How to get better vocals!
General | Posted 2 years agoI just learned what I am doing wrong with vocals all these years...
You are supposed to add a few delays to the sound, and some reverb as well. In actual studios, these are hardware boxes that sit side by side and you mix them together. So the effects are in parallel. But doing it all on a computer, you slap both effects onto the same track.
This means you have delays, and then a reverb on each and everyone of the delay sounds. In other words, sonic mush.
The fix is to take the sound and send it to two separate busses. One has the delays and the other has the reverb. This is just like what youd do if it was hardware you were setting up. So you get the vocal, the seperate reflections with no reverb, and a single reverb of the single vocal alone. Tada, no more mushy vocals.

General | Posted 9 years agoWhat happened to Sketchup?
General | Posted 10 years agoI have Google Sketchup on the main rig. It gets used for designing desks or assembling stages. Stuff where I need to plan something I'm going to make.
So sketchup has been updated. I went ahead and did the update. Now it's owned by Trimble and they want 590$ for it? Holy...
I'll just stick with ver 8 and not update anymore. That's fine for what I do. And good gosh, I don't have 600$ for something I use once a year in the first place!

Save the Houston Furmeet
General | Posted 11 years agoOn October of 2008 we took over a pre-existing fur meet on the north side of Houston, Texas when the fur that ran it had to leave town. The meet would, on average, draw about 15 people.
Since that day, the park meet has grown to typically hosting between 50 to 70 furs every first Sunday of every month. We have routinely had furs from Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, and Louisiana make the long drive just to come to the park meet.
We have also had furs from Florida, New York, California, Colorado, Oklahoma, England, France, Germany, Japan, and Russia schedule a vacation around the park meet just so they could attend it.
If you have ever wanted to come to Houston so you could attend the Houston PhiPaw Mercer park meet, you can’t.
As of January 2015 all Harris County parks have implemented new rules that have killed our ability to successfully host consecutive monthly park meets.
But there is hope.
Individually we are just furs but collectively we are a fandom.
And when our fandom unites behind a common cause, we are mighty!
If we can get enough people to complain, we may be able to change their minds to allow us to reestablish the park meet.
You can help by sending the message in quotes below to all of the following contacts, then signal boosting this message to every fur that you communicate with.
Post it on FurAffinity, Inkbunny, Weasly, Deviantart, Facebook, and everywhere else.
From all the Houston furs who need your help to get the park meet back
THANK YOU!

Found the problem with the Studio
General | Posted 11 years agoOkay, so I got the damn thing working correctly again.
The problem was one of using ALKIT (an Alesis Fusion 6hd) in the studio rig as the main keyboard instead of the K61P or TRIVA (who was always a secondary anyways.) Alkit had never been connected to a computer before in his life. And though Triva didn't give any complications getting connected up and doing what I expected, that was pure luck -- Alkit wasn't so cooperative.
The symptom was hitting any keys on the keyboard and playing a softsynth would generate the notes commanded, but about 9 seconds after you played them.
Since much money and effort goes into creating Low Latency sound generation for the studio, having a mystery buffer causing delays 900X what you SHOULD be having was intolerable. It took a lot of trial and error and lots of good old fashioned sluething to figure it out. And those of you who are thinking of hooking up a more powerful synth to your computer through a midi interface, take note -- this can bite you too.
The issue was that the workstation was constantly outputting the Midi Clock. All the time. And apparently this was causing so much traffic that the data going to the soft synths was being filled with useless time data. I guess at some point I'd filled whatever buffer existed for the midi interface. At any rate, turning off the feature on the Fusion to output the midi clock eliminated the bug. And now notes play when I play them, instead of waiting around for the next ice age.
I feel less old now, since that was a problem NOBODY has encountered before. I'm the first to find the glitch -- lucky me. And I did fix it. Took a little while, but I did make it work.

