State of the Tiger - 3/29/2012
Posted 13 years agoI posted this on FaceBook yesterday, but, hell, it needs to go here, too:
This was going to be a post about where my head is currently. In fact, it still is, but I'm going to use it as my soap box to address something, too.
I grew up in Kankakee. It's a small city to begin with, and is even smaller when you're related to or your family knows half of the people there -- literally. Because of this, there was a lot of social pressure for me to do well and bring honor and pride to my family. I'm a Nelson; I take pride in that fact alone. My grandmother was a talented painter and I have several members of my family who have served in the various branches of the armed forces, either currently or in the past. So, there's a lot riding on my Family's name.
This is important to what I'm about to tell you. Several years ago, when I dated and subsequently had my first break-up, I plunged into what I now realize was depression. My grades fell and I struggled to keep up with my classwork. Where I once was in direct competition for the honor of being my Senior Class's Valedictorian, I dropped to being 9th in my class. Still in the top 5%, but still. My mother threatened to send me away to the Mental Ward at Riverside Hospital. This thought terrified me because of the stigma associated with it. Being admitted to the Mental Ward at a hospital would ruin any chances of having a decent future, I thought. So, through the support of my friends (mostly Kristina Beigh, Sarah Thomas, Kyle Hines, Nina Houston, and Derek Beigh), I got through it.
In 2006, when I had creditors calling constantly and stressing me out, I contemplated suicide. Killing myself would be the easy answer to a lot of problems. I had some very good friends and my boyfriend at the time (all of who are still friends with me today) pull me out of that, too.
Why am I telling you this? Wednesday morning, I sought counseling at the Ben Gordon Center. Monday morning, I hit a very hard, very tangible mental wall. I started having suicidal thoughts again and conveyed this to Brit. We talked about things (money was the straw that broke the camel's back) and I managed to stumble my way to work, though I honestly didn't want to be there. Tuesday was similar. No suicidal thoughts, but I basically stayed in the office, secluded from everyone with the exception of doing my required walks and bag checks. I cried off and on that night, many times for no discernible reason. During the counseling session, I was diagnosed with situational depression. I won't be in a state of constant "blah", for lack of better words, but it will come and go as Life rears its ugly head. I was provided several holistic treatment options (B-vitamins, spicy food, and socialization being ones I think will help me). And, honestly, after spending a little over an hour talking with a counselor, I did feel better. I still have a lot of issues to work out that deal directly with my fear of loss and abandonment, but I'm taking steps to rectify them.
So, about that soap box. There are multple points that I want to stress:
1. Black people. Stop telling your community members that they're going to hell or that they'll ruin their futures by seeking mental help. I honestly should have sought help a long time ago, but I didn't because of the attached stigmas. You want to do something to help? Find resources in your community. Whether it be through local health services, churches, or whatever, find safe places that ensure confidentiality. Gossip does nothing but further the hurt for the person who is dealing with issues.
2. If you have ANY thoughts of harming yourself, find a local mental health clinic and make a point of talking to them. In lieu of that, check this website (http://suicideprevention.wikia.com/wiki/USA) and reach out to someone. I lost a role model and one of my best friends to suicide. I know firsthand what the impact is. Those wounds still hurt.
3. Don't be ashamed to ask for help. I'm stubborn and generally pretty strong. When I break, it causes a great deal of mental damage. Talk to someone. Journal. Pray to your deity of choice. Write to PostSecret (http://www.postsecret.com/). Whatever you do, don't hold it in.
4. It gets better. Seriously. It's not always easy and the solutions are rarely immediate, but things do get better.

