On My Tutor stories
General | Posted 13 years agoSome of you may be wondering, what happened to my plan to put the rest of the My Tutor stories up on here and in Sofurry.com? Well, what happened is thus:
"My Tutor has six Tails" was followed by "Final Exams", then "Graduation Day" and then the massive multichapter "Exchange Students". When going into my Story directory to bring up the source material and make it readable here, I discovered a serious problem -- said story wasn't in my computer. Nor on the backups, or the other copies of the directory saved here and there in my systems. It had vanished.
While I did find a copy in a backup of the ancient Blackbox website, it wasn't exactly ready to go. So I've been repairing the file to put it up. It won't be but a few more days. So the good news is that the story isn't totally lost; only the original Word document is (and no, I don't know how).
So no, I haven't forgotten. But somehow, the original file didn't make it to my main computer from whatever laptop I was using at the time to write with.

New SOP -- no working in garage when mad
General | Posted 14 years agoI was ticked off because I was very pressed for time. It was 1030pm and i'd been the dutiful hubby and stayed in the living room watching a movie with the wife and kids. And all through the night and all through the film, the wife couldn't shut up for more than 30 seconds at a time. You'd think the woman was paid by the word.
So I was frustrated and pressed for time, and I wasn't paying close enough attention to what I was doing. And I've since destroyed one logic analyzer, one embedded CPU, and may have damaged other stuff plugged into the USB chain. Not to mention possibly damaging my lab computer itself.
It's not the wife's fault. It is my fault for trying to work when I was in no way in condition for it. So I'll eat the costs and hope that the damages are minimal. Today I bring hardware back online one device at a time and see what functions and what does not.
Once in awhile, I need humbling. Today I'm having a nice big hunk of humble pie.

General | Posted 14 years agoBeta testing Vixen3.0 beta 0. once finished, there will be a lot of traffic jams in front of my house.
got sACN working correctly and the new MCU sees and handles the RGB data just fine and sends it to my DoDecas without a hitch. The nonRGB strings will need a triac board made, but I've already laid one out and just need to get some prototypes built. 5 should be enough at 8 channels each.
Lots to build. But amazingly enough, the hardest part is done already.
Failure analysis on the damaged light strips showed that the strips died due to flexing, as they were glued directly on the PVC pipes. Using foam tape in the future should prevent such torsion from busting the cheapass LEDs.
Waht I want next is a couple of those 50 light GE g35 strings. They have already been hacked and rigging a timer to do the bit twiddling would be child's play. But at 140$ a string, it's still a bit too dear for me to grab this year. Maybe when the prices come down. Course, that will require me to add a second universe to my system, which is funny as hell because I don't even have the first one running properly yet :)

More on Xmas 2012 plans
General | Posted 14 years agoI've dropped ARTNET in favor of sACN protocols. Basically the lab computer will output on a multicast address and my microcontroller will just pick it up and handle the data. Simple as pie. No need for handshakes or confirmation, it's a unidirectional data flow and if nothing hears then nothing hears. And while this will throw additional 20x1500bytes of packet data on my network... come on. 30K more of data on lines designed for 10MBytes/sec (and the router is a gigabyte router running Tomato with a 2.6 kernel) is so puny a load that it doesn't even bear noting, much less worrying about.
And these sACN routines are so much simpler. All the micro has to do is set up a listen to the multicast address and handle the data it sees on it. If not for the rest of my life, this could be running in under a week. Course, then I'd be miserable for the rest of the year, having nothing to build.

Hard drive prices declining again
General | Posted 14 years agoHard drive prices are expected to be back to normal about April. A little earlier than predicted. Prices are already coming down from the peak and things aren't as bleak anymore.
But if you are a customer of Western Digital (and that's ALL I use) the news isn't as good. It'll be autumn again before they are back to full capacity and you'll be able to get their drives once more. I just hope the quality doesn't sink because that's what I pay top dollar for -- I've only had one failed WD drive and that was at four years and WD replaced it for free, even after 4 years.
And there is always the concern that the first year of drives following the flood will be poorly built, as it takes time to get production running smooth again. So anybody buying drives over the next 2 years really needs to either back up really often, or have a raid1 running.

