Tell me about your salvia trips
Posted 14 years agoI've always been really fascinated with the effects of salvia. From what I've heard from people/experienced myself, I've found that there are a lot of aspects of the trip that stay the same from person to person. Anyways, while I take forever to compile a journal with refs to all my characters, I want to hear from you drug fiends out there. I don't want to influence responses, so I'd like to read responses from people before I share some of my ideas about salvia.
But here are a few questions you could possibly address:
1. How do you consume salvia and if you use an extract, what level do you use?
2. What do you feel like when it begins to take effect? During? Coming down?
3. How would you describe your mood throughout and after the trip?
P.S. I don't think salvia is necessarily for everyone. Be smart, be aware, be safe.

Slippin' The Stealth
Posted 15 years agoSeveral months ago I just kind of lost interest in the furry community, had to take a little break, get myself back on track with the art I really wanted to do. Y'know how that goes... I'm still a little wary of "returning" but there are a lot of really good artists here and I do draw a lot of inspiration from you people. Also, I blame this on

So yeah... I'll be around a bit, I'm always down for a chat (AIM: psychoticgryph).
Cheers

AARRRGGGGGG
Posted 16 years agoSchool is raping me in the ass right now. I sincerely apologize to the people I owe art to. UGH. I FEEL LIKE AN ASSHOLE.
But I had a blast on Halloween. Thizzed for the first time with a very special person and ran around on the beach in the moonlight. Beautiful.
Actual update SOON. I PROMISE.

Things to Do
Posted 16 years agoJust a reminder for myself. PLEASE inform me if I'm missing something because I'm very prone to forgetfulness. Also note that I'm not in Santa Cruz right now, so I don't have most of my art supplies, thus I won't start larger projects till I get back.
kairithekat - Badge Trade (inked) due: before Halloween
VodkaAndOrangeJuice - Trade (done!)
Disengorified - Flier/T-shirt Art due: before Nov. 14
Coco - Evil giraffe fucking up a baby elephant hahah
Okay, I think that's it.

Posted 16 years agoHoooooly shit 2217 messages to go though. Please bear with me, it's probably going to take me like, a week to get through all this. If there's something you need me to see, send a link!
Alaska kicked ass, I will post a few pics soon (though I could easily post hundreds, but I'm sure you don't want that). That place is massive and beautiful and I'm too lazy to do a tl;dr post on my trip right now. Instead, I'll give you a list of animals I saw: Brown bear, black bear, moose, coyote, pika, arctic ground squirrel, porcupine, Dall sheep, mountain goat, golden eagle, northern harrier, ptarmigan, bald eagle, tons of various gull birds (mostly black-legged kittiwake), about a million sea otters, orca, beluga!, salmon, uhhhh... my mind is failing me now. Went to a conservation center and saw elk and caribou and muskox. Anyways, great trip! Now to struggle through these messages....

Escaping the Heat Wave: Alaska Bound
Posted 16 years agoDamn, the California Bay Area just got hit with some pretty damn toasty weather. Fuck that, I'm going to Alaska. No idea why I stupidly sent out a request for trades, but I'm bringing my sketchbook so I can at least work on stuff, though without references.
So yeah, I'll be leaving on Monday (the 31st) and getting back on Wednesday the 9th. I LOVE YOU GUYS but it's time to go hiking and kayaking and general adventuring!
Also, Salvia is my friend and I need more now. Smoked the last of mine yesterday. One gram somehow lasted me two years. But I can't really bring myself to smoke it all that often.
See ya in a week and a half!

