Calling all Carthage fans...
Posted 8 years agoA first for this rhino - now appearing in a comic that takes place in the soaktown universe of nexus ... those who are fans of the harder themes of my gallery will find much to get the blood racing in the coming week or two, i assure you.

Holiday wish
Posted 8 years agoThe external trappings may change: birthday of sol invictus, midnight wild hunt of souls and dogs, a baby in a manger, the death of a prophet. What doesn't is the consciousness of the passing of time, short days and the ever present freeze that seems to compress humanity together around the precious light in warm spaces.
Whatever you call it, and however you do it - even if it's just 2 days off the grind, make it a good one.

Here's five dollars, go see a Star War
Posted 8 years agoSo... the new movie's great - finally the series gets the pre-se-whatever-quel it deserves.
No fucking lightsabers
No dark side emo hair
No silly minority empowerment narratives
No trade negotiations
No vaguely racist accents played for comedy
No 80's horizontal wipe transitions
No stupid KIDS
it doesn't try to pretend like it's anymore than it is, which is a movie about space ships, explosions, rebels and imperials. It dumps the stupid opening crawl fanfare that all the movies and games have done in remembrence of HIM. From from that first moment, the very start of the movie, a feeling dawns in the theatre like a drop of soap in a greasy sink instantly clearing the filmy water. It gets that Star Wars is not just a catholic mass where all the holy tropes are just restated once again and everyone leaves church. It doesn't try to be transcendent, it's just an entertaining action movie, it tells its own story (really a WWII heist movie) that happens to have sound effects and vehicles you are weirdly sentimental for. And it's fun!
The only sadness leaving the theatre is the realization that the rest of the trilogy has to be played out; it's all downhill from here.

Democracy in America
Posted 9 years agoNevertheless, the epoch of the election of a President of the United States may be considered as a crisis in the affairs of the nation. The influence which he exercises on public business is no doubt feeble and indirect; but the choice of the President, which is of small importance to each individual citizen, concerns the citizens collectively; and however trifling an interest may be, it assumes a great degree of importance as soon as it becomes general. The President possesses but few means of rewarding his supporters in comparison to the kings of Europe, but the places which are at his disposal are sufficiently numerous to interest, directly or indirectly, several thousand electors in his success. Political parties in the United States are led to rally round an individual, in order to acquire a more tangible shape in the eyes of the crowd, and the name of the candidate for the Presidency is put forward as the symbol and personification of their theories. For these reasons parties are strongly interested in gaining the election, not so much with a view to the triumph of their principles under the auspices of the President-elect as to show by the majority which returned him, the strength of the supporters of those principles.
For a long while before the appointed time is at hand the election becomes the most important and the all-engrossing topic of discussion. The ardor of faction is redoubled; and all the artificial passions which the imagination can create in the bosom of a happy and peaceful land are agitated and brought to light. The President, on the other hand, is absorbed by the cares of self-defence. He no longer governs for the interest of the State, but for that of his re-election; he does homage to the majority, and instead of checking its passions, as his duty commands him to do, he frequently courts its worst caprices. As the election draws near, the activity of intrigue and the agitation of the populace increase; the citizens are divided into hostile camps, each of which assumes the name of its favorite candidate; the whole nation glows with feverish excitement; the election is the daily theme of the public papers, the subject of private conversation, the end of every thought and every action, the sole interest of the present. As soon as the choice is determined, this ardor is dispelled; and as a calmer season returns, the current of the State, which had nearly broken its banks, sinks to its usual level: but who can refrain from astonishment at the causes of the storm?

Ryan Carthage at BFLC , and more
Posted 9 years agoAs much as it pains me to deliberately travel to Reno, Nevada, I'll be at BFLC starting thursday. I've heard a lot of good things about this con, so we shall see. I won't bother you with the questionaire - in short, come and say hi if you want. Look for the rhino shooting craps.
After Reno, i have a major backlog of pictures to post, and most importantly a long term collaborative project with a good friend that must be done this month.
And after that, i hope to debut Ryan's fucket list. More details later.

