General | Posted 14 years agoWhy do shape hints ALWAYS break on Flash shape tweens?
I mean, it shouldn't be that hard. I have a blob shape. I've marked 10 points *in order* around the outside. The next shape key is another blob shape, and I've marked those same ten points there *in the same order* around the outside.
What I expect: The shape hints are moved from one point to the next, and the curves between them are interpolated.
How Flash actually reacts: AAAAAAAH WTF IS THIS SH!T THERES POINTS AND CURVES AND THINGS MOVING AAAAA I CAN'T MATH THIS *jumps out the window* - no shape tween generated.
Honestly, Adobe, why have the feature THERE if it doesn't even work? Just....give me something that works, or take it out, don't give me a tool that consistently does absolutely the wrong thing. :|

Hand Turn
General | Posted 14 years agoJust had a great idea for an animation exercise, and I think I might try it when I get home:
a HAND TURN.
You know, like, in animation school, they may have you do a turntable animation of a head, so you understand how the drawing represents a three dimensional shape and so you know how whatever character you've designed looks when turning around.
But I have always had trouble getting hands to look right....the shapes of the fingers, their placement on the palm, etc.
And I am thinking that might be a good exercise to try doing drawn animation of in general.
Draw a character's hand, and rotate it on-axis (axis through the wrist), so it goes through 360 degrees of rotation.
If ya like drawing paws, you could try that with a foot too - on the footbones' axis to get a much more solid understanding of the toe shapes, or on the ankle axis for a nice challenging bit of foreshortening. But try a hand, too.
Whatcha all think? :D

The CMC sneak into the stage where "Sapphire Shores and Zigfilly Follies" tour has set up their equipment, to try for a CUTIE MARK CRUSADERS ROCK BAND cutie mark.
Giant subwoofer, blasted off the stage.
Ring, time for school!
Cheerilee is taking them to see the old city hall clock, that was damaged by the first ever Sonic Rainboom, and everyone gets a flyer about it or takes notes or something.
Get Scootaloo on her own somehow (Apple Blossom and Sweetie Belle need to have something else they each have to do, not together)
Back in time Sequence
Probably set in Sweet Apple Acres near the clubhouse, though that makes it hard to do the twin pines / lone pine mall gag
Or maybe set in a mall where the Pie family's stone farm used to be - that would allow for the frightened family showing up in the barn!

Spike explains the amulet
- a secret project that Twilight's been working on for Celestia, involving Equestria's history
Spike: I traded my favorite muffin recipe I got from Applejack, with the diamond dogs for the gems to make the amulet!

"THOSE MUFFINS WERE TERRIBLE!"
Diamond Dogs "shoot" Spike with slingshots and rock-stale muffins

Doctor Whoof (suddenly arriving from off-right): "Wait, that's not fire *zzap* Ow, yes, not fire, that's um *puts hoof to mouth* artron energy, DEFINITELY artron energy." - "What?" - "Nothing! Nevermind, ah running!" *pzoom*
Scootaloo arrives ina much younger Sweet Apple Acres Pinkamena's stone farm
Crashes into the barn, startles family, which flees.
plot point: the photo, probably the one from the opening of the mane six- maybe Scootaloo is found and taken care of by a young Fluttershy, and so she misses the argument where Rainbow Dash defends her? It would be in character I suppose-
plot point: Someone needs to explain the timestream problems to Scootaloo, I'd prefer it to be Doctor Whoof, tho Celestia might also be a likely candidate....maybe she runs to Canterlot to ask Celestia about the amulet, can't get audience though, but the Doctor just happens to be there, and fills her in on the details?
Maybe Doctor Whoof can be wearing the analysis helmet Twilight uses on Pinkie Pie in Feeling Pinkie Keen, like Doc Brown is wearing in BTTF when Marty shows up?
plot point: like in BTTF, the amulet (flux capacitor) needs a power source only available in the present, not the past. Maybe it draws its power from the Elements of Harmony, which would still be in their thousand year sleep at this point? Think we can rely on Dash's first sonic rainboom as an alternate powersource, since ponies can control the weather and deliver lightning bolts on demand, and it's a one-off, so the timing has to be exact.
plot point: Convince Rainbow Dash to compete in the pegasus races against Biff. (Clyde? more horse related that way...do the colts in the pegasus race have names?)
At the school dance, Scootaloo performing Johnny B Goode with a filly Sapphire Shores.
And 80s Cheerilee is a student dancing there.
And maybe in the background, in the surrounding woods, Princess Celestia and Dr Whoof watching the events unfolding or something. XD
Returning to the future:
Ponyville Clocktower
Time jump powered by Dash's rainboom! THAT hits the clocktower as the power source that sends her back. (because a bolt of lightning is far too easy to get, just have a weather crew pegasus buck a stormcloud)
Back at the clocktower present
Derpy flies overhead.
fl-fl-FLASH, Scootaloo arrives back, startling Granny Smith (she has ALL the luck with Scootaloo, doesn't she?), skidding into the library, knocking the books down
Twilight: "Scootaloo? ...are you okay?" - "Yeah, sorry-" - "Wait, is that the amulet I've been working on?" - "Yes! I mean no! I mean- it was....it will be- not right now! I gotta go, I gotta see if Spike is okay! *flee*" - "But-" *Scootaloo is gone* *Twilight smiles, picks up a quill and a scroll, and starts writing*
Back at the orchard (mall? market? Whatever)
Scootaloo arrives, looks down, sees Spike go down under a hail of petrified pastry
Sees herself go "NO!" jump out, and grab the amulet
Sees herself punch through the timeline
Runs down, to talk to Spike.
Princess Celestia shows up!
Explains that what happened was why she commissioned the amulet (self-fulfilling paradox)

