ANIMATION: Rootle Up Dance!

FA submission: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/21316196/

Okay, I was always planning on submitting this character to UNC-TV Kids, once I had a chance to test the rig on a couple actual animations.
However, last weekend they announced a dance contest for their audience, and I couldn't resist taking a crack at it. (Particularly since posting it where I did automatically granted them rights to use it in promotions. I didn't submit til after the contest deadline and made it clear that this was NOT intended to compete in the contest, as I didn't wanna take away some kid’s chance at a prize!) Then, over the past 2.5 days, I rendered out the full 1080p version, for y'all to see. Enjoy!

How do you imagine other people?
General | Posted 10 years agoQuestion for folks on here. When you think about other people (other than face to face) do you usually:
• Think about their relationships with you and what you could talk about or do together? or
• Think about their relationships with other people, and what they might talk about or do with others?
My suspicion is that there are plenty of people who do each of these, but that each person primarily only does one or the other. I don't know of any personality test that checks this or what it would imply, psychologically speaking, but if anyone knows any existing terms related to this, let me know! :D This has more to do with something I'm researching in art technique, rather than sociology or psychology tho'.

ANIMATION: Uptown Fox
General | Posted 10 years agohttps://youtu.be/F02xP_SxuwUJust a rigging test of a 3D character I've been working on. Still have some bugs to work out, but it's progressing by leaps and bounds!
Also, I need a better animation computer, this took all day to render.
NEW ANIMATION OUT: Moonshower!

"Does Luna sing in the shower?"
My first full pony animation in something like 2 years! Based on https://derpiboo.ru/300603 by John Joseco, I've been working on this, off and on, since before Everfree NW 2013. Finally, FINALLY got it finished, thanks in part to some motivational monetary prodding from Patreon.

Back to Carolina
General | Posted 11 years agoOkay! So I completed the job in Boston, and couldn't find more animation work there - or anywhere atm, so I had to head back to the parents' for a while. Mmm, Asheville NC tho'. I only have a truck to unload, while Boston has two MORE feet of snow to deal with - so that was about the perfect time to leave!
I've completed the move, and escaped the snowpocalypse! So yeah, a little unpacking to do but back to working on commissions in the meantime. I have four in the queue, which means I don't have time to take on any additional valentine's day work, but if y'all would like anything else, feel free to note me! I should be finishing up these four this week, so put your thinkin' caps on if you want some arts or animation. :B
As usual, my work is priced based on a $20 hour as follows:
Detailed Sketch: $20/character
Full Inks: $30/character
Flat Color: $40/character
Full Color: $50/character
Minimal background: +$20
Full background: +$40
Motion graphics (simple): $18/sec
2D animation: $50/sec
Flash animation (with existing puppet): $40/sec
3D animation (with existing rig): $30/sec
3D character model (not rigged): $180+ depending on complexity

Makin' Progress
General | Posted 11 years agoIn case you missed the pretty picture, I opened a Patreon yesterday! And I already got my first supporter, YAY!
But I figure that the place most people see me workin' on my stuff is on my stream. So, today I spent a buncha time figuring out javascript, and jquery, and copying css and html from Patreon's site and image editing, and now I have a cooOOol little support button on my stream page that pops open when you click it to offer a place to pledge support! Even with a little animated slide! :D
Then this evening I was fussing around with textures in Blender, and I FINALLY figured out how to paint a bump map directly on a combined texture in the viewport! Then proceeded to spend the next hour exporting all the GIMP and Gimp-Paint-Studio brushes to pngs, and then learned how to paint with a textured brush into the texture channel! So all in all, it's been a pretty neat day. =)
I'm still wide open for commissions for stuff too, I have one big illustration in the pipeline as soon as the commissioner (I always feel like Batman talking about the commissioner) gets me the deets, and then two potential 3D model commissions that haven't yet pulled the trigger to order yet. So if anyone wants any art, lemme know, my latest pieces have had commission rates on them to match! :D
And if you want to support me doing my own thing with animation, like I did with Lyravator & Beep Beep, and am planning on doing with the 3D characters I'm building for Nothing, or even going back and working on Citrapop - feel free to throw me some support at my Patreon! :D

