Holidays & weasyl??
General | Posted 13 years agoThe end of autumn term came just in time, I feel like a lemon after the squeezer. I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season! I make put some more class work up here at some point before I go back to school, especially since I smoothly left my personal sketchbook at university.
Oh, yeah! It must be three months ago, because I just made myself a profile on weasyl: https://www.weasyl.com/profile/salamanderteeth let's see how that works out. For now I'll just try the ol' duplication of effort path. Join me there, won't you?

On +Fav, redux
General | Posted 15 years agoSo previously on this channel I was talking about my reservation about the '+fav' mechanic prevalent on many recent social gallery websites--to summarise, in my opinion the nature of +fav makes it of nebulous & degraded value for the person receiving it, and it decreases the likelihood of personal interaction, which is indeed the main point of social gallery websites. I quickly realised that whining is the first resort of the idle and outraged (basically my home address), and it's not much of a contribution to the discussion. So for the useful segment of this journal, here's some brief thoughts about possible alterations or additions to a social gallery system that might alter, or even improve, the user & artist experience from that perspective
My ideal approach would be one that gives more emphasis to 'carrots' than 'sticks', because I suspect that most people become alienated from systems that punish them for doing what they want to. In general I'm kind of leery of using technology to solve social problems (cf. futubachan's use of anonymity as a solution for cliquey forum behaviour) but equally a website, like a physical building, can passively encourage or discourage certain kinds of behaviour through how it is laid out and how it appears.
*Allow artists to optionally disallow the +fav option for a particular work, or a whole gallery
I can see some small appeal to this option, but by and large I think it feels like a passive aggressive 'silent treatment' aimed at people who choose to interact with you in a non-offensive way for their own legitimate reasons. It seems like many people use favourites as a clearinghouse of interesting visual material they can go back to without particular regard to the creator--i.e. they use favourites like I use my HDD--simply because there isn't a separate mechanism to conveniently achieve that.
*'likes', star ratings
Youtube now has several distinct strands of user approval for a video. You can 1) rate an offering out of five stars, you can 2) give it a green thumb up to 'like' or a red thumbs-down to 'dislike' content, and you can also 3) add it to your list of favourites. Both 2) and 3) also add the video to a personal playlist, a kind of visual, browsing-friendly list of bookmarks. Perhaps it's worth noting that these options also all seem to affect what you're shown in the future. This seems like an interesting way to modify the sociality of a gallery website, bringing other people's choices out from their own galleries and onto the front page.
*Giving each user a limited number of +fav 'tokens' in each 24 hour period
The advantage I see to this change is that it would give some kind of consistent basic value to the +fav, but implemented on its own it's as much a punishment as an encouragement.
*No +fav without comment
Tempting! Easily circumvented, though, and we might soon be wading through a sea of 'thx' and 'lol' comments.
*A separate critique feature, a 'Critique encouraged' button or similar labels, as recently implemented by deviantArt
Possibly with some kind of reward for users who submit useful critiques? I don't really know how well this works on dA \_u_u_/ seems like a relatively easy tweak to execute, at least in skeletal form.
*Move favourites galleries off the user page
again, an attempt to normalise the value of a +fav...but whereas tokens strengthen the kudos value of the +fav, I think this would devalue it, and remove one of the chief means users have to feature other artists for people who look at their page.
*A separate 'feature' section on each user's page
I think this, on the other hand, could be a pretty awesome replacement.
Do you have particular ideas as to what you'd like the comment/fav balance to be? or do you feel like the current system is ideal and shouldn't be changed? why? What's your vision of a perfect social gallery setup?

