Art Goal
Posted 16 years agoThe last seven years of my life are a waste.
I had left high school with a dream to one day put my comic, "Tide", on the web and become a B-Level furry artist. It was all I wanted.
I stupidly put all that on hold for seven years to accomplish goals that were not my own. I grant you that what I've done in the last seven years is extraordinary, but it WAS NOT ME.
I could rattle off many reasons as to why I did this, but none of them are good excuses. This was a poor choice on my part and I blame myself.
My deepest fear has been that I can not regain those years. I'm older now. I worry that the best years to improve art skills were those seven years I lost. I worry that the last three years my skills have actually degraded.

But I realize now that I can not live like this. I can not live without god damn trying to regain those lost years.
I need more hours in the week than what I have, and that means getting rid of the 40 hour day job. I need loads more time dedicated to myself and my art than silly little afternoons that I practically sleep away because work exhausts me.
I need better education. I need someone to teach me what I've missed. I am hoping for either a chance at a university/college with a Continuing Education program .... and/or some furry artist that would love to take me under their wing and teach me. I'm guessing it'll be the former.
I need to let go of the past. Done that yesterday by throwing out years of sketches that depressed me.
I DON'T know where this will lead me. I DON'T know if this is a good idea. I DON'T care. I NEED this too work ... no matter how scared I am right now. No matter how alone I feel right now ... I NEED this plan to work.

Posted 16 years agoThank You to those of you that have offered up advice and ideas. I am still considering my purchase, but I've gotten more information than I have in the past and it is helping me decide what it is I want my computer to do.
I still have questions, and I am sure I more will pop up. But I assure you that I am at a better position than I have been. Thank you for your vast knowledge and friendship.

Mac vs. PC
Posted 16 years agoI'm so confused about what to buy for a computer. The eMac I have here won't cut it for me.
I have always used Macs, but I have often thought about going PC. I am just not sure how to go about the process. I am very unfamiliar with the PC world, only associating it with hang-ups, viruses, and crashes. However, the versatility in upgrading PCs and the level of freedom that developers have with PCs is enticing.
I have been getting some advice from some computer friends, but I want to hear from you all.
What I want:
A large monitor (24 to 30 inches) that's durable and will last for many years.
Speed, so that multi-layer Photoshop files run smoothly and without lag.
Money is not an issue.
I understand that I need a multi core processor, and a lot of RAM. But I don't know the PC world that well. Can any of you give me sage technical advice about what I should look for, and what the benefits of going with a mac or a pc would be?

Tablet PC
Posted 16 years agoI saw a Tablet PC at Staples today, and I must agree with Xoa that the neck of those things looks frail. The last thing I want is it to break on me. Though granted I would probably never open it up anyway and just use it as a sketch pad.
I think I would buy one cheap. Like a used model from eBay from a reputable seller. Make sure it has Wacom technology. It be pretty neat to have, but not worth buying outright.

Computer
Posted 16 years agoMy desk is a frustrating piece of crap and is a large contribution to my insanity. I put up an image of it here http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2110661/ and what you can see is that I have too much stuff for too little of a space. The drawers don't even hold letter sized folders. It's a worthless desk, and I'm going to Staples soon to buy something different.
However, I am still not set on my computer. I still want to buy something new as the computer I have is not functional for me to work with.
Here's the list of what is IMPORTANT to me in deciding a computer:
*Able to run Photoshop or any art studio program flawlessly. I want it to render changes within seconds, and not get bogged down when multiple layers are working against each other.
*Large monitor for the coloring phase. I want to be able to stretch the image wide so I have more room to paint and stroke lines.
*Sturdy. I want this computer to last more than two years. After two years I don't want to feel frustrated and constricted.
*Big Brain. I have many images I want to sort through. I love using photo storing programs like iPhoto, and want to be able to flip through images and organize them without threat of the computer crashing on me.