Morose and feeling old
General | Posted 11 years agoIt seems my energy and my memory are slowly starting to ebb.
I found my glasses - right where I put them. I was working on the washing machine and was pissed off, hot, wet, covered in sudsy water and trying hard not to get electrocuted. So I put them down at the nearest safe spot -- inside the innards of the machine. Now, who goes and opens up the guts of a washer to see if they'd left their glasses there? The only reason I found them is that I routinely keep the parts needed to fix a machine with the machine itself. That way, future repairs aren't slowed by trying to find this or that part. And there they were, right where I had left them.
And since the lab computer completely died and will probably be weeks before repaired, I've moved (and am in the process of moving) all the jobs to the MAIN computer that I can. There are some things that can be in the bedroom with the main computer... if I ignore the wife's protests. See, I try not to make the bedroom my computer lab. I really do. And most of the hardware won't be coming into the bedroom -- they'll be stored or something. But I need ONE musical keyboard to far around with. Thus the Fusion named Alkit (Triva is in the garage) is now on roller wheels and I can roll it to the main rig when I need it. But it's still a pain in the ass.
And there is a serious problem now that I cannot for the life of me solve. The low latency audio card is installed and working correctly, with 10ms latency. And the soft synths are working... kinda sorta. There's an enormous delay in the midi system, as in you hit a note and 10 SECONDS later the softsynths respond. I see the midi traffic coming into Reaper. But then it seems to enter an enormous buffer and not go anywhere for ages.
And I can't remember how to correct this.
or where I put my glasses...
I think my mind is starting to go. I think my memory and my logic are finally begining to fade with age. Now, I'm only 50 -- and it takes this long to gain mastery of as many things as I've had to master over the years. But now. Now I feel that ability to understand, to remember, to know what to do and how to correct problems from tiny to world shaking (things I dare not speak of). And it's all slipping away from me. At least I'm beginning to think that it is.
Maybe this is just a temporary glitch due to stress and the pressure. I hope so. But deep down, I know that my mind will not improve with age. I know that it's all downhill from here. And I don't like what I see descending, even if it's inevitable.

Yay! I've quit my job
General | Posted 11 years agoThis job with the horribly micromanaging control freak has been the single worst job of my life! And to borrow a line from Halt and Catch Fire...
"I can't wait until the day I drive by the building and see the For Lease signs in front of it!"
This has been the most stress filled, must unreasonably run, most idiotically managed job I've ever had the misfortune of accepting. And I did it for a year. I am an engineer -- we are stubborn as a general trait. I tried to make the man happy. I tried to do my job to the best of my abilities. But he didn't want an engineer -- he wanted to do everything himself and just have someone else to blame when things weren't perfect.
So fuck him. I have a new job where they WANT someone to help them out and don't expect superhuman abilities while locking ALL the keys of the company in their office without backups.
I spent half a decade in SAC. And I was happy to see that last base in my rearview mirror, oh so happy. This feels exactly the same way -- so beaten down and scared to move, but move I must.

A wright that's it. Anyone in houston need an EE?
General | Posted 12 years agoMy boss seriously overreacts to every negative issue, no matter how simple. It is clear he's never built anything electronic in his life , as he thinks we just follow recipes and build Legos.
This place is going to give me a stroke. So in spite of the huge pAyday that I don't think I'll be allowed to take even if I don't die of a heart attack, I'm going to start looking for a new job again. Any prayers or leads are gratefully accepted.

General | Posted 12 years agoExcept for a software problem in the scheduler the show is as done as I am making it.
The Zoloft kills my energy. I have caught my wife's fever. I fell out of the tree hanging lights and now I ache everywhere. I turned 50 and celebrated by falling 8 feet.
Since the Xmas trees in the yard are the weakest part and give me the most trouble, to hell with them - they are now retired from the show. I don't have the energy to mess with them anymore.
And with all the irritating glitches, the summer project will be to make it all dmx and robust. I'm tired of fixing stuff getting the show out and taking two days to do it. Fortunately I had junk strips to cannibalize for the damaged resistors.
It looks good. But I'm now sick and sore and I don't want to build it anymore this year .

