Posted 13 years agoLife's been a bit overwhelming so far this year and I don't have much time to spend on creative pursuits or even online. I'm spending most of my time at work on the computer now too and it's irritating my carpel-tunnel, so no carving and staying off the computer at home has been necessary too.
So yeah, not really much that's probably interesting to ya'll going on in my life, just keeping my nose to the grindstone and getting stuff done.
Thank you for the fav's and watches left in my absence!
I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying their summer so far!

Good reads!
Posted 13 years agoMy friend
vixyyfox has a new collection of stories available at Amazon on Kindle and the icing on the cake is that's it's a free download right now.
You can read Kindle ebooks through their cloud website on any computer and I never would have guessed, but there's also a free Kindle iPod app.
That combination seems as likely as the lamb lying down with the lion! o.0
Now all I need is time to read them...

Posted 14 years agoWE NEED ANOTHER AND A WISER AND PERHAPS
A MORE MYSTICAL CONCEPT OF ANIMALS.
Remote from universal nature, and living by
complicated artifice, man in civilization surveys
the creature through the glass of his knowledge
and sees thereby a feather magnified and
the whole image in distortion. We patronize
them for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate
of having taken form so far below ourselves.
And therein we err, and greatly err. For the animal
shall not be measured by man. In a world older
and more complete than ours they move finished
and complete, gifted with extensions of the
senses we have lost or never attained, living
by voices we shall never hear. They are not
brethren, they are not underlings; they are
other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of
life and time, fellow prisoners
of the splendour and travail of the earth.

The family issues seem to be improving, hopefully for good. *knocks on wood*
We're still under the hyper-critical eye of the main office at work. Every other week someone is up to "help" us. Even though we've got everything cut back as far as we can and we're running things the way they've told us, we're still loosing money. I've thought all along that we're being set up to fail, probably as a tax write off.
If I'm going to be laid off, I wish they'd do it now so I could have the summer to get stuff done and not this fall when there's no jobs and the weather turns.
I've been avoiding the internet to try and get caught up IRL. I have a terrible habit of logging on to 'check something' then getting caught up and loosing track of time.
Someone stole some stuff up at the cabin. Probably a scrapper and they most likely only got a couple hundred for it, but still irritating. So I got to spend the holiday weekend driving up there to make things more secure. I also need to get caught up with stuff here since it's been neglected for way too long. So it's imperative I keep myself on task.
I had plans to take advantage of some more cool weather this weekend to finish the yard work here and go for a ride. But Friday night my throat swelled up and I got a low-grade fever. I guess that's my body telling me it's time to slow down a bit.
I was too out of it yesterday to do much, so I sat in my chair researching MLP and watching the original movies and TV series.
Wow, talk about poorly made 80's toons!
I did manage to dig this gem out of the dusty depths of the internet, the My Little Pony Song Tape! It was offered as a record and tape for a short time in the UK around the mid eighty's.
Ok, it's pretty cheesy, but also has a very addictive, 70's pop sound to it.
The site it's from only offered one track at a time and hadn't updated in quite a while. But after some guesswork I managed to figure out the names to the other tracks and download them. They were from an original, well-used tape and not very well done. There was a lot of hiss, the tags were rubbish and recorded in stereo with most of the sound on the right track. I polished them up in Audacity and added tags so they're usable at least.
I was going to put the tracks in my gallery, but it would probably get me banished to the moon, so I zipped it and loaded it here:

A couple weeks ago my supervisor was on a Skype conference call with the other offices. The CEO started talking about how our terminal is loosing money and they need to do cutbacks. Then he started questioning him about what I do and talking about how we don't need two people in the office for the amount of drivers we have.
Then it was pointed out that I was listening in and he started backpedaling.
Last week the head of safety was up to set our terminal up with an electronic log book system and had us write out our job descriptions for when the CEO was up this week.
The CEO showed up today and continued to talk about how it's not our fault, but that our terminal is loosing money and they need to do cutbacks to bring it in line. He went on about how we don't need all the equipment we have and that we don't need two mechanics and two office people.
He kept trying to pressure me into going back to driving. I said I would if we had the loads that I could do with my home schedule, but we don't get that many of them any more.
He was politely indifferent.
Eyup, looks like I might have plenty time to go riding soon.
The only thing that might save the trailer mechanic and I is the operations plan my supervisor spent his free time last week working on. It shows a viable way for us to be profitable, but I'm not going to hold my breath since upper management rarely accepts anyone's ideas until they've made them their own.

