Furry Star Trek Fans... Who were those aliens?
General | Posted 2 months agoBack in the 80's-ish era there was a Star Trek Comic book produced by D.C. comics.
It was original crew, set in the cinematic universe but also used material and characters from the animated series.
I am trying to find information on the Trio of Squirrel-like aliens who were used as background characters for the most part.
Although once, while Kirk was in a wheelchair like device recovering from being stabbed, he struggled to reach one of the comms units on the wall when the trio of Squirrels assisted by standing on one another's shoulders to reach the intercom button. Kirk thanked them and quietly said to his friend "Remind me to have the intercoms lowered.".
I have been struggling to find any information on these guys. Were they really that obscure that the internet has no clue?

How Fan-Artists work...
General | Posted a year agoI think deep down this is very close to the truth how Fan-Artists for hire go about deciding what to draw.
As Tom Leher once sang...
"It's good to have integrity,
I'll tell you why.
Cause when you have integrity,
It means your price is really high"

Hurts
General | Posted 3 years agoLeft facial cheek is swollen and the interior tastes like raw meat and tobacco ash.
Family and the receptionist at the Dental office think I have an impacted tooth.
Fortunately thanks to Canadian health care and Blue Cross this isn't too big a concern monetarily. It just aches in the way you would get from getting socked in the jaw really hard.
Also fortunately I get to see the dentist in the morning so whatever else this will come to a head around 9AM. I just hate how this swelling feels like it could burst in a Cronenberg sort of way before then.

Getting the (heroic) band together.
General | Posted 4 years agoNot too long ago I came up with a short list of premises that would give a group of characters a reason to hang out together.
Useful for stories or gaming, I felt I covered a fair number of excuses for various people to form a team.
If anyone else has ideas to add, then please... by all means do so.
So... in no particular order I present my 7 best premises.
1: the Goonies.
The group has just ALWAYS been together. Friends forever, through thick and thin since kindergarten. Everyone is part of the team because it's hard to keep secrets when you're as close as kids in an 80's movie.
2: Classmates/Co-workers
Not as close as live-long friends but casual acquaintances who see one another on a regular basis, eight hours a day, five days a week and form a decent bond because of it.
3: Fight Club
Once or twice a week the members of the team meet for some manner of club meeting (anything from toy train enthusiasts to group therapy sessions) and have become decently close as a result even though they seldom cross paths the rest of the week.
4: Well, isn't that just Fantastic.
Thrown together by fate, the group experienced a life-transforming event that redefines them, give them a common origin and unites them as a team. May or may not involve cosmic rays.
5: Did the time.
Whether a supermax or Juvie hall , incarceration changes anyone who has experienced it. Everyone in the team has been there, done that and got the orange jumpsuit to prove it, and are either now united as a much more closely-knit band of thieves or all determined to turn their abilities to a greater cause.
6: Neighborhood watch.
Whether your home is a two-story house with a two-car garage and a white-picket fence, or a run-down brownstone in a slum, you and your fellow occupants are in it together because of your proximity with one another.
7: Insert capital letter here - Team.
All members were all former military personelle. It doesn't matter if you were a commando or a member of the secretarial pool, you all know one another, you all trust one another enough to function as a team outside of the rigid structure of the military.

Happy Gary Burghoff Day!
General | Posted 5 years agoHappy Gary Burghoff Day!
Today is the birthday of the man who was once Radar O'Reilly from the M.A.S.H. television series (And later among other roles played the lovestruck mathematics teacher Bob Willis in the Man in the Santa Claus Suit).
Why do I bring this up?
Well when I went travelling last year while in Wisconsin I found a place where they still sold the soft drink Grape Nehi (Radar's beverage of choice) and so my brother and I bought a few. He suggested we wait for Burghoff's birthday to try it and salute one of America's most iconic television characters and the actor who played him.

