Where the heck have I been?
Posted 4 months agoHi all!
I hope you're all doing well. Helix reminded me recently that I haven't touched my writing account in a while, and that's because I've been busy with a whole lot of stuff! Here's a rundown of what I've been up to:
Proofreading for the Noss Saga
I was picked up as a proofreader for the Noss Saga by Joaquin Baldwin (https://www.joaquinbaldwin.com/) last year. Relinquished Realms, now published, is the first book I worked on, and lately I've been hard at work proofreading book 4.
Anthology Writing
I've been working on stories for anthologies. A short 1000 word story of mine was recently published in Edwin@Work's Work "Fur" Hire anthology (https://workfurhirebook.carrd.co), and I'm writing a longer ~10,000 word story in hopes of getting it chosen for the "The Day After" anthology from TFpublishing. Fingers crossed! If it doesn't get picked, I'll be sure to post it here.
Visual Novel Writing
Edwin@Work has been putting a small visual novel together based around the story that was published in his anthology. I recently finished up a draft of the script for that.
Graphic Design for Kyell Gold
I've been creating a flyer for Kyell Gold's books. Not sure how much is appropriate to share about that, but the fact that I'm working on it was talked about on a stream recently, so at least I can say that.
Furry Fiction Showcases
I've been going around to cons putting on panels that showcase furry books, and creating handouts for them that give everyone a good rundown of the furry fiction world. Here's a link to one of those handouts: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1YK.....w?usp=drivesdk
Dealing for FurPlanet
I'm going to start helping out at the FurPlanet table at cons soon. My first time will be at Anthrocon this year. I've never done sales before, but I know a lot about the books, so should be interesting!
Reading and Reviewing
I'm reading so much furry fiction (20 or so books so far this year) and writing reviews for it. That's been super rewarding. There are so many incredible books out there. Happy to give recommendations.
Zweihander
I'm still in the planning stages for Zweihander. Currently I'm planning to commit to working full throttle on it once my current projects are done. I really need to get my own book out there. I'll be limiting myself to 1 additional project while working on that.
Hopefully that helps explain why I've been so quiet as of late! I'm still very active on Bluesky though, posting reviews and talking about writing, so follow me there if you'd like! https://bsky.app/profile/shilohskye.com

Wonderful Zweihander Poem by Corvid_Conquest

Check it out on his page, here!

He's open for commissions, which are very reasonably priced! So if you like this, consider commissioning some of your own poetry for your own work or characters or otherwise!
I'll be less active for a bit!
Posted 2 years agoHey everyone!
I usually do my absolute best to read everyone's stories and participate in Thursday Prompt, but I've decided I really need to buckle down and finish Zweihander. So, you may not see me as active as usual for a bit.
I'll still be around commenting on stories and answering notes. I'm just short on time, so I can't read and comment as much as I usually do for a few weeks.
Someday I'll quit my job and do editing, writing, and reading full time, but alas I have a 9 to 5 for now, and so I need to make concessions.
Just thought I'd let you know so you don't think that my lesser activity means something's wrong! I'll be back to my usual activity level soon enough. Hopefully with a finished Zweihander in tow.
Best,
Shiloh

Recommended Reading: Whalsay and the Wulver
Posted 2 years agoHey everyone!
There's a fantastic story I just read that I really want to share. You may have seen it passing by in your notifications already if you follow
vixyyfox or
SeaDragon. Nevertheless, I thought I'd point out that the story's great, and that you should definitely give it a read.
Whalsay and the Wulver is an ongoing collab story about a guy named Whalsay. He was raised by a society of Scottish folkloric beings called the Wulver, who are sort of 3/4-wolf creatures with a culture and language all their own. The story is about him setting out on a journey into the English and Scottish countrysides, and about how he just cannot seem to stop running into a menagerie of mystical animal creatures along the way.
It's a really fun read, with a plethora of quirky and interesting characters that just keep popping up to join the journey. It gives me big "Name of the Wind" vibes in that it's a first-person story with an engaging voice about a very interesting, capable, and larger-than-life character. Whalsay isn't nearly as prideful and godlike as Kvothe though, and that makes the story appealing to those who might want a more-relatable protagonist. Plus there are furries, so it's automatically more relatable to us folks.
You can give it a read on either Vixyy's or SeaDragons' pages below!

My First Journal. Coffee Problems! The Grind.
Posted 2 years agoI figured it was about time to write a journal. Hmmm, what should I talk about?
Ah, yes! Writing. That seems on brand.
I spend a lot of time in coffee shops. Every morning I wake up at 5:30, commute to said coffee shop, and write for an hour and fifteen minutes before going to my job. It's all the writing I have time for, and it requires me overcoming morning bed gravity, but it's still 5 or so hours every weekday, so I'd say that's probably better than it could be!
However, I have two big problems each and every morning:
First, I'm easily distracted. I'm in a coffee shop bright and early right now, actually, updating my FA profile description and, indeed, writing this journal instead of finishing Zweihander Part 2. It's frustrating. Once I get writing, I practically can't stop, but getting over that hump to actually begin is a herculean task sometimes. It's demoralizing. I can feel my self-esteem decaying by the minute.
Second, I write slowly. Painfully slowly. I average about 500 words per hour, and they're not particularly good words, in my opinion. For every hour writing, I'll probably spend 2 hours editing, with mixed results as you can probably tell. The first part of Zweihander took what felt like an age! Civilizations rose and fell before I finished that story. It makes me quite self-conscious. Hopefully it's something that gets better with time. I did, after all, only get back into writing a few months ago after a ten year stretch of distractions.
I'm interested in hearing what others think of my two big problems. I'm sure they're not unique to me! And I'd like to see how others deal with them.
In other news, I'm grappling with the stress of a new job at the moment, which is going pretty well despite said grappling! But the grind does take away from my capacity for writing, so you may see the effects of that. I'm also working on Zweihander Part 2 and a submission for Edwin's Job Interview Prompt compilation, so my Thursday Prompts might be a bit short or nonexistant for a bit! Please forgive me.
Anyway, I hope you're doing well! Have a good week/month/year everyone!