Ryan Carthage at MFF
Posted 10 years agoAlright. So here goes one of these things. First off why are they called memes? They have nothing to do with the Dawkins definition, or the bastardized definition of Willy Wonka gifs with pithy text on them. It's more like a self promoting "me-me" ... but I digress.
My first con experience was at a regional con this summer and I'll be honest for the most part I wasn't really amused by what I saw. I've been convinced to go to this one against my better judgement with some good friends. And again ... to be honest, I'm more interested in seeing my good friends, the windy city, it's museums, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra then I am the convention floor. But I'm giving it all one more chance. The flight was cheap.
Where are you staying?
Bunking at the chic urban loft of CrimsonLeonore along with cool dudes hyperion-enigma and Ciaran.an.Oiche
What days wlll you be there?
Maybe Friday. Saturday. Don't see myself lingering around too long.
Who will you hang out with during the convention?
My close, exclusionary circle of friends listed above. Well that and ... drop me a note or say hi and we'll do lunch.
How can I find you?
Send me a note here or if you have my skype, do that. I don't use twitter or any other social network. I'll be wearing my infamous rhino pattern shirt. And badges.
Are there any panels you might be attending?
The 2015 MFF rhino panel - it will be just me in a janitorial closet. Otherwise, in the off chance there's something interesting, but I assume not.
Are you attending any stage or public performances?
Absolutely not.
Will you be suiting?
No.
Which suit(s) are you bringing?
No.
Do you draw?
Yes.
Are you taking commissions or trades?
Maybe a trade. I don't post my art, and I draw really slow. But I actually make my living professionally in art. Y'all don't even realize.
How old are you?
33
How tall are you?
6'1"
Can I talk to you?
Sure.
Can I touch you?
Normal people begin with waving of hands followed by handshakes.
Can I visit your room?
Private residence, so most unlikely.
Can I buy you drinks?
Offerings of coffee are always appreciated.
Can I give you stuff?
What like chlorine poisoning? Do I know you? .... maybe.
Can I hug or snuggle with you?
*stares*
What’s your goal for the con this year?
"Don't die, don't end up on the news" - Fek
Are you nice?
Kind of.
If I see you, how should I get your attention?
Say hello.
Where will you be most of the time during the days?
If I'm at the con, i'll be wondering around, taking it all in. If I'm not, I'll be at the Chicago Art Institute, The old Symphony Center, or being a tourist.
What/where will you be eating?
My gracious hostess will probably decide. The Pizza better live up to the hype....
Can I come with you for food/fun etc?
Maybe if you don't annoy thie living shit out of me? : )
Can I take your picture?
Can I take your smartphone? Please ask before photographing the wildlife.
In all seriousness, if you want to meet up, say hi or arrange it. I've been told I'm a good conversationalist, as long as the topic isn't anime or video games in which case 99% of the con is waiting to talk to you

Art Raffle Results ...
Posted 10 years agoLucky #2
Evane has won the number slot in my prize raffle, that lucky bum.
https://www.random.org/sequences/?m.....ate.2015-09-14
I will choose one of the other entries as my "elective" choice sometime this week. Stay tuned. You've all given me some interesting picture ideas and have made the choice difficult - and I want all who entered to know that I'm open to getting more art done collaboratively, send me notes and we can talk about it!

Sexcelsior! 1K Watchers / Art Raffle.
Posted 10 years agoAfter lurking on the sidelines for a very, very long time ... a year ago I plunged into rhino-dom and asserting a small presence in this thing called the fandom. Little did I know then the varied friends I would meet and the valuable life experiences it would facilitate... and how much I have come to embrace my animus as not just a character but a personal expression that has informed my life.
So on the event of hitting 1K watches I just wanted to thank you all for your support. You all give me strength: from those who i've encountered in meatspace, to new skype friends around the country and the world , and even to those anonymous paintcan icon watchers. I was one once.
===
Free Art: A Rendezvous with Ryan
So I've have decided to run a small raffle event to mark this occaision. I've gotten quite a few requests for art with Ryan and i'd like to give you an opportunity to have it. Simply tell me:
1. Your Character / Species
2. Ref (You must have one)
3. Tell me in detail what would happen if your character has a rendezvous with Ryan. I'm open to most scenarios, and sex or violence is not neccesary. Dinner? Bloodsport? Hardcore pounding? I'm game for it all - except bottoming. The more details the better - settings, fighting stances positions ... etc.
4. In the spirit of my Carthage, tell me your favorite quote.
I will assign a number to all entrants and will draw a number next Monday (9/14). I will hire a quality artist of my choice make it happen. In addition, at my discretion I [i]may[/b] choose one scenario - if it is compelling enough - to be rendered also. There are no ways to get more numbers, no reposts or tumbler twitter BS. Your best way of increasing your odds is giving me a compelling premise.
Much obliged,
- RC