Tigers in the News

From: The Daily Journal (http://m.daily-journal.com/dailyjou.....l=true#display) in Kankakee
If there's one message Milan Nelson sought to promote through the Rainbow Alliance she founded earlier this year at Kankakee Community College, it was this:
"Just be awesome to each other."
But digging deeper, one finds a greater motivation.
Nelson, 25, is a lesbian. When she came out at age 18, then a senior at Kankakee High School, Nelson endured the typical abuses. Tampons stuffed into the gas tank door. Eggs broken on her car.
With the support of an older co-worker who had already come out as gay, Nelson said she decided to not be alone.
"I did a lot of soul-searching and I thought, 'yeah, I'm OK with this,'" she recently recalled. "I'm comfortable with who I am."
And now, a growing number of students in the area's three major post-secondary institutions are joining Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT)-friendly groups, both official and unofficial, and are making similar decisions.
"It just makes you feel that you're more accepted," said Carrie Parks, a 24-year-old student at Governors State University. "That you're not the only one."
The Gay Straight Alliance at GSU was founded last month by Eric Vironet, a master's degree student in social work, who said he was struck by the proliferation of homophobic comments he heard around campus and in class.
A GSA, as gay/straight alliances are commonly referred to, would help support the gay community and educate the rest, Vironet thought.
"It's empowering to not live in isolation or fear to be yourself," he said.
Perhaps unexpectedly, the battle for acceptance has been waged by gay students at Olivet Nazarene University, which does not support homosexuality.
Earlier this year, a small group of gay Olivet students outed themselves in an article published in the school's online newspaper, GlimmerGlass.
"We started to see a mobilization of the student body that we hadn't seen before," said Brett Carmouche, who was one of the students profiled in the article and has since graduated and moved away.
But that momentum -- described by other students at the time as three years in the making -- soon came apart.
More than half of the 10 to 15 gay students and their straight "allies" graduated this year, said one student, who asked to remain anonymous because she is completing her senior year. Several other transferred away from Olivet.
What was once an "unofficial" gay and straight alliance has since disbanded.
"This year I don't feel as supported," the student, a lesbian, said. "Since there's no group, there isn't much you can do to meet other people."
Olivet officials declined a request for an interview, saying through a spokesperson, that they did not feel an interview "could adequately convey the nuances of where we stand."
In a prepared statement, the school said its policy is to "affirm the Biblical teaching that sexual intimacies are to be shared as God's gift within the context of a committed marriage relationship between and man and woman, and that any form of sexual promiscuity, including homosexual acts, contradicts both Scripture and God's plan for us.
"University faculty and staff are willing to talk about any of the lifestyle expectations with students in a way that is open and respectful."
Rick Garcia, a longtime gay rights activist in Chicago, said gay alliance groups are growing throughout the state.
"One of the strongest political tools we have is coming out," Garcia said. "If you're out, the institutions have to respond to it, and hopefully they respond in a positive way."
Alliance and support groups have two goals, he said: "To affirm the students there, but also to provide safety for those students."
National statistics suggests the need is great.
Almost 9 out of 10 students from grades 6 to 12 hear the word "gay" used in a negative way, according to a 2009 National School Climate Survey conducted by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network.
More than 80 percent of students said they were verbally harassed at school because of their sexual orientation. Forty percent were physically harassed.
"High school can either be the best four years of your life, or the worst four years of your life," said Amanda Hays, 25, an officer with KCC's Rainbow Alliance.
Hays, who is straight, said witnessing the abuse her gay friend in high school endured, inspired her to educate herself and others.
Jonathon Bacon, 27, co-president of the Alliance (Nelson has since left the college and lives in Bolingbrook), said discrimination was also part of his coming out.
So was grieving and moving forward.
"The world is a cold place sometimes," he said. "And that's another reason why we have our group.
"Our group is about hope, love and understanding."

Still Alive
Posted 14 years agoI'm still around.
My day (night?) job is just kicking my tail up and down. Mostly in graphics projects, but I can't post those here, unfortunately. =/ Otherwise, I'd have a -ton- of material to post.
What work has done for me, though, is re-emphasize that while I, quite frankly, suck as an artist, I'm damn good at desktop publishing/layouts, photography, and image editing.
What I -will- be able to post soon is shots from a trip I'm going to take down the Illinois section of Route 66 in a few weeks. Midwest Furfest's theme this year is Rt. 66, and I'm planning on selling a few prints. Hell, if I can get my drawing butt in gear, I may even eke out a digital piece using a photo. I have concept art running around in my brain, at least. We'll see.