Posted 16 years agoSHIT. FUCK. FINALLY. Also, I'm going to see Down, The Melvins, and Weedeater this evening! I HAVE HAD MANY GOOD BEERS TONIGHT. MAY YOU ALL BE PLEASED WITH LIFE. IT IS A GOOD THING.
quick!
Posted 16 years agocomment with a ref, I feel like doing a quick pencil doodle. Only requirement is that it is anthro, preferably more simple (no wings/too many extra appendages). I'll wait a few minutes and just choose whichever appeals to me most.
So Many Nudes
Posted 16 years agohaha, sorry for the lack of updates people. I'm doing summer classes right now, both art thankfully, but it's still fucking killer. Mondays and Wednesdays are Figure Drawing (whee naked people!) from... 2pm to 9pm. YES. MY CLASS IS 7 HOURS LONG. It's fucking brutal but awesome and I've already improved so much in the past 2 weeks. I really want to scan some of my stuff on, but they're all on giant slabs of paper/newsprint so maybe pictures will have to suffice. Also taking a Marine Scientific Illustration class which kicks ass. I'm currently working on a species ID for the Magnificent Frigatebird.
Also, HOLY SHIT I'm turning 21 on the 14th! FINALLY. :D

Hellfire in my Veins
Posted 16 years agoBeen feeling quite apathetic towards this site and art in general for some reason. I always seem to loose the drive to create when I'm at home with my parents. But I'll be returning to Santa Cruz soon for the second session of summer class and I'll be doing two art classes so expect some actual work soon.
In the meantime, I'm going camping tomorrow with my parents and I won't be back till Thursday. Then back to college on Saturday. And thus the last cycle of school with commence. I find it rather bewildering that I'll be done with college and I'll have to face Real Life. If anyone has any tips on living on your own, please please please tell me, I've been under my parent's (overly) caring wing my whole life and though they keep lecturing me on having to live on my own, I've never really HAD to. I feel weird reaching out to people on the internet that I don't really know all that well, but there seem to be a lot of nice people around and I may need a place to stay in the next few years...
Sketch commissions are still open, 5 dorrah.
Hope everyone else is doing alright and having an awesome summer!