Next year's Christmas show
General | Posted 14 years agowill be running on a different processor. I'm going to jump up from the MCF5213 and use a 5270 instead. That'll let me have ethernet on the lights, and I can then pump DMX512 data directly into it just by running Vixen on the lab computer.
Now I need to master this new chip and teach it ARTNET protocols. Most of the existing code for the routines will drop right in (about 5000 lines) so that shouldn't be a problem. I've been wanting to work with ethernet on MCU's so this kills two birds with one stone. But gah, it looks like a big stone at this moment.
And my damned pick and place machine has a problem with vacuum. Not sure what the problem is, but no suction at the tip and no suction holding the boards down means I have a very heavy paperweight right now.

Avoid Hard Drive purchases for at least 1/2 a year
General | Posted 14 years agoFlooding in Thailand has ruined literally HALF of the factories and suppliers which make all of the hard drives on Earth. So the price of drives has tripled in only 1 month and is likely to top off at 5X the prices you paid just 2 months ago. That 1TB drive you wanted for Xmas for 99$? It's now 300$. And by Feb it is likely to be around 500$.
And the prices for prebuilt computers will likewise shoot up a couple hundred bucks each as well.
This situation will continue until the drive manufacturers and parts suppliers replace critical machines and recalibrate their factories and are running smooth once more and there are once again more drives to go around than demand. But right now, drives are already getting scarce. And by early next year you won't be able to buy much -- the big computer makers will take nearly all the production.

On Job's death
General | Posted 14 years agoSteve Jobs did NOT invent the personal computer. He was not an inventor - he was a businessman and a marketer who took something someone else created, and built a company out of it. Later, his knack for knowing what customers wanted allowed him to turn Apple into the juggernaut of technology that it is today.
But inventor of the personal computer? No. Inventor of the first personal computer COMPANY perhaps. But the accolades for creating the personal computer go to Steve Wozniak, not Jobs. If Wozniak had not designed the Apple1 and then the Apple2, there would have been no company.

Hobbylights available for craft makers!
General | Posted 14 years agoDo you like to build crafts? Would you love to be able to make stuff that shines and flickers, but you don't have any way to add lights to your stuff?
Now you can! http://hobbylights.net is a website I've created to sell my light modules. The modules are 2 x 2 inches and produce 1 billion different colors of light. Everything under the rainbow, litterally. You can buy them right online for only 35$ too -- shipping in the US is free.
The website has example videos, demos, sources for neat stuff to glow, and a forum where you all can show off your own creations with each other. If you are a clever builder in real life, now you can add brilliant lights to your projects in real life too.
Currently there are five versions of the Hobbylight:
Gentle - nothing but calm color transistions and swells.
Strobe - flashing lights with all kinds of color shifts and hard changes.
Flame - Fire simulator, giving flame appearance without a fire.
Combine - All of the above in a single unit.
Computer Case -- Lower powered version with combined programs specially for computer case mods.
Please give them a look if you like shinies -- I make some of the best.

Happy Newt Rear!!
General | Posted 15 years agoJust to be different :) May you all find a large gecko on your buttocks this year. And hopefully, he won't try to sell you insurance...
Merry Christmas to all!
General | Posted 15 years agoSnow or no snow, presents or no presents, family or no family, job or no job, for this one little day, LET yourself be happy just to be alive. May God's love fill your heart and give you new vision to make your life all that you want it to be. And know that no matter what, you are loved by friends all over the globe.
Peace on Earth. Or I'll kick the world's ass! :)

What's next to be banned
General | Posted 15 years agoHey, I don't have any dogs in this fight, so to speak. I'm not a fan of cub porn or whatever. However, never have I seen only ONE thing get banned, anywhere. Just look at SL, DeviantArt, Tripod, and others. Heck, all you have to do is look at Apple and what can and can't be sold in the app store. They started out only making certain the products weren't crooked. Then they banned porn, followed by swimwear, cartoons and more.
So what Dragoneer needs to do is have the forums on a second site and second machine. And the payments all go to keep THAT running. As far as the payment services are concerned, the payments are for the forum, not the art site that has no pay data attached to it. Then the payment people won't see any art or stories at all... nothing but a forum for people to chat on. So they'll have no reason to refuse payments for whatever prudish issues strike their fancy that week.
Simple
Like I said, I don't care anything about cub porn. But it won't be but a few months before they demand something else be taken away. And that, yes, I have a problem with. I also have a problem with trying to subject fictional material to real laws. I suppose I'll be arrested for writing crime stories next?