General | Posted 5 years agoThe household Coffee Pot has finally given up.
I mean it lasted quite some time, given it's on average made three "14 cup" pots of java daily for three or four years I'd say that Cuisinart did good work on this one.
It just means that my family and I had to pull out the reserve.
It's a small tabletop urn kind of coffee pot. Avocado green, maybe three cups worth of coffee at a time. Says EMPIRE on the side.
Man, it feels like we've always had this thing. My earliest memory was it traveling with us in the car years back when we drove to Disneyland.
It's always been there for us when we found ourselves 'between' coffee makers.
Anyways it makes a powerful brew which will keep us going until we can plan an excursion to Canadian Tire and get a new machine.

General | Posted 5 years agoOne of the worst parts about the whole social distancing thing is when you fall into the routine of staying at home and doing nothing it actually feels harder to perform self-maintenance.
Apathy and malaise are some of our own worst enemies.
Fortunately brushing my teeth is easy to remember to do because it really does feel uncomfortable to me to NOT clean them regularly but as for the rest... I mean … ugh.
Sure when my hair starts feeling itchy and greasy I'll resort to washing it in the bathroom sink and while refreshing that only takes you so far. As for the rest of me I keep thinking "It's too early to shower" or "It's too late to shower" or whatever.
I actually had to force myself to get in the stall and give myself the hard scrubbing I really should have done at the beginning of all of this.
I won't go into detail but lemmie just say this, when the soap foam is a grayish color you KNOW you left it too long.
It reminds me of something my mom once said. "Some days you wish you had someone to put you under the water and scrub you down for you."
So people let me remind you, in these times of Social Distancing and Self-Quarantine do NOT let that be an excuse to let your own hygenic standards lapse.
You're better off keeping yourself washed and clean on a regular schedule.
If nothing else it will give you something to do.

General | Posted 6 years agoA cousin of mine is getting married and being related I of course was asked to attend.
Unfortunately this means I'm traveling from Winnipeg Manitoba to London Ontario by car.
That's right. The Sable is doing a road trip. It's with my big brother and his wife but still, it counts. Right?
So if anyone is trying to contact me, best do it before the 5th and after the 17th.

General | Posted 8 years agoIn my time with a large bushy mustache I have discovered a number of things you can't have with one.
You can't have Corn on the Cob with a mustache like that.
You can't have Caramel Apples with a mustache like that.
You can't have a nice facial tan with a mustache like that.
and today I found out you cannot have certain kinds of alcohol with one.
Specifically some kinds of shooters.
Seeing as the WAMM picnic has been postponed, some friends and I went out and despite my attempts to stay with my single pint of Guinness they convinced me to have three shots with it.
The first two were ok, but a little messy resulting in some good natured laughter as I tried to sop them out of my 'stache with napkins.
The third one was one of those flaming ones where you blow out the fire JUST before you tilt it back.
I regret to say that my timing was somewhat off.
Good news is that other than my pride I was not hurt, I came through without any injuries.
Medium news is my handlebar mustache took the brunt of the fiery onslaught.
Bad news is it was singed bad enough to call it a write-off.
So, it's gone. A razor finished the job that the fire started.

The Winnipeg Amateur Movie Makers are seeking new members.
General | Posted 8 years agoThe Winnipeg Amateur Movie Makers have been around since 1935 and has been a place for film and video enthusiasts to meet with like minded people, discuss the latest innovations and to review one another's work and now even eighty years later our members have been in touch with all the changes in the medium.
From Celluloid, to Magnetic tape, to Video Disc and now Digital, our club has understood that while the technology will continue to advance the one thing that won't change is that people will want to make the most of their equipment. Whether it's in the use of the camera, editing the material or just good storytelling the W.A.M.M. club members have always been there to help one other produce a better finished product.
We would like to invite anyone in the Winnipeg area who is interested, to join us each month learn, share and participate in the great hobby of videography and film.
Where can you find us?
We hold our meetings at the Church of the Way on the corner of Lilac Street and Scotland Avenue
(One block north of Grant Avenue)
When do we meet?
We meet on the Second Wednesday of every month at around 6:59 PM
This means that for April we meet on the 12th
Should I bring anything?
Mostly yourself.
If you have any short videos you have done or want creative input on that's good.
A buck or two for the Coffee pot is always appreciated.
Cookies and other snacks are not necessary (but we won't turn our noses up at them either)
It's a great excuse to get out of the house one a month, meet like-minded people and socialize a little.
Please, if you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask.