A Question...
Posted 14 years agoDangerous Eyes Designs is what I go by for artwork, but we also know that it's not exactly a positive name... So, I've been thinking about changing the name for my art face. I have a logo already, so I need a name. Here's a couple of ideas I have, but I'm curious what you, the public, thinks about them:
- Winged Stripey Cat Art
- Flying Tiger Art
- Winged Tiger Art
The reason I'm asking is I'm seriously thinking about selling some of the leatherwork at MFF if I can get my act together to "mass produce" quality products. I need to also find (or make) a stencil that's a small crest with one of the letters G, H, R, and S in the middle of them. You can guess why. ;)

One Year
Posted 14 years agoThis past weekend, I spent my 1st anniversary with my beautiful partner, Kitten, in St. Louis and Kansas City. We saw and met new and old friends, went to the zoo, and just had a grand old time.
However, this year has been spent relearning about love and myself, and I can honestly say it's been good for me. Here's to many more years together of learning more about ourselves and love!
...As a related note, I will NOT be in attendance at RCFM this year. Have fun at the con and rock it out.

That Sex MeMe going around... [Mature]
Posted 14 years agoResponses Cross-Posted from LJ, so some answers may not apply for here.
Because I told Spectrum and Isfa I was going to post it here...
1. Is there anyone on your friends list you would ever consider having sex with?
There are several people on my friends list that I have had or currently do have sex with. =P
2. Sex in the morning, afternoon or night?
Yes? xD
3. What side of the bed do you sleep on?
Right side. I have also slept on the left and middle depending on whom I'm sharing a bed with.
4. Do you masturbate?
I do, but I don't get off. Mostly, it's for the sensations. *shrug*
5. How often? Lately?
Not very often.. And, yes. Earlier this week.
6. Have you ever taken your clothes off for money?
Nah. People usually ask me to keep mine on.
7. Do you prefer showers or baths?
Prefer showers, but like baths all the same.
8. Have you ever had sex in the shower or bath?
Murr. Yes.
9. Do you watch/read pornography?
Yah, and write it from time to time, too.
10. Do you want someone aggressive or passive in bed?
Aggressive = competing for dominance. Passive = boring. Gimme someone in the middle who'll respond.
11. Do you love someone on your friends list?
Yes. A couple of someones, actually. =3
12. Do you know all the people on your friends list?
Not everyone. Some of them are of the FOAF variety. :)
13. Would you choose love or money?
Love, but, unfortunately, our world doesn't work like that.
14. Your top three favorite kinks in bed?
Really? You're making me choose? Lemme see here... Note that all of these are from the giving end. Biting, impact play (caning/spanking {bare-handed AND flogger}), and hair pulling.
15. Has anyone ever gone beyond your personal line of respect sexually?
Um... I don't believe so.
16. Where is the most romantic place you have had sex?
For me? In my girlfriend at the time's bed under the moonlight and steady, slow snow on Christmas night.
17. Where is the weirdest place you have had sex?
There really are no "weird" places... Maybe in the forest in DeKalb next to the fence that divided the park from the golf course?
18. Have you ever been caught having sex?
Hahahaha. Yes. By the cops, no less.
19. Have you ever been to a strip club?
Nope. Why should I have to pay for something I get to see for free? =P
20. Ever been to a bar just to get sex?
Yes and no. Never came home with a random person, though.
21. Ever been kicked out of a bar or a club for sexual reasons?
Nope.
22. Ever been picked up in a bar?
If you wanna get technical, yes, as I met JJ for the first time in a bar. But, in general, no.
23. Have you ever kissed or had sex with someone of the same sex?
You seriously have to ask this question? ;-P
24. What's your sexuality?
Lesbian. I've dated a boy in the past, but real penises tend to squick me now. *shrug* For a time, I did consider myself bi, but, eh.
27. Have you ever had sex in a movie theater?
No, but when I was dating my boy, I do remember getting him nice and hard. *snicker*
26. Had sex in a bathroom?
Been there, done that.
27. Have you ever had sex at work?
No, though at my last job, I contemplated how to do it. xD
28. Have you ever been in an "adult" store?
Yup. And have been consulted in the past on how to properly select dildos.
29. Have you ever bought something from an adult store?
*points to the grey bin that's the same size as the fursuit bin*
30. Do you own any sex toys?
....really? Really?
31. If yes, how many and what are they?
Now, if I told you, that wouldn't be any fun... ;)
32. Does anyone have naughty pics of you or are you on film?
Yes, and yes.
33. Have you ever had sex with someone and called them the wrong name?
Yah, and she wasn't happy about it... >_>

