Hey all!

I kinna wanted to update my journal... and this is something I thought would be worthy of mention.

So, I've been playing Megaman 10 on and off alot lately (especially yesterday and today). I'd recently gotten into the Time Trials - speed runs of levels in MM10 attempted with 1 life, 0 healing items and all your weapons available.

After doing each run, I would look at the world rankings... and one time, I noticed one that irked me - I noticed a section of it that I knew I could personally do faster than the world record.

So yesterday and a bit of today, I decided to work towards breaking that world record. Unfortunately for me, I couldn't and the world record was beaten in the way I was planning on...

...but my efforts did not go in vain...

I currently hold the #8th place world rank for speed run for Solar Man's stage (well... on the Playstation Network anyways).

Still, it's a pretty big accomplishment for me. The good news is that after studying the 1st place record again, I know I can improve a bit more! I won't be able to be #1 (because that run is absolutely perfect), but I can probably get into the top 5 if I try.

Anyways, that's it all. Maybe something else another time =3

Alright... been a while since I did one of these... and to anyone interested (and reads this), here's another review, this time for the new DS title, Phantasy Star Zero

So, if you are aware, Phantasy Star Zero is another in the expanding Phantasy Star Online-style titles done by Sega. Turning their once awesome RPG series into the first ever console-made MMORPG was a brilliant move for Sega and made the series a huge cult hit. There have been re-makes for the XBox, PC and Gamecube and sequels... *cough*

Yeah, okay... most of the sequels to Phantasy Star Online (Phantasy Star Portable for the PSP and Phantasy Star Universe for the XBox) didn't live up to their predecessor. Does Phantasy Star Zero for the Nintendo DS?

To be honest, not quite... but it's the closest we've seen thus far at least =3

Graphicly speaking, wow. For the DS, this is impressive graphics. It's a bit lower-res and sometimes flatter than PSO, but considering that it's a portable console, this is still really good. The graphics feel a bit more childish in graphical style as well... kind of Kingdom Hearts-esque if you want to compare, but that still works well for this series.

One great thing that is back is the character customization options. Right off the bat, you choose your race, gender, class... then from the template choose hair/hat style, hair colour, armour colour, skin colour and even voice (which we can touch on later). Additionally, all the weapons in the game look different from each other (well most do), so whatever you equip, you see. I will say that unfortunately, the options were a bit better in PSO than PSZ (at least more variety in options), but it's pretty much similar to what it was before. I will add though that there are anime cut-scenes dotted throughout the game (as well as the game intro), but you'll mostly be seeing text-dialogue very similar in style to Disgaea (not saying the writing is the same as Disgaea's... nobody can be that funny =p)

Audio... well... this is the major drawback. The music is a bit tame and the sound effects are a bit... old... as in SNES-era quality. That's not really too bad, but I think if they cut back on the anime cut-scenes, we could have had better sound effects. They do their job well enough though I suppose (and the level-up sound effect is kinna cuter now).

Of course, as usual, gameplay is the big thing... and they did a great job of making PSO for the DS. There are a few improvements to the system, including an evasive roll, something PSO didn't have. In PSO, you had to basicly take the hit and hope your Evasion was high enough that you'd block. This time, Evasion means the hit may miss you, but you can outright roll to dodge it if you don't want to take the risk. You also go into a straight run in this game and don't slow down if enemies are near. This is good for movement (though it looks a bit wonky going into a run from a standing position). You can also strafe by holding the L trigger down, which can be handy for ranged classes.

For the good, there is always bad and in this case, it's really a matter of the DS's limitations. The Gamecube (since this is Nintendo and I played PSO on my 'cube anyways), you had the ability to go into your menu while moving, using the C-stick to swap through weapons and so-on. There was even a quick-menu that let you do quick commands and even do on-the-fly weapon changes. Not in PSZ, unfortunately... since there's no second d-pad (and they use the touch pad for other things). One other thing that can be an issue is the difficulty of bosses. If you're fighting a full-scale boss, you will likely die in 1p and your NPC allies will more than likely die before you (and often). The stages are somewhat easy, but the bosses can be hellish sometimes. I find, however, that once you've killed them, it's easier the next time around.