No Anthrocon this year for me... alas.
General | Posted 10 years agoWell after watching the economic trends for the past few months I can now say with total certainty that I will NOT be attending Anthrocon this year.
It's not that I don't want to go, I really enjoy it and taking my vacation to the states for a few weeks every summer.
Heck a friend is planning on bailing on AC in favor of doing a genuine road trip to a Firearms Enthusiast event on New Mexico and asked me if I wanted to head down with him. Unfortunately I have the same problem there as well.
I don't like being mooch and to be frank and honest the Canadian dollar is just doing too poorly for me to go to the states this year.
Now don't get me wrong, it's usually been somewhat less than the US dollar but I have what I call the 'Dime Barrier' for my stateside excursions.
More or less the U.S. dollar hovers in and around $1.10 Canadian but as of the time I write this it is worth $1.33 Canadian. This is a little much for my coffers.
Great for my U.S. friends and acquaintances though. If anyone from below the 49th parallel wants to come up here and take advantage of that sort of imbalance then please, by all means. I won't hold it against you.
It just means I'll probably be having a Stay-Cation this year.
On a side note, this also means I'm blowing off on growing my mustache this year. As much as I love that thing, I think I'll spend some time tanning my upper lip this summer.
So unless I win the lottery or the economy suddenly takes off like a rocket I'm firmly entrenched on this side of the border.

A long journey
General | Posted 10 years agoWell around 8pm on the 4th I'm starting my journey to AC.
From Winnipeg to Toronto (hope the airport authority works out the labor disputes by then http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news.....ticle25246157/ ) and then from Toronto to Boston where I'll be staying with a friend who wants to show the 'poor underprivileged Canadian' all about U.S. culture and history.
After a few days there then we'll drive back to Pittsburgh and enjoy the experience that is Anthrocon.
Should prove interesting.

Anthrocon 2015 approaching
General | Posted 10 years agoWell it's about a month away so I better start the final preparations for heading down.
Some friends want me to visit Boston first and then I'll boomerang back to Pittsburgh with them by van. Sounds like fun and I'm always up to do a little of the tourist thing.
So this year is 'Viking Invasion' huh? Hmm... I suddenly want a hairy vest and a big metal hat with horns.
I wonder how many Minnesota fans will take this opportunity to show their colors?
Any other Manitoba furries gonna head out to AC this year?

The Mustache says you Must Ache
General | Posted 11 years agoWell, my mustache has reached optimal curlitude and is ready for the convention.
As usual my mom keeps telling me I should shave it off and let the world see my good looks, and while I see her point I kinda like the mustache too.
It gets attention and helps me stand out in a crowd that's already massively eclectic.
Heh. Not too long ago on Gensisw's livestream she mentioned that in a conversation about mustaches somehow an 'Abel' was now a unit of mustache measurement. Go figure.
Some of my friends have suggested I should 'update' my avatar's look this year and have the hair and mustache be copper red to match mine. Not a bad idea, really.
What do you all think?

A.C. stands for Anticipating Canadian?
General | Posted 11 years agoWell I've gone and made my travel arrangements for the 2014 Anthrocon in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.
Playing it a little different this year though. Some friends and associates have invited me down to Boston a few days in advance for what they call a "Cowboy Shoot". Long story short I can dress up like I'm from the 1800's and shoot holes in designated targets along with other people dressed up like they're from the 1800's shooting holes in designated targets.
Sounds like fun.
So anyways I'll be taking a plane there from Winnipeg on the 27th (with a stopover in Montreal), have fun at the Cowboy Shoot and then drive with my friends from there to Pittsburgh where it's A.C. for a few days then I'll be catching a nice leisurely train on the 6th to Grand Forks where I'll do some last minute Cross-border shopping before heading back to Winnipeg.
It should be a full and fascinating trip for me.

