But no really, I probably will spend this money on food. Just letting people know that I'll be adding a Buy-A-Coffee link on my profile from now on, just in case~ I like dropping a few bucks in other artists' funds from time to time, so I thought I might as well have one on my own.
Consider it a tip jar for commissions, too~ :3 Not necessary, but just cuz~

back from Generate! also inktober poll!
Posted 9 years agoI have gone through battle and am thoroughly sore EVERYWHERE but mostly my drawing hand.
I can't hold a pen right now, so I'm taking a little time to recuperate XD I did manage to successfully finish my 24 page comic in 24 hours, though it's not as polished as I wanted it to be. gonna go back and fix it before posting it here, but hopefully y'all like it as much as I do ;u;
Quick poll for yall though! I want to participate in inktober to improve on my traditional art. I've seen a lot of prompts lists, as well as some people just doing requested themes... what do y'all think?
There's also kinktober XD that's tempting too.
are you doing inktober? Which prompts are you using?

Posted 9 years agoMy school is doing a big event today called Generate, which is a 24 hour challenge that keeps our souls in a box and only releases us upon death.
but really, I'm super excited! My major has its own challenge, like everyone else, and I'll need to create an original black and white comic.... 24 pages.
Psh, 24 pages in 24 hours? No sweat. I think.
So yeah. wish me luck. XD I'm gonna be the one wearing comfy pants and bringing a sleepingbag. I did a 24 hour contest at my last school, though it was in animation, and fuuuuckkk, I learned some tricks from it.
Namely, take breaks. Even if it buys you time, TAKE BREAKS. otherwise your work goes gobbledy gook and you get hella sick.
at least there's free food!
So yeah, wish me luck~ :D I'm not sure if I'll be allowed to post progress, but if I can, check my twitter~ https://twitter.com/Salkitten

Posted 9 years agoI'm so tired
so fecking tired @ - @ and my day sure aint done. I ordered a venti. I NEVER order a venti.
Anyway, I've got two assignments basically due tonight. A script that's finished, but I have to finish character designs and environment designs, then I've got a presentation tomorrow in another class about a sequence analysis.
Annnd I've got commissions to do. -looks at commissioners and mouths 'im sorry' softly'
Mostly I had no idea that the script was due today instead of thursday. The syllabus was changed at the beginning of the quarter annnd I forgot. @ - @ I'm a putz.
Anyway, chicken defrosting in the fridge, some tunes ready to go, and I'm going to saddle up for some work while dinner cooks. Cheapo chicken parm anyone?
Tomorrow I have a meeting with a tattoo artist to see what she thinks about my tat idea~ I'm nervous because I'm not sure if I can afford it yet, but we're gonna see!
I'm also nervous because this is a fairly big piece for my first XD I'm gonna ask what she thinks of that too.
Anyway, I might stream later ;u; Or I'll just flop over and continue normal work until I pass out. idk. depends on how much focus I have.

Describe my art?
Posted 9 years agoPlease y'all, I need to ask a stupid favor XD One of my classes wants me to do a one-page comic 'deconstruction' of my work. Basically, what my subjects are, what I want to do with my art, what my inspirations are... all wrapped up somehow in a single page. One of the suggestions for brainstorming is to come up with a description of my art. Unfortunately, I'm wedged so far up my own art-hole that I can't see it very objectively. Care to lend a hand? How would you describe my work?
I appreciate it ;u; I'm stumped on this project so far.

Good news everyone!
Posted 9 years agoI took bitty baby kitten to the vet today and he is FIV and feline leukemia free! That's so awesome, especially because his background as a feral kitten was... well, it made it less likely. He got his first round of shots and the vet and I are super proud of how well he handled it~ Such a good boy c:
He got his dewormer too, so his stomach upsets should lessen soon. Otherwise he's in great shape and putting on a ton of weight~
My first day of class went great, though I was almost late getting there @ u @; Had to run up to the store to get kitten milk... that I may not need anymore. Ah well! He's gonna be starting on wet kitten food again soon~
Class is going to be intense. We had a full book to read before Wednesday 83 Hahahaaaa wish me luck
I'm half done and it's not super long but jesus. grad classes don't fuck around. First project is due monday too.
I'm super excited to start tomorrow's classes too, so wish me luck there!
Gonna go run some errands and then come back to work on commissions c: Pidge out!