MY LITTLE PONY BANNER
General | Posted 14 years agoSo, I was pretty bored today, so I made chicken stock with the leftover bones from a rotisserie chicken I got for $8 from WholeFoods yesterday. :D
Then, I cleaned up my kitchen and, on a whim, decided to move the fridge from one side (where it was kinda' wedged between the utility room and the dishwasher), to the wall on the other side, and moved the table in that spot to where the fridge was.
My kitchen now feels like twice the size, because I have extra prep workspace near the counters, and I have a fridge out in the open.
Plus, it's accessible to the living room, so in the (somewhat unlikely) event that I have a bunch of guests over, drinks can be placed in the fridge and be easily accessible from the living room in seconds. :D
Then I was still bored, until I realized that the new episode of Doctor Who was up, so watched that.
Quite awesome! :D I'd make more notes here, but I imagine some folks here also are Doctor Who fans and haven't seen it, so I won't spoil anything. :p
I was surprised to find out I'm about two years older than Matt Smith, who plays the Doctor currently. He was born in 82! D:
I'm still annoyed that people aren't making more collaborative arts, tho'. I would love to animate a short with folks or something, if you can come up with something I'm interested in. :o I can do stuff in Flash, Blender, Toonboom, whatever. :D
(Well, honestly, I haven't ever animated a character in Blender, but I'm familiar with what's involved in setting up a CG character for animation in general, as well as animating it, so I figure with a few tutorials I could replicate that in Blender.)
So yeah. That's all.

And then I wanna know why no-one in this fandom seems to be doing stuff like this. Get together, get character designers and animators and background painters and storyboard artists and writers and voice actors and musicians etc together, and make cartoons.

Seriously, why don't we have more collaborative stuff around here? >.> Am I just missing it?

I'm gonna get an elephant ear plant!
General | Posted 14 years agoI saw a picture on twitter of a game studio in California where the desks are shaded with giant polyester leaves from IKEA.
Of course, I immediately wanted one. But what I didn't immediately want is to drive 5 hours round trip to the nearest IKEA, spending $60 extra in gas just to get a $15 leaf and some swedish meatballs.
Then it occurred to me to search and see if there was possibly a plant that can be grown in a pot, and has leaves that big.
YEP.
It's called the elephant ear plant, its bulb is more commonly known as the taro root (which you can sometimes find chips made from at the grocery store). There are quite a lot of different varieties of it, but many of them grow 6 feet tall - there's even one that will easily reach 9 feet. And better still, the plant can be grown in a pot, not just outdoors.
And if that wasn't cool enough, I looked at the page I was browsing the varieties on, and it turns out it's the nursery of the Juniper Level Botannical Gardens in Raleigh, not too far of a drive away! Unfortunately, they're normally mail-order only. Except....they have their seasonal open house THIS WEEKEND!
So yeah, I'm gonna head down there sometime this weekend, and pick me up one of these tubers, and I'm going to have NATURAL giant leaves overhanging my monitor. Muahaha! I already got me a big planter pot and soil for it, so I'm all set to get this thing. :D

Went through and played the tutorials for a bunch of different games. Many of them come from facebook, there's a few new (to me) faces too.

If you're familiar with Facebook games that spam your news stream....G+ games don't do that. They have their own stream (on the games tab), and are only allowed to post there. You see game posts when you want to, and you don't when you don't! :D

PROGRESS - weight loss
General | Posted 14 years agoSo, in about two months since I started doing intermittent fasting and ashtanga yoga, I've lost over ten pounds at this point!
Sure, it's not fast (well it IS fasting, but...yeah ;) but slow weight loss is better for being able to maintain it when you hit your goal weight - you've changed your habits to something that works at the lower weight, and you're not likely to rebound.
So yeah. I am down to (the high end of) 229 pounds at this point!
TEN DOWN, SEVENTY MORE TO GO! \:D/

While a lot of people might have taken issue to "Copying is not Theft" (despite the fact that copying is breaking copyright, breaking business models, but is certainly not theft of personal property), I don't think anyone should have a problem with pointing out how important proper crediting is (note that crediting vs authorship fraud is shown on a work well out of copyright, to point out that fraud and copyright are actually unrelated)

(disclaimer: I still have all weekend to work on him, with nothing else to do, but I don't want to promise ANYTHING, because I've taken a rushed suit to AC before, and it WASN'T pretty. Considering I still have all the foaming and skinning for the head to do, I've actually lost one of the eyes SOMEHOW, and I haven't even started on hands, feet, tail, or bodysuit other than the completed muslin mockup....yeah. NOT LIKELY.)