It's a Marshmallow World... or is that Peppermint Winter?
General | Posted 12 years agoRight now snow is falling gently upon Winnipeg.
It's what I call a 'Sugar Sifter' snowfall because it reminds me of what it's like when I put confectioner's sugar through a sieve to make it all light and fluffy for baking. It's rather pleasant and peaceful outside and I caught myself singing "Marshmallow World" while shoveling, and this surprised me. Usually by this time of year I'm already experiencing "Christmas Burnout", an expression I use to describe how one feels after being bombarded with all manner of holiday paraphernalia since October. This year it feels like the merchants are giving us some recovery time between the various celebrations.
It's nice to have the Christmas spirit this close to the actual holiday for a change.
It's a little embarrassing when your friends catch you singing carols in July.

Out of town on a Rail
General | Posted 12 years agoWell here I am in Grand Forks.
Around midnight I intend to be on a train from here to Chicago and then from Chicago to Pittsburgh for Anthrocon.
I am hoping to meet, mingle, network, observe, talk-to and bask in the presence of furries from more locations than I think about on a daily basis.
If anyone who reads this is going to be on either train when I am, chances are you'll recognise me (If for no other reason than my mustache) feel free to say hi.
Especially if you're from WInnipeg or Manitoba in general.

Justification
General | Posted 13 years agoYou ever make a purchase that you've never been entirely certain of?
For years I've been wanting one of those cowboy Dusters you see in a lot of old westerns. http://www.culturedcowboy.com/outba.....tbackcoats.htm When they first hit the mainstream they were expensive and I could easily turn away from them for the cost issues.
As time passed the cost became far more reasonable to me and so on my way back from AnthroCon this year I made up my mind to get one. "Why the hell not? I need a raincoat and my Trenchcoat is better saved for formal occasions." I said to myself. So I ponied up the dough, shouldered the cross-border cost and had a nice brown Duster... in time for a fairly dry summer.
It stayed in my closet and I often looked at it wondering if I really HAD to buy it when I did.
Last week Winnipeg had the first 'snowfall' of the year... and by snow I mean slush. I may have been the only person happy to see it arrive. I pulled out my Duster and my waterproof leather hat and walked to work in relative comfort.
Since then we've had a few more wet days with just ordinary drizzle or rain and now I finally feel I can stop feeling any regret over my purchase.
Maybe soon I will get to use my Arrow Sash so I can feel good about that too.

SPROING! and clatter
General | Posted 13 years agoAbout a week ago I was flossing and when I did this one troublesome spot (bit of a messed up filling which loved to basically shred my tooth floss) the string suddenly popped out of the space between the teeth in a 'SPROING!' kind of way... then a moment later I heard a very tiny little ceramic-sounding rattle in the sink.
Pretty much my resin-based filling had popped free and left a disturbing square-shaped hole in my tooth.
Now, it's not that I couldn't afford any dental surgury (thank heavens for the Canadian Health Care system) it was the small detail that I was in no physical discomfort from this gaping hole into what I understand is a fairly sensitive location. I had terrible thoughts of a cavity that had gotten under a filling and taken out the whole tooth resulting in me having a two-part, multi-hour appointment for a second (and far more obvious as the first was a molar) golden tooth.
I made the appointment, went to the dentist and pretty much worried myself sick in the waiting room. Finally I got in and once the investigation and drilling got underway I found myself relaxing. I still needed my MP3 player to help drown out the sound of the drill but in the end it was just a fresh filling and everyone was happy.
Well, I still had to work with a numb lower lip that I somehow kept chewing on but only found out when the painkiller wore off. Still... small price to pay I suppose.

