On the future of Storytelling...
General | Posted 13 years agoI just posted a long comment to a DA hot topic article, and since it's longer than my usual journal, I thought I'd post it here. :D
[original article on DA]
[my comment on that article]
I don't see any issue with listening to community input, considering that the commercial model is already well-suited for it.
Take your average TV series. There's possibly dozens of writers coming up with ideas for the show, and beyond their editors, the ideas have to go through a director or show-runner before they're authorized to be canon and included in the show. With a movie, it's the same thing - concept artists, writers, storyboard artists, all have their input and work with the director, who decides what single storyline winds up being the final path.
The concern of dedicated fans is that their favorite storyteller will be taken "offline" if fan input is allowed. It's a valid concern, considering the number of moviemakers who have complained about "direction via committee" - where the director is basically a figurehead, and all his or her decisions have to be approved by marketing and the board of producers before they can go into the series. But in the case where you still have a storyteller, director, or showrunner, that won't happen, even if you vastly expand the idea funnel to include the audience or the internet.
The other issue here, is that the perception of authorship doesn't change when the storyteller is changed. Take the latest TMNT movie. The fact that it is named "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" means that, for fans of that franchise, the story must still stick to the original storytellers, Eastman and Laird. Or at least remain faithful to the story they told! If it was called "Michael Bay came up with his own movie about alien turtles who fight crime!" NO-ONE WOULD SEE IT. Because we don't trust Michael Bay as a storyteller, even though that's effectively his job on the movies he directs. We trust him to give us action and explosions and gratuitous stuff, but does anyone at the end of the day say "Wow, that Michael Bay, he's a great storyteller"? Of course not.
Granted, you can change storytellers, provided that the new one is a talented storyteller in his or her own right, and tries to stay true to the original story. There'll be a slight shift in style, but it can still stay mostly agreeable. Take the latest My Little Pony series. The storyteller (showrunner) for season 1 was Lauren Faust. In season 2, they switched to Jayson Thiessen. Both good storytellers, but you can tell that the style shifted slightly. That hasn't deterred the fans for the most part, however. If there was no showrunner, and the stories were based strictly on Hasbro's marketing numbers, the popularity of the show would take a nosedive. Yet, the showrunners DO take input both from Hasbro, and to a small extent, from the internet at large.
Being an effective storyteller has always been about balancing your own creative ideas with entertaining your audience, and with the internet providing input, that's no different. Storytellers just have to remember to keep both sides of the coin in mind, and remember that quite often, the audience would prefer the storyteller's spin on their input rather than a story written solely by poll or committee.

Pressure Sensitive Galaxy Tab! :D
General | Posted 14 years agoApparently, Samsung announced that they're making a 10.1 edition of the Galaxy Note.
That's a tablet device with a built-in 256-pressure-level tablet stylus. :D
http://www.intomobile.com/2012/02/2.....101-gets-real/
I WANT ONE!
I have yet to get a tablet device, and I always figured I was gonna get an android one. But this clinches it. I was hoping someone would come out with a way I could draw on my tablet!
I wonder if you can install CUPS on it and hook it up to a USB or network printer. :o That'd be neat :D

Hey all you opensource programmers and developers out there-
General | Posted 14 years agoSee this?: http://www.bettermeans.org/
This is an awesome thing, but it needs a lot of work. Y'all should go fix it! Their code hasn't been touched in a year, despite them opensourcing it under GPLv2 (it doesn't say it on too many of the files yet, but it's a fork of Redmine that's being distributed, and Redmine is GPLv2)
Its code repository is at https://github.com/Bettermeans/bettermeans
Two fixes that I can already point out that need done:
/app/models/user.rb lines 751 & 758: that should be activity_streams not Activity_Streams (it's case sensitive)
/app/models/setting.rb lines 271-272: the lines should be in the opposite order but the assignment operators in the same order, like this:
setting = find_by_name(name)
setting ||= new(:name => name, :value => @@available_settings[name]['default']) if @@available_settings.has_key? name
(the ||= operator is the one that applies a default value if a value hasn't been set)
I've stopped by their freenode IRC channel, but no-one seems to be responding.
And the software and the ideas behind it definitely represent something REALLY cool-
Occupy.net already uses it, at http://collaborate.occupy.net/

