The Year of the Ref Sheet
Posted 8 years agoSo you may have seen that I've been uploading a few ref sheets as of late. This is because I'm looking to get some trade pics done this year. That's right, I'm opening for trades! No commissions yet, but if you're interested in an art trade with me, feel free to get in contact and we can discuss schedules. :3
There's a WIP list of my characters ref sheets in the header of my main page. Go take a look!

Don't Panic
Posted 9 years agoI honestly wasn't expecting this. My phone exploded with twitter and telegram notifications around 5am and all I could do was lie there thinking "Uh-oh. He's won, hasn't he."
Whichever way you voted, I've written down a few of my thoughts on the matter. I hope you'll accept the humble words of this jaded, working-class brit. Feel free to post your opinions below, just don't let it turn into a shitstorm. I'm going to keep this journal as unbiased and hateless as possible. I'm sure we've all had quite enough hate for one year.
First Things First
it's in the title. DON'T PANIC. America is not going to change overnight just because it has a new president. Even if he decides to rewrite the entire constitution, political legislation is something that takes months, sometimes years to plan, produce, clarify and approve. So don't expect every neighborhood to have a concentration camp by the end of the week.
To younger readers - you've been privileged to grow up in a very progressive era for America and the rest of the world. I remember a time, less than 20 years ago when gays and transgenders were only represented as a punchline in poorly-written sitcoms. When climate change still went by the misleading definition of 'global warming' and nationalized American health benefit was dismissed as communism. Since then, we've had a black president, multiple states accepting gay marriage as law, renewable energy companies gaining ground over corporate fossil fuel giants and even transgender bathrooms. Even with all of the war and global catastrophes that have occurred, America has grown in to a much more responsible and respected superpower than it was when I was growing up.
After all that progression, seeing a man like Donald Trump enter the White House must seem like the apocalypse. But it isn't. We've taken too many steps forward and come too far for him to reverse all of the good that has been done. Make no mistake though, this is definitely a massive step back in terms of our progression as a species.
Big Boy's Brexit
I've seen a lot of people comparing the results of this election to Brexit, and how an extremely vocal, anti-establishment right-winger can completely topple a stable democratic system. In many ways, they are right. If you voted for the democrats this election, you know pretty much exactly how most of us brits felt back in May when the results came in. But, even though I am strongly apposed to Brexit and all of the hate it has generated, these decisions were made via democratic process and the result must be respected, win or lose. Many of us had grandparents that fought and died for our freedom to choose the leaders that we want to govern our respective countries. Don't do the typical kneejerk reaction and blame the system. That's what Trump does when he loses, and you're all better than that.
My only worry is the people, like with Brexit, will use this election victory as an excuse to justify their right-wing opinions and ideals against immigrants, or whomever is the target of their small-minded bigotry. The only real over-night change with Brexit was a sudden spike in violent hate crime against immigrants. But this could be escalated tenfold in the case of the election victory, simply because most of the vocal republican demographic also happen to be armed. If you are an immigrant to America yourself, or belong to any one of the multiple races Trump declared war on during his campaign, I urge you not to take any chances if you have leave the house in the next few days. Please be safe and take care.
Also, don't get me wrong, I'm not a massive fan of Hillary Clinton either. But even if she did get elected as president, the senate vote would still have come up republican. She would have been completely toothless to make any serious changes to America while the republicans block her at every turn, much in the same way they did with President Obama. The republicans are looking out for their own interests and the easiest way to do that is to make the current democratic leader look as ineffective as possible.
The World Stage
Make no mistake America, this doesn't just affect you. In terms of how this affects the rest of the world, my biggest worry is more of a long-term change in global culture and society. With Britain leaving the EU and America leaving ... well ... the 21st century, this may set a precedent to other right-wing politicians in other democratic countries whose population is also bitter and jaded about the unheard calls for help, excessive immigration and lack of economic growth. France, for example. National Front leader Marine Le Pen may win the French election because of these recent events and take France out of the EU as well, completely crippling it, financially. Europe may be plunged into a new dark age of digital espionage with Russia. Normally I would dismiss that as a nightmare dystopian future, but for a lot of people, we're already living in one.
My heart also goes out to Syria, Libya, Afghanistan and all of the other countries being torn apart by war and in desperate need of aid and sanctuary. The first world should have used it's privileged position to open its arms to any fellow human being in need of help. But this year, an overwhelming number of people in our countries have made it quite clear that we are more concerned about building walls than building bridges.
A Summary
Trump is not the first rich white guy to win an American election and he won't be the last. And need I remind everyone that Mr President is being put on trial for ONE of his MANY rape allegations on the 16th of December. This is also a man with no political experience whatsoever who has been barricaded from using his own Twitter account because he can't control his anger. With any luck, he'll be impeached by the end of the year.
Oh, and just a quick footnote.
On this day in 1989, the Berlin Wall was knocked down by its own citizens, allowing German families of every race, colour and creed that had been torn apart by communist tyranny to leap into each others' open arms.
On this day in 2016, the USA elected a president that has promised to build an impenetrable wall to separate his county from an entire race of people whom he denounced as murderous rapists.
One wall falls, another begins to rise...