Another AC on it's way
General | Posted 13 years agoWell I'm about as prepared as possible for the 2012 Anthrocon.
Got my train tickets, my Travel health insurance settled (thank heavens for the Canadian Health Care System), got more than one battery for my camcorder and a quick check of my other items indicate that I have enough comfortable clothing for the journey there and back.
Oh yes...
One more thing.
My Moustache has reached optimal levels.
It's strange really. I mean I like my moustache.
It's part of my identity, but somtimes it is a bother to deal with.
The care it requires, finding the correct kind of wax, learning how to eat and drink while having a built-in filter system. Heck just learning how to sleep with one is an adventure.
Trust me when I say that, Facial Hair tends to add a new level of "Bed-Head" to your life.
More than once I've concidered shaving it off for the convention and just removing the fuss from my vacation.
Of course it is how a number of friends I've met there identify me. I remember getting off the train two years ago and there was HKUriah, Thorne and Pepe all standing there like... well maybe not so much the Three Musketeers. More like the Three Stooges, and they were looking through all the peole getting off the train when at the same time all three spotted me and waved.
That being said I guess I'll keep the 'Stache for one more convention. It probably wouldn't be quite the same without it.
In fact recently someone online pointed out to me that my Red hair and big moustache would make a great highlight to a costume.
It weas a pretty good suggestion but I'm not sure that a Humanised version of "FLAM" from the MLP:FIM Episode "Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000" would really work unless I had a "FLIM" to team up with.

Keyboards
General | Posted 14 years agoI don't often post anything on my journals box because I'm never really sure I have anything worth saying here...
...well that and I very frequently forget HOW to post journals. Creative as I can be, Tech-Savvy I am not.
This being said I've noticed that I seem to do a lot of wear and tear on my computer keyboards.
This is not to say that I break them, but rather somehow I seem to wear the letters right off the keys fairly quickly.
I find it a bit of a pain because while I can type rather quickly without looking at the keys in most cases, sometimes when I hesitate over a word or spelling I tend to forget the reflex and look down and suddenly think "Crap! Which is which letter? "
Even with my current keyboard which has underlit keys that make the characters glow with a beautiful blue color, the coatings are wearig away leaving big shapless glowing blobs on the keys... and I really liked this one. It looked cool.
I find myself looking more and more at steampunk keyboards shich use the old typewriter keys that had the characters firmly protected by a layer of transparent plastic. Not to mention it would really give Blackie here some more personality.
Problem is nearly every one I look at online has been made for somone's personal use and they're just showing it off.
Can anyone out there suggest links where I might be able to find keyboards like that for public sale?

You Can Not Handle This 'Stache!
General | Posted 14 years agoNormally I grow my Moustache during the winter to keep my upper lip warm but mom asked me nicely not to because she wanted SO much to have one family photo where I didn't have a hairy upper lip.
And so as a gift to her I played the part of the dutiful son and shaved the area under my nose smooth, and being honest I liked how it looked.
But with AC coming up I started growing it back, mainly because I had such a positive feedback, last year, from just walking down the street or hallways or taking the escalator. Everywhere I went fellow furries complimented me on it and asked if it was real... or if they could touch it.
I kinda enjoyed that.
So I started growing it back a little while ago. It always feels like after the initial growth spurt it seems to slow to a crawl. However just the other day i looked in the mirror and found that I am now at the 'curley' stage. that is to say that it is now capable of being waxed and worked into a pair of hooks.
So at this upcoming AnthroCon look for the Canadian with the handlebar moustache and you might have found me.
Also I really like this song

AC bound
General | Posted 15 years agoSo I'm booking time off and making arrangments to get to Anthrocon.
This would be my first Furry Con ever so I'm guessing it will be quite the education.
Does anyone have any advice on what to expect, what to avoid and what is a Must do?

Scraps?
General | Posted 19 years agoWell folks I've decided to use my 'scraps' folder for something other than nothing at all.
I'm now housing other people's works that they did for me in there.
Wonderful wonderful peoples and their hard work must be preserved for posterity!
Thanks folks.
