Reflections on 'Neer
Posted a year agoI'm a bit late posting about this, partially because I really was never sure what to say, and partially because I never directly met the guy myself.
But one thing that really struck me as I saw journal after journal being posted here on FA was just how many people have met him, known him, had a lot to say far and above him simply being the guy who ran the world's biggest furry site.
And lord knows it is *The* Furry Site. Say what you will about Xitter or Telegram or Discord or SoFurry or InkBunny or Weasyl (or laugh about e621), but it's incredibly, incredibly difficult to "be a furry" without having staked a profile on FA. It feels to me like FA is almost the furry version of the SSA - like, "check my FA activity/notes" is always the way I see people say when fighting impersonation in the furryverse. Even with SoFurry being older, even with the wave of sites like Weasyl that popped up in the mid-teens, nothing eclipses FA. It isn't perfect, but it's where everyone checks in with who they are as a member of the furry fandom, even if they only ever just make a profile to show who they are and then leave it to go exist on other sites (like me over on SoFurry, though I still regularly use FA for buying YCHs/comms/etc.). Not to mention that FA is one of the few sites these days that simply isn't subject to an algorithm - it's a proper gallery site with enough interactivity to give artists what they need for their business and such.
That's a massive system to manage, and 'Neer did that for almost two decades. Do you know how many sites have come and gone in that time? I think it's clear from that, as well as from how many people he directly touched, just how much 'Neer cared about the fandom overall. The closest I ever got to meeting him was being in the same FurTheMore charity auction where he ended up going super-high on one particular item (that, IIRC, admittedly deserved more than what the crowd was giving at the time, either being a fandom history thing or a mostly-no-longer-active artist - IIRC) and it's clear that most people actually do have a direct convention story with him, or at least having him pop in on one of the art streams or similar. It's honestly quite impressive.
He certainly wasn't perfect - there was that extracted episode with how he handled then-friends Zaush and JasonFX(sp?) on FA before everntually banning (and unfriending?) them - but no one is perfect. I don't think there's any argument that he was a massive pillar of the fandom. Furry wouldn't have grown from the IRC days to where it is now without his work maintaining FA.
Even though I didn't directly know him, his passing got me more emotional than I thought it would. Part of it was that overwhelming response of everyone sharing stories of interacting with him, seeing just how many people he directly touched in addition to keeping FA running. Another part was that, even though I never actually met him, I have been following him on FA for years (he did a fair amount of vore as well, so that was always fun to see) and on BlueSky since I moved there. As such, I've followed his declining health for months, and that extracted process was just brutal to watch. What hurts the most is that he finally got the surgery to get biopsies done last week, and was expecting a diagnosis within a week from that... And hoping to begin recovery in a month or two. Having everything ripped out from under that is cruel beyond belief - and that's to say nothing of being strung along for months and slapped with massive bills on top of it all.
My heart goes out to FelisRandomis - someone I've also followed for ages and currently incredibly close to 'Neer. I don't want to think of what exactly happened with his passing. I hope the necessary grieving and recovery isn't harmed by the excessive hospital bills and/or social media pressure. It's a bit scary even for me right now as I'm still currently between jobs and right health insurance...
This is just a reminder to reach out to your friends often, and do your best to make the fandom the best place it can be. You're here. That's what matters.

Two years ago, I opened for some quick single-scene vore story requests where people would get 800-1000 words with any of my characters, and I kinda want to do that again! As I am very recently unemployed, though, I'm going to treat these are regular story commissions instead of free requests *BUT* offer steep discounts for any vore commissions for the holiday! (I do write more than just vore, you know!) I'm offering 18% off any vore commission, and a whopping 50% off the short single-scene ideas! If you place your order in the month of July, I'll post these on or leading up to 8/8 itself; if you ask within a week of 8/8, I will do my best to get it ready for the holiday but make no guarantees per existing commission rules. For examples of what these look like, check out the old ones in my vore story folder on SoFurry.
RULES:
Comment below or DM me with a one-sentence description of a quick vore scene you want between one character of your choice and one of my characters from the list below. (And yes you can choose another one of my chars as the "your choice" slot if you want!) Auxiliary characters are allowed to help set the scene but shouldn't be the focus. If you have more than one idea, you can mention them, but I will only do one at a time and make sure I get to other people's stories before doing a second for the same person. All existing commission rules apply.

Since I'm between jobs, I'm gonna aim to write at least one story per week, primarily any commissions I get, and any of my own stories if my queue is empty. If you don't want a commission but still enjoy my writing, I would greatly appreciate the occasional Ko-fi donation to help keep my afloat until my next job starts!