Yep.
35. Have you ever had cyber sex?
I'm a writer. That is my answer. (Keeping Spectrum's answer because it applies.)
36. Do you think oral sex constitutes a form of intercourse?
Mmm... Yes...
37. What's your favorite sexual position?
Honestly, I like seeing her ride my cock. Failing that, curled up against her where I can both finger her and bite her in various places.
38. What's your favorite sex act?
Well, they say I'm a cunning linguist. ^_~
39. Have you ever had sex with more than one person at a time?
What do you think I did last weekend? xD
40. Who do you think has the guts to repost this?
Honestly? Kitten and maybe a handful of people on Fet. xD

Posted 15 years agoHey, folks...
As I write this, I'm in the process of packing up the last two years of my Life for my move back to my mom's place. Not a fun or easy feat, for sure. Anyways, Mom currently doesn't have 'net, so I'll be pretty much offline for the next 2-3 weeks until I can convince (read: give her money) her to get Comcast internet again.
If you need or want to reach me, your best bet is by e-mail: SamiiTiger [at] GMail [dot] com. Those who have my phone number can always reach me that way.
If you'll be at WindyCon or Midwest FurFest, I'll see you there!
Be well!

It's Official!
Posted 15 years agoI will be showing art at the MFF Art Show this year!
I just got the confirmation e-mail a few nights ago, have picked up mattes for pieces (though they may change), and have just to finish one piece and get 2 prints each of 2 pieces I've done...
That said, would you all want to see my photography showed, or just my tribals?

2011-2012 Convention Season
Posted 15 years agoOkay... So... I kinda want to start going to a few more cons over the next couple of years, so... Throw out your suggestions to me!
Cons already on the schedule:
RCFM
MFF
Persuade me. Which cons should I try to work into my schedule between classes and work? More importantly, who wants to see me at said conventions?

You're Doing What?!
Posted 15 years agoIn a move of boldness, I think I'm going to show some of my tribal artwork at MFF this year. I don't expect to sell, but I think it would be cool nonetheless to get my style of art out into the "mainstream".
So, yeah. Expect to see some of my tribal artwork on display at MFF this year.

MFF Room Space Available!
Posted 15 years agoWith
sabrinageek moving out to Portland in a couple months, I have roomspace for MFF available for 1-2 people. My room is reserved for Friday through Sunday night. How I traditionally do roomspace is it's the cost of the room split between the number of people in the room per night. I don't expect payment the moment you walk in the hotel; as long as I receive it by the end of the con, I'm cool with it. I'm typically quiet, keep my belongings centralized to one area, and am a fursuiter. So, yeah. I'm pretty much in the room only to shower and sleep or if I need to retreat from conspace for a bit, which isn't very often.
...And this is where I do number crunching for those of you who are potentially interested (and for my own sanity so I have an idea of how much it is). Please remember that these are approximate numbers and real numbers will be given once I have a billing summary from the hotel when I check in. It may be a tad more or it may be a tad less. These are a result of me putting together numbers from the room rate + tax rate.
$140.12 ($124 + 13% tax) per night
$420.36 for 3 nights total
$46.70/person/night for 3 people in the room
$35.03/person/night for 4 people in the room
So far in the room is just myself and my girlfriend and we're willing to host up to two more people. Interested? Drop me a line either here, on messengers, or via e-mail.
ETA (7/22/2010):
Aaaand my room is now full! DC, my kitten, and I are rooming together.