School starts TOMORROW!
Posted 9 years agoTomorrow I start life at SCAD and I can't fecking wait :3 Orientation blew my mind away. Sure, I was ridiculously sleepy the entire time, but god damn. GODDAMN. It was amazing all the same.
Things I learned:
1. There are workshops all the time that are basically surrogate classes to teach you new skills/techniques/what have you and they're not major exclusive. This means I'm totally going to hop over to the animation and illustration departments sometimes :3
2. The library is amazing with an astounding graphic novels section as well as subscriptions to a fuckton of art magazines. :D
3. Apparently there are only 3 incoming graduates this quarter (including me) to the sequential art department! And only 8 in the whole campus. Total. This graduate program is super picky about who it lets in, so I'm fucking flattered. :D
4. Celebs from the art world come in all the time like editors for some pretty fecking amazing comic publishers, and grad students usually get pushed forward first to make introductions!
5. I'll be in grad/undergrad mixed classes which is AWESOME because I'll get to meet a bunch of different, brilliant, creative people~
6. The bookstore is amazing. They sell fucking tablets there. :I
7. apparently the graduate thesis is only 16 page minimum of essay and 24 pages of comic. Well.
8. I'm going to be working (the job at the production lab) on the same floor as my classes and the lab I'm going to be in is pretty much restricted use to the comics department. :3c
9. I just can't stop grinning because after five years of wanting to go here I'll finally be here.
I'm sure there's other stuff but I'm just
really excited
So. :D
Today I'm going to focus on wrapping up outstanding commissions~ And squirming because I can't wait for tomorrow!

YAY! Job Get!
Posted 9 years agoI got the job! :3 I'll be working at my college as a production lab assistant. It's not the best paying job, but it works out well for me! I'll still have to do commissions but with extra downtime, that wont be so much of an issue c: Not having to work in food service is going to be BOSS.
So yeah, ohhhh my goodness <3 I'm so excited~ I probably wont be able to start for a few weeks because there are forms I have to fill out with the school and they're bound to be a little crazy at first, but I'm so excited, for reals~
Now to just try not to go insane with the amount of stuff I have to order for classes without having my school refund yet XD Oh jeez.
Also surprise! I have 'summer homework' in one of my classes and I can't find the assignment anywhere. Just the due date. @ - @
Oh boy. failing before I even started. this is gonna be harder than I thought!

Wish me Luck!
Posted 9 years agoPhew, I slept so badly because I was nervous XD Tonight I'll probably sleep like a rock. I've got an interview at 2 for a job at my school, which would be optimal for me in soooo many ways. Gosh, I hope I don't fuck everything up XD
I'd be an assistant at one of the art labs, and one of the requirements was a knowledge of bookbinding.... which I have. SO. So far they think my resume qualifies me, and now I just have to try to not make a fool of myself. WHY IS THIS SO TERRIFYING.
-writes on arm like Mulan- Don't. Be. Annoying.
But for reals, I'm very excited~ This job would possibly allow me to work on projects (or even commissions!) at campus and not have such a commute. My alternative is going back to food service and bartending... which I'd just as well rather not.
So wish me luck! I couldn't sleep even a bit, so I think after the interview I'll come home and pass out XD