General | Posted 14 years agoSo I've decided to try to lose weight more concertedly again.
Which of course, requires eating less and exercising, but I have a plan!
I'm gonna do Intermittent Fasting. This basically involves skipping two meals in a row, every OTHER day.
So, normally, I eat breakfast lunch and dinner every day like this:
BLDBLDBLDBLDBLDBLDBLD
but when I'm doing this, I'll be eating:
─LDBLDBL──LDBL──LDBL─
This is basically the Eat STOP Eat program, but without buying the book :p
I've done it a few trial times before, and it works beautifully - and cutting out 6 out of every 21 meals will drop a bunch of calories out of my diet. I'm still getting lunch every single day, because work pays for my lunch - that's the most convenient meal to keep. If they didn't, and I say, had a family, I might keep dinner instead. Also, when I do eat, I eat normal full meals. Much easier than eating tasteless stuff or single-bite-meals for months on end! And interestingly, once the digestive system finishes processing its last meal, with no new input, it turns off, and all that energy and bloodflow starts going to your brain and muscles instead. It's better than the strongest cup of coffee for being awake in the morning!
As for exercise, since I feel like I need to build some strength and some calories, and want to look better, I'm gonna start off with 20 minute Power Yoga sessions every couple days. Might not be the 90 minutes at the gym lots of people do, but it's enough to wear me out, and that's enough for me for now. Power Yoga uses yoga poses and sequences as body-weight exercises, it's designed to keep a continuous energy burn to keep you sweating the whole time (keeping the muscles warmed up so they're *capable* of stretching!) The basic warmup is a cross between a burpee, and "slow practice" - if you've ever done slow practice with weight resistance, you know how grueling that can be, now combine that with a burpee! And me not fit enough to even do a pushup without my knees winding up on the floor :x
So yay. Doin' stuff! I wanna lose weight and feel great and look good for the ladies. You can't flex flab. And I wanna be able to fling myself around like I was 12 again. :v

General | Posted 14 years agoI am going to ANTHROCON! I have a room, and approved time off, and enough savings to afford it. So yay!
I will be staying at the Omni, which means I will probably not be out much past midnight. (come to think of it, that'd probably be true even at the Westin. Being around lots of people tires me out FAST.)
Gonna be staying with
rianith and whatever else decent peoples she managed to arrange to crash with. Will not be a party room. If you want me at a party, you best find me and invite me. At the sort of party I'd like to attend. :P
You will NOT find me at a table in the dealer's den or artist's alley. I go to the con to hang out with people, not to sell my wares! I can do that on the internet. =P So memorize my profile picture but imagine me dressed NOT ridiculously geeky.
I do not know if I'll wear my dragon tail to the con. I'll probably bring it. I may have a completed suit of JuicyFruit by then, so if you see this guy wandering about the con, then you may stalk him back to the headless lounge and talk to me out of suit. :p
I probably won't bring my laptop with me, coz it doesn't really work well for the animation I'm doing anymore. I swear laptops seem to slow down and get crappier as they get older, rather than simply staying the same. :| Probably will just bring a sketchpad with me, and doodle people's characters. I like doodling people and characters! The fastest way to get free art from me is to be awesome. The fastest way to NOT get free art from me is to ask for free art. :P
I want to at least go to Jim Martin's puppetry workshop this year. Notsure what else. If I get the JuicyFruit suit done, maybe some suiting panels and activities. I usually attend the masquerade, and closing ceremonies, opening ceremonies if I can get there in time, etc. I'll go to the Funday Pawpet Show, attend
jr5150's standup if he's doing it again this year. Will find a place relatively close to the beginning to watch the fursuit parade (if I'm not IN it) Might go to 
chillymouse's life drawing workshop. Not the nude one because it sounds like it's threatening to turn into a NUDIST one. :| I don't need to see the general con attendance nude. x_x *eyebleach*
I know I have 1735 watchers on here, but I am still not super popular. If you find me sitting alone, I am not being aloof, I am being shy. (~yaay~) DRAG ME AROUND WITH YOUR CROWD if you want to hang out, because I worry about overstaying my welcome otherwise. :P Last year I spent at least a day hanging out with a crowd of people who weren't anyone, and didn't think I was anyone either, because we were all having fun.