SOMETHING DIFFERENT TO DO ON FEB 14TH
General | Posted 14 years agoGo wish
duskcheetah a happy birthday!
duskcheetah a happy birthday!I need friends.
General | Posted 14 years agoNot online friends, I have several of those, thank you all for being around. I have enough online friends to find someone in each timezone to chat with, often enough.
What I don't have is people nearby iRL who care enough about me to want to hang out, call me and some other folks up to go see a movie, or hang out, whatever.
I AM BORED AS A.....VERY BORED PERSON. And a boring person.
I don't WANT to be Bert, I don't want to be Jon Arbuckle. But that's what things seem to be turning into.
But hell if I'm going to go through the phone book section for "bars and clubs", pick at random, go on my own, and hope I don't die.
Besides, socializing with complete strangers is....not really my thing. I want my people. I had people to hang out with in college. After college, I had a few local folks I knew well and I collected roommates so there were people to chat with occasionally.
But not now. Now, I feel like I have never been more alone in my life. I don't exactly have close friends anymore....more like acquaintances, who know my name, get along with me reasonably well, but then go away and have their own friends. Or I have friends, but they're really too busy having their own lives and families to get together and DO STUFF anymore.
Maybe I should try to put some parties together at my apartment with the people I do know, and get them to bring some friends too? I don't know, I've never been much of an extravert, but at least with my own apartment, I could somewhat control the environment I find myself in. Of course, I'd have to clean it extra good to make it suitable for entertaining.
....
Anyways, I probably shouldn't forget to take my herbal antidepressant (5-HTP) in the morning like I did today. :| It makes me feel like I ate a huge plate of cold and slightly-off scrambled eggs, but at least it keeps me happy and blissfully ignorant of my own issues. >.<
In the meantime, I'm back to working on losing weight and bootstrapping basic strength. Maybe a better body image will help my own self-image. But since I'm not in my 20s any more, what are the odds of appearing even the slightest bit physically attractive to any healthy single childless female and crazy-in-the-good-way women anyway? :P
FML.
(PS: I'll probably delete this journal tomorrow when it feels too whiny and self-pitying to leave online, so enjoy it while it lasts.)

Animation Comparison
General | Posted 14 years agohttps://youtu.be/9aHW2CKJMsY
https://youtu.be/VjWqTLWYERcSo, I have understaged and overanimated, I think. :P Also I forgot a bush partly covering Dash in the first/last shots. The closeups are closerup than they needed to be, and I didn't tie the actions in between the shots as much as I could have.
(Obviously, I *did* reference the show's animation for the character actions, backgrounds etc, as well as the character designs)
OH WELL
Still looks pretty good, especially for a first attempt at pony animation. :D
BIG CHANGES FOR ANTHROCON'S ARTIST'S ALLEY
General | Posted 14 years agohttp://www.anthrocon.org/alley
In order to get into the alley, you have to preregister for the con, and sign up for Artist's Alley online before the con.
They also have apparently changed the standby rules, and the space usage requirements for the alley (you can't stash stuff on the floor, except your stack of sketchbooks that people have commissioned you to do. Except like, one personal item, like on an airline)
I don't usually do the Alley, but I figured I should retweet/rejournal this to those of you who do. :D

Magical Pony Theater 3000
General | Posted 14 years agoIn the most recent millenium, in Equestrian time and space,
Princess Luna and her Royal Guards are caught in a nasty place,
They try to survive the whims of Tia,
Just an alicorn who rules Equestria,
From Canterlot below, she sets her sights above,
Just to torture all her captives on the satellite above!
GET! ME! DOOWWWWWN!
"I'll send her G1 ponies,
the worst I can find! (LA LALA)
she'll have to sit and watch them all,
and I'll monitor her mind.."

This video will rock your diet.
General | Posted 14 years agohttps://youtu.be/KLjgBLwH3Wc
And so you don't have to write quickly during the video, her recommended daily diet is:
* 3 cups of green leaves (kale)
* 3 cups of sulfur-rich veggies (cabbage family, onion/garlic family, mushrooms, asparagus)
* 3 cups of bright colors (3 different colors- berries, bright fruits, bright veggies)
* grass fed meat & wild fish (salmon or herring)
* organ meat (liver kidney heart sweetbread etc)
* seaweed
and pretty much no bread or carbs (and after 9 cups of veggies, you won't have room for sponge-starch anyway)
Conveniently this is very similar to the Paleo diet and the Primal Blueprint diet. Both of which bring to mind images of people pretending to be TV show cavemen, but are actually well grounded in nutritional science (which is still largely ignored by nutritional medicine). :D

A Chris Sanders Quote on Music and Drawing-
General | Posted 14 years ago"Never underestimate music in this mix. The right music will keep me at my desk for hours, and the right music can make the difference between a great drawing and a so-so drawing. I have playlists that I write to, excercise to, draw to, and ink to."
-- Chris Sanders, from http://alohalilo.deviantart.com/art.....-012-135112068
I found that quote, and was all, "YES!" I always thought that the bit in Animator's Survival Kit about unplugging from music seemed to be missing something.
Personally, it seems like my best ideas and art always are music fueled.
I guess it's more that your musical environment has an effect on how you draw- so if you're animating, particularly if you're animating inbetweens, you don't necessarily WANT your music to shift your drawing attitude one way or another per frame.
But it's great for inspiration. :D