This is type of thing I've been thinking about recently, as I struggle to support myself and my future plans & ideals. It's a Hard Think for me, because I'm generally withdrawn and confused about what significance other people's emotional responses have for me, even more so when those responses might be materially embodied as money, the most volatile and emotively charged meme in our society today.
chival is an amazing lady I met at my first anthrocon back before I was legal (gurl we gettin olldddd) who's in some pretty tight financial straits; if I were to attempt to describe her aesthetic I would have to say something like... psychobilly decoupage ero-guro pinup. There's a lot of wild and potent cartooning in there, but also passages of really delicate close naturalistic observation--often so closely abutting each other there's a brilliant kind of queasy dissonance. There's no-one quite like her, and she deserves your attention and your support! You can read her journal here and see stuff she has for sale at furbuy including this enormous collection of art(currently @ ten bux!!) You can help her out via her paypal address Hellfiresuite[at]aol.com
Thinking about the video above and about Chival's problems made me want to say a little something regarding how I've been feeling about the vital role our money has to play in fostering creativity. As clients of private artists/illustrators/craftspeople/musicians &c selling their goods and services we're also patrons of the arts in a quite serious way--a patron in the same kind if not the same degree as the various Dukes and notables who paid for da Vinci's keep or the Medicis, bankrolling the wholesale artistic reinvention of Florence.
Maybe it's better to think of it just as your furry porn; or your folk art or your rebellion against the mainstream or a hundred hundred other wonderful reasons. To me, it really seems like every $/£/€ you can spend on supporting an artist is part of your vote for what the future could look and sound like. Without that injection of our faith, especially in as perilous an economic climate as we find ourselves in today, we will lose our artists bit by bit, and for furries/anthrofans/whatever in particular I think that means we'll lose a huge slice of our community, and certainly what I value most about it.

I feel like we give a lot of our (shrinking) disposable income to people who don't need or deserve it. Newscorp and Coca-Cola (...if they don't have the same parent company by now) don't need all the cash we're shoveling into their hungry mouths, but there's hundreds of people around us in the world at large and on this webzone of weirdos and perverts who do, and are working honestly with their hearts/hands/voices/brains to bring things to the table that we've never seen or heard or read or imagined before. A commitment to patronage, to becoming personal patrons of the arts in their many forms, is a rewarding one, both personally and for the health and happiness of our communities.
stigmata I got another idea for a journal too!! I'll totes write that later B)
Also if you got any space change after bidding & buying from Chival, buy my shit!

I would just add that furry fans are some of the nicest and most creative people I’ve met at any sort of convention, and I’ve never been received more graciously or generously as a guest at any con before. The whole group conveys a spirit of acceptance and childlike fun.James Gurney

Sellswordin'
General | Posted 15 years agoWell, this journal is one of those pain in the arse commission kind of ones, for which I apologise. I haven't been able to come up with an elegant way to shill. I'd like some cash to pay for amenities and physical therapy, and I'm hoping some of you might want to give me some!? If you have been interested in my drawings up 'til now, and/or you know people who you think might be, please spread this journal around so that I can reach people with an interest in trading their monies for my services.
My current plan is to take on commissions via this pretty cool commission form.
In general I'm probably better at illustrating human-like things than animal-like things & devices, though I'm working on the quadruped flat pelvis. I suppose some things I particularly enjoy are concept-flavoured, such as fooling with character designs to make them weirder/more monstrous and designing crazy armour/gear & costumes. In general I expect commissions will look fairly similar to things in my FA gallery from the last few months.
It's by far the easiest for me to accept payment via paypal, at this address: goldfinchesDOTbyaccidentATgmailDOTcom I might be able to manage other methods though, please let me know. With some payment options paypal wants extra percents on top of the sum, but selecting the purchase>services option seems to be okay, and is also a pretty accurate description.
I liked it in Day of the Jackal when Jack Black got his arm blown off, so I'd appreciate payment divided 50/50 between confirmation of me accepting your commission, and the completion of your piece. This will hopefully reserve your right to request changes, and ensure I'll be working with actively interested parties.
Once we've agreed on your specifications, I'd also request that if possible you send any reference images & text as e-mail attachments to the above address; that way I'll be able to work on art even if I'm temporarily in a different location or my internet goes down.
I can probably also arrange to ship your your artworks for a small extra fee (probably ~£2-5? I'm looking into it!)