...And this is where I do number crunching for those of you who are potentially interested (and for my own sanity so I have an idea of how much it is).

Art/Character Musings
Posted 15 years agoBlame my interest in uniforms (we could argue that it's a fetish, but that's neither here nor there at the moment), but Nikolai's now dual-purposed. Not only is he my Playboy, but he's also got the dual-history of having served in WWII, which, obviously, places him during the 1940s. And, really, Soldier!Nikolai is a lot of fun to play in RP... So, I'm kind of looking to flesh out his character design in that aspect a lot. Soldier!Nikolai and Playboy!Nikolai are one and the same person, but he's all-business when it comes to his job in the military, but still loves to have fun. Nik basically represents the balance I strive for. While I'm not so much a playboy in real life, I'm still working on that healthy balance of fun and work. It's getting better as I get older, but it's something I'm still working on and I know is there.
But, anyways... Soldier!Nikolai is an Air Force Choctaw Code-talker that is currently stationed over in France. He is a commissioned officer, likely a Lieutenant, but he aspires to make a career and get at least to Captain, if not higher. Born in the Northeast, Nikolai is 25% Choctaw, 25% British, and 50% Russian. And, yes, he has a slight accent that sounds like a fusion of Russian and British. Still working out how that sounds for when I start doing voice stuff with him.
Appearance-wise, he's a Black-furred lion with silver mane and belly, and sharp sky blue eyes. He's let his mane grow out so it's more like hair, and he usually keeps it tied back in either a ponytail or a single braid. He's a very handsome creature, which is part of what makes him such a lure for both men and women.
Personality-wise, Nik's a lot like me. He's very duty-focused, but knows when to let go and have fun. I often imagine him in a position where he's dominating someone sexually, as that's something I think he'd really enjoy. Then again, as I said, Nik's a lot like me (just more laid back). ^_~
Art! Normally, I like the toony-style art that most furry artists do, and I've gotten some fantastic pieces of Nik done, but I'm looking more at eventually getting some realistic pieces done of him in uniform or in his suits (sky blue zoot-suit or black tux)... So, I ask you, my readers, who your suggestions are for realistic fury art. I'm currently lusting after art from Meezer (RedCoatCat), Blotch, and Strype, but hell if I'll ever get a commission slot from any of them. x_x
So, who are your favorite artists to look at for realistic art?

When approaching a wild Samii...
Posted 15 years agoBecause I will likely not be online tomorrow as I gear up and sleep in as much as I can, here's my "Guidelines for Dealing with A Tiger At Con" post.
- Come up and say hello to me! I love meeting new people.
- Hugs! Like most furs, I'm fairly affectionate. The only thing I ask with this is that you introduce yourself to me first.
- Volunteer! I'm the Lead Volunteer Coordinator for RCFM, so if you've an inclination to volunteer and help out, either myself or
sabrinageek are the ones to talk to.
- If I'm in fursuit, please do not come up behind me and try and startle me. I won't have a handler with me since I can see fairly well, but I can't see behind me.
Mostly, though, have fun this weekend! I know I'm going to try to between all of the running around I'm sure to be doing. ^_~
See y'all on Thursday afternoon! ^_^

Oh! On Thursday late night (thinking midnightish), I'll be doing a small memorial for my best friend over at one of the parks near the con hotel. Thursday will be the 2-year anniversary of her death, and, while I do not approve of how she died, she was one of my best friends.

RCFM Volunteer Raffle!
Posted 15 years agoLong ago, in a universe far, far away, RCFM held a raffle for its volunteers as a way of providing a little something extra for all of their hard work during the convention.
It's been about 4 years since we've done a raffle, and I'd like to bring it back. That's where I need your help. While I'm planning on picking up some random, cool knick-knacks to add to the pot, I'd also like to add in some stuff from our fandom as an extra incentive. Not only would it provide the RCFM volunteers with an opportunity to possibly snag something they've wanted from an artist or vendor they've admired for some time, but it's great advertising!
If you have any questions, please feel free to note me here on FA or e-mail me at samiitiger@gmail.com.
Thanks,
Samii