Music - Deliciously Stoney and Evil Doom and Sludge
Posted 16 years agoSo I know there are a good handful of furry metalheads as well as furry stoners, but I've yet to encounter many furries that listen to doom or sludge metal. It seems like a lot of people are turned off by the length and slowness of a lot of the songs, but I personally love both of those aspects of these genres, since you can just get so deep into a groove and allow the song to evolve over, say, fifteen minutes, as opposed to most 3-6 minute songs. So I will present to you a list of my favorites, and I suggest you guys check it out. I'll try to find some youtube links for samples, and if something sparks your interest I can send the album to you over AIM or upload it or something.
Acid Bath: Okay, these guys are pretty weird, since they're really all over the place in style, they can be kind of death metaly sometimes, or they'll switch to cleaner vocals occasionally. Good stuff though. I'm most fond of their album When The Kite String Pops. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjBwxXmNY0Q
ASVA: Doom metal by Trey Spruance (of Mr. Bungle fame) and the guys from Burning Witch? Can't go wrong there. Mostly instrumental and quite droney, this stuff is good to listen to in the middle of the night in the dark and blazed as fuck.
Blood of the Black Owl: Very atmospheric and grainy black/funeral doom. I think they have two albums out now, but I only have their first self titled one. I really really like Chet Scott's work on this project of his, another good one to listen to in the middle of the night, especially when it's raining out. Has a very... in-the-middle-of-the-woods feeling.
Bongzilla: How could I leave out Bongzilla. Good 'ol straightforward stoner metal, probably one of the more well know bands on this list. This video is fucking hilarious. Bongzilla fits very well with The Evil Dead. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gY7GeZWKknU
Boris: I actually only have one Boris album (Amplifier Worship), which I need to fix. This Japanese band is pretty eclectic with their styles. I haven't listened to enough of them to really say much else, but they're quite good.
Burning Witch: Definitely one of my favorite sludgey doom bands. Edgy 59 has some of the most raw and intense vocals around and with Stephen O'Malley on guitars this music just sucks you in. Very very heavy and somewhat painful to listen to (which is a good thing for me haha). I've listened to this song so many times, and I don't think I'll ever get tired of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yV-3QTJk658
Disembowelment: Death metal mixed with Doom. I actually find this band to be rather difficult to listen to, since they get really fucking slow sometimes. TRUE STORY: Their album Transcendence Into The Peripheral mixed with the music/gameplay of DefJam for the PS3 makes for an extremely hilarious acid trip. I seriously couldn't stop laughing for about an hour. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfgZBsljNis
Dot[.]: Japanese sludge which sadly happens to be rather obscure and difficult to find. I love this band, the mixture of ultra deep growls and harsh screeches is excellent and the riffs are so chunky. I wish I could find a YouTube link for them, because they fucking kick ass.
Down: Dood. All I should have to say about this band is: Phil Anselmo, Rex Brown (both of Pantera), and Jimmy Bower (of Eyehategod). Holy shit. Bury Me In Fucking Smoke: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRA3VgO3Vz0
Electric Wizard: One of the grandfathers of sludgey doom. These guys are phenomenal. If you're going to listen to sludge/doom metal, there's no way you can not listen to Electric Wizard. I'd say they, along with Sleep pretty much exemplify the smoother, grooving style of sludge (Black Sabbath anyone?), with vocals usually on the cleaner side. Their "opposite" would be a band like Eyehategod. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-n6gpM5pFk
Eyehategod: Another grandfather of sludge, these guys are much more harsh with tons of earsplitting feedback and a more frantic, punkish sound mixed with bluesy riffs. When I first heard them way back when I was just getting into metal I hated them, but now that I'm out of my rather narrow minded death metal only phase, they've grown on me so much. Probably one of my favorite sludge metal bands now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClMRYyVnD1s
Goatsnake: I've always liked them, but I recently just completely fell in love with their album Flower of Disease. One of Greg Anderson's (him and Stephen O'Malley from Sunn O))) are in like, every sludge band ever) bands. Very clean vocals, pretty easy to listen to compared to say, Burning Witch or Eyehategod. Arg, I love this band, they have such a strong groove and the vocals are pure awesome. Very bluesy and so fun to sing to while driving around, especially on hot days. For once a YouTube comment is actually legit: "makes you want to get trashed and drive your motorcycle through death valley with a shotgun strapped to your back" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqOoGBvJBK4
Khanate: Yet another O'Malley band and the complete opposite of Goatsnake. Ear piercing, headache inducing, painful, droney, depressing, makes you want to rip you face off. I love it. You will probably hate it. Every instrument including the vocals are doing their best to cause you pain and they all do it splendidly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNGwLTPEhyA
Kyuss: How could I leave out Kyuss? They pretty much made stoner metal/rock. With song names like "Jumbo Blimp Jumbo" and "Tangy Zizzle" they fucking rock out. So pleasing to listen to, makes me want to go and wander the desert and sing their songs. Fuck, I love all of their songs so much, I can't choose just one to put on here. Just go and listen to any of their albums.
Om: Such a simple mix of bass, drums, and vocals, but damn, this music is hypnotizing and beautiful, very much like Tibetan chanting. Much more mellow than most of the bands I've listed so far, very nice to listen to while working on art. Their albums only ever consist of a few songs, nearly all of the over ten minutes. If you ever have a chance to see them live, DO IT. Just... amazing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqTPJzTOYpE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfUgtv9Fl2E
Sleep: Delicious stoner metal. Sleep's Holy Mountain is an excellent record, rather bluesy with clean vocals. And if you have the endurance, you MUST listen to their song/album Dopesmoker. A brutal one hour and three minutes of pretty much just one riff, but the way it evolves and changes is great. Another good song for sitting and working on art. Plus the lyrics are about an race of people called the Weedians and their travels across the world. Win. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9ouIsiqdvA
Sludghammer: hahah I just had to put this here. My friend's band, with my boy Greg on drums. I've listened to them play so many times, it's insane. All of their stuff is pretty roughly recorded (either in their living room in Santa Cruz or in a garage in Portland) but it's still pretty damn good. http://www.myspace.com/neckdeepinquicksand
Sunn O))): Ah Sunn O))), the masters of droney doom. Very atmospheric, grinding, minimalistic, and long, I find them to be quite intense and I usually have to be in the right mood for them. Their song My Wall is my favorite. Best listened to in the dark with no distractions. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIR1KfKXH6s
Thergothon: Old school funeral doom from Finland. Grim, bleak, very slow, and churning. Another band I have to be in the right mood for. Not my favorite doom, but still notable.
Thorr's Hammer: Wow, you'd never guess a 17 year old girl was doing vocals for this doom band (ANOTHER O'Malley band lol). Very heavy and well... doomy. A short lived band, but damn good. After they broke up (a.k.a. Runhild the vocalist went back to Norway since she was an exchange student) Burning Witch was formed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYWGiNLbmhs
Weedeater: Stoney, similar to Bongzilla (since their bassist/vocalist happens to be in Bongzilla). I love their riffs, you can really rock out to this band. If you see them live, expect Dixie Dave to puke on himself at some point. Mankind is unkind man!/GOD LUCK AND GOOD SPEEEEED http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQkTQIN_5Fk
Witch: Their riffs are so fucking awesome. Mostly supernatural themed (they have a song about Rip Van Winkle haha) but sludgey nonetheless. In my opinion, their first album, Witch, is the best. Also, the album cover is genius. Very unique clean vocals. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5von-_FI0U
YOB: Last, but definitely not least, is YOB. I fucking love this band and listening to them earlier made me want to make this whole long ass list. All of their albums have been spot on and I really can't choose a favorite. I'm so happy that they got back together, and are releasing a new album in about a month. I MUST SEE THEM LIVE. This band is amazing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7Fj1dakJlc
If you have any suggestions for me, fire away! Damn, this list took forever for me to write up.

