G-fest 2017 day 3
General | Posted 8 years agoA day late in what I saw, but here it is.
Took a cousin who is a DBZ fan with me and he was blown away by the convention. :)
He was amazed by it all and meeting the actors who were there.
The Kiyotaka Taguchi panel was cool. He brought Ultraman X over and a few independent shorts he filmed. One of the shorts was cool and gross in this worm kaiju at Fukushima was eating the fuel in the empty reactor and when the JSDF shot at it, it sent this electric beam that killed the soldiers, making them barf up blood all over the place, some even exploding. Creepy.
The other film was very funny, Female Weapon 701 has giant robot woman fighting a kaiju. Right off the bat it has the two face off then a close up of her chest to see the internal cockpit and woman inside piloting her larger robot self. The kaiju knocks her into a building to which she stumbles on her boyfriend screwing this other woman when she turns to see if anyone was hurt. Oh things got heated until the kaiju began fighting again. She turns her right arm into this big gun and blows teh creature's head off before going back to her cheating boyfriend. He's apologizing to her and thanking her for saving them,but instead she just kills the two herself. Everyone watching was laughing.

Met and got an autograph by Shinji Higuchi. :)
The panel by Higuchi was interesting. He began what he does when he was 18 and worked with the guys on Return of Godzilla aka Godzilla 1985. Even test fitted the suit for Ken Satsuma and helps with the spfx. He even made his own independent films with his friends in college before he worked on the Heisei Gamera series. Shinji went on to explain how he got to work on Attack on Titan and Shin Gojira and even who he and Anno hired to work on the film.
Making Shin Gojira took from 2014 to 2016 from start to finish as well as his Titan film at the same time. He was dedicated and worked right on through both films. All this while Legendary was making their Godzilla film. Legendary has the rights from 2014 up to 2020 and sadly Shinji said that is when we'll see Toho start another is after 2020. We'll have to wait. As to Higuchi working on a sequel to Shin Gojira, we'll see as well.
I also attended a panel comparing the 2014 and 2016 movies. Each film has it's similarities and differences. 2014 was the US reboot and attempt to repair the damage of 98 by paying more attention to the genre and fans. Shin Gojira is using the 2011 disaster and events as a result of it to speak out to the world.

The opening ceremonies was awesome. Robert Scott Field, Shinji Higuchi, Michiru Ooshima, Yuji Kaida, Kazuhiro Nakagawa, Kiyotaka Taguchi, and Tony Isabella.
Meeting Academy Award director Higuchi was amazing. XD He was so happy how we fans reacted to Shin Gojira that he cried. "Thank you very much, thank you very much."

For furries, I saw a couple at a costume contest while there, full on wolf kaiju suits. :)
I found out from one of my friends there that actress Megumi Odaka nearly got a cameo in Shin Gojira as the scene during the first attack of the second form of Gojira, was filmed near Megumi's home and she almost wanted to be an uncredited cameo, but changed her mind given how some fans are. Who knew. She nearly had a cameo in the new film, but not as Miki Saegusa, but as an extra caught up in the disaster of a kaiju attack.
My friend who met Megumi in person said she is very kind, funny, and sweet. She's not as shy as she was in 2000 for those who went back then to G-fest (I didn't begin until 2007).

He even suggested it to hotel owners.
Robert walks by the window, sees Godzilla, calls the actor who played Shindo over, Godzilla blasts them, and that's the commercial. The owners were not happy, "No no, it would be bad for the hotel."

And he goes “it’s the Farscape movie script.” I’m like … whaaat? Hurry up because we all getting old and dying … and we’re getting fat. So it is definitely out there in the ether. So keep on him people and lets get this movie made.”
As a fan of it myself, I'm happy Farscape is coming back. :)