Now, for multiplayer. PSO and all it's other iterations can go online for multiplayer... can the DS? Yes it can. I have heard that the online works very well, much better than Phantasy Star Portable on the PSP in fact! I have not gone online yet, but I have played wireless co-op and that is impressively good on it's own. The system for multiplayer is very intuitive. Any player can play with any other player and never feel weak. EXP is shared, handicaps are blended into gameplay to make things appear normal and best of all, when you get money and items, everyone gets their own set on their own screen rather than everybody fighting for the drops.

Multiplayer is also where the touch screen is used the most. Players use the touch screen essentially like Picto-chat. Draw/write your message and everyone sees it... well... on wireless multiplayer anyways. Anyone playing online that wants to see what you're saying must be on your friends list... yep... that means you need your friend code (when will Nintendo learn? XD).

All in all, the game retains much of what made PSO great and fans should enjoy it. Everyone else will probably get a kick out of this one too. Phantasy Star Zero is kind of like "Phantasy Star Online light"... but since it's a portable game based on a non-portable console version, PSO light makes perfect sense.

Personal rating: 8.5/10 - Definitely worthwhile. Consider getting it!

I've improved alot artwise and met people who I will always keep in my heart (they know who they are).

Alrighty, let's do another review... this time something a little older, but still really good - Mega Man 9.

First off, lemme just say it... I am a HUGE Mega Man fan! I have played all of them and done some crazy-ass stuff in the games. I really love the classic series as well as the Legends, X, Zero and ZX series. With that said, let's get into this.

Graphically-speaking, it's 8-bit Megaman circa NES era... did they have to do it like this? No. Is it awesome that they did? HELL YEAH! The retro feeling of this entire game is a real nod to the fans (something Capcom ALWAYS does well).

Audio-wise? Also a retro feel, which is still sweet and gives you the nostalgic feelings of playing back in the 80s and 90s... but the music is awesome as it is! I'd love to find some OST arranges or remixes somewhere.

Now, the gameplay... I'll say it first and it's the same thing everyone's said thus far... GOOD GOD IS THIS GAME HARD! Some people claim it's because we gamers have gotten soft? Nope... it's because the level designers and the boss AI/weapon programmers are evil incarnate! The first time I played the demo at a friend's house (I have the full version, relax), I died jumping over a platform, because an enemy popped out at the last second. Thinking back, it's been very rare in the series that has happened... and it's commonly done in Wily stages or late in the level... not in the FIRST area! They throw in truely devious things in many stages as well... and if you're about to tackle the final areas after beating the 8 robot masters, you better stock up on E-tanks... it's gonna be a wild ride (and if you don't beat the final areas in one sitting, you WILL have to start from the first stage... meanies...)

Still, you can get over the steep learning curve and beat the game... and even as frusterating as the journey is, it's still a treat to all the Mega Man fans out there. I think I speak for everyone who backs the Blue Bomber when I say "Bring out a sequel, Capcom... ASAP!"

Oh, and a new Legends game... c'mon, guys!

Hey all!

I don't normally do this, but I've seen the odd person do game reviews... and since I have some spare time at the moment, I thought I'd do one.

This, of course, is a review of the PS3 current top-seller inFamous. I began playing it a few days ago and I've gotta say, I'm impressed.

Originally, I watched a friend of mine play it through most of the 1st of 3 islands available in the game for about... 2-3 hours before I'd ever been able to put my hands on it. I got to play for a short burst during that time and in that time, before ever buying it, I was pretty hooked. Now that I've been able to play through a large majority of the game's story, I gotta say it's fan-freakin'-tastic!