Collabs WHOA
Posted 16 years agoso I got way more responses than I expected and in my somewhat inebriated state, I wasn't thinking very deeply into the whole concept. I mean... we could do ANYTHING, there are so many possibilities for collaboration. And I'd so love to get to collaborate with everyone that commented, though I'll have to take only a few at a time or else I'll get overwhelmed.
But tell me peoples, what do you want to do? I mean, I have tons and tons of uncolored lineart, or we could pass sketches back and forth or I could color something of yours or well... anything really. So tell me what you're most interested in and let's figure some stuff out!
<3
Edit: Also, a heaping dose of cubensis soon, now that I'm stress and school-free. I'll try to draw some crazy shit, but you know how that goes.. sit down and stare at a tree and the next thing you know you're trying to swim out of the ground...

Collabs/Free Art?
Posted 16 years agoAnyone want to do some collaborations of some sort? I love that shit.
Also, today was my last day of school for the summer, so I'll take 2 free ball point pin ups. I'll do them right the fuck right now, but keep in mind I'm kinda tipsy and working on being drunk. READY GO.

Art and SCUBA and Commissions for Summer?
Posted 16 years agoDammit you people, I can't keep up with all these submissions. I have 634 that I'm slowly working through because I like to see everyone's art stuffs.
Anyways, this past week and this current week have both been hectic and stressful as fuck. Too many art projects, not enough time, and to top it off I went SCUBA diving on Sunday because I had to make up two dives. Not that diving is a BAD thing, but it just completely wore me out.
In fact, the two dives I did yesterday were some of the best. Dove at Monastery in Monterey, CA. So much awesome life there in the kelp forest and on the rocks. Tons of fish and nudibranchs and krill and everything. Being in a kelp forest and looking up is one of the coolest things ever. The only thing that really sucked was the fact that the water was a frigid 47 degrees Fahrenheit. But it was so worth it. Everyone, get SCUBA certified. Go. Now.
Once this next week is over, I'll only have one easy final to do and then SUMMER. I have no idea is anyone is interested at all, but I suppose I'll take some commissions for summer. I'll need to write up an actual commission journal, but here are some price ideas:
$6 pencil sketches, $8 badges, $10 for a pinup like this (http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2324370), $15 for a full colored thing.
What thinks ye?