After that it's just flavoring. It be nice to have other options, but for the most part I want this next computer to be the ultimate ART computer. One that doesn't bog me down or interrupt my creative thought process with lags.
I'm liking more and more the idea of a large screen coupled with a second monitor. The ease of dragging reference material to the small screen as I work on my project in the larger screen is seductive. However, I am not sold on this just yet.
I'm looking at the pros and cons of a Cintiq Wacom vs. a Tablet PC. A Cintiq is very pretty, but I would not be able to run off with it whenever I would like. It's functional and allows me to see what I draw right at my fingertips, but over the last few years I've gotten skilled with my current little blue wacom. I don't need the extra screen to draw.
Tablet PCs are nice, but I can't imagine doing heavy multlple layers on it without it bogging down the processor. I see myself easily buying a large screen computer and transferring sketches and inks that I have made on the Tablet to the larger beast for finishing.
I suppose that that is what I would like best. A large 24 inch flat screen monitor with a fast processor and extra RAM and an external harddrive, all able to render Photoshop effortlessly. A second or third monitor to drag chat rooms and reference material to. And a tablet PC that I can sketch on and ink with at my leisure before bringing it to the large computer for completion.
I don't even need to keep them the same OS. Photoshop documents can open on any machine.

Please Read Important Note about my Art.(Please PLEASE Read)
Posted 16 years agoArt is my life, and I have dreamed of creating graphic furry novels and comic strips since high school. However, if you have noticed, my art production is rather slim compared to the production rates of artists like Grisser, Ten, Blotch, etc.
This is because I grew up with horrible insecurities that started with my childhood surgeries and schoolyard taunts. I won't sugarcoat it. I think I am horribly ugly, and there is not a moment where I am not negatively putting myself down for the way my neck can barely turn, my missing ear, the sound of my voice, the lankiness of my body, the scars, my height, etc. etc.
It has been a drain on my personality, life, and soul since birth.
It has also drained me creatively. The more I negatively put myself down because of physical looks then the more I put myself down for creativity. I have spent a good portion of my life not practicing art because I don't feel like I am worth it .... or I don't feel like I am capable of good art or good story comics ... or I feel that if I am ugly, then there is something wrong mentally as well ...
I can recall every time I put a pencil down and draw a sketch that I am not happy with, then my mind tells me I am ugly and it's not worth to redo the sketch. It STILL happens.
And as the years go by (I am 25) then the more I have started to negatively put myself down for not having practiced art in my youth. Art gets better from years of practice, and teenage youth is the most active time for the human brain.
So the cycle continues ... a horrible cycle of depression and negativity that I can not break out of. ((Art is only one of the victims ... I have never had a mate or boyfriend, and I have all but given up on the hope of finding love.))
.... I write this because despite all this negativity I have an incurable and insatiable sense of creativity running through my head non-stop. I pace my room and my house EVERY SINGLE DAY with stories and scenes with my characters that I have kept silently creating since high-school. They will NOT leave my mind, nor will they leave me alone. They are my children and my soul, and they are persistent in getting out on to paper for all to see.
I NEED HELP. I need help to break the cycle, to break this near suicidal negativity that has been killing me for over a decade. I don't know what else to ask. I barely know what else to do. I do not wish to make any excuses. What is past is past, and I can not get back those years that were wasted. I NEED HELP NOW, and whatever you can think that will give me the boost I need ... recommendations, criticism, love, friendliness, positiveness, whatever ... please tell me.
Advice on how to practice art, on how to set goals, on how to lift my head up ... I am constantly boiling in hurt and fear, and hearing someone talk next to me is the only sign that I am alive now-days. And I desperately want to feel positive at least once about my art. I have lost confidence that I will ever feel good about my body, but I don't want to give up on my art that begs to be refined so that I can let loose my muse.
I don't know what to do. And I need someone out there to tell me what to do.

Narrowing Computer
Posted 16 years agoI have narrowed down my choices in computer. The largest concern I have is speed and desk space.
I am currently using an old writing desk that has small leg space, and barely any room on top for a hunky eMac and scanner. That has to change.
Another thing I want is faster RAM speed so that Adobe runs smoother.
Now deciding between a Macintosh and a PC is important. I know now that choosing the biggest and baddest computer doesn't mean squat unless I game. All I care about is comfort in drawing.
I've narrowed between these choices:
A) 24 inch iMac
B) Tablet PC from HP
C) Custom built PC
I am hesitant on PC for two reasons. One is I don't want to have to deal with Vista. The second being I don't want the distractions of gaming. Should I buy a PC then I will HAVE to buy The Sims 2, Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter, Warhammer, Warcraft 3, DnD Online, Icewind Dale, Sim City 4, etc etc etc ... and I don't want to be distracted from my art.
A Tablet PC would be great in that I can't really game on it, and it provides me the comfort of a Wacom without the strain of having to look up as I draw. Of concern is the fact that I would be carrying it around and I do NOT like the fragile nature of notebook computers.

