games (never got into 'em, even when I was much younger), but I'll geek with people about animated movies and TV series all day any day!

Only tea.

Opportunity for Furry Artists -- Gallery Show
Posted 13 years agoLately I've been visiting the Santa Ana Art Walk at the downtown artist colony, which takes place on the 1st Saturday each month here in Southern California. To make a long story short, I've been chatting it up with some of the gallery owners and event organizers there. There's a good chance I might be able to organize a Furry Art Gallery Show, similar to the run that ran concurrently with Further Confusion up in San Jose last year. And yes, I would try to arrange to run it concurrent with CaliFur, or right before, or right after.
This would be a non-auction selling art show, for originals and high-quality prints. Basically we pay for the wall space. How we do that has yet to be determined -- a lot depends on exactly which gallery we wind up in. The point is that right now, I'm looking for artists who might be willing to put their works up and sell them. You needn't be from around here, though obviously if you are it makes things a whole lot easier. Please help me spread the word about this -- I hope it can be a great opportunity to get some quality furry art out in front of art fans who aren't the usual Furry crowd.

New Guardians Meme
Posted 13 years ago[Please, copy this and help me spread the word about it! I'd love to have the idea spread!]
As I stated before I'm a big fan of the movie "Rise of the Guardians" and the books behind it. To me, two of the really coolest ideas regarding the Guardians are:
1) The idea of a "center". Each Guardian has an aspect of childhood magic that their whole existence is based around. The "center" of Tooth, Bunnymund, Sandy, and North are Joy, Hope. Dreams, and Wonder, respectively. [For those who haven't seen the movie yet, I won't discuss Jack Frost's center -- but it's important!]
2) Each Guardian was, originally, an ordinary human being. Yes. They did something in their lifetime to convince the Man in the Moon to turn them into Guardians of Childhood.
So fine. Here's my idea: Who else could be a Guardian? What other aspects of childhood magic, iconic characters of storytelling, could make the cut? What's their center? What's their origin? What are they now? Here's my idea for starters...
Old Man River -- 400 years ago he was, indeed, an elderly gentleman whose mill was located next to a river. One day, he saved a young child from drowning in that very river -- but in the process, had a heart attack and drowned himself. Now, he is a creature of water. His upper half is shaped vaguely like an anthropomorphic otter... his lower half is, well, water! What's his center? LEARNING. Over the centuries an amazing number of things that humans have learned to do, from milling grain to sailing boats to building bridges to connecting civilizations -- all have had to do with running water. Old Man River is literally the spirit of progress. And he can, of course, instantly appear anywhere on the planet that water is in motion. [Oh, and being an old Celt, he usually refers to the Moon as "the Goddess" and not "Man in the Moon" ^^ ]

The Annie Awards Nominations
Posted 13 years ago[Re-Posted from www.infurnation.com:]
ASIFA Hollywood (part of the International Animated Film Society) announced the nominations for the 2012 Annie Awards this morning. These are the Oscars for animation, folks: Chosen and awarded by members of the animation industry, from writers and artists to animators and directors. As usual, there are a great selection of furry-oriented works among the nominees. This year the nominees for Best Animated Feature include Brave, Frankenweenie, Hotel Transylvania, ParaNorman, Rise of the Guardians, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, The Rabbi’s Cat, and Wreck-It Ralph. Interestingly, two of the “furriest” films of 2012, Madagascar 3 and Ice Age 4, were not nominated for Best Feature — though they were both nominated in other categories. Wreck-It Ralph seems to be the film to beat this year — though both it and Brave were nominated for 10 awards each, Brave was not nominated for Best Directing while Wreck-It Ralph was. For the television categories, furry-notable shows receiving multiple nominations included Adventure Time, Dragons: Riders of Berk, Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness, The Penguins of Madagascar, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, T.U.F.F. Puppy, and Doc McStuffins. Once again, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic was absent from all categories. What is up with that? Anyway, the Annie Awards will be presented in a gala presentation at UCLA’s Royce Hall on February 2nd of next year.

Guardians, Assemble!
Posted 13 years agoDreamworks' "Rise of the Guardians" is a WONDERFUL film. Yes, Bunnymund is every bit as nummy as we hoped he would be, but there are many other little pleasures throughout it, especially if you're watching closely. I found it interesting that the film-makers shied away from many of the Christian "aspects" of the Christmas and Easter stories, but seemed to dive right in to the pagan aspects of them with both feet -- especially Easter. That was cool.
Furry Hall of Fame
Posted 13 years agoHeading to or already AT Rainfurrest? On Saturday the Anthropomorphic Literature and Arts Association -- the folks behind the Ursa Major Awards -- are presenting the first 3 inductees to the brand new Anthropomorphic Hall of Fame for famous furry people, works, characters and more. This is going to be an annual event, so make sure and check out the very first one!
Dragons: Riders of Berk
Posted 13 years agoSo my family and I sat down together to watch the 2-episode premier of the new Dreamworks TV series on Cartoon Network, Dragons: Riders of Berk (http://www.infurnation.com/?p=2552). Can you believe they actually made Toothless even SEXIER?
Goodbye, Patches
Posted 13 years agoOur household lost a member tonight...
Patches, the feral cat who adopted us more than five years ago, was suffering mightily. The other guys took her to a pet hospital, where they were informed that she was suffering from almost complete renal failure. They were informed that an expensive operation could be performed, but it would only extend her life for a short time, and not very well. In the end, she was gently put to sleep.
We will miss her. Blessed be.

Try Again George
Posted 14 years agoAs it continues to fall on its face at the box office, I felt that I have to make some sort of comment about Happy Feet 2, simply because I was such a fan of the original Happy Feet.
What really strikes me about Happy Feet 2 is how much it reminds me of another sequel that George Miller directed, Babe: Pig in the City. Like that film, this new film is a visual tour-de-force. No doubt about it: After both Happy Feet movies and The Owls of Ga'Hoole, I can definitely say that Animal Logic are your go-to source for Texture Porn. But having said that, just like the second Babe movie, this new dancing penguin opus has a story line (if you can call it that) that's all over the map, so it winds up being really hard to recommend it. Watch it, but maybe wait for DVD so you can watch it with the sound turned down.

Don't Sell Toys
Posted 14 years agoAs some may have surmised by my whiny comments on various forums here and there, I was rather upset to see that the nominations for the 2011 Annie Awards (from ASIFA) came out -- and there was not a single nomination in any category for My Little Pony -- Friendship is Magic. After a little more reflection, it occurred to me that there were also no nominations for the re-boot of Thundercats. Then Sy Sable pointed out that there may well be a connection between these two shows and what the animation Illuminati, er, intelligentsia don't like about them: They're both ostensibly designed to sell toys. They're not 'creator driven', to use that term that CartoonBrew.com loves to throw around. As an employee at Sam Ash Music, I'm rather familiar with the phenomenon... When various cool-people publications do their annual 'Best Local Music Store', they refuse to look at anything but Mom-and-Pop shops... that is, refuse to consider our store. Why? Well, because, being part of a corporation (even a family owned and operated one) we can't POSSIBLY care more about quality than we care about making a fast buck. I truly love people sometimes...