We all know Twitter is very likely going to fully implode soon. I'm available on both Cohost and Mastodon (meow.social) with the same username I always use, skynero19
PSA for Mastodon, meow.social in particular: they are fully freezong both new sign-ups AND invites. Their recommendation now is to go to https://furryfediverse.org/ and find other furry servers to populate! Another note is that their native app isn't good (yet) and they recommend MetaText for iOS and Tusky for Android.

Patreon questions
Posted 8 years agoI'm looking for input/advice for use of Patreon - not for me personally, though. The student orchestra I'm in at school (twelve years old now) is looking at starting a Patreon page as an auxiliary source of funding. We only put on one concert per semester, and all we perform is (essentially?) under creative commons - we can't sell recordings of our music (and we don't charge admission to our concerts) as we don't have the rights to do so with the songs that we perform. I'm not incredibly familiar with the inner workings of Patreon - all I know is that you offer various levels of funding and are expected to give rewards for each level of funding.
My main questions are these:
Is there an expected/required schedule for the rewards that are given? i.e. is once a semester enough? Or would we need to do more/less? Can we do one-off rewards, e.g. the minimum patronage level means you get your name added to a "Patrons" list on our website? Is it taboo or not to offer rewards that require knowing a Patron's address, i.e. a physical reward that needs mailing?
Any advice is highly appreciated!

Apparently today was "Bowser Day". All fans of the king koopa got to indulge and what not. Several tweets later, I settled on February 28th, the 59th day of the year (Arcanine is #59 in the national Pokedex) as a suggested celebration for everyone's favorite firedog! =-D
It's a ways off, but I just wanted to get it written down and sow the potential seeds for making Arcanine Day a big thing.

FA UI beta
Posted 10 years agoAesthetically, it certainly LOOKS much better - not nearly as blocky as before. The site finally looks more like a modern site. No earth-shattering changes, it still definitely looks and feels like FurAffinity - just smoother and crisper.
Functionally, there's no major difference that I have encountered yet. I haven't tried to submit something, though, so I don't know if the process there has changed or not. There are some layout changes, though, that I'm a little iffy on.
1. The front page. It's nice having the journal/announcement thing on the right. However, to make room for that, they took away the split category thing for new submissions to reduce the total number of new submissions showing on the front page. And, with no separate literature designation on the front page now, it essentially means it'll be impossible to catch written work on the front page any more. As a writer, I am not happy about that.
2. User profile pages. Everything's been shuffled around. The user profile info is no longer at the top of the page, you have to scroll down to see it. In its place is where the submissions/favorites are, but like with the front page, things have been compressed - now you can either see the user's latest submissions OR the user's latest favorites, but not both at the same time, it's a toggle option. That's not as bad as losing the literature from the front page, or as bad as the user profile info now being secondary, but it's still a bit annoying.
The new beta is a step or two in the right direction, I think, but since it's functionally nearly identical to the previous version, I think there's still definitely improvements to be had.

Minor bug report: images that are wider than your screen don't produce the L-R scroll bar when you try viewing them full size. (example: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/16036317/ , vore for radarn) I assume this is just a beta bug and not a serious coding problem. If you hit "download" to view the image in a screen by itself, it's fine.

The text in your message center and in user's favorites galleries are messed up, the username for a particular submission being ran up against the end of the submission's title. Also, the grey/blue/red border on submissions designating maturity level is much harder to see ATM.

The story in question has one big pred (I want to say dragon or bear) abduct, abuse, and eat a couple (I want to say both canine). The pred is rather heartless and matter-of-factual, I think knocking the two boyfriends out, taking them to a warehouse of sorts - his center of operations, eating one to cause the most emotional agony of the other, and then forcing that other to give him bellyrubs and/or submit sexually.
If this sounds familiar to anyone, please let me know!

~Step 1~
Make a post in your journal containing your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple to really big. The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.
If you wish for real-life things, make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where folks could get in touch with you.

Surf around other lists to see who has posted their list. If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use--or even know where you could get someone's dream for free--do it. You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf--to spread the joy! Gifts can be made anonymously or not--it's your call. There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special!

6. Pokemon cards! Seriously, the guys at the Pokemon club at school got me back into the TCG after almost 10yrs away from it. (I also like MTG.)
7. For anyone who lives near me, I'd love a workout buddy to finally help me get on a good workout schedule. Heck, simply hanging out with local furs way more often would be great!
8. UNDERWEAR. Not the generic stuff, though - think Gregg Homme and Cocksox and Nasty Pig... My waist is anywhere between 30 and 32, depending on the cut and designer. For comparison, I fit nicely in the smalls from Andrew Christian (28-30), but when I buy pants I usually have to get pairs that are anywhere from 31-33. *shrugs* (In particular, I would loooove getting some Cocksox, either the CX01 Briefs or CX05 Thongs - red, blue, or yellow!)
9. To at least know what it's like to have a partner, even knowing that finding "the one" on the first try is near impossible
10. And the BIG ONE - I want to see as many people as I can at Fur the 'More this coming May!