WHAT SHOULD I PATREON HALP
General | Posted 11 years agoSo, I've been thinking lately about starting up a Patreon account.
Thing is, I don't have a clue what people expect from me. I make big animated productions that take months, I make cute scribbles that take hours.
SO
What I want to know is - what would you expect to see on *my* Patreon, if you're giving financial support?
Would you expect a per-project Patreon tipping, or a per-month?
And, if it's per-project, what kind of work would you want me to make an Official Paid Patreon Project?
Obviously, expecting the same support for a sketch and a three month involved animation project would be silly.
Should I break projects up into scenes? If I started working on Citrapop (not likely) or Nothing (more likely!) would you expect each individual finished scene to be a Patreon Work? Or just the entire massive thing?
And, regardless of the official Patreon stuff, what would you expect as Patreon-supporter-only content, if you were offering the monies? Streams? Concept sketches? I mean, I live off a lot of this stuff from public support too, so I don't exactly know what to restrict to Patreon. I don't know how many perks or whatnot I could put on there, since creating perks would largely distract me from the work of actually getting anything done.
So in short, if you're the sort of person who does financial support via Patreon, let me know what should go on there!
I'm working on building the page here, but it's not live-for-donations yet: http://www.patreon.com/snapai :D

Been a while since I've journaled.
General | Posted 12 years agoBut, it occurs to me that you all don't know I'm here unless I say something.
So, uh. Hi. What's been going on with you internet?
I'm still looking for a new animation job.
Or to be more specific: I'm -now- looking for a new animation job. I took a bit of a vacation that I think I very much needed.
I'm hoping to find something that will give me a reason to move. I don't have any grand illusions of a studio paying me to fly out to them (though it'd be nice), but I really want to be among other amazing artists. Besides just when I'm sitting at my computer at home.
I want to be around people who are doing things, creating things, because I can't really find that here.
I wasn't able to attend Equestria LA - well that's not right. I chose not to attend EQLA because I didn't want to bleed savings so quickly. I still intend to attend Everfree NW, though I have yet to arrange lodging.
It used to be that finding a way into my career was everything- I have spent 10 years of my life training my way into being able to do animation professionally.
Suddenly it occurs to me that that is nowhere near enough for me. I'm not a very social person, but I want to find more amazing people to be around- not just to work with and learn from, but because I need friends, and romance, and family, and all that stuff. I haven't had much opportunity to find a very full life in that regard, and that's why I really want to be around people. I love my handful of friends here in NC, but - I'm sick of love being something that other people have, and something you say on the phone in case the worst happens. Something you see everyone else experiencing at the company barbeque, or the group picnic, while you sit there and try to not look out of place.
At any rate, I'm still hoping to wind up in LA, or Palo Alto, or Seattle, or Vancouver, or somewhere, eventually. NYC might be neat, but I'm not sure even with a job I could afford to live there, even in the suburbs.
If anyone knows anywhere I should be looking to for a job with, please let me know.
If anyone knows any awesome punchy artsy girl who'd love a 32-near-33 (May 31st) silly animator d00d who likes dragons and ponies, let me know that too. :)

Out of a job - moving along
General | Posted 13 years agoI've been rather quiet on this journal, as I've been busy.
After Las Pegasus,
kurradragon messaged me and said "Hey, are you going to Cloudcon? It's like, 10 minutes from here!" So with only a week's notice, I registered for the con, and joined the group from Double Rainboom doing the panel. Cloudsdale Congress was a blast- got to hang out with a bunch of folks I had seen just a couple weeks before, got to see the live crowd reaction to the first half of the film as well as see it on a huge screen and speaker setup, which was awesome! Made a bunch of new friends, hung out with old friends, got to show the film to the Crebers and the convention staff. And even got to have Fuddruckers for lunch on Sunday, which I miss since they had left the central NC area.
As I left the con on Sunday, I started coming down with a terrible cold. After crashing on Kurra's couch for an hour (literally knocked flat by the cold), we did the tinkering on my car we had planned to do while I was there (swapping out the spark plugs/wires), and I headed home.
And then went into work Monday, still with the cold, because my supervisor was flying in to visit that day- and was informed I was being let go.
Now honestly? This didn't come as a surprise. There had been belt-tightening and weirdness all over for a while, and I had been called into a videoconference a month ago and told my job was on the line, and in the meantime my supervisor had been taking "difficult conversation training". And then announced he was coming to visit. And....really, I was sick enough it didn't even bother me- I just wanted to go home and rest up, which is what I've been doing the rest of this week.
...this is I think when people usually say how lucky they are to have their girlfriend, fiancee, wife, etc to support them - but I haven't had that sort of luck, so yeah.
I am however, lucky enough to have savings to last me a few months while I find a new job - and an apartment that has just become month-to-month. So the next few weeks will be a lot of portfolio/reel polishing, and emailing - trying to find an animation job that will actually ask me to animate things.
Once I'm over this darn cold.
If I don't go stir crazy, first, being stuck in an apartment with nothing but my cat. @_@
So yeah....y'all's support and well wishes are much appreciated.