Sit-Rep
Posted 9 years agoAnd then, I start EATIN' GARBAGESo ... can we trade in 2016 and get a new one? It's still under warranty, right?
The Recap
Needless to say, this year has not gone according to plan. I left my old job and spent the first 4 months of 2016 unemployed. Had no money coming in and had to live off what was in the savings account, for a while. So not ideal in terms of survival and paying the rent, but great for my artistic drive. It allowed me to focus on getting some nice artwork done for the gallery, and even a few commissions to bolster my finances. I even helped make a friend's game, as well as start work on my own! But some of you may be wondering why that all suddenly ground to a halt a couple of months ago.
The Good News
I got myself another games industry art job back in June. At the moment, I'm really enjoying working there. They seem to understand the creative process much better than the last place I worked (and how sitting in a pointless meeting for half an hour can completely derail it) and trust me enough to get the job done in my own time. Also, because the work isn't completely soul-crushingly boring, I have some artistic drive to work on my own projects when I come home in the evening! Perfect! So far, I have yet to have any problems with this new studio. However, being back at work does come with a cost...
The Bad News
I'm back to having minimal free time again. Maybe 2 to 3 hours every evening, if the commute hasn't completely tired me out. So commissions are totally offline for the time being. Sorry guys! I may still do a few trades with any friends who have the desire to do so, but it will still take quite a while to get my side of the bargain finished. At least my commission backlog is empty this time, so I don't need to worry about keeping anyone waiting.
So that's the dealio, guys. I will try to keep drawing my fuzzies as it's something I genuinely enjoy. Just to let you know that I'm not dead or badgerculled.
All the best,