On +Fav (after stigmata)
General | Posted 15 years agoa while ago stigmata posted this journal, asking about people's views on favourites, and what giving and receiving them means in art communities. I think it's an interesting and worthwhile conversation to have about how we assign value to effort and creativity. I regretted not taking part in the conversation, but I had other things on my plate at the time. I return to thinking about the issue every time I submit a new drawing and it receives a few +favourites. In a separate conversation later, though, I ended up discussing favourites again, and I think what I wrote (talking to radioyeti about the problems of deviantart) sums up my general view:
That's why I personally loathe giving a +fav without commenting--however since I have very little energy to spare on comments** that ends up as me only +faving pictures that are gifts to me or that I've directly commissioned. I'm not trying to say that everyone should feel or act like I do, though of course I would love it if everyone who +fav'd commented too. I'm aware that commenting is more time & energy intensive than using the favourite button, which is why I often attempt to engage & respond with people who comment on my drawings. When it comes to favourites I don't feel the same emotional or intellectual obligation.
*I may be factually incorrect about this actually, I can't clearly remember if there was or wasn't some kind of +fav mechanism there
**I'm aware that this sounds like a terrible cop-out so in the interests of clarity I suffer from CFS, an immune disorder that leaves me with very little energy full stop, so I daily face choices like: write a comment OR do a drawing; go out on a walk today OR be able to climb stairs tomorrow
"well so before dA you have like, side7 and elfwood, I guess, those kind of things, and all of them share the same basic structure. If you want to communicate with someone about their work the main process is a manual one*. You have to spend time etc, and people only perceive that interaction when they're also on that page. We're interacting with each others' opinions, a drawing or whatever is starting a conversation, be it banal or enlightening.
Whereas the +favourite is a automated transfer of kudos, but one that's completely arbitrary in value. Some people might +fav every picture of a gnoll (a sort of D&D hyena man) they come across, for example, because they like gnolls. That +fav is clearly completely different in character from the +fav of someone who loves your linework, but both appear, because of the easy, crude mechanical device available, to be exactly the same. Whereas 'yay gnolls : )' and 'great linework!' are obviously distinguished.
More significantly, people's favourites show up on their page--so if I +fav I'm repping the artist--but even if I choose to randomise the display of my favourites, how many page views I get a day and how many things I +fav today affects the 'stock value' of each +fav I give. +fav is a kind of social currency that gives value to the (totally undefined) opinions of the popular, rather than the thoughtful or the kind, those willing to spend even a little time talking about the thoughts and emotions stirred in them by a creative effort, even if they just fucking love gnolls."That's why I personally loathe giving a +fav without commenting--however since I have very little energy to spare on comments** that ends up as me only +faving pictures that are gifts to me or that I've directly commissioned. General | Posted 17 years agoI'm pretty bad at this business of upkeeping a public gallery. I find 'community' involvement relatively draining and nerve-racking; I get anxious if I get comments, and gloomy when I don't.
I had a really great time over the summer, taking in Confuzzled, visiting
aloiis in Paris and also taking a trip to Sweden where I saw Sigur rós, Iron and Wine, José González and some other neat acts at Way Out West. Ultimately for someone in my condition, it takes a toll, as does the worsening weather.

Update, Confuzzled, &c
General | Posted 17 years agoSo~ Status is semi-thawed after a cold winter, and plans for the summer are falling into place. I'm pretty sure, disasters aside that I'll be going to Confuzzled in Manchester, UK from the 20th to the 23rd of June, rooming with the wonderful
aloiis<3. There are only 10 places at the con remaining, it seems, so eager UK and european furfans should think about jumping on! Do I know anyone else going? Want to share a room with a glamorous Parisian guy and ...me? Sound off here, please!
Teambuilders, I'm sorry. I haven't forgotten the teambuilding. I was busy and/or ill for a long while, and now I'm just...having a really hard time choosing, guys D:! I might have to abandon actually trying to say useful (ie dumb art school pseudishness) things about them :[
Also, maybe you've heard about this auction from journals around the place on FA: http://www.furbuy.com/auctions/1004216.html I'm ...kind of loath to plug it, because I'm winning right now (! ...and and the very end of my budget) ...but this isn't about me and my lust for commissions at low, low prices!
It's about helping out

Seriously, it blows my mind how good a deal this auction is at *any* price. I'm pretty sure I'd be getting over $700 worth of art for my $450 (heck, even at $40 you'd get $60 worth, and at $80 the auction would be worth $140! HOLY CRAP)

Azzua
Death and renewal & Le bleu
This pair I chose to spotlight Bethany's pencilworks, which are uniformly full of nuance, character and balanced solidity.
Cokehead
Has a very spontaneous feel, but the juxtaposition of typography, fluid organic form and bold masses of colour is smart, ending up very well composed out of seeming chaos!
Gee tee pee.
Was it ever stipulated all the selections had to be from people's furaffinity galleries? Azzua is also a really great photographer, about which I am too pitiful to venture comment beyond I LIKES IT DURR :B
More photos and draws can be seen at her art journal!

