My best friend is over and she, myself, and my sister were in my room watching a movie when my mom and Jim got in a fight (as usual). I only left the room when it got heavy out there, and I walked out to see them on top of each other on the floor, my mom repeatedly punching him. For the first time ever, I stepped in, screaming and pulling them off of each other. This went on for hours. I didn’t choose sides. I mediated.

It’s a very very long story, but I’d never gotten involved before - I had always assumed my mom was in the right, naively, because she was my mom. Tonight I learned that I was very wrong about that, and when I didn’t side with her, she did something she’d never done before - she yelled “FUCK YOU” and slammed the door in my face. I stood my ground because if the seventeen year old daughter is going to have to play peacemaker, so be it.

Hours later, Jim says tonight will be his last night drunk and he’s going to quit because something’s got to give. My mom is still bitter. She said she was sorry that I had to get involved and wouldn’t hug me. But if it has to be this way - if she has to hate me for the rest of my life for hers to be better - I can live with that.

TL;DR physical fight with my mom and her boyfriend, I turned my mom against me for her own good and boyfriend says he'll quit drinking.