WHAT KIND OF FERN IS THIS
General | Posted 14 years agoI went to the store today to pick up some pesticide to knock out some annoying fungus gnats in my potting soil, and wound up bringing home a $4 fern as well.
http://twitpic.com/7g0r37
It was labeled as "Fluffy Ruffles, Nephrolepis exaltata", which is a Boston Fern. But was much darker in color than the $10 larger Fluffy Ruffles on the other side of the garden center.
That and the "albino tarantula" stems that its fronds grow from, make me suspect that it's actually a Davallia Fejeensis, or "Rabbit's Foot" fern. The stems were actually hanging over the pot I bought it in, before I repotted it.
Either that or someone just squashed a white tarantula with my fern when they potted it. :|
Anyways, just curious if anyone out there in internet land knows their ferns, and can tell me if Boston Ferns also have this sort of root, or if someone at the nursery supplying Lowes garden center was just being incredibly sloppy with their tagging? :p

Looking for voice actors for a short ponymation-
General | Posted 14 years agoAnyone can make a stab at this, I'll just grab whomever sounds the most like the respective characters.
Tryin' to make an actual Flash animation based on http://www.furaffinity.net/view/6717521
You can see my current wip (in whatever state it is the last time I hit ctrl-enter) at http://snapai.weanimatethings.com/louder_anim.swf
Would loooove to do it all with fan voices, rather than having to clip stuff out of the show itself, so if any of y'all can do a great Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, or Luna, feel free to take a swing at it.
Prefer to get the audio uncompressed (ie: wav, or FLAC), I dunno how you share that online, maybe Soundcloud?
I've already asked AutumnSpice ( https://www.everfreeradio.com ) to take a crack at Rainbow Dash, but the more the mare-ier! (ahaha, horse puns. Scary but fun!)
I'd try myself, but being a guy, if I try Luna's voice it comes off closer to Steven Magnet's. =P
Script follows initially from the "Sonic Rainboom" episode ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xczDd2_X0DI#t=0m25s ), so:
Dash: Louder!
Fluttershy: yay
Dash: Louder!
Fluttershy: yay
Dash: LOUUUUUDAAAAARRR
Fluttershy: *INHAAAAAAAAAALE*
[Luna taps Fluttershy]
Fluttershy: *startled squeak* *tiny eep when she sees Luna*
Luna: *clears throat*
[then in theatrical voice which I'll postprocess for RCV]
Luna: HUZZAAAHHHHH!
Dash (stunned): ....whoa!
(that should be a short "whoa", not a "whoooaaaaaah")
Please give it a try! And post it somewhere public too, so your own subscribers can hear it, I expect if I get anyone to try at all, then I'll probably get more attempts than I need! Besides, you never know what other projects might be lookin' for voices. :D

ROWE: Results Only Work Environment

A Results-Only Work Environment is a corporate attitude, that detaches the idea that you need to be in your chair at your desk 9-5, 40 hours a week. Particularly for salaried employees, a time-only work environment makes absolutely NO sense, since you're being paid for accomplishing goals and responsibilities, not for holding down a chair.
Which means, you're expected to do roughly a week's worth of work a week, but it doesn't matter where or when you do it, so long as you meet all your responsibilities. You can show up late, or leave early, or work from home, or catch a movie in the middle of the workday. Your choice.
This is a neat idea.
Probably the only way to approach a internet-based work effort, too.
This is not to say that people in a ROWE won't be held accountable both to accomplish what they are tasked with and to stay in communication with everyone that they should be. Quite the opposite, if you are not measuring the time someone spends on their responsibilities, then the ONLY way to measure their performance is by what they accomplish, and whether they're facilitating or impeding others.
Gives me ideas for Things.....

Is there an "I Hate John K style" group I can join?
General | Posted 14 years agoBecause really. I can't STAND that grotesque style, and all its derivatives. >.<
The animation principle of appeal is to give your characters a design that encourages the audience to look at them, whether they love or hate them.
John K based styles do this based on the principle that people just can't help staring at a trainwreck.
Gosh. :|

Someone go set up a cheetah breeder
General | Posted 14 years agoA cheetah is on my list of animals I would love to have if I could afford to care for.
They've apparently been raised since ancient Egypt as tame pets and hunting mates (like any felinae, they are tamed by nurture not breeding).
Unfortunately, they're rather rare now- they're not endangered but they are vulnerable, apparently because cheetah hunting is so much more popular than cheetah-owning in some countries. :S That and they're not as genetically diverse atm as they should be.
I don't think atm I can afford the expense to get a place and set up an outdoor cheetah enclosure, let alone get a cheetah cub (if you get an adult, you are effectively raising a feral cat, with all the pissy and predatory attitude that entails), so one of you people out there should start a company that collects genetically diverse cheetahs, breeds them, and raises them for petownership. :p Kinda like SibFox does for foxes, except that cheetahs don't need to be bred for docility, just diversity. (as I said, felinae are tame if they're raised around people...your ordinary housecat would be just as wild as any other wildcat if it were raised in the wild)
A cheetah's about the size of a medium to large dog, does not have retractable claws, and has to be walked/run on a leash like a dog, rather than sitting around indoors all day like your usual lazy tabby. (do you really want a litterbox that big indoors?) Seems like a good cross to me. :D
And like I said, these were owned fairly commonly since ancient times, and have been pets throughout the ages, no reason we couldn't find a way to make them pets again. :)