Artists you should watch.
Posted 10 years agoHello smiling friends.
Just thought I'd take a bit of time today to mention three artists that deserve a look-over next time you're in the market for a picture ...
First off, it is a crime that Cerberus_Artworks has relatively few watchers on this site. With his skills i'd put him in the top tier of artists here ... he works in a classic fantasy style that recalls the classic pulp illustration from the 70's - 80's. Extremely accomplished and professional. Please watch him! I command it!
Furikake is an up and coming character artist here who I think has a great sense of color and experiment. Very reasonable prices for fantastic work - especially keen on colorful designs like avians and reptiles, she has rendered my monochrome beast several times.
Lenexwants - WARNING - don't click his link just yet. Lenex is a specialist in extreme CBT art that is honestly not to the taste of most people ... However because of his work in that area he is sadly not very appreciated for his "plain old" illustration. In addition to the portrait i use as my headliner piece and skype portrait, lenex has also drawn me my user icon here, as well as a fantastic ref sheet that I will be posting very soon (preview here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7.....ew?usp=sharing ) He opens up every month for very reasonably priced work - why not give him a shot?
Enjoy the rest of summer ...

Justice that arrives like a thunderbolt.
Posted 10 years agoSame sex marriage is here and now the law of the land... the culmination of decades of aspiration and struggle. A truly historic day.
Yet I can't help but wish this was enacted by our elected representatives in government, instead of 9 lawyers who dodged questions in contentious confirmation hearings. Gay marriage had momentum in the people's houses across the nation and seemed to be doing quite well without a judicial edict. Now we have Obergefell v. Hodges as the new harder-to-pronounce Roe v Wade like touchstone, instead of law.
As someone with libertarian tendencies I'm happy with the results, nonetheless. I'm curious to see what becomes of the LGBT institutional apparatus, what will they now do to pass the time?

Posted 10 years agoEveryone should probably calm down over this,
Smaller advertisers will most likely be crowded out of this site in favor of ads served by networks, which is a little sad in making the site a little less community-ish, but many of you probably block them already.
There will probably be a little bit more data mining on this site - which you as a user of the internet in 2015 - have practically nothing to further worry about. Your vitals and consumer intentions have already been stripped from your google emails, facebook posts, amazon queries and encoded into anonymous persistent tags to serve you advertisements that you probably already block.
It's worth noting every piece of art on here has an artist's copyright.
...
The positive case stated, sometimes acquiring companies do choke a golden goose after buying it (dramatically over serving ads for example, or aggressively cross-selling) and if that happens then there will be a flight and they will lose their investment as FA's superior userbase migrates to lesser sites. Then FA will be rendered a hollow husk, only to be purchased by Justin Timberlake as sort of a internet hipster renovation project in 2020.

Chapter 1: Furoretical Physics
Posted 11 years agoSo how did I find myself here... well for a long time normal (human) erotic comics do absolutely nothing for me. There's something about the illustration conventions of the human form that generally obliterates any sexual interest for me, can't put my finger on it but it resides somewhere in between anime triangle hair, plastic cell shading and unnatural mouth shapes.
And then I discovered furry ... Now here's a world where the characters are native to the world of the page ... and it completely unlocked erotic art for me. A place where the whole spectra of fetishes can be explored, pushed to some ridiculous limit, and given endless variety by endless artists in a safe, mostly understanding environment. And its all heightened by the overlay of the animal thing, which is like 40,000 years of deeply ingrained human-animal totemism from universal agriculture and hunting themes, displaced by our urban existence onto Walt Disney cartoons, comic books, and a dash of the Discovery channel. Each species with their ancient / Jungian archetypes and symbology... human emotions and sexual personae metaphorically externalized, melded onto surface form... I think 8 out of 9 Anthropologists would agree: its pretty bleeping hot.
And I guess the mirror reverse is true ... fursuits do absolutely nothing for me in the human world ... how can such meager artifice compare to the physicality of humanity (no offense meant to costume people) In my mind, reality and the furry page both exist in different lanes but quite a happy parallel.
Well, maybe at least until they invent Holodecks, and then shits going to get freaky.
