Apologies for being quiet of late.
General | Posted 5 years agoSo, during winter storm whatever I slipped on ice and broke my right arm and wrist. I'm doing much better and I expect to make a full recovery in a couple of weeks. Stay safe out there all, ice is no joke!
With Apologies to Araki
General | Posted 5 years agoMy name is Damascus. My player is 33 years old today and I am not married. I live in the temple section of an alternate dimension, where my followers are. I have no regular schedule for when I get home and I ensure that I get as much sleep as possible, no matter what. After doing 20 minutes of stretches in a crowded section of town and drinking a mixture of warm milk and lost souls, I usually have no issue falling asleep. Like a baby, I wake up very confused and off balance. I do not smoke, but I do occasionally drink. There are no mortal doctors capable of diagnosing me in a regular checkup.
What I am trying to say is that I am a fox who wishes to live a life free of obligation and judgment. This is how I choose to deal with the universe, and I know that this is what brings me happiness. I do not trouble myself with things like "winning" or "losing". That would cause me to lose sleep at night. Though, if I did fight, the outcome would likely be varied depending on my relative strength to the opponent.
...basically, this is a Roundabout (ha) way of saying it's my birthday today.

General | Posted 16 years agoYou are not your job.
You are not the clothes you wear.

Embaressing Moment from my Past
General | Posted 17 years agoSince I've noticed there's been a lot of time between journals, and since I lack any earth-shattering insights today (give it time, man), I thought I would share with you an amusing moment from my past.
This event happened when I was about 7 or 8 years old. I was in love for the first time (well, at least I thought I was) with a girl whose birthday party (she was a year younger) I was at. Well, I forget the exact context (something about Barbie plates or the like) but she got upset, so I suggested we run away together.
Needless to say, we didn't get very far. We got maybe a few blocks to a general store where we bought some soda and then a little further until both our parents found us and grounded us for running away (and more specifically crossing a busy freeway). This whole event lasted less than an hour.
Still, that was the first time I did something stupid for love. :3

General | Posted 18 years agoMy Great Aunt is Dead
General | Posted 18 years agoShe was 96 years old (though she only admitted to being 95). She died early this morning. I last saw her yesterday afternoon. There was no indication that today would be the day.
She lived a long and full life, travelled all over the world, and was one of the first of my family to come from Poland and the first of her sisters to graduate from high school. I got to know her fairly well before she passed on and she certainly was ready to go, but I still feel bummed, for obvious reasons.
Anyway, just typing this for no reason other than to feel better. Merry Christmas.

Concerning Popular Furries
General | Posted 18 years agoAs it stands, I have heard two derogatory things about artists and (to a lesser extent) writers that have a degree of popularity in the fandom. The first is the success going to the heads of the artists and writers in question, making them seem high and mighty. The second is more about the fans then the artists themselves; to be specific, the fact that many people befriend the artists and writers simply because they know they are popular.
To answer the first complaint, with very few exceptions, the popular artists and writers are nice, intelligent, and many times fun-loving people that simply want to either perform in their abilities or make friends. Not too long ago, a friend of mine claimed that a particular artist was egotistical, high-strung, and had a much higher position of herself than was deserved. Not too long after, I actually met with the artist in question, and found her to be kind, fun-loving, and just looking to have fun. In my opinion, if there is any blame for the perception of artists, it is the constant fanboyism and fangirlism that inflates how others see how the popular artists and writers act.
The second complaint is a bit trickier to disprove, as there are a fair amount of people who will talk to the artists and writers simply due to the popularity they exude. However, this in itself is not a terrible practice. Just as more people tend to know the name of a local celebrity then the local bag boy at a supermarket, more people will know the popular furries than the less pupular ones. The difference between regular celebrities and furry ones (well, one of them) is the fact that the furry celebrities will have MSN, AIM, and Yahoo screen names listed for all who visit to see, and even those who don't will still offer PMs and email. And it is perfectly fine to make friends this way. Honestly, those who comment expecting to form an immediate relationship, or gain free art or stories will be shot down faster than an atheist at the Vatican, and those who completely deny the existence of less popular furs will find themselves lonely and hated by most of the fandom. As for everyone else, who want to genuinely make an effort to meet new people, it's always nice to comment, IM, PM, and use other means to let the person, famous or less so, know you want to chat.
In short, remember that famous furries are just like you and me, so treat them like you want to be treated yourself. Or bother them until they give you free stuff; if it works, tell me.
Thank you, and have a nice day. :)

Furry Art as Portraiture
General | Posted 19 years agoOk, so I've been taking a few art history courses, and I got to thinking a bit about furry art in general. Where does it fit in the grand scheme of artwork? Well, certainly furry art has a variety of purposes, from comics to testing different styles to even satisfying certain desires. But perhaps one of the more important aspects furry art may have is resurrecting a slowly-diminishing style of artwork, and in a large volume of works at that.
Portraiture.
Of course, the fursonas depicted are not by any means complete accurate representations of oneself (unless the person is either wearing a fursuit or is a marvel of biology), but the fursonas can definitely be considered as extensions of one's personality, if not loosely based on what the person looks like in real life, and that alone is enough to classify pictures of said fursonas as portraitures.
The way commissions for fursona pictures are set up very closely to how commissions of various portraits were. The prospective buyer tells the artist how he or she wants his or her fursona to be portrayed, what should be occurring in the background, what aspects should be highlighted, and so on...just as, for literally thousands of years, people have asked artists to do. In some cases, the buyer would even want to be part animal in the prospective picture or sculpture (as was the case with the Sphinx, for example), to highlight qualities of bravery, courage, strength, and other positive traits.
As portraiture stands today, the only two institutions that still take such art into consideration are the military and various universities, with paintings or sculptures of various important officers or professors. Most other people do not care to spend the time anymore to sit for hours for the sake of a single painting or sculpture (especially when digital cameras, in their pure form or in cell phones, are readily available). In fact, the only way a person may want a portrait is if the way they want to be portrayed is impossible to do in real life with a cameras.
Which may make furry art the last domain for portraiture for the common person...
Anyway, just a thought.