The Obligitory January 1st Journal Entry
Posted 10 years agoHappy 2016 folks!Oh yeah, because this year will be sooooo much better. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.
NO. BAD SCIFER. BE HAPPY.
THE RECAP -
I'm not going to lie - 2015 was a drag. I spent most of it being very, very sick. I suppose that's what happens when you rent a house where the carpet fittings are so old that they've turned into toxic dust beneath your feet. And the walls and windows are so thin and provide so little protection from the damp that I may as well have been living in a fucking tent. I honestly think living in that house has taken a few years off my life. (For more information, see my journal entry entitled DEADLY MOON SPORES )
Still, I managed to move out of the old place (The Grottage, as I now call it) and got myself a nice new apartment with modern fittings, brand new decoration and not an ounce of poisonous carpet dust to clog my lungs! The view off the balcony is pretty fantastic, too! ... I just don't know if I can stay in Bournemouth to appreciate it for much longer. :(
THE PROBLEM
My job has really got me down. It's an art job in the games industry, sure. But they really aren't using enough of my skills to keep me invested. Part of me wonders if the studio is even flexible enough to utilize all the creative talents I can offer. It'd be comparable to, say -
If they wanted me to do nothing but pixel art, day in day out. That would be fantastic, for a while. But soon I'd yearn to just do a giant painting with a rainbow of colours and not to be constrained by one single style. And my pixel art would suffer because of how little love I'd have left to put into it as the days drag on. Not to mention my technical ability as a whole would decrease, the less time I had to spend improving other styles.
Needless to say, I think I've lost a step, artistically speaking. This could just be something all professionals have to go through, but it is an awful thing to experience. Especially when there are commissions from YEARS ago that I still need to work on, and when I look back on my gallery and can still see the thing I drew last January...
THE SOLUTION(s)
Still, enough whining. I have the power to fix this. Because with the advent of 2016, I will have been working in the games industry for 5 years! As far as a lot of companies are concerned, that's the magic number for getting them to even look at your portfolio! I've had some interest from other studios already, but most of them have been asking me to relocate far, far away. Only a few of them have been close enough to interest me, at the moment. One of which I have an interview for, very soon!
The only downside to getting a new job that may utilize some more of my skills and talents is that I would have to move house ... again ... AGAIN. And leave behind my awesome apartment! I'm not sure if any job could justify leaving this place behind. Not even a job at Valve. Seriously, that's how much I love it. ;_;
THE FUTURE
On the other hand, I also want to keep up my personal artwork and maybe continue working on my old graphic novel, Silent Storm That's why, some time in the near future I think I will be setting up a tip jar, or maybe a patreon. A lot of my friends have said they've had varying degrees of success with it and I think it will definitely encourage me to draw and stream more in my spare time. Several of my skeptical colleagues have described them as a way to "monetize popularity", but I'm willing to at least give it a try. Maybe I'll split it up into separate tip jars for different projects, and see which one has the most popular interest. :3
Needless to say, I'm feeling somewhat hopeful for this, the year of our lord, 2016. I'm in a much better place in terms of financial stability and health. This should lead to more of what you're looking for from me :
Watch this space, and have a prosperous new year.
Peace.
Retroactive Spankings!
Posted 10 years agoI meant 'thankings', but I thought that title would catch your eye a little better! :P
Wanted to thank all of the people who've watched me recently and commented/faved all of my work. I guess I should draw more comics featuring spider genocide! I usually go round everyone's page and give them the obligatory 'cheers for the watch', but I'm starting to feel insincere the more I do that.
So, as a big canvas response to all my latest watchers and commenters and fav'ers, THANKS GUYS. You really are the lifeblood that is keeping my creativity alive in these dark times of the 9-5 job. I really appreciate it, even when I'm not here to vocalize my gratitude. <3
You guys are the breast-I MEAN BEST.

Thoughts on Patreon?
Posted 10 years agoHey guys and gals, looking for a bit of advice here.
I did ask this on twitter but didn't have much in the way of replies, (not sure if that's a bad omen towards the coming question or not!) but I'm thinking about setting up a Patreon and using it to fuel a few of my heftier, personal projects. I know a few of you out there must have Patreon accounts, so I'm wondering if anyone could give me a bit of advice about setting one up? The Pros, the Cons, the pitfalls and the advantages, etc.
The Idea -
It wont be just for one project. As a few of you may be aware, I'm trying to put together a furry Metal Slug style video game, a graphic novel of Scifer's backstory and just generally spend more time doing commissions for folks. I've spent a couple of years dancing to someone else's tune in the big world of commercial artwork and I'm starting to get sick of it already. (Turns out it's not all it's cracked up to be.)
However, I have very fond memories of spending time doing what I love with realistic time budgets and producing work to a decent quality that I can be genuinely proud of. And having space to learn new skills ... all of those things just seem to have evaporated in the last couple of years.
SO IT'S TIME TO MAKE A CHANGE!!
Perhaps Patreon could be a step in the right direction in terms of making such a change. What do you guys think?

