This may be an unpopular thing to say, but artists, especially writers in my experience, need to have a better sense of transparency, responsibility, and courtesy when they are commissioned.

I have had to file multiple disputes with PayPal in the last year or so alone because I mistakenly trusted a writer to fulfill my commission. In each case there was a total lack of communication on their end, even when I told the writer that I intended to file a dispute and receive a refund.

This is going to sound harsh, but: If you don’t think you can maintain a decent workflow and keep open communication with your customers, don’t charge people money. It’s insulting to stay in contact with someone up until the point money is exchanged, and then suddenly it’s too difficult to log onto a website once a week and check your messages.

I know that life can get in the way. And sometimes emergencies occur. If I’m waiting to hear back from you for a long time and you eventually inform me that something truly terrible prevented you from getting back to me, I will understand and sympathize. But, as callous as this might sound, I will probably still want my money back.

This is all a longwinded way to say that going forward I expect to work out at least some semblance of a deadline with any writers I commission — if not the final product, at least the first WIP. If you are unable or unwilling to work with me on this I will probably decide not to give you money. On the other hand, these experiences have been frustrating to the point that I am now reluctant to ever commission stories again.

If this post makes me unpopular with niche fetish writers on FA, so be it. I am tired of being taken advantage of. You are not being given a donation out of kindness, you are being paid to perform a service. Please show some respect to the people who commission you.
