Call for Commissions (taken from my dA)
Posted 12 years agoYes hello. I know I'm not very active but I thought I should post this here, too.
I'm in a very tight jar right now, hands tied behind my back, with very little options left. So of course it calls for a journal. I was about to nap, but this is wayyyy, way, way more important...
So remember when I fell and broke my ankle last year? That like, one-two nights in the hospital and surgery that cost like $14,000? Well I'm finally getting the collection calls from the hospital and from my physical therapist, because I definitely cannot shell out $14,600 and I've been too terrified to contact anyone about it. Yeah, that was my fault, I know. But anyway, now I'm in collections. $34.76 comes out of every one of my paychecks from now on until the entire balance is paid off, which means $69.52 every month, which is literally the difference between me being able to eat or not. I pay a very cheap, very generous rent of $300 dollars a month, but with me only working part-time (because I am a full-time student), it's a bit of a stretch.
And I have a car to avoid taking the public bus system, after having been mugged/robbed twice within a year. Which currently doesn't have a heater. And the midwest/eastern USA is in the middle of a second arctic blast.
I'm extremely fortunate that my roommates don't make me pay for water, heat, or internet+cable, because they know what my hours demand of me and such (one of my roommates also happens to be a co-worker of mine). I don't take that for granted, believe me. And they have a washer that I can use for my laundry, all I have to do is let them air-dry.
Bottom line: yes, I have it very, very well in comparison to others. I know that.
But I need to break down the math here:
I get around $9.50/hr after taxes and the money I donate to charity comes out of it. Maybe even a little less, because my actual rate is $10.22/hr, and I pay $5.00 out of every paycheck to United Way to help homeless kids and such. But let's just round to $9.50. I get an average of 17 hours of work per week. I get paid twice a month, on the 5th and 20th of each month. There are around 4 weeks in a month.
$9.50 x 17 = $161.50/wk
$161.50 x 4 = $646.00/month
$646.00 divided by 2 = $323.00/paycheck
Now, I only need to pay rent once a month, however, if I put out $300 on the spot for rent, I don't have enough in my account for the $34.76 that is now automatically deducted from said account. But anwyay.
$646.00
-$300.00 (rent)
-$25.00 (private student loan payments)
-$50.00 (average amount of gas per month, just going to and from work/school)
-$100.00 (I need to be eating a ton of food--I tried keeping it to $60.00 a month but it just doesn't work for me)
-$69.52 (hospital bill from ankle)
-$30.00 (I'm hoping I can pay that much per month for my physical therapy bill)
puts me at $51.48 by the end of the month. Lots of money, right?
Car is broken.
Parents want me home.
Tablet is wearing down.
I desperately need new shoes.
I need medication.
I need to go to psychiatric therapy, which I have stopped since December because I can't afford it.
I have another hospital bill from when I was in the mental hospital.
My parents often ask me for money.
What am I getting at?
Commissions are, like, eternally open. I'm making it my second job. I need to start using my skills and getting some portfolio-quality work out. People have been telling me that my art is improving incredibly quickly, and I hope that's true, because I really need to start saving up some money. I originally wanted to celebrate my 21st birthday this year by going to Australia and meeting up with devUser BooYeh, my long-time best friend, but that's going to have to go off for a little bit until I get these freaking bills paid.
I'll be working on a new commission sheet for 2014 while I make myself some food, but I'm going to be following the trails of some of my favorite artists and start offering something new: Livestream commissions.
From now on, every Saturday at 6:30 PM (18:30) Central Standard Time USA, I will be Livestreaming and streaming your commissions. Pricing will likely be $15.00 for fullbody coloured flats, $20.00 for something with shading, and anything else will need to be quoted before I start it. If you are in a timezone where that time will probably never work for you, you can reserve a spot so that I can still do your commission on-stream. There will be five slots open at a time, and I will do two slots per session.
It is very likely that I will try to set up another block of time for this as well. Each stream will last anywhere from 4-5 hours. I see these as a very popular revenue-generator for my fellow illustrators, so I thought I'd give it a try.
As for non-steam commissions, please note me if you have something. My current commission list is fairly up-to-date on my current asking prices. Help spread the word, even?
I will be announcing only the commission streams from here on out, on DeviantART. If you want to tune in to a personal stream, I usually make announcements on my tumblr (mechanic-coyote.tumblr.com).
Thanks for reading and for your support,