Feedback
Posted 10 years agoHey fuzzies. Wanted to thank everyone that joined in with my art stream on Saturday. It was surprisingly successful and I'm totally going to do another, possibly next Saturday.
The quality of the stream itself could do with a bit of work. What I would love is to have a weekly co-host that I can chat to while I draw. Not sure how successful that would be as I usually listen to blaring music or complete silence while I'm sketching, but I don't see anything wrong with a bit of experimentation. I usually stream sometime in the afternoon, (which is morning for most of you people) so if you want to join in with me, you'll need to get up early. Sorry! ;)
It might not always be an art stream. There are some weekends where I've been drawing all week and just want to vege-out infront of a vidya game. So I may stream some footage from that, if the game is interesting enough. We'll see how things go.
If you're interested in watching me do another stream, or even being my skype co-host for a few hours, leave a comment below.

Stomachitis
Posted 11 years agoHullo folks.
Really sorry about the lack of updates recently. I have picked up a nasty stomach virus from a dodgy takeaway pizza while I was up at
's. This means that my guts have been ablaze for the last 78 hours and despite being drugged up to my eyeballs, I haven't slept well, or been up to much at all.
The doc says that this shouldn't last for much longer, but as it is viral, I'll just have to let my rock-hard badger immune system do it's job and boot it out.
On the bright side though, I have lost about half a stone in under a week! That's right. 1 horrific stomach virus can do the same job in a single week as 5 months of regimented gym exercise!

Hipocrisy of the highest order
Posted 11 years agoLiterally one week after I posted my new years journal proclaiming that I wouldn't be taking on any new commissions ... I took on a new commission.
I think I'm somehow wired to accept people's money for art. WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?! I ONLY HAVE 3 HOURS TO MYSELF EACH EVENING!! -_-
So okay. Maybe I'll take on SMALL commissions. Like, icons or little pixel animations and the like. Because I do enjoy doing them, and I appreciate a little extra cashflow.

Some plans for 2015 (+ BIRTHDAY SOOB!)
Posted 11 years agoNo hovercars yet? ... nope? ... it's fine. No it's fine.
... I'm patient. *folds arms* >:l
Either way, I intend to make TwentyFifteen a good year. The last few years have been incredibly hectic for me. I've hopped between art jobs all over the country, moved house 3 times within the last 12 months and had to make do with the financial rollercoaster that came with it. Needless to say, it's all been rather stressful. But what's really bugged me about the whole situation is that I've fallen out of contact with a lot of my arty friends and colleagues. I used to chat every day with a lot of them. The amount of commissions and trades and gift art and streams and collabs and little funny doodles I never got the time for, it just hurts me on a spiritual level. I've just had to spend so much time working just to stabilize myself financially. But now I think it's time to stabilize my muse.
What I'm planning to do is try to be much more active in the artistic community, here on FA, twitter and the facetube. I'm going to finish off a lot of the gift art I've wanted to do for my pals, as well as some proper coloured characterization work for my own characters and stories. However, I do not think I will have the time for any new commissions. I'm really sorry about that, but I have to be realistic here. Don't worry if you've already paid for a commission, you'll definitely get what you are owed. I'll see how I feel towards the end of Spring. I may have done a fuckton of fresh art and be 100% back-on-my game enough to re-open commission slots! Who knows. Watch this space, either way.
Also, IT'S MAH BURFDAY ON THE 12TH OF JANUARY!
That gives you all pleeeeeeenty of time to get me a present. You've got like, what, 10 days? Das plenty of time. >:3
I've also got a little picture I've been working on for myself. Hopefully should manage to finish it off by the 12th.
The only real thing that can derail all of these plans is my own laziness, or the cruel hand of fate. My current RL job may go sour and force me to move house and start all over again. But until that happens, I'm going to remain optimistic and do a little bit of artwork each evening. Even if it's just a few dis coordinated scribbles. There's something missing from last year and I can't help but feel like I need to bridge the gap ... So please, if you see me on steam playing games for 12 hours like a fat lazy badger, feel free to pester me into working on my pictures. No, seriously. I want you to do this. It's for my own good. :E
That's pretty much it for now, fellow furfags. Part of this year's 'art-ening' will be for me to write more of these journal thingies. I hope everyone has a full and prosperous 364 days. Together, we can push it to the limit.

There's only a few minutes left for me, here in the GMT future, but I recommend you party nice and hard tonight, then get up tomorrow morning and SEIZE THE DAY.
Peace out, furs. And have a great 2015! ;)