General | Posted 12 years agoLooks like I have to stagger my Christmas lights launch this year. My gear is working and my internal programs are fine. But Light show pro has undergone many changes this year and it's not working -- for me and for other folks. So what I'll do is go ahead and put the show together and let it run under the controlling computer.
And when the program LSP finally works right, I'll simply turn it on and add the FM transmitter so I have the music added to the show at last.
This has been a year from hell. But I refuse to let the universe piss me off or break me. Too many depend on me and quite frankly the universe is MY bitch -- not the other way around. But my bitch is getting on my nerves by screwing up everything possible.

Finally got the synth loaded properly.
General | Posted 12 years agoYou'd think a manual 298 pages long would have ONE page covering how to add programs to the thing. But nooooo... Trial and error. Finally figured out by reading some old defunct forums that after you put the sounds and the programs in the right places, you have to order the machine to clean up the banks -- getting rid of unused stuff and including new stuff.
But wow, the alesis Fusion sounds gooood now.
Remember - he who dies with the most sounds, wins! :)

Wish I could ban foreign numbers from calling me
General | Posted 12 years agoIt isn't bad enough asshats email me and try to get me to install their spyware crap on the computer. But now they are calling from overseas ( based on time delay of echo ) on the phone, claiming to be from Microsoft and that my computer had been taken over by viruses. I would hope people aren't stupid enough to fall for this, but they must be if the scammers are doing it.
After the third call, I told them I run Ubuntu. They've never called back.

Looking for: Old National Lampoon cartoon
General | Posted 12 years agoIt was in the early 80s. National Lampoon had a cartoon called "Timberland Tales" starring Maurice the little indian boy, and his dog, Foamy.
The cartoon I'd like to have shows Maurice coming upon a woman unconscious on the trail and his pathetic attempts to render first aid. It ends with foamy going to find help, only to be shown snuggling with a fox a few hours later. It's that last panel of snuggling I'd like to see again, if anyone has a copy of this laying around.
Why? Oh, I dunno. A glimpse from my past, I guess :)

Unemployed
General | Posted 12 years agoWell, as of last Friday, I'm unemployed.
I'm not destitute, as I have reserves to hold awhile. And the wife has her job. And truly I desperately need a bit of down time to get my memory straight, my sequencing ability back on track, and get my engineering fu sharpened. The past year has taken a severe toll on me, I'm afraid. And frankly, I just burned out.

Depression, and digging out
General | Posted 13 years agoThose of you in the know, no, things with my spouse are NOT good. Not good at all. Things in fact are spiralling toward that porcelain hole which is the end of this long chapter in my life.
But I'm trying to keep an eye to the sky and hope that God knows what he's doing. If this is necessary, I'll surrender to his will. But I wish it wasn't, and the wife would grow up and stop acting like a jailer and act like a wife again.
So instead, I'm treating the time period as a vacation. She won't sleep with me or talk to me? That means i"m actually getting rest for a change (and no, it doesn't mean she f***s me all the time -- she just snores like tractor). And that she's not screaming at me every other minute, which is enabling my memory to recover and recall systems long dormant to start functioning again.

Happy new year
General | Posted 13 years agoHere is hoping 2013 isn't as fucked up as 2012 and 2011 were. While certes, I bear some fault for the mess, 2/3 is not my fault yet I'm the only one trying to fix things.
At this rate, 2014 may find me single or dead. But I will try to make life work.

General | Posted 13 years agoI've been writing a scene for the latest My Tutor story, and it has been set in Zilker park. Looking at Google maps, I've been writing it so that it incorporates the correct current layout of the park.
Trouble is, my memory from 1994 is apparently slightly off. Zilker park isn't where I recall it being -- it's further down another road. So I have to change some directions they were given and some walking they do to put Zilker park in the middle of someplace not in zilker. But the good news is, I'll be able to incorporate the confusion into the story. The bad news is, I have changes to make.
Ah, fading memory, how you vex me sometimes.