General | Posted 13 years agoHad an awesome new years party.
Played some videogames, hung out with friends, played board games, had light mixed drinks, played videogames, sober by home-time, altogether a really good time.
Well except for the actual New Years countdown, where we rung in the New Years by me getting to watch three happy couples kissing.
Haven't felt more in the wrong place than in that moment, in quite a while.
Anyways, they're all still great friends. I just need to find somewhere additional to socialize than in this sausagefest you all call a fandom. Which btw, is why I haven't been posting as much here.
I would like to think that the furry fandom is a fandom for fans of animal anthropomorphic (given human traits) characters in art and media. That IS the definition of furry and it always has been. As a cartoon fan and animation artist, that certainly is some of my favorite media, it's practically my chosen field, it's what I hope to enjoy drawing for a very long time.
However.
It has been recently pointed out to me by certain people that FA is not that.
FA was always supposed to be a tolerant art site that focuses on furry art. But have you seen what it's about now? It is largely about solo male or male/male or fetishy porn, with a furry slant. And yes, I mean, that exists, that's OK. But don't expect that to have any meaning or connection for me.
You see, I'm a guy. Who's interested in women for romance. GASP, yes, I know that's unusual on here. And that's part of the problem. I'm also a professional artist, so even when I DO draw the adult stuff (what, I'm not a kid) you won't see it online. It's just not something I share. And because that seems to be most of what you all focus on, I am beginning to worry whether having myself associated here is that great of an idea. For that reason, my gallery is locked to guests, and my favorites are now off. (I do wish FA would just give a 404 to un-signed-in users tho').
I wish you all could be there for me. I wish I could find an awesome cute artist girl on here to like, hang out with, woo, date, more? But let's face it, there aren't many people like that here, who aren't snatched up by the first pretty charismatic face they meet. And as for my art, a lot of you don't even like the pony stuff I've been drawing for the past year and a half. I draw it because I enjoy it. I seldom come here and post it or share it because it doesn't get much reaction.
So yeah. I'm not leaving here per se. "leaving the fandom" is a ridiculous idea. But you all aren't doing much to hold my interest here, and I'll spend time where I find it rewarding to do so.
Anyways. I hope 2013 is better. I hope I find love. I hope my job moves towards telling great stories with my animation, or I find some other way to do so. I hope I keep my friends, and make new ones, but I hope I don't have reason to envy them in the future. My new years resolution then is simple: stop holding myself back from finding all the awesome I can manage to seek out.
Anyways, "Happy" New Years to you all.

How to find me at Everfree NW
General | Posted 13 years agoI'm going to Everfree - in fact, I'll bee there this evening, and I'll be staying in the Holiday Inn tonight, and the Marriott the rest of the con.
How to find me there? I'll be wearing a badge that says Snapai, of course, but aside from that, look for this laptop: http://i.imgur.com/BTYZd.jpg
or this filmstrip badge: http://i.imgur.com/VLBqq.jpg
I certainly don't bite, so if you see me, feel free to chat, I don't know how many people I'll know well there, so I'll definitely be looking for folks to hang out with! :D

Oh yeah, I do have a Tumblr sketchblog
General | Posted 13 years agoParticularly now that I've figured out how to link it to Twitter, you're gonna see most of my scrappy doodles wind up over here instead of in my gallery. :D

And you know me, it'll be safe-for-work. :D

I want one of the Derpy Hooves con-exclusive toys
General | Posted 13 years agoThat last bit is the problem. With as big as the brony fandom is now and as popular as Derpy is? Those things are gonna sell like Tickle Me Elmo. Like the Wii on its release date. Like ROOMS AT THE WESTIN. :S I think.
So....can anyone help me get ahold of one? I only want one, and I don't trust my own luck to get me to HasbroToyShop just as they go on sale. As far as I've heard, they should have a $20 pricepoint (they are a larger, collectible figurine, than the regular toys).
Best part is, since they are hugely popular, and limited edition/exclusive, if I manage to get one and you manage to get one for me, you *should* be able to recoup your expense easily on eBay too! :D
(of course, watch me worry all about this now, and they wind up having ordered several thousand and they don't all sell or something. :P)
EDIT: GOT IT! http://twitpic.com/a8i0jy
Call me, beep me, if ya wanna reach me~