Crisp, the savior, looked up from his wooden crucifix.
Posted 16 years agoI got an Emperor Scorpion. His name is Crisp the Savior the scorpion. He's pretty cool, I'll upload a picture of him shortly.
School is consuming most of my artistic time right now. I'm currently working on two large (around 45"x42") oil paintings for my final. Also, we're going to be pouring bronze for my foundry class on Tuesday and then I will have quite a bit of work to do before my piece is completed. I'm making a bell which will hopefully sound alright.
I still need to fucking send
fishyboner the picture I did for her, but I suck ass and need to get stamps and the right size envelope since I did it on weird sized paper. Also, if anyone else wants me to send them some art I did for them, tell me and I'll do it all in one go.
That's about it, keeping myself busy. Going SCUBA diving on the 30th I think. Shit, I'm almost done with my third year of college. The thought of graduating next year makes me nervous.
He looked to the sky to see the eyes of his father. They were, however, not there. “Fathere” said Crisp, the savior. “Fathere, whye haste thoue forsakene mee?”
“Causee you’ree ae stucke uppe douchee hippiee slobbe whoe forcesse anne opinionne onne peoplee. You’ree anne opinionatede freake whoe walkede arounde tellingge peoplee howe toe livee theire wholee livese ande neverre reallye contributee anythingge toe societye.”

4/21 The Day After
Posted 16 years agoWell, let me start with the weekend actually. Went on four SCUBA dives, 2 on Saturday, two on Sunday, all in the beautiful but cold waters of Monterey, CA. Tons of beautiful inverts (bat stars, brittle stars, sun stars!, nudibranchs, snails, and on and on) and lots of cool fish as well. On Sunday, we did a boat dive at this place called Eric's Pinnacle, an amazing underwater rock spire, and I hit my lowest dive at 59 feet. Whoo! Then later that day we did a night dive which was one of the most intense things I've ever done. There's a fat algal bloom going on here right now, which made visibility at about one inch. So you're just swimming along, nearly hugging your buddy, your nose right up next to the sand at the bottom because you can barely see anything. Super disorientating, but even more fun. I really wish I could take all you awesome people down into the ocean with me, because it is one of the most amazing things ever. It's like watching Planet Earth, but ten times better.
After that, I got home completely exhausted at around 11 p.m. and hung out with my housemate and his visiting friends, waiting for 12:00. And at 12, well, of course we all lit up our own joints and then passed around six more. And then I passed the fuck out, woke up, went to class, smoked a blunt, went to my second class, then headed out for the Porter Meadow. Now, you may or may not know, but UC Santa Cruz is know for a pretty fat 4/20 celebration. Thousands of people hang out in the meadow and it's an event to see. In fact, I found a video of it here: http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?se.....amp;id=6767644
Here, this video I found on youtube is even better: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AeVvqUT_0KE
So I hung out there for 4:20 and left shortly after. There were all sorts of people there (weed is universal!), even some crazy ass Jesus dick-suckers holding signs that said things like "Jesus' blood washes away sins" and "You're on the highway to hell." Of course, everyone just laughed at them. Then, got home, took a nap, frantically/stonily worked on my 4/20 exchange pic and then passed out again. Hope everyone else had an awesome day. Back to work though, since I have a midterm on Wednesday and several art projects to do.
P.S. Art trades anyone?

Continuing
Posted 16 years agoMy housemate fucks his girlfriend. She is annoyingly loud and has brought a lot of complications between friends with her. So I stand outside their door and smash bottles with a hammer. And shards of glass cut my hand slightly.
My other housemate has a Uromastyx. It is cute.
I am taking Intermediate Painting and Foundry this quarter and I have a lot of work, but it is good.
I am currently obsessed with the song Easy Greasy by Goatsnake and Greg got me obsessed with Sunn O)))'s My Wall.
Anyone looking for an art trade? Though I am busy, I feel like I'm on a roll with art.
That's about it.