I was attacked yesterday...
Posted 14 years ago...by a ninja tree! ~.~
Life has been...challenging lately. It seems like every time the sun appears another cloud drifts by to obscure it. With all the crap going on I've had to take an axe to my online time...ok, I'm lazy and used my chainsaw, but you get the idea.
I got the first break from everything in a long while yesterday and took advantage of my freedom by going for a ride.
After wasting an hour pressure washing the last of the annoying cherry tree blossoms off the van, I loaded up and headed out for Stella.
I'd been there once last fall, but this time I was better prepared for the unmarked labyrinth of trails with my GPS and it recorded these results:
7.3 total miles
1.75 hrs moving time
1.2 hrs stopped time
18.8 max mph
4.1 avg mph
974ft total ascent
967ft max elevation
I took some random pictures with the crappy camera in my phone. These aren't worth putting in my gallery, but they give an example of the terrain.

This bridge wasn't over troubled water, but did lead to trouble.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y1.....s/cd384cb3.jpg
The trail got very challenging after that bridge and I had to hike quite a bit of it. I thought I was through the worse of it and started down a steep section after this:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y1.....s/359ffdf7.jpg
There was a sharp drop followed by a steep rise, so I got my speed up to help make it though. When I crested the top, the trail dove abruptly to the left and dropped again.
The trail turned muddy and lined with roots, which made it impossible to slow down quickly when the trees turned EVIL!
WHERE WAS PINKY PIE WHEN I NEEDED HER!?
Anywho, I was battling a muddy, root covered, downhill trail when a root pitched me towards a tree. Just as I got my handlebar clear of it when the opposite tree punched me in the shoulder. The bike headed towards a drop off, but that was ok, since the tree hit me hard enough to upset the bike and the wheels were going out from under me anyway. I bailed off and I rolled into the fall further punishing my shoulder, then hip and legs and back then rolled back onto my knees to get up.
Yeah, not exactly a graceful dismount, but my guardian pony must have been looking out for me since I didn't land on anything but mud and moss.
My shoulder was killing me, but I could move it and I was less than three miles into my ride, so I brushed myself off and got back to riding. I didn't care how sore I was, I wasn't about to give up the precious riding time I had left and I've always found it's better to keep moving when I'm hurt anyway.
On the way home I made a quick stop by the bike shop to ask about some different brake pads, and once home I put everything away, took a hot shower, loaded a Pez dispenser with Ibuprofen and headed out on the XT to run some errands.
Buster needed chow and so did I, so after stopping by Petco I buzzed over to Nips for a burger. Once I was done choking down dinner, I topped off the bike, made a disappointing side trip to Big Lots (still out of ponies ~.~) and headed out to explore a local canyon road.
It was a pretty ride, although colder than I planned and the rain clouds started rolling in so I didn't waste time taking pictures. I rode to the end, took a couple side trips down logging roads and got back home just under seventy miles later.
I was pretty sore last night, but this morning I was feeling pretty good. Tonight I'm sore again after doing chores all day and driving up north to visit family.
Is it sad that the highlight of my life is crashing?

Sorry I'm so far behind, I'll try to make a real post one of these days and catch up on emails/messages.
Hope you all are doing fine!

Post a journal, chance to win free art!
Posted 14 years agoNot from me! From a good artist! :-P
1. Anyone with an FA account is free to enter this raffle.
2. Post a journal with these six rules, linking to me. Then post a link to that journal below in the comments (so I can keep track of who's in). When these are done, I'll add your name to the list.
3. On Sunday 02.06.11, I will draw 5 names at random from the list, and they will all get one free piece of art.
4. Each drawing will feature one character of the winner's choice, though the setting, pose, attire and all the rest of the details will be up to me. You are free to suggest themes and poses, and moods for the picture, but like I said, I will make the final decision, so don't be a sourpus if I didn't draw what you suggested. Each of them will be inked and colored, and somewhat akin to this: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/5206618
5. I am not planning to draw adult content. You are also free to forbid any themes of your choosing.
6. No journal deleting, that's cheating.

Not that it's much of a surprise,
Posted 15 years agobut I'm not going...will continue, to be mostly absent online. RL has been pulling me in all directions lately and time is at a premium with all the catching up I need to do after the holidays and being sick.
Tonight I'm nursing a major headache.
Next time someone needs to remind me that running a pickup, generator and two riding mowers in the garage, even with the door open, isn't a good idea.
I had to go pay the electric bill for the cabin in person because I forgot to set it up to be paid ahead of time, so I went on up to check things out. Everything seems to be as good as can be expected, other than the Ranger has some water in the floor boards and it and the Mazda are growing mildew.
I got the chargers set up on the tractors and everything else started, but the Mazda kept dying and I had to sit in it to keep it revved up until it was warm.
Next time I'll make sure it's warmed up and running good before I start anything else.
Anyway, I think I'll turn in early tonight. I hope you all are doing well.

