Go see Scott Pilgrim vs. the World!
Posted 15 years agoI've seen it twice so far. I guess I'm one of the uber-fans that really want to support the film and really wish it was doing better at the box office! I love the video game world physics of the comic along with how all the characters play off each other. It really is a faithful adaptation to the story, leaving just a bunch of fun extras for you to read for yourself later on.
Also, I bought both soundtracks. The original music along with the great garage band feel of the headlining songs really set the mood for the whole thing and really make it feel epic.
It's funny and whipcrack smart, romantic and rated almost as high as Inception on Rotten Tomatoes.
Why aren't more people seeing this awesome movie??! I want to fight for it!

Completed comic for Condition Furry
Posted 15 years agoI completed an 8 page Roxikat comic book story for Condition Furry that I am looking forward to sharing with you guys when I get back home. It's cute all shrunken down in pamphlet ashcan style format.
The first comic I've made in a long time and I'm really proud of the work.
Or, if you're going to Condition Furry, you'll get your own copy! :)

I love Diversity: I am a Furry
Posted 15 years agoAt a room party, I asked some of my friends to all put their forearms side by side so we could arrange a chiaroscuro of darkest to lightest. I was amazed I wasn't on one end of the spectrum. We were all friends so I didn't think I was doing anything racist. I loved that we all had different skin colors. I love it when everyone looks different! I think it goes perfectly with the furry fandom because all of our characters look different. When I did that stunt at FA, I felt like I was a part of something really cool, even though I was bringing attention to our different skin colors.
I don't think we're different species like our characters though. Part of me thinks it'd be really cool if we were though, only in the furry sense. Every type of furry character can mix with every other one, making hybrid characters that are even cooler than their parents. Every individual human can mix with every other human too (although the furry-cool word 'hybrid' would be racist).
Sometimes I think being a white guy is the most boring thing I could be. But being Anglo-Saxon doesn't mean "no color", it's just as much a color as any other color. I'm half-Irish, but I'm completely Irish on St. Patrick's Day. I'm a quarter French, even though I enjoy the heck out of a croissant. I exaggerate a nerdy "white guy dance" on the dance floor sometimes because I think it looks hilarious. My hair color is different than yours; chestnut brown with a little touch of grey. My eye color is different than yours; blue with an inner ring of hazel. I am a white guy and as ethnically diverse as everyone else in furry!
It might be incredibly racist of me, but I really like to hang out with artists that are a different race than me because I like how different they look from me. It's the closest I can get to the feeling of a lynx hanging out with a tiger, or a seagull hanging out with a flamingo. Embracing diversity and loving our superficial differences might make me racist, but it also makes me furry.

Finally drawing again
Posted 15 years agoWith my tenant moving out, I finally finished setting up the empty room as a studio away from my video games. I'm working on my take-homes from Anthrocon finally. Sorry to keep you waiting for two weeks. Last year, I kept Blazger waiting for far too long, so I don't want to repeat that.
The last few days I've spent helping friends paint their entire house, tearing out old carpets, and driving myself mad pulling out thousands of carpet staples.
Today I put up a second set of drapes in my room to blot out the lights of the neighborhood so I can sleep better and have my brain right for being productive.

AC 2010 was great!
Posted 15 years agoThank you to everyone for commissioning me at AC!
I was only taking four sketchbooks a day and I wound up filling up in the first hour each day. I wound up with three take-homes on the last day when I didn't want to take anymore books.
I apologize for the slowness of my drawing. The greatest help this year was my FULL UP / BUSY sign. I had to turn a lot of people away and I still was only in the artist alley, not the dealer room where people could more easily plan to find me by viewing the dealer room map online.
This was as productive as I could possibly be. I only fursuited during the parade, went and got my picture taken, and then was done with the costume for the weekend. This was also the first Anthrocon in ten years without a Roxikat fursuit appearance.
Since I spend between 1-3 hours on a sketch, I really REALLY need to start cutting corners or I can't do this in a professional way. That, and unless I bring merchandise to sell, I still don't break even on costs.
Many thanks to the artists who lended an ear and made me feel relevant.
Many thanks to the commissioners who supported my prices.
Many thanks to the fursuiters for capturing my imagination again.
Many thanks to the friends who made me feel welcome and a part of a community.