:KimonoCrane:
Nicely observed life-like features and good rendering combined with subtle touches of expression to make a subdued but tense portrait.
:Pchat - DinoChicken:
A lovely design-alien yet familiar-constructed from chiselled, well melded shapes.
:OC - BREAKFAST PAANCH!!!!!:
Other artists made fine contributions, but I want you to focus on the leftmost character Twinky, whose energetic, bold curved lines evoke vivid dynamism.
For the future: Continue to work with and expand on your dynamic, kinetic forms~ you're getting great results!

10 COMMENT TEAMBUILDING TIME: PART 1: STOP: HAMMER TIME: #1-
General | Posted 18 years agoOkay, here we go! I'm going to split this into several parts to avoid jamming huge blocks of text in your inboxes and giving each artist a little more spotlight space. I tried to restrict myself to the first few 'pages' (chronological sets of 24, the way I browse) for people with large galleries, both to make things easier on myself and present a better idea of everyone's most recent work. The numbering is just the order people commented in :36

A subdued colour scheme produces surprisingly vivid results when used sensitively, especially when combined with well composed figures and canny use of balanced 'hot' and 'cold', reinforcing the picture's theme.

Barue
Etoro, Baeltzucoatl & Perion
I paired these two as a celebration of "magic realist" creature design. Real world knowledge is clearly being put to good use with both these monsters, along with a fine fantastic sensibility. Fearless use of bright greens rarely looked so good. I always have admiration for people who have the patience, EFFORT and GUTS to get involved with describing a wing feather by feather while still retaining the characteristics of the wing as a convincing whole object. Which brings me to my next selection:
Egret
Strong use of negative space in a minimal composition and a toned ground offsetting the brilliant white of the bird's plumage underline a vivaceous, wonderfully observed nature portrait.
Run Barue Run
Wild, childlike scribbles are not just an exciting and unconventional tool for imparting a sense of motion, but an ideal foil for the measured, delicate ink lines of this very dynamic piece.
For the future: Your attention to detail, precise linework and great compositions are crying out for some forays into landscape and environmental design.

Isn't that just freakin' adorable? A nice no-frills delineation of the body, as well.
-Divine Intervention-
This one has a convincing gestural cartoon combined with simple colour accent to produce an effective, emotive image. Check out the use of that cable trailing in from the front of the picture plane as an involvement device.
-Songs For Clay-
Another great pose bubbling with life, this time working in a simple, clean structured backdrop. And again, it's pretty damn cute too!
For the future: Spend some time getting acquainted with the area of the neck, trapezius and clavicle. Explore a variety of facial structures and types. Stay looooseeeee.

One Paw in the Galaxies...
A very cool, low key illustration sustained by an organic, even handed curve echoing through the whole composititon. The soft luminescence is well handled, too.
2007 Reference Sheet
C'est un design de caractère très beau et joli~ ;D Bold and effective. I really dig the reduction of the wings to solid black design shapes put into dramatic forced perspective (a good trick, also seen here!) Just compare with this earlier version of the same design to see an exciting and tangible progression of confidence and skill. Good stuff!
Jungle Croaks
Everyone, especially me, should be doing stuff like this! We're all most comfortable drawing a d00d standing in a whitespace void. Time to get into those colour values and fill the page to bursting. A well judged warm-to-cool recession in a limited range of hues is the key here.
For the future: You're on the cusp of something excellent. Dive in, and bring worlds and characterisation together~
Okay, that's all for this edition. Stay tuned for further installments in this semi-exciting partwork, and enjoy some music in the meantime!

10 comment teambuilding excercise~
General | Posted 18 years agoTaking part in a meme, I guess : [
First ten people to comment get featured along with three pieces in their gallery I like.
If you're featured, you should post this in your own journal and reciprocate!