General | Posted 13 years ago"...you don't even. care. do you?" -- GLaDOS
You will NOT find me at a dealers or alley table. I'm there to have fun. Look for me in the zoo, or attending some of Jim Martin's panels, or wandering around having fun. If I am VERY VERY LUCKY I will have my new laptop with me, but don't count on it (it will arrive anytime between now and the day AFTER I leave for con, ugh)
um
please invite/take me with you if you're having fun of any sort (dances, lunch, hangin' out, whatever), I only know like two or three people to hang with at AC, and they're probably mostly gonna be busy with other stuff. ;A;

About commissions.
General | Posted 13 years agoLook, I have had the occasional person ask me if I'm "open for commissions", as if this was some sort of binary state where an artist is either "open for commissions" or "closed for commissions".
It's not like that, here. I have an art job. Outside of the art job, I am desperately trying to figure out how to survive, have a life, and maybe get some friends, maybe some romantic interest someday.
I do not close for commissions, and I do not open for commissions. If you want me to do art, and you are willing to make it WORTH MY WHILE to do so among all that, then feel free to contact me about what you want.
I don't have a price list, I'm not a freaking vending machine. If I like your idea, and it sounds like something that strikes me as really fun to do, I might do it for cheap, hell, I might not even charge you if I'm having THAT much fun. If what you want me to make offends me, I might outright refuse. Same if it seems so dull or not-my-thing that I know it'll never get done. Commissions aren't my concern for source of income right now. So if you want art from me, you're going to have to request a proposal for how long what you want will take, when I will be able to start, and how much it might cost.
Personally, I think all of you who get flooded with too much to do when you open for commissions are a bit silly. If demand for your art is so high that you have to open a batch then close for a while? YOU ARE CHARGING TOO LITTLE. Raise your prices, and see if you can find something that gives you about as much work as you want to handle, without having to flipflop all the time. Granted, stuff like iron artist can be fun, and if you're having fun, more power to ya. But this "Open 5 slots for Type Q commissions for $40 apiece!" - *5 minutes later* "All slots are taken, better luck next month!" thing? ...if you can get 5 people to jump for that in 5 minutes, try charging double next time. :P
I dunno, just felt like rambling on about this. I think my new Lenovo X-Tablet I ordered ships to me tomorrow! Whee, portable digital art. <3

Your Strengths are Whatever You Like
General | Posted 13 years agoI was thinking tonight, that I wish I could do more of what I want to do.
Then I got the strangest thought that that sort of confidence in life might be a sort of Dumbo's Feather- if you think you can, that might be all you need.
So, like any reasonable modern person faced with an existential question, I did the sensible thing: I plugged it into Google.
I ran into an article, talking about the philosophy of "You can do anything you want to do, if you just apply yourself for long enough", and the opposite philosophy of "You're only good at certain things, so focus on your strengths, and avoid your weaknesses". It tried to pit them head-to-head in a battle, and largely didn't come to many conclusions.
But it occurs to me that that was flawed, because those two philosophies are not, in fact, opposites.
The reason doing whatever you really want to is such a powerful tool, provided you don't talk yourself out of it (like I do rather frequently), is that if you want to do something? Odds are pretty good your strengths lie along that path, even if it's totally different from the normal activity or courses of study you pursue on a daily basis. Think about it- if it wasn't the sort of thing you like to think about, or the way you like to act or think, would it really be that interesting?
And besides, if it really is NOT something that's along the lines of what you're good at, once you try it, how long are you really going to continue doing it before you discover that you really DON'T want to do it anymore.
So yeah. Try things that are outside of your normal habits or behaviors. Because if they appeal to you, there's a good chance that you've already been exposed to enough information to know on SOME level that it's actually something you'd enjoy doing.

HOW TO DO A SPLITSTREAM
General | Posted 13 years agoJust figured out something cool.
If you use Tinychat, you can set up your own channel so you have to permit people to stream, they don't do so automatically.
This. Changes. EVERYTHING!
That means you can use TinyChat to do say, a two or three artist stream, where everyone else only can chat in the text chat, but there are multiple artists working in the stream.
Which means, like, you could do collaborative streams, or group project streams, or "See six awesome artists stream simultaneously" events or whatever! I want to plan something now XD