AC INFO - Roxikat
Posted 15 years agoArrival time: Thursday, 3-5pm. Leaving Monday around noon. Kamber's driving!
Staying at: A Westin suite with
kamber
leandragreen
shalkaii
dantethebunny and I think that's it.
Activities planned: Artist Alley, homework in Zoo, meals, and Fursuit Parade. Somehow going to bed early. I'm not allowed to take money outside the Artist Alley. I wanted to work out in the mornings, but it'd be impossible to do that and get in for the Artist Alley signups.
Commission rates: http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/1486552/
Fursuits in tow: Just Hossifer. I want to rebuild Roxikat before next AC.
When best to be social with me: In the Zoo, in the alley if I don't have a BUSY sign on my table, definitely when I'm fursuiting.
Contact: My gmail is roxikat at gmail dot com, which I get instantly on my phone.
Message me if you have any other questions or if you *need* to get into text or phone contact with me at the con. I can also access FA from my phone too. I might miss things being busy at the biggest furry convention in the world for a weekend, so these things can happen.

My rates in AC 2010 Artist Alley
Posted 15 years agoMy current rate is:
$20 close-up character sketch (head down to the waist)
$25 full body
+$10 addition character
+$10 for inks
Two characters in close-up, as a sketch, would be $30. For the image inked, it would be $40.
Two characters, full body from head to toe would be $35. Inked, it would be $45.
I will be taking books when the dealer room opens and not before, no matter how nicely you ask. Three or four a day tops. Friday and Saturday mostly. By Sunday, I'm usually way behind on Saturday's books (or even Friday's).
Artist Alley hours: if I get through the 8am lottery and get a table, I will be there from:
Friday: Noon to 6pm
Saturday: 10am to Noon (if possible), 4pm to 6pm. (The break is to go turn in my receipt book and go suit up for the parade)
Sunday: 10am to 4pm.
I will have a sign up on my table that reads FULL UP or OPEN so you don't need to ask. I'll have a sign that reads BUSY if I'm unable to chat at my table. Thank you for your consideration in this regard. I don't want to have to hide in my hotel room again to work on books. Anthrocon is the most stressful weekend I have all year. I apologize ahead of time if I'm curt.
CONTACT:
I will have a temporary phone for the con. I will ask for your celphone number so that I can text you when your commission is done. You'd be amazed at how much stress this relieves. Anthrocon is far too big for me to be able to track people down on foot.
TAKE HOMES:
On Sunday, I may offer take-home commissions. These will NOT be in sketchbooks. I refuse to take other peoples' sketchbooks home with me. Please keep in mind that I won't START on take-homes until August (because of the work I need to do for Condition Furry in London, Ontario) In the past, commissioners waited months for me to finish their take home commissions. (I'm so distracted at home. That's why you don't often seen uploads from me.) Please keep this in mind ahead of time. I will also add a $5 flat-rate charge for shipping and handling.
I'm not employed, so I may take a ton of take-homes to help pay the bills.
Thanks for reading!