THEN TELL ME MOAR. >.> Otherwise, while I don't freak out about people telling me about their vices (I have been in this fandom since '97), I really REALLY don't care to to hear about it, and as an artist/visual thinker, don't need to visualize it either. x.x You are PROBABLY ruining my appetite for lunch. Idea for an episode of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic

[patched together from a few IRC logs describing my idea]
Anyways, I had the BEST idea for the general plotline of a show for the Cutie Mark Crusaders actually getting their cutie marks. :D
Basic idea is: at the beginning of the show, somehow the CMC decide to, or get the suggestion to, make TEMPORARY cutie marks until they get their real ones. Like, the other two tell each of them what their CURRENT talent is, and then Apple Bloom designs and sews together pony sarongs with their temporary marks embroidered onto em.
And so, after they do that, they go around town, enjoying just being friends, instead of having to deal with their quest. Maybe they go to school. They probably visit each of the main characters, and get the reaction to thinking they're on another cutie mark crusade, and the relief reaction to finding out that they're not doing that today.
As they go along, they have fun, they realise that the real reason they hang out together is because they're friends, and by the end of the episode, they ultimately agree that they don't care if they're blank forever, because they have friends like each other.
And with that, one or all of them takes off their own pony sarong, and the grand reveal- that sometime unbeknownst to any of them, they all HAVE their cutie marks. Even better, they're "polished" versions of the stitched cutie marks from the outfits. :D
Possible morals/letters to Princess Celestia:
* Some things in life only happen when you stop worrying about them. (This has been stated generally, but never associated with a pony that was really set on getting theirs giving up and just deciding to have fun)
* As stated before, "It doesn't matter when they get their cutie marks, or if they're blank their entire lives, because they have each other as friends"
* You're your most unique and original talent when you're simply doing what seems obvious or ordinary to you rather than TRYING to be original or unique (this is really the message of the CMC episodes in general anyway.)
I think that would make an AWESOME episode. It would finalize the CMC story which really doesn't have anything else to say I think. And it has a friendship lesson that is as important or more important than the overarching plot. And it's the sort of feel good ending that would make the audience jump up and cheer and dance and squee. XD
Damn, now I want to storyboard it, and I already have WAY too many projects on my plate. Wah! ;A;

Just do a google search for "sinus migraine" because I did this morning because I had a "sinus headache" that was making it difficult for me to function.
GUESS WHAT.
Unless you have an active sinus infection, you don't have a sinus headache, and apparently 9 out of 10 "sinus headache" sufferers actually have migraines.
I'd describe the almost-weekly headaches I get as weather-induced hangovers. I wake up reeling, feeling like someone sucked all the water out of my skull. I actually HAVE a bunch of this list of migraine symptoms:
* Nausea
* Sensitivity to light and/or noise
* Moderate to severe headache
* Pulsing/throbbing pain
* Headache worsened by activity

Anyways, I found this helpful to know, so I can at least feel justified in complaining about the pain when I have a headache! And thought I'd share, since a lot of y'all probably have what you thought were sinus headaches too. :)
Just do a google search for "sinus migraine" because I did this morning because I had a "sinus headache" that was making it difficult for me to function.
GUESS WHAT.
Unless you have an active sinus infection, you don't have a sinus headache, and apparently 9 out of 10 "sinus headache" sufferers actually have migraines.
I'd describe the almost-weekly headaches I get as weather-induced hangovers. I wake up reeling, feeling like someone sucked all the water out of my skull. I actually HAVE a bunch of this list of migraine symptoms:
* Nausea
* Sensitivity to light and/or noise
* Moderate to severe headache
* Pulsing/throbbing pain
* Headache worsened by activity

This was claimed in 2007 to effectively treat certain types of cancer. (It should be noted that in excessive doses it can CAUSE liver cancer)
There was a study that wound up being too small to show any results- a study treating 5 cancer patients with the drug.
Yes, pharmaceutical companies aren't interested in billing a generic as their new wonder drug, and that's terrible. However government grants and charity grants for this sort of research are available if anyone wants to have it studied. The research will still happen eventually.
Also, FFS, MITOCHONDRIA ARE NOT HUMAN CELLS. They're organelles inside human cells. And they're primarily responsible for energy production - not some magic "anti-cancer cell"
Please take with a lick of salt any article that claims that someone "cured cancer" - cancer is a class of runaway symptoms in reaction to a great number of causes. Scientists are not going to magically cure all cancer with a single pill anymore than they are going to cure COUGHING rather than an individual disease. When cancer is generally 'cured', we're going to have a large number of effective treatments for many different types of cancer- people will still get cancer, but it'll be a rather unimportant symptom that's taken care of fairly readily barring unusual cases or conditions.
