Happy Fun Times!
Posted 10 years agoYesterday, Monday the 26th I woke at about 1 PM with a sensation like severe gas. I went to the bathroom for the probable solution, but afterwards the pain, which started at the center of my abdomen, moved down and right. It also moved WAY up in intensity. After some web-searches and dithering, I decided that it was real likely I had appendicitis.
I called my friend Dave, whom I knew was working from home for a lift to the ER at Hennepin County Medical Center, and got in relatively quickly- crying and hyperventilating from pain and fear will do that. It didn't take long for them to decide that, yep, it was appendicitis, and the little bugger had to come out.
I went to surgery around 10 PM, and was out about two hours later. I woke confused and pissed off (my usual reaction to anesthetics), but settled down soon enough.
It went well, and I am now sans-appendix. The procedure was laparoscopic, with three teeny incisions on the left side of my abdomen for the camera and instruments. My pain is gone... Well, kinda. I now have a gut that is badly bruised and tender, and DAMN it hurts when I cough. But, this is WAY better than the ranked 8 and going to 9 pain that I had when I got here!
As I type this I'm technically 'under observation', which basically means I'm sitting on my ass waiting for them to decide to issue my release papers. My folks will get me home, and thereafter I will be likely to go to bed and sleep it off as much as possible.
So that's been my two days. How about yours?

Posted 10 years agoI have a friend who is wanting to both improve her artistic skills and learn to do art on the computer. She needs to know what people recommend for an art tablet in the $70 to $100 range, preferably in the vicinity of 8 1/2 x 11 page size. Please reply with your suggestions. Thanks!

Posted 10 years agoWith the almost instant sell-out of Hyatt rooms for the convention and several other things that bother me about this coming convention (what, the overflow hotels haven't been arranged yet??), I've come to the conclusion that I really don't have a reason to attend other than nostalgia.
For the most part, I can now get art almost on-demand on the 'net from any artist that cares to take my money. On top of that, almost all of the people I used to go to see no longer attend. Combine that with the sheer size that MFF has attained and the costs involved...
I don't think I'll be attending this year or in the future.
I don't really like this decision. MFF has been my 'home' convention since its first year in 2000. I loved the con, and I loved the people who ran it. But without many people outside my Local Group that I actually interact with (
Sparhawk is really the only person I see there now ), I can't justify it.
So, I think this year I'll be attending the local convention, Furry Migration, and maybe try to attend Convergence; I can commute to both, which eliminates most of the transit costs and all of the hotel, and it means I don't stress the cats out by vanishing for a full week.
This is not final; I'm still waffling, but I think I'd be better off financially and rationally by not attending this year.

Posted 10 years agoI've been seeing a good number of supportive pieces here on FA and elsewhere, but I've seen a few... That kinda miss the point. To be a cartoonist and make a statement is one thing, but to do exactly what the terrorists imagine that all cartoonists are doing, i.e. actually denigrating the /religion/ and not the terrorist acts, is kind of playing into their hands.
We must, as writers, artists and creators of all kinds, be respectful of religion- the criminal monsters who do these depraved acts have NOTHING to do with any religion, other than the worship of hate. Hate really is it's own belief system, and far too many follow it now.
If you want to make a supportive statement, do not slander the Islamic faiths. Don't mock the Prophet. Instead, go after the real criminals- the terrorists who bastardize and distort their supposed faith to perform acts of evil that would have Muhammad weeping.
We need to make the world a better place, not give these subhuman scum more falsity to drive their hate with. They are one and all cowards- those with true faith would have no fear of either words or imagery.

Posted 11 years agoThe recent Drama™ convinced me that I needed to make sure that my art and photos would be safe. With that in mind I've now cross-posted the vast majority of my images and photos onto Weasyl. It 'only' took about eight solid hours, even WITH the transfer-tool I used. And I still have work to do with links and such,
I AM NOT LEAVING FA. This is just a safety net maneuver. So that's the news. Carry on!

MFF again!
Posted 11 years agoOkay, looks like I have someone for the other bed. Woot! So I don't have to worry now. I'll post another journal if something changes.
MFF!
Posted 11 years agoI'm once again going to Midwest Furfest! However, to accomplish this I need to get someone into the second bed of my room to cover expenses! I arrive on December 3rd late in the afternoon, and I leave on the 8th. I'd prefer someone I know, but I'm not too worried.
There are a few rules though.
1. You must be clean. If you don't bathe at a con, I don't want the funk in my room!
2. The room is not a brothel- have sex elsewhere!
3. Be considerate of the others in the room. I have myself in the room of course, and two friends on the floor for varying stays.
Contact me in a comment here or a note, and we'll work things out. I'll choose a friend or acquaintance over a stranger, and someone who will be there the entire stay over other options.
The costs are: $142.38 per night. Your share will be half that, minus a little for the folks on the floor. :)
(Full stay would be $355.95 for Wed-Mon morning)

As to Robin Williams...
Posted 11 years agoRemember this. For all the pain we feel at his loss, remember that he gave us something precious that we will have forever- laughter. For all he hurt, he spent his life bringing joy ot his audiences- that is something that will never go away, and which can be revisited in his albums, films and videos.
Remember, and he is immortal.

Uploads...
Posted 11 years agoLately I've come to the realization that over the years I've amassed a HUGE amount of art, most of which is black and white and created by the talented Louis Frank
wom-bat - So much in fact that the bulk of it will never be uploaded. However, I've decided to put some of my favorites up for people to see. As I am a TOTAL art-whore, I'd be overjoyed of someone wanted to either color them or do their own versions- note that I'm NOT abandoning copyright to these characters! Anyway, they'll go up tonight. Enjoy!

As to the spam today...
Posted 11 years agoI just wonder if the flucknuts doing this are aware that A) this is a felony, and B) a FEDERAL crime that counts as crossing state borders? They could be facing actual hard time in some 'fun' vacation spot with cement walls, concertina wire-topped walls and fellas named Bubba who REALLY wanna be your friend...