Posted 16 years agoI have an eMac with OS X 10.3! I hate how old the OS is, and I hate how the computer is FAT and not skinny like most of today's models.
Should I:
((A)) Buy 10.4 cheap from Amazon or Ebay.
((B)) Buy 10.5 and hope it doesn't slow the eMac to much.

Posted 16 years agoFurp was a member of #Floridafurs a few years back, and I have compiled an array of quotes from the logs I have of the irc chat room. These are characteristic of Furp's insanity and silliness, but I threw in a few quotes that will hopefully allow you to get to know him better. He was a great guy to chat with.
It is hard to think that I won't be able to chat with him one last time, nor get back at him for all the sappy puns and jokes he pulled.

Posted 17 years agoI guess I'm the only one that doesn't like it. The tiny thumbnails all line up in a single row extending the page. I just don't like the look of it. I much preferred the old text style where you could run your mouse over and see the thumbnails pop up. I guess people had problems with that style.
Oh well. Can't have everything :D

Posted 17 years agoI didn't grasp the full depth of this bad economy because I landed a well paying job right before the market went south and gas prices went up. My checking account has been healthy. Good benefits, a 300$ bonus for christmas, and a 6% raise at the beginning of the year.
However, I hadn't looked (until now) at my investments for the 2008 Year-End.
2008 Total $ loss because of Stock Market: $9,094.95
I am at a loss for words. I hadn't expected it, even though I've heard the news every day. My grandmother's inheritance is back to where it started. Is anyone else out there loosing money? I'm not sure if any of my friends have investments.

Posted 17 years agoI have a few voicemails stored on my Verizon cell phone that I would like to have put on my computer. Unfortunately, cell phone carrier companies are still a little prehistoric with this aspect of technology.
I have three options.
The first is to record it using a microphone. I've nixed that idea. There's a thing said for quality.
The second is to sign up with Skype and call my phone and listen to the voicemail while using a paid add-on to record it on my computer. Too much money in my opinion.
The third is to use a YouMail account. However, this is a bit tricky. If I set my own phone up to be the YouMail recipient, I can no longer access my Verizon's voicemail box. The idea is thus obtaining a second phone that has YouMail service, and forwarding my voicemails to that phone, and obtaining the voicemails online at YouMail's site as mp3s.
My question: Does anyone have YouMail. Or can ANYONE suggest an easy way of putting my voicemails on to the computer?

Posted 17 years agoI spent a good amount of time in Portland, Oregon visiting friends. I saw Shardfire for the first time in two years and was amazed to find out that he now weighs LESS than I do. I love his ferrets. I also met cajunfox again after 6 years. I also met for the first time GD Fawks, Naes Blackwolf, Kyo, and Tora.
It went down like this: I bought the tickets and arranged for Tora to pick me up from the airport and drive me to Shard's apartment, where I walked in and asked if he was home. I then waved at him and he freaked out. It was great.
Then I got sick. And for the rest of the trip felt ill and miserable. I made the best of my situation, and enjoyed what little I could. Thanks to the hospitality of my friends and Tora's extra bed. By Thursday I debated going to the convention at all, and in the end I decided that since I already bought the tickets that I would go.

As for MFF, I won't give a con report. I realize I don't read those anyway and usually skip to the shout outs. So here it goes:

"I need a room at MFF, any hotel will do. Money is not a problem, i can easily pay. It's just the floor space I need.
I have a back issue, and require a mattress, but will break down and buy an inflatable bed and live with it. I have no intention to use the room for anything but a sleeping destination.
I'd like it to be a quiet room at least, but it's getting so close to the con that I might have to settle for anything.