Okay, elaboration.
Posted 9 years agoSo, yesterday I freaked out because I was bitten by a stray cat.
I want to clarify a few things off the bat:
Yes. I was really stupid.
Yes, I should have been wearing gloves!
Yes, I should have let professionals handle it.
Yes, I fucked up.
Trust me, lesson learned. It took some serious self-criticism to realize just how badly I fucked up. That being said, I'm trying to make it right. I'm ordering a live trap be placed by my county's feral cat program. I tried to take the kitten to a no-kill but they're full, and the other shelter told me that he's too young to be taken because they dont have the manpower to bottlefeed him. The momma cat has moved her babies and I honestly dont know where they are. Aside from that, momma cat is so thin that the kitten I managed to catch was extremely malnourished.
How I'm going to make this right: I'll bottlefeed the baby and wean him. He's at 4 weeks so he's right on the cusp of weaning, so I'm using kitten replacement milk. I've researched how much he needs and he's getting energy back. Yesterday he was honestly too exhausted to do anything but eat and sleep.
This way momma cat only has two babies to feed and once I get the live trap I'll hopefully be able to take her to the catch, neuter, release program for my county. This way the feral cat problem in my apartments gets addressed and doesn't spread.
As for baby, he's going to at least be in my care, quarantined, and I'm going to keep an eye on him. While he wasn't the kitten that bit me, I don't think it's very possible that one kitten would have rabies and not the others in the litter. Either way, tomorrow i'll be seeking medical care from my county health department and at least get antibiotics and a tetanus shot. I'll be honest with the doctor about the possibility of rabies but it's ultimately very rare. Being uninsured currently, it does make things more difficult.
So. Yesterday I was mostly freaking out because I fucked up. There wasn't really any reliable information on the web, my friends and family were saying different things, and I just started panicking. Today the bite is not painful to extend and doesn't look particularly inflamed.
I do have experience fostering and bottlefeeding kittens, so I trust I can at least do this right. I did fuck up, but I'm doing my best to make it better.
Let this be a cautionary tale: If you see a momma cat and her kittens, dont try to catch them. Call your county animal control, see if they have a catch and release program, and put out food and water for the momma.
And if you do have to catch a stray cat... do yourself a favor and wear gloves. -n-

Posted 9 years agoHey everyone! I want to make a daddy character, as in gay culture daddy XD Realized I didn't have one and I may want to use one in an upcoming comic.
I wanted to brainstorm and I thought I'd ask you guys for a quick poll!
What species?
What kind of daddy?
What special trait?
Slight description?
I'll browse and peruse and probably mix and match, so let me know what you think c:

Things I've learned about living alone.
Posted 9 years agoI've now lived alone for a little over a month, and after living with a roommate for five years (and parents, before that), I think it's worth mentioning some of the things I've learned in this formative month of independence. XD
1. A roll of toilet paper goes a long way.
2. Similarly, the lack of extra dishes and extra trash is extraordinary. I can go three or four days before I need to even think about taking out the trash, and the dishes get put in the dishwasher pretty much as soon as they happen.
3. It is kind of lonely learning how to cook for one person. However, I can cook exactly what I know I'll like and hey! extras left over!
4. If there's a mess, I know it's my fault. It's me or the cats, pretty much! This means a lot, as I used to have to clean up extraneous mess constantly.
5. If something exciting happens, I can't just turn to my roommate and tell her. However, I talk to the cats a lot and also call up my folks more. c:
6. Unfortunately, no more outings with my roomie, but those had tapered off a lot by the time I moved out. I miss it, but in time I'll make friends at school that I can go out with~ Plus, in the mean time I'm learning how to go out on my own and have fun~ People stare at you funny when you go to the mall alone, but I dont mind~
7. MY FOOD DOESNT GET EATEN! AHH! I can buy something and know exactly how much is left ;u; The glory!
8. My roomie used to cook a lot for me. Now that she's not, though, I have to take responsibility for myself and cook! Plus, I can choose healthier options c:
9. I can leave literally anything sitting out. Giant bad dragon toys everywhere. (jk, but really)
10. Sound curfew? What's that? Though I'm not super loud because my upstairs neighbors wouldn't like me much!
11. tbh I do get lonely sometimes. not as much as I thought I would, but... I can't deny I miss someone being here.
12. Plus, paying the full portion of bills. ech.
13. But I can draw furry porn without closing my door :D And the bathroom door rarely closes.
So what are your roomie stories? Do you prefer living with people or alone? Me? I think being alone suits me fine. c:

You know what makes me happy?
Posted 9 years agoOn a side note, what makes me happy is sipping some iced green tea after successfully cooking delicious supper, two meals in the fridge for when I'm too art-distracted to cook, and my entire kitchen is CLEAN.
But.
What also makes me happy and the reason I want to write:
Seeing people's transition stories ;u; I love seeing all my trans friends on their journeys, and even just a passerby who is celebrating their progress... It makes me so unbelievably proud of them. Like, you go girl/boy, you rock that decision and rock your body and I believe in you!
I still feel like somewhere in the future, I'll either go on hormones or have top surgery at least. I dont think I'll ever do the complete bottom surgery... and I'm so nervous of even suggesting hormones to myself because the idea of growing a beard isn't always appealing to me (sometimes it really is! And sometimes... not so much)
Does anyone else feel really confused with their gender identity? I thought I was a boy. I thought I was a man. I thought I was a girl, or a woman. I dont know who I feel like. Sure, my biology is there to kick my butt, but I get a little wistful and envious (in the best possible way) of all my friends who have stuck to their path and are so certain they're living by their own internal image. Me? Hell. If I had my choice I'd be an androgynous being with the ability to throw on masculinity and femininity when the situation occurs. I can't help it, and it makes me feel like a faker. One day I'll want to dress up and wear makeup and I feel perfectly at peace, and others I just want to embrace my dude side and be stubbly and hunky.
I just dont know. Eventually I'll get some therapy specifically for this long-term problem. I've been dealing with this wishywashy stuff since I was 13.
BUT.
Enough about me.
This goes out to all my trans friends and peoples: I'm so proud of you.
You're awesome for living the way you want. Even if you're not transitioning yet, or aren't yet out about it, you've realized something important about yourself and taken a stride toward your identity. For those transitioning, I wish you the best of luck that I can! Every day I know you're seeing those changes, building that confidence, and taking that step forward. Good for you~ I hope that you step into a comfortable skin and live life to the fullest!

Pidge Tips for Art!
Posted 9 years agoOn the journey to arthood, there are many tips and tricks that you'll pick up to help you out. Some are resources, some are just good rules of thumb, but all of them are valuable tools in your artistic toolbox~ I'm listing a few of my favorite, but if you have more to add then please do so in the comments! Whether you're just starting to draw or you're a seasoned veteran, some of these tips are bound to be helpful, or at least relatable~ Let's go!
On Drawing:
1. thumbnails are great ways to work quick poses to see how the composition will look in the final piece, WITHOUT wasting a lot of time on detailing.
2. Walking away from a sketch and coming back to it after an hour will allow you to see if with a new perspective. This way, you can fix mistakes before you get too far into your work.
3. For every full drawing you do, try to do ten sketches!
4. It's never too late to do something over. Even if it's a pain in the ass, learning from your mistakes is invaluable.
5. You can do color and lighting thumbnails too! These will help you get a good idea of the values before you get too far in.
6. If you're going to try something you're not sure will work, save an alternative file for your piece. Something like Art1.png -> Art2.png lets you have saved steps backwards. Also very important to do before you flatten layers.
7. Similarly, if you're not sure if your sketch will work out and you want to redraw some of it, copy the layer and hide it in case you want to go back to it.
8. Finding it difficult to draw a particular curved line? Draw it on a layer separate from your main lineart and then free transform it into place.
9. You can also draw things like markings or patterns with linework on a separate layer, and make a group for your inking layers. This lets you recolor lines easily, and also select areas faster.
10. Selection source is your friend, particularly in sai!
11. sketching on a non-white canvas helps ease eye strain and blank-canvas-syndrome.
12. Referencing is not cheating. Just don't trace, copy someone's work exactly or hijack a character's design. But if you're trying to draw a shoe, go look up pictures of shoes!
13. Color Picking is also okay, but it's not a good substitute for learning color theory.
14. Working on a larger canvas and then scaling down allows for less pixelation and scraggly linework. Try working on a 3000x3000 canvas and see what I mean!
15. If you're pushing down so hard on your tablet pen that your hand hurts, change your stabilizer and pen sensitivity.
16. Carry a sketchbook with you at all times if you can for ideas, spur-of-the-moment record and notes.
17. Pinterest has a shitton of awesome art inspirations.
18. Flip your canvas horizontally. a lot.
I may add more to this list later on~ Feel free to add your tips down below, or links to useful references! c:

Howdy Hey~
Posted 9 years agoGood afternoon everyone! Hope all of you are doing great c:
Just letting everyone know that I'm getting back on the wagon with Patreon, commissions and the whole kaboodle. I've been a little too shy and pressed for time to stream, particularly since my second monitor was stolen... Makes me nervous to not have the extra monitor that isn't streamed for chats and whatnot. All the same, I'll try to stream soon!
I will be going out of town briefly next week though!~ c: I've been craving the ocean for a few months now and I'm finally going to take a couple of days to go to Savannah. Nothing super fancy, really, but I'm glad that I can get this small, cheap day-trip in before school starts.
Speaking of, school starts for me in September. I'm trying to find a job with the school itself, but barring that I might need to do commissions exclusively to survive. A full load of graduate classes and not very much refund money means that I've still got to pay rent and bills the old fashioned way: with dicks.
As such, my prices are liable to rise a bit. I'm sorry for this, and I'll try to offer cheap commissions like colored sketches in between. I never want to become the kind of artist who is never accessible.
Thanks everyone for being so chill~ I'll catch y'all on the flip side!

Update: second move is complete!
Posted 9 years agoPhew! I'm so glad to finally write those words. The second move is finally complete, with internet installed today and hot water/electric all working. The first portion of the move was done Monday with the moving company, and the second portion was on Tuesday with closing out everything and doing a majority of the unpacking on Wednesday so that bugs couldn't have time to get all up in everything. SO! I now have a home.
Man.
To recap, I moved out of Tennessee May 27th, came to Atlanta, got hit with the bug problem and had to vacate basically on the 8th because of the fuckton of roaches and the poison. I got ill from the poison fumes, had to move my cats and fish to foff's house and spend a very long time with him due to unlivable conditions. Finally, FINALLY, I'm able to stretch out on my bed and not flinch away as a roach crawls over the wall.
What a nightmare.
But this is perfect timing! My mom is coming down from Tennessee to visit me for her birthday this weekend, and I'm so excited~ I've missed my friends and family so much. It's been hard to be so stoic, especially because the only people I really know down here are my boyfriend, his friend OJ and, like... his mom. Lonely doesn't even begin to cover how I felt the last month.
BUT I'm back! I'll be able to draw again (I think I've drawn all of three things since the move) and I'll be able to work again real soon. All that's left is a few more boxes, and a basic blessing I need to do on the house.
Thanks everyone for your support and patience ;u; Things seem to finally be looking up!

Sal and the No-Good Very Bad Move [GOFUNDME]
Posted 9 years agoHey everyone. I'm still working on owed commissions, but recent issues with my move have made the last three weeks very difficult to work in. I've opened up a GoFundMe if anyone feels like they're able to help! Hopefully real soon I can start making a home and being open for work once again.
Thank you in advance for everyone's support and well-wishes! Y'all are amazing.
https://www.gofundme.com/2eb895z8
Hi! I'm Sal, and at the end of June I set out to move from Tennessee to the big city of Atlanta, GA to pursue my dreams of graduate school. After being accepted to my dream school, SCAD, I saved up to make the move on my own, and I wanted to be as independent as possible.
However, bad things started happening the first day at the new apartment. Roaches began popping out of every corner, saying hello in abundence. Even though the apartment managers have sent out exterminators for the last three weeks and even did a complete 'clean-out' of the unit, the roaches are still around. These have kept me from living in this home, instead making me take my pets to my boyfriend's home, an hour and a half away. Being unable to cook, unpack, and work have taken a toll on my finances, as well as cause many unexpected costs.
In addition, the fumes of the poison used has made me repeatedly sick. And, to make matters worse, I was robbed in the two-day span I was gone for the pest control clean-out. When it rains, it pours.
The apartments (which will remain unspecified) are moving me into a new unit that is bug-free on Monday, but I have to front the moving cost to later be reimbursed through my rent, and I'll also have to transfer electric, internet (which I need for work), and gas utilities to the new unit. I don't know how long this ordeal will keep me out of reliable work.
I wanted to be independent for this move, but I've gratefully accepted the help of my boyfriend and his family for giving me a place to stay that is safe until I'm moved into the new unit. I'm grateful as well for the efforts of the apartment manager for finding me a new place to move quickly.
I hate to ask for more help, but I'm worried at this point about the impact of this ordeal, financially.
I know some friends and family have asked how they can help, and all I can really ask for is your good thoughts and any little bit you can afford until I can get settled. This has been a rough time, but I'm really blessed to have the encouragement and support that I do.
Thank you so much. <3