Spring Break a'comin' (Portland trip?)
Posted 16 years agoThing's I learned/did the past quarter (which started in January):
- woodworking, using power tools in the woodshop
- basic SCUBA (one of the best things ever), learned what it's like to dive in the cold ass, but beautiful, waters of Monterey Bay
- electric arc welding, whee molten steel!
- not to trust menus that claim an item is vegan. I'm severely allergic to milk and not actually vegan, but eating vegan at restaurants is the safest way for me. I ordered coconut curry at the Santa Cruz Diner only to find that they put milk in their coconut milk. Bullshit I say
- as much as I hated my writing class, I got better at writing research papers
- I now understand a lot of the art of the 20th century, since I took a history of art class on Surrealism to Postmodernism. In fact, I should be studying for that now, since I have 79 slides to memorize and several concepts I still don't quite have a strong grasp on. Feminist art... XD
Next quarter will see much more art from me, since I'll be taking Intermediate Painting and Foundry. Though the only problem is that it's impossible to scan works on, since I generally paint on pretty large canvasses and uh... it's hard to scan 3D works.
SPRING BREAK, 2 MORE DAYSSSSSSSSSS
I will be getting shitfaced on St. Pattie's Day and then I'm planning on heading up to Portland, Oregon with m'boy Greg to visit some people. Greg will mostly be recording music with said people, and even though they're my friends, I won't have much to do while they're recording. Anyone live up there and want to hang out?
Anyways, nose to the grindstone, gotta get those slides in my head.

Stuff and things and free art
Posted 16 years agoMan, I've been so out of it for this whole quarter. Just... so much shit to do with two writing based classes, a sculpture class (and sculpture is probably my weakest medium) and Beginning SCUBA (which has been kicking my ass). Hopefully next quarter will be more art focused, though I still have two General Education classes to do.
I've been procrastinating all day... I really should be writing an essay, which I finally sat down and started an hour ago, only to be distracted with this. So... I will take THREE free pencil pinup sketches. Just cause. There is a trick though... You have to choose a self-portrait by either Egon Schiele or Francis Bacon, since that's what I'm writing my essay on and I've been staring at their works for so long, and tell me something interesting about it (and not just, I like it or it has nice colors or something lame like that). Don't know who they are? Time to learn some art history! Use Wiki or something.

FC
Posted 16 years agois not a go. I was planning on it, but this month turned out to be one of the most hectic and stressful months of college I've ever had, funds are low, and I really just don't have time. I live only about an hour from San Jose though, so it's pretty disappointing to not be able to go. Oh well, there's always next year.
And arggggg I'm still so swamped, I haven't even had time to really check my messages here, let alone sit down and do some personal art. I'll finally be settled in soon, and THEN I can actually get some work done. Bleh. And I'm getting a horrible coughing cold. Great Job.

What makes good art?
Posted 17 years agoSo I was just rejected from the Anthro Sketch Exchange on lj and it got me thinking (and somewhat disgruntled). Answer me this unanswerable question: What makes good art?
I've found that the furry community is much more "pin-up" or illustration based. There are some painterly folks out there. This makes sense, since people have their personal characters and whatnot that they want portrayed in a simple, easy to look at manner. There is no such thing as abstract furry art. Surrealism is pushing it. And then there is your level of popularity/how many people watch you. I'd say that I am at the "unpopular" level.
Which brings me to the thought: do you create art to be well known or do you make art because you can? I'd guess that most people would answer with the latter, but isn't that desire for recognition lurking about in the back of your head? Pageviews and watches...
Skipping to another subject, let's compare the furry art community and style to the outside world of art. What makes your art good enough to be in a museum, say... the SFMOMA (or MOMA for you east-coasters)? Or what can you do to get your art to sell for millions of dollars? If any furry artist has sold something at more than $100,000, please alert me. What makes artists like Kiki Smith and Jeff Koons so popular?
There are so many questions to be asked and no easy way of explaining them. Sometimes I get depressed with this little niche that I feel like I've sunk into. If I change my furry style to one that is more abstract and less 'pin-up' based, people seem to care less. But if I introduce furry art into my 'fine' art it makes it... 'kitschy' or 'fandomy' or something that just isn't as accepted.
Please please please, let me know your thoughts.
Edit: if you're bored and want to look at art that's going on in the world outside of TEH FURRY, you should check out this site: http://www.pbs.org/art21/artists/index.html