A WINNER IS ME! And other news
Posted 11 years agoYes, I did it! I successfully wrote 50k words in 30 days - 29, actually! I'm going to finish the chapter I'm in, then take a day or two of rest from writing. Then it's back to my gay furry smut! And I'll re-open my commissions as well (which I guess I never officially closed over here on FA.... whoops). But for now, celebration! (And rest!)

New vore chars?
Posted 11 years agoSo I've had a few other character ideas bouncing around in my head recently; just thought I'd run them by you all to maybe get the final ideas (and names) to really flesh these characters out.
Wolf, big guy - looks, seems, and acts like a dommy pred, but fate always conspires against him so that even when it looks like he has a situation completely under his control, something happens and he ends up being prey and/or topped (unless someone is specifically after his knot, which is generously sized - he does look and act like the dom, after all!)
Rabbit, younger, small but incredibly fit - thin, muscular, and very self-confident. Believably a pure top, though he does switch. In fact, he's all about role reversal - he loves bottoming to twinks and femboys while topping anyone studlier than him, and he also loves to eat typical-pred-species furs, (though he'll eat anyone,) and he only gets eaten by other rodents or maybe songbirds.
(Note: I imagined the wolf and rabbit to be compliments and a common pairing, which would be a first among my chars which usually don't exist in the same world)
Clydesdale, obviously tall, somewhat sporty. He's a stud physically, but quiet and shy in general - he only gets energetic and loud in situation where he's very comfortable (i.e. hanging out with close friends, getting his breeding instinct awakened, etc.) He likes fitting big this into small places - one, he's generally a top since it's a lot easier to find guys much smaller than him to breed than it is to find guys much bigger than him to bottom to, and two, he likes feeding small guys big meals, be it lots of normal food, another fur, or especially himself! He'll be a pred, too, (like he's not opposed to bottoming,) but he doesn't take much pleasure out of it - he'll only eat people if they ask him to eat them, and even then he'll treat them much more like food than like a conquest, prize, or lover.
Sergal, average build - I kinda want a good tailvore character and can't really image any of my current ones as changing their tails enough to have a believable tailmaw. X-D This guy would be pure top & pure pred, my only character who doesn't do any switching.
Thoughts? Additions? Name ideas?

MarylandFurs got my attention, so now I'm officially registered for next year's FurtheMore! It's going to be in the DC area next May, so it'll be all the more easier for me to attend! Still debating on whether to get a hotel room for those two nights or just take the Metro trains to and from Tyson's Corner each day. Anyone else considering going? I'm up for room sharing!

So, earlier today, another vore image hit my inbox. Nothing too odd about that by itself. But it was another image of a Feraligatr with a Charizard in its belly. I got kinda miffed, because the impression I've been getting for a long time now was that the vore community hates Charizard. So I went into FA's search feature and looked. Nope, the vast majority of Charizard vore images have the 'zard as the pred. So am I just being butthurt? (I will freely admit to being slightly typist.)
Turns out, no to that as well. I went through the search results, and these are the Charizard images made in the past year+ by vore artists I watch:

Nope, the vast majority of Charizard vore images have the 'zard as the pred. So am I just being butthurt? (I will freely admit to being slightly typist.)

So, according to what's hit my inbox, Charizard is prey 85% of the time. Even not counting my inbox, a good fifth or so of all Charizard vore images come from two particular blue Pokemon preds. Apparently it's just a really ugly coincidence that there's a big overlap between artists they interact with and artists I watch. X-D
FA:U anyone?
Posted 11 years agoSo, as time has gone on, I've been reflecting on Fur the 'More and slowing growing a desire to go to another con, and just waiting around for the next Fur the 'More makes me antsy. I know it's getting a bit late to ask around, but it anyone planning on going to FA:U in a little over a month? I know there are conventions with a bit more lead-up time, but I have travel limitations, so I need to stay relatively close to DC. Anyway, are there any DC-area furs going? For the whole con, or just a day or two, doesn't matter to me! I still haven't decided if I 100% want to go, but pre-reg ends at the end of July, so if there's anyone willing to carpool and/or share a room, that would help. =-) (I'd pay my share, of course.)

Pokemon World Cup!

Adidas announced that Pikachu will be the mascot for Japan's National Football Team at this year's world cup in Brazil, and the Pokemon website has reported that Pikachu will be bringing along (almost) a full team of 'mons available in Kalos as mascots as well.
I'm not sure whether to laugh at this or not. X-D