It's official, this year sucks!
Posted 15 years agoSo much for my laid back day!
Posted 15 years agoI just got word the only road out of where I work is blocked about a mile from here due to a cop being killed in a shooting.
And the suspect got away...
Edit:
The updated news is the Police Chief was shot in the head and killed. He was responding to a report of an attempted car theft. Getting into a struggle with the suspect, the suspect somehow got a hold of his gun.
The 21 year old suspect was wounded in a standoff, but expected to live.
I met the chief once. He came to oversee us firing our last mechanic when we felt he was unstable and not sure how he would react.
The chief was a nice guy.

Posted 15 years agoNew year resolutions are something I usually avoid. They're a hard thing for me to do because there is the pressure of failure constantly worrying in the back of my mind.
But this year I can think of a couple I'm already working on.
About mid last year I started trying to be more open, to reach out and get to know people better and to meet new people. I met a lot of people and made a couple new friends who I am very thankful for.
But there was a lot of heartbreak too.
As has always happened to me and the reason I have such a hard time opening up, a few people weren't as they seemed. A few times I felt used as a friend for their convenience and abandoned when no longer needed. And, as all too often, I found furries that were not as open minded as they think they are and was ignored or pushed away when I didn't fit their criteria of a friend.
So I'm going to work on my apathy this year, it needs to balance between too much and too little. Being more open and attempting to kindle new friendships wasn't really a resolution last year since I started mid year, but I think I went a bit overboard when I started. I let myself get too involved with people's problems and got hurt when I couldn't help them. I need to remember to keep a dash of apathy in there to temper my passion to help the one's I care about.
And as most people resolve every year, I'm going to try and get back to getting more exercise. I was doing pretty good through the summer, but as fall weather and responsibilities crept up on me, I started putting off riding.
To help this, I ended up buying the Garmin GPSmap 60CSx from Amazon. They had it for the same price as Costco and was running a free overnight shipping special for Christmas.
It's exciting and I get my hopes up about getting something cool like this, but I was a little disappointed at first.
The overnight shipping ended up being second day. I had it shipped to work and stayed late waiting because the tracking showed it didn't make it to their terminal in time for the morning truck. I got an email from Amazon saying it had been delayed due to weather, but when I got tired of waiting and called the local UPS terminal, they said it got on the wrong truck and would be delivered between 6:30 and 7PM. I explained I was at work and needed to go home, then asked if it could be brought out in the morning by our regular truck.
He hesitated and said, "Um, sure..."
Really? Is it that hard a concept to grasp?
Although, he may have been taken back a bit because I wasn't upset and that I had their warehouse number in the first place.
When it finally showed up the next morning I couldn't wait to put some batteries in it and get to figuring it out.
It wouldn't turn on. Nothing I tried would even get a flicker out of it and searching the internet only came back with solutions that it was probably bad and needed to be returned.
Damn...
I had one hope left, a long shot that the batteries were bad. And when I got home I tried another pair and it came right on.
*sighs*
Figuring it out was the next hurdle, and I'm still not there. It has waaaay too many functions! I'm sure they will come in handy after I learn them all though.
I was very disappointed with the base map. What is there is accurate, but that isn't hard since there isn't a whole lot there. I guess they make a lot of money off selling map upgrades.
Being the cheapskate I am, I dove into the web and after a lot of research and fiddling around, have a decent map that lists roads, elevations and everything I need with surprising accuracy.
I've taken it in the car a few times to test and learn about it, now all I need is the coordination of good weather and time!
But this year I can think of a couple I'm already working on.

Hoppy Nude Deer!
Posted 15 years agoOne thing I got for Christmas was sick. Since I'm still on he mend, I figure it would be best if didn't go visit anyone tonight. So I'm sitting here watching 1941 when my Mom calls to see how I'm feeling.
This is nice right? Maybe for some people. >.>
When she asks if I'm going out, I tell her what I'm doing and explain what the movie is about.
The first thing out of her mouth is: "The threat of Jap invasion was no laughing matter!"
This is the one of the biggest reasons there is little joy in my life.
She then went on a long winded rant about how bad it a threat it was, how scared everyone was and some of the bad things the Japanese navy did here, including killing everyone and occupying the Aleutians.
She also said my Grandpa was stopped by a Japanese sub once and they took the fuel out of his boat.
Now this is interesting! I've heard about his fishing boats, but not heard this before!
Of course when I asked why she hadn't told me about this before, she said she did, but I must of been thinking about other things. ~.~
Whatever.
I've always enjoyed hearing about Grandpa, his life and especially about Alaska. But she would rarely talk about him.
And people wonder why I don't go visit her.
In other news, the trailer mechanic at work left this on my desk for Christmas.

It's not very strong and no where as "smooth" as he claimed, but not bad with Pepsi.
This is no where near as good.

In fact, it's on of the few things I haven't been able to finish.
Also, should I be worried, or more so disturbed, that I make a delicious pie filling?