Lemme give you the basic premise to the game:
You play as Cole McGrath - a courier who just so happened to deliver the worst package imaginable to a location (a bomb). After the package exploded (levelling 6 city blocks), Cole was suprised to see that not only did he survive the blast, but he gained an odd affinity to control electricity. He can fire it off and do other cool abilities as things progress that he has to figure out. The entire city that this takes place in is quarantined after the blast due to a mysterious plague beginning to form just after the explosion. Now Cole has to live in crime-infested streets and try to understand just what all lead up to the incident and fight not only the rampant gangs, but the citizens who believe him to be a terrorist and the cause of the blast.

Don't worry... the story blurb I mentioned is pretty spoiler-free... much of it is on the back of the box and is explained pretty early in the game.

The main draw to inFamous is the ability to choose what kind of character you want to be... a hero that fights for the greater good, or an anti-hero who fights mostly for himself (you're not really a true villian, but you don't give two shits about anyone else but you). You will constantly be given choices within missions on what you can do and the populous will react around you differently based on it.

I've so far played as "hero" Cole and when your "karma" meter goes higher on the hero side, people will run up and take pictures of you, clap, cheer and sometimes ask you for help. From what I've heard, the "infamous" side has civilians fearing you.

Graphicly speaking, the game is great - it runs very nicely with no slowdowns and the graphical style is sweet. The cut-scenes dotted throught the story are all done in semi-still images that look like they're from a comic book (and in a super-hero origins kinna game like this, it fits perfectly). There are no graphical bugs to speak of in the game.

Audio-wise, everything sounds fine, the voice acting works (and has some clever jokes once in a while) and the music (when it kicks in) only hightens the scene.

The story is fantastic - that's all I can say here. Some people apparenly feel the game is dry at the beginning and sometimes quit out before getting past the 1st island... but those who keep going get some really amazing twists and cool things to see and do. I'm near the ending and it's looking to be epic.

Gameplay, of course, is the big thing and this game brings it to the table very nicely. Travel in-game is mostly limited to on-foot (because, as they explain early-on, Cole will more than likely blow up a car if he sits in it with his electrical powers). One of the things Cole is blessed with other than his electric super powers is that he can survive long falls without taking any damage. This is very good, since one major aspect to controlling yourself in this game is free-running (climbing up walls, running across roofs, that sorta thing). The game rather intuitively allows Cole to grab almost any survace large enough for his fingers/toes to hold from. Even if you're only a foot off, Cole will still likely reach and grab it or partially be magnetized to it (which sometimes seems kinna odd). Combat-wise, you use your basic attack (an energy bolt) very often on enemies. The game has no auto-aim, so you're manually targeting whenever you're in firing mode... which works incredibly well. If you're in a generally right area for a head shot (or head shock), it will likely land (which normally KOs your opponent).

Your other basic ability is to drain electricity from any object that has a charge. This helps recover from damage and lets you use special abilities you gain later on in the game. Sometimes, you can even fire your basic energy bolt to charge up a metal object and pull more electricity from it. It's kinna funny how you can suck electricity from an object to heal, fire your energy bolt rapid-fire into the object to charge it up again, then drain it again for a re-fillable health pack. It can also save your life sometimes.

There are a few very clever elements to inFamous that they threw in. First and foremost, if you're in a section of the city that has no electricity, Cole feels weaker and cannot find places to recharge. Cole also be effected by water. If you walk through a puddle, it'll become electrified (killing anyone in the puddle). If you're in shallow water, like a fountain, you take damage. If you fall into the river, you die instantly.

I won't spoil any of the special powers, but they will begin to help you as the game progresses from little aspects like transportation to big elements like attacking. I will tell you that you earn experience points (XP) from fighting and completing missions. This XP can be used to purchase upgrades to your abilities.

Not only does your negative/positive karma effect people's outlook and changes elements of the story, but it also effects your abilities. Some abilities get different traits based on if you're good or bad... like doing more damage to the enemy or restraining them. There are also some skills that become different (or more accurately, you gain a different skill) if your good or bad.