Male vs. Female artists?
Posted 15 years agoTaken from
solidasp journal.
1. Does it matter to anyone whether an artist is Male or Female
It doesn't matter to me what an artist's gender is. Male or female, if I feel they're much better than me, I'm tremendously shy around them because I feel like I don't have common ground to approach them with, or I don't feel worthy to talk to them as an equal. I've met and spoken with celebrities and not had this problem, because I feel I'm so far removed from them that I can easily talk to them as a polite stranger who doesn't want to be worshipped.
2. If you find out the sex of an artist is different from what you previously thought
does it change how perceive that artists work and how you treat them?
Hmm, I feel shocked if someone winds up being different than my pre-conceived notions. For years, I've been trying to work past issues I've had with an ex-girlfriend that caused me to shrink away from most women. In the last five years, my friends have helped me past that fear.
I met wfa with you in New York before I'd seen her work, so I didn't have any notions ahead of time. But I'm always shocked by how her artwork does not have any of the elements that I'd previously considered to appear in most women artists' styles. I'm amazed at her talent, but yes, I'm also left very confused. I find wfa to be an amazing mystery. I've left it at that. Whenever I meet a charming talented woman who is in a relationship with someone else, I hold back from socializing too much for fear of seeming like I'm hitting on them.
3. do different gender artists get treated differently from each other?
I think they very much do get treated differently. I can make piles of assumptions about someone of either gender that can make a body of work that attracts a certain group of people and likes a particular aesthetic of art. I have always drawn mixed-gender artwork, mostly catering to males, yet my name in the fandom is female (although a mixed gendered character). A lot of my work is about gender dysphoria and confusion. I say it doesn't MATTER what gender an artist is, but I tend to be more polite and reserved when it comes to asking for adult work from a female artist. I have been very happy with adult artwork that I've gotten as gifts from female artists, but I do feel very awkward and shy about asking for it.
4. Can you accurately tell a persons gender by the style and content they draw?
I sure thought I did! I thought that female artists tended to be much better and more patient at drawing patterns and designs like Celtic knotwork and complex paisley like costume patterns. I thought that men commonly rushed to finish a piece and had less patience for colorwork, concentrating more on hard angles and tight anatomical studies. I believed that women were more about the journey and men were more about the goal. That's what I thought with no education or training. Through my untrained eyes, my very first assumption on seeing an artist's work that goes outside of these rules, is that they do not have a mindset common to their gender. That, or that they're gay or bi. It is an incredibly unfair assumption. My fear-filled logic brain has always set up stereotypes and assumptions to try to keep me away from actually going out and finding the truth about people on my own.
5. As an artist do you specifically hide your gender? Why ?
I regret having a female name in the fandom because I feel that it goes against my gender-role-reversal art theme. I draw Roxikat with thick eyebrows and muscles (and male parts) but have her look and act generally female because I like contradiction. But I feel that in choosing an artist name with a gender it causes people to make judgements about me before they meet me.
I feel that gender exists but no one is fully one or the other in their minds. People can't really change themselves biologically to a degree that can satisfy them in today's world. In fantasy, I think a good mix can be attained. In one way, it could be a way to achieve male and female without the fear of reaching out for companionship. In another way, it could be a celebration of men and women together in a single character.

Roxikat gift art update

An awesome superfit and tall Roxi with Aurora! I love Superbabsy's work and enthusiasm. The artist is from Mexico, so I wish I could remember all the Spanish I learned in high school. I was in the Spanish Honor Society *gleam*, but I wound up forgetting most of it so I could learn Japanese (which I mostly forgot too.)
I update that old journal entry when I don't get the chance to upload the artist's work to my FA account. (Again, I felt guilty that I was getting so many faves from work I didn't do.) A lot of talented and generous artists have given me free art over the years.
If the artist didn't post the gift art on their page, it's not linked on the journal entry.

FCN Rocked the '80s!
Posted 15 years agoFrom the stylish '80s outfits of
tiltlongtail to the near constant '80s tunes pouring out of boom-boxes, Furry Connection North 2010 was a great con with 880 attendees. Up in the Novi, Michigan Sheraton, it's in walking distance of plenty of inexpensive places to eat, so I never felt stranded there.
I happily roomed with
kamber and spent almost every night in Kings drinking games with the great guys that will be inviting us up to their first year London, Ontario Canada furry con in August http://www.conditionfurry.ca/
The hotel's fitness center was small, but I managed to work around the superfit
jdpuppy in the morning before the parade. I really felt proud of my progress and it was cool to have a workout buddy for a few minutes.
Speaking of that Fursuit Parade, I trucked Hossifer down the lane with cousin Kamber, waving to people happily. The parade route culminated in a huge mass in the parking lot grooving around a real DeLorean. I hopped out and danced a little, loving the atmosphere.
The last day was the Fursuit Games where I excitedly charged in and wound up being invited to lead the room in some stretching exercises. Wow, I felt really proud! The games were all over the place, despite
fordshepherd 's hilarious commentary. I followed JD Puppy to the back of the room and tried to entertain the audience that couldn't really see what was going on. It was great to interact with adorable
reimeerkat and the sassy
lilchiwolf Thanks for helping Hossie feel cute. :)
The weekend rocked! Check out Kamber's con report too, since we pretty much hung around together all weekend. :) http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/1334651/