General | Posted 18 years agowell! that old one is pretty out of date, after all. I got home safe, exhausted and generally happy+satisfied. I nearly got a nice round dividable-by-ten number of watchers. Maybe I'll do something or other interesting when it ticks over. Thought? :x
AC meme forever<3
General | Posted 18 years agoQ: Where will you be?
A: I will be...AT ANTHROCON!? I am not interested in dressing up as a different monster than myself, so there's no particular area I'll feel the need to be at. For other informations to do with finding me or other peoples, I recommend the good ol' bulletin board. I'm an amateur calligrapher, so that might make anything I put up easier to notice.
Q: How will I spot you?
A: The dulcet tones of BBC recieved pronunciation may give me away. Otherwise, if you see me you'll probably see me rollin, as I use a wheelchair to get around.
Q: Where are you staying?
Q: Who will you be with?
A: At the moment I think I'll be at the Westin, rooming with Liz(<3) and a mysterious stranger whose identity is shrouded in secrets. I'll do my best to find/hang out with my peoples.
Q: Do you do free art?
A: Do you have something to draw that I think is incredibly awesome?
Q: Do you do trades?
Q: Do you do commissions?
Q: Do you do badges?
A: Conventions are probably the only time there is a chance of these things happening. Drawing is my leisure-time activity, not my job. The energy/workrate it would require to 'make a name for myself' and the pressure of expectations are pretty unappealing. I won't be in an artist alley or anything, but you're welcome to try to track me down! We'll do a deal ;]
Q: Do you have prints/CDs?
A: Nope~
More Personal Stuff
Q: What is your gender?
A: male
Q: How old are you?
A: 20
Q: Are you taken?
A: It's a complex situation ;x
Q: Can I touch you?
A: G...gently :,<
Q: Can I talk to you?
A: G...gently :,<
Q: Who would you like to meet up with?
A: A lot of neat artists from this site~ Also my old fuuuuurrrrrends like Lindsaybungle, and someone who knows the full Yang family t'ai chi short form!
Anyway. I will be travelling for like 6 weeks or so, so don't expect to hear much from me for a while.

...Another Year Older and Deeper in Debt+TL;DR
General | Posted 18 years agoMy birthday is tommorrow, June 13th (born on friday 13th, naturally). I'll be 21, old enough to do what the hell I want almost everywhere on the planet!
Anyway~ I've been wanting to make a journal for a while because geez, I have several watchers now! And 10 people or something favourited/and or commented on the Mulan poster homage. I'm not one for the social whirl-I find interacting with people in these kind of environments particularly tiring, so I lurk more often than not-but the feedback I have recieved has definately helped me start to produce more after a long fallow period.
Maybe it's kind of unfair to pick out people, since I'm flattered and grateful for all the interest people are showing in my drawings, but I'm expecially buzzed to be recieving attention from people who are making it in the big wild world of actual art & illustration (e.g. sulacoyote*, JAVA, berbalang etc etc etc.~) some of whom have had a big impact on how I draw/think about drawing.
In any case, since most of you dudes are U.S. based I guess I may see some of you in early July time, as I'll be attending AC as part of my summer adventure. You will probably be able to recognise me due to mostly bein' in a shiny blue wheelchair.
In closing, here's some comics piracy. Delicious visual culture to devour! ul rerget it if u dont b downlodin
Vincente Segrelles' The Mercenary
Chapters 1-5, Chapters 6-10
Mike Smylie's Artesia
1. Artesia, 2. Artesia Afield, 3. Artesia Afire
The Pirates of Coney Island
featuring THREE GEARS OF REVERSE, cadillacula, etc.
#1-3, #4 & 5
Blacksad
1. Somewhere Within the Shadows, 2. Arctic Nation, 3. Red Soul
*Also Reagan introduced me to VNV Nation & In the Nursery back in the day for which I shall always be grateful

Hello furry internets!
General | Posted 19 years agoSo, the temptation to get a sketch from an awesome illustrator finally proved too much :[ (thnx http://www.furaffinity.net/user/finalflight/)
...with the unfortunate consequence that now I have to submit to the sketchmeme too. Hopefully since pretty much no one is watching me, it will be pretty painless!
SKETCH MEME
First five people that comment, I will make for you a small drawing of a thing that you would like me to!
ARE YOU A BAD ENOUGH DUDE TO SAVE THE MAYOR?
1. Spinelicker [maned wolf character]-Done!
2. Sapphire [Joel: ring-tailed lemur]-Done!
3. Mosspaw [Mosspaw]-
4. Lacrimas [Lacrimas]-
5. Anjel [Anjel]-
THE MAYOR...IS SAVED!?
