So some know, others do not. I have been struggling with some health issues. As it turns out, I have cancer. I have a surgery consult on Monday, which also happens to be my birthday, so happy birthday to me. I will not be taking commissions while I am going through this. I am not sure what will happen next, but at the very least I have surgery to look forward to and possibly chemo. Hey guys. Okay so I am going to make this relatively short. I have a medical concern that I am dealing with that has me under a lot of stress. The exact diagnosis currently is unknown and the hideous 'c' word is looming, which causes a tremendous amount of anxiety for me. This seems to need to be said, so here we go. As a reminder... I have a life outside of art. I have an autistic child who I care for every single day, especially now that she is schooled from home. I personally have anxiety and depression that I deal with that often times saps the hell out of my energy. I work as quickly as I can, however, sometimes I do get backlogged. I also do sometimes read notes and have to get back to them when I have a bit more time to sit down and actually write a response. Because yes it takes less time to read a note than it does to look at refs, look at the base, see if the character fits, find an appropriate price point for the complexity of the character, and respond back. I am sick and tired of people being nasty for absolutely no reason. I have been entirely transparent about my life. Sometimes I am quick as lightning because someone else is watching my daughter, my queue is cleared up, my muse is high, etc. Other times it may take a week for you to get your piece. I always try to be kind. I always try to be open. I always try to make sure everyone is happy.

You do not have a right to be nasty to me. Least of all when you have not even paid me! From now on I am just blacklisting people. I am done. I will not deal with people being nasty to me anymore. Period. If you decide to be nasty and rude, I will block you. Nobody, I repeat nobody, deserves to be treated the way I have been treated lately and it only seems to be getting worse not better.

As a side note... to those of you who have always been and continue to be pleasant and supportive. I love you. Thank you for being the way that you are. If it were not for the kind people who always have something nice to say, who always seem to be there to support me, and who always reach out with positivity then I would not be here anymore. So THANK YOU.

Firstly, what is a base?

A base is typically linework, sometimes with shading, lumi, etc. that can be purchased from an artist. The artist has established rules regulating the use of their bases. When buying a base piece the artist has established that another artist or colorist may sell commissions of the base so long as the artist or colorist is actually adding to the base. Which means adding color or customization. More often than not in the furry community that extends to interpreting an original character in the base image. Coloring the piece and editing ears, noses, tails, etc. to suit the character in question.

Secondly, base pricing.

Why are bases cheap? Typically because they are meant to be “mass produced”. They can in most cases be done quickly and thus an artist is able to complete two or three an hour, which ends up averaging out to $10-$15 an hour, which is a suitable amount of money to make for work. It isn’t great, but it is at least what one can expect to make at an entry level position. I say average because you still have to consider the price the artist paid to purchase the base file, which can be anywhere from $5 - $50 depending on the artist and how intricate the base is. That amount needs to be taken off the top before the colorist can make any money back on the base file.

Thirdly, custom edits.

So why ask for additional fees? Some characters are extremely complex and require additional time to be “plugged in” to existing bases. A character that would require more than thirty minutes of work for a $5 base would then be cutting into the colorist’s base pay. For example if a character and the edits required end up taking an hour to complete then the colorist only made $5 for an hour of work. So when an additional fee is requested it is because the colorist knows that they will have to spend more than the time they typically allow for a base piece in order to create a good finished product. This fact also extends to edits after the base piece is complete. Every note written takes time. Every edit made takes additional time. The colorist is extending additional time for everything they must do in order to complete the commission.

Now where do I stand in all of this?

I am an artist who has done and will do my own pieces, however, I am also a colorist who works with a lot of bases. The majority of my bases are $5. The bases that are priced higher than $5 are bases that I know immediately will take more than thirty minutes to complete no matter what characters are used for them. Usually the more expensive bases are either bases with multiple characters or bases with multiple layers that require extensive edits in order to fit a character accurately. Now for those who have worked it out in their head, that means I only really give myself $10 an hour. That’s less than what we’re fighting to raise minimum wage to, so please keep that in mind.

I rarely request additional fees. When I do request additional fees it is for extremely complex characters, characters I would have to custom add features in for, or accessories that are not included in base packs (glasses, wings, jewelry, etc.). In many cases I am happy to accommodate commissioners when I can. In some instances, however, that is just not possible. I also do free edits when it is an error on my part, like missing a particular marking or leaving out something that was requested in the order form. I have even been known to make edits for people when things are not my fault, like changing up lumi/shade layers or editing a color that a commissioner picked that they do not like when they see the finished product. Overall I am extremely accommodating and I try to make everyone happy.

What to expect going forward…

I will no longer be offering free edits that are not a direct result of my own error or negligence.
I will not be doing work on the weekends unless I find the free time and the will to do so. That includes completing pieces, replying to notes, replying to commission requests, etc. It is my prerogative when I work and when I do not. I have a family and my child will always come first.
Anyone who attempts to bully me, threaten me, belittle me, etc. will be blacklisted. I have had more than my fill of people just being nasty for no real reason. I will not allow people to treat me poorly anymore just because they feel a particular way.
Any edit I have to personally make by drawing from scratch and editing layers of shading/lumi/effects, I will not be offering for free. No matter how small I will no longer be doing these edits for free.
I will continue to be professional and respectful to everyone who commissions me, unless you treat me disrespectfully. If you attack me or abuse me, you forfeit the right to be treated respectfully.

One last thing…

To those of my commissioners who have always been pleasant to work with, thank you. You are appreciated and beloved. I am sorry that the bad apples in this world ruin things for the good. Please just be aware that I love and adore you all and take an incredible amount of joy in producing pieces for you. When people respond with excitement and gratitude it truly does warm my heart and continues to inspire me to keep doing the work that I do.