For all it's great aspects, there are a few faults... but nothing major. First and most direct is that there are a few control/terrain glitches. Once in a while, you'll find yourself stuck on one spot where two pieces of ground connect (like say part of a sidewalk onto a dock). Since the game is so intuitive and lets you partially stick to surfaces, it kind of gets a little confused. All you need to do is jump to fix it, so it's forgivable (and it doesn't happen often). The only other small complaint I have is that many side-missions are repeated throughout the three islands. Fortunately, you can bring up the map and see by the name of the mission what kind it likely is and do them in whatever order you want (if you want to at all). Completing side-missions takes over territory (taken over territory prevents enemies from attacking you while running around). Still, these gripes are very small.

I will give you one warning... this game is ADDICTIVE and will suck you in. If anyone reading has "next level" syndrome (where you say "I'll turn it off after the next section.", then when you get there, you keep playing to the next section and so on), you're gonna be trapped in this game until your eyes hurt, the PS3 overheats (auto-save, don't worry) or you have to turn it off "or else". Also, since there are two endings and the cut scenes change based on your karma, the game has replay value... so you will be in for a long haul.

A lot of reviewers have given inFamous a 9.5/10 score... I have to agree. There are some small issues, but if you have a PS3, this is a must-buy! Trust me on this one, this game lives up to it's reputation and hype. If you were wondering about buying this, don't - it's not likely you'll regret this purchase.

Oh... and about inFamous vs Prototype (because I've heard so many people compare them), I haven't played Prototype before, but I from what I've heard, Prototype starts big, then peters out, while inFamous starts a little slow (say like GTA), but then gets bigger and better... it just goes insane after a while! Most reviewers seem to agree as well, as inFamous has a higher rating on average.

Bottom Line: 9.5 out of 10 - Buy this game!

It's been a little while of mild annoyance, but today, I noticed it and couldn't be happier...

The "Check all" and "Delete Checked" buttons are back and working!

That was probably the only thing that was bugging me about FA's systems lately and now, it's fixed. So, everything is back and running nicely.

Now if only DA's systems would be fixed... especially the "when I delete a watcher's deviation/journal from my updates, it STAYS deleted".

Hey everyone.

Just posting to say I've changed my old icon pic.

The orignal all angry one I used from my pirate concept picture was actually used originally as a placeholder while I was getting a new one (or thought I was). Apparently, when I put that image in to hold place, the person thought I got my own avatar icon and decided not to do one.

No worries.

Anyways, until I get something else, I'll use this one. It's, of course, another one of my pictures just altered into an icon... but I think it's a lot nicer and appealing than the last one.

So, let's see... I drew, hung out with the girls... and oh yeah... I went flyin' into a ditch! WEE!

No, seriously... I was in the second and worst car accident I can remember...

...and yet... I'm okay...

No, I don't mean physically... well, YEAH, that too. Nobody was hurt at all. I mean at no point whatsoever was I freaked, scared... I was and am completely calm, collected... unshaken whatsoever. I feel like it was just another day.

Kate and Robynne both reacted differently. Kate was crying (normal reaction), Robynne was stressed but calm enough. Me, I was just out, acting like normal. Weird.

Okay, so here's what happened...

It was probably closer to 5am; it had been snowing for quite some time before we left the local Tim Hortons. We'd been drawing for hours and it was time to go. The road wasn't plowed and Kate had all-season tires, not winter... though she's a great driver and has been in worse weather than this.

About 2 minutes away from Robynne's house, the car fishtailed, but nothing too bad. A few seconds later, it fishtailed drasticly (my guess is she hit ice on the passenger side), almost spun out complely, just barely missed someone's mailbox, plowed through their garbage (which so happily was where I was sitting in the car), slid into the ditch and rolled onto it's side.

Robynne and Kate were hanging from their sides, while I was practicly on the ground. I and Robynne unbuckled. Kate couldn't, or she'd drop and crush me... so she had to prop herself up. While I phoned 911, I helped relieve some of her weight.

About 5 minutes later, some people came over and helped the girls out of the car. Now free to move, I calmly clamoured out and looked at the car.

So, long story short (too late), Kate got home, I'm at Robynne's house and everyone is fine. Kate's leg's a bit sore from it being pressed against the gear shift, but otherwise, no worries.

I wonder what tomorrow will bring? XP