lilchiwolf Thanks for helping Hossie feel cute. :)The weekend rocked! Check out Kamber's con report too, since we pretty much hung around together all weekend. :) http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/1334651/

haliFursuited at a local Bowling furmeet!
Posted 15 years agoI had a great time fursuiting at last night's Furry Bowling Meet last night hosted by
squeetis . The location was local and convenient for me to get to, and it probably had upwards of 25 attendees with seven fursuiters!! It's definitely a lot more fun to wear Hossifer when other suiters are around. :) This was the same location that Vitani/Clementine ran, even though she didn't know this one was taking place.
I put on the Hossifer muscle padding and fursuit, leaving the feet at home because I'd have to wear bowling shoes on the lane. I put on a oversized raincoat over the suit and walked in to scope the location out first. Luckily, it was full of local furries! Lots of folks that I didn't meet before. In fact, people drove in from New York and New Jersey to be a part of it. I didn't mind that I bowled so badly.
I hurriedly changed in a stall in the men's room, accidentally cracking the plastic mesh strap that supported the head to the back of my head, so the eyeholes wound up a good three inches too far forward and I was mostly disoriented and blind for most of the night. I posed for lots of pictures from furries and kids, but I couldn't see well enough to be really social. Some yarn and hot glue should be able to repair the damage in time for my trip to FWA Thursday.
I got to hang out with some talented suiters like Vin, NJ's hilarious CooperTom, dancing competition star V, Gibbs (aka
baccala30 and some other suiters I didn't know. The blue lighting and black lights lit up my Hotch badge but only certain white parts of my suit. The loud hip-hop music only added to my disorientation. Zero, Cray, LeoStarr, Zephyr, LupineFox, SkippyFox, Jak, Volt, Rudo, Leb, Tsuneko and other furs I can't remember. But it was a nice crowd! I played two games and the event lasted from 9-11:30pm.
Thank you Squeetis/ Barrett Bunny for hosting the event and I hope I can make the next one!

FA: United 2010 May 28-31
Posted 15 years agoJust letting you guys know that I'll be hopping in the car come May 28th, and drive a whole hour to get to the FA:United furry convention in Mt. Laurel, NJ!
Since it's only an hour away, I can actually sweep the dust off my ol' Roxikat costume and bring her and Hossifer to the con.
Check it out at http://faunited.org/
If you're going to this con:
1) Will you want to commission me for a $20 single character sketch?
More planning and seeing how much time I'll have for fursuit events.

Elliott's Spring Gathering 2010!
Posted 15 years agoHere ye, Here ye, furry citizens throughout the Metro Florida area,
I'm going to be flying down to this year's Ellott's Spring Gathering to frolic among you awesome Florida furs again! I'm happily bringing my Hossifer ponydog / jacklhoss costume, a backpack full of pencils for arts, and a decent pair of swimming trunks to prepare for the fun weekend of May 21st to the 23rd at the Radisson Resort Worldgate in Kissimmee, FL!
Why do I think this weekend is so awesome? It's because of the free events! The go-kart trip to FunSpot and the Wet'n'Wild water park trip are all free! Also, the hotel is able to be reserved at a special price of only $60 a night with the group!
Also, some of my favorite furry artists will be there and it's the best time of the year to get some commissions for my sketchbooks, as the artists don't get as swamped as they do at huge conventions!
Last year, it was a great surprise that they got the cast of Avenue Q to perform just for us. In fact, I think special guests have always been a surprise for the attendees. I was glad I didn't miss out last year. I wonder what is planned this time. :)
You can register and find all the information you need at their website: https://ele.furryhost.com/
I'm going to be rooming with my pal
terrymouse for the weekend. I hope to see more of you guys there!

Posted 15 years ago1) Will you be at FWA?
2) Would you like a $20 single character sketch from me in the artist alley at the con?
I'm trying to check to see how much demand there'd be for art from me, so I can plan out how much Hossifer fursuiting I can do.
Also, on Friday, there's a fried chicken place open from 11-3pm that I'd need transportation to get to, as it's 3.4 miles away from the hotel. I wanted to go with some friends of mine, but they'll be stuck in the dealer's den during that time.
Would anyone with a car want to have lunch with me on Friday from 11-3pm?
