SPARTA IS BACK
Posted 7 years agoWOOH! We're moved and settling into our new house - including my new functional studio. Now that it's usable, that means I can get back to hammering away at commissions and responding to emails in a more timely fashion.
I also have good internet again, which means some good changes may be on the horizon >w>
Pictures are on my Twitter and Facebook. For more details about the move, the house, and future plans, check out my recent post on Patreon!

Convention Report: Anthrocon 2018
Posted 7 years agoWell, it's finally done. Anthrocon is over, and wow, what a convention. This year was hands-down my best, both in terms of sales and enjoyment. It blew previous years out of the water, and considering AC has always been my best con of the year, that's really saying something. I came out of it with fond memories, lots of laughs, a new appreciation for 96 degree weather, and a little extra metal in my face. All in all a great weekend.
As for the coming weeks:
- Things will likely take a little longer than they usually do. I have a lot of take-homes to do, plus what was on my queue before the con, plus my day job, plus now we're apparently moving soon. I don't have an exact deadline to give, but it won't be my usual 1-2 week turnaround.
- 27 out of the 45 pieces I put in the art show sold! The remaining 18 are currently available on twitter. I will likely delete those tweets within a few days and post them to my store soon after, of course giving Patreon first pick.
- I also ran out of business cards, which means I need to order more for FAU in August, or just have people take pictures of my social media sign. If I order more, I'm not sure I want to spend the time and money to design/print some with SpartaDog if I'm not going to be keeping that name for much longer. Will see how that goes.
For a more in-depth discussion of my Anthrocon, pledge at the $3 tier or higher on Patreon!

UPDATE: Sparta Enters the Workforce
Posted 7 years agoYup. Sparta took up a muggle job.
The short version is my mom and I are moving again, sometime before September. Since moving last summer, my art has been more or less constantly in flux and my income from it is reflecting that. So it's time to take something more stable.
Fortunately, I make enough from art that I can afford to only take a part time muggle job. Also fortunately, one of my favorite art supply stores is 10 min away and was hiring. They're paying well, willing to let me keep my neon hair and crazy piercings, and I'll get a nice employee discount.
So what does this mean for art? Hopefully, not much. I'm expecting this new job to take 2-3 days a week, which leaves plenty of time for me to paint and draw on the other days or even before/after my shifts. It may be slightly slower, but I don't foresee it having a huge impact. But, obviously, I won't know for sure until it happens, so I figured it would be good to let you guys know.
Cross your fingers and wish me luck!

ANTHROCON MEME!!!
Posted 7 years agoIt's the mooooost wonderful tiiiiiiiime of the yeeeeeaaaarrrr~
Where are you staying?
Courtyard Marriott
What day are you getting there?
Tuesday afternoon. Don't want to be driving in the city on the 4th.
Who will you be rooming with?

Who will you hang out with during the convention?
My roommates of course,
skulldog,
ishaway,
crazdude,
poprockgrey, and all my other usual con posse
What is the best way to find you?
Table M17-M18 in the dealer room during dealer hours, running around all willy nilly otherwise. You can try to grab me on Telegram if you have it or Twitter, but it's hard to keep up with phone stuff with so much going on.
Are there any panels you will be attending?
Not likely. Too much work to do!
Are you hosting any panels?
Nope
What do you look like?
Short, pudgy, neon green hair, probably covered in punk shit and crazy makeup
Will you be suiting?
Not this year
What is your gender?
Genderfluid; any pronouns are fine as long as you're respectful
How tall are you?
4'11"
Are you mated/in a relationship?
Yup, no flirts pls
Can I talk to you?
Of course! That's the reason I'm there haha
Can I touch you?
Socially acceptable public touches only please
Can I buy you drinks?
As long as it's closed container or goes directly from bartender to me. Probably won't have much time for it anyway though, tbh
Can I hug or snuggle with you?
Hugs are fine if I know they're coming. Snugs are reserved for boyfriend and close friends only
Are you nice?
I like to think so, but I have been told I'm very "blunt" compared to what people are used to lol
How long are you going?
Tuesday - Monday
Will you be going to parties?
Maybe if there's an art party. Otherwise no.
Will you be performing?
In a way, but not the way I'm sure this question intended.
If I see you, how should I get your attention?
Call my name (Sparta, Alex, or AJ), tap my arm/shoulder, or just say "excuse me"
Can I take your picture?
Yep! Just let me know it's coming first haha
What's your goal(s) for the con this year?
My last con was a financial bust so I need to recover from that. Need to make some progress on the down payment for a house. Otherwise meet some new people and spend time with the not-so-new <3
Anything to add?
- Don't forget the 6-2-1 rule! Minimum 6 hours sleep, minimum 2 meals, and minimum 1 shower per day. It's for your sake and everyone else's!
- I'll be getting a nose piercing right before the con so please be careful of my face? XD
- I DO NOT DO FREE ART and I only do trades with very close friends I know well. Please don't ask.
- It's never been an issue before but please don't invite yourself to dinner/hangouts. We'll invite you if we can.
I think that's everything! If I left anything else out just ask me!

Retiring "SpartaDog"!?
Posted 7 years agoSorry for the clickbait-y title, but before anyone freaks out: I am talking about the name, not the business/art in general.
Last year I started thinking about rebranding my business altogether. I thought about just using my legal name, but considering I don't know what my legal name will actually be yet, I thought that might not be a great idea. It also doesn't help that the initials and last name I would like, and every combination of them, is already taken on at least one social media; I can't even get an email address with it. So, a username/studio name it is.
I've been on the fence about it because, well, frankly, it's scary. I've built up a following of literally thousands of people over almost a decade under the name SpartaDog. To suddenly change it is terrifying, especially since my livelihood depends on business and brand recognition.
But at the same time, it feels...important, on a personal level. I feel like I've outgrown the SpartaDog name. It's so intrinsically linked to the furry fandom, and while I still have no intention of leaving the fandom, I want something that feels a little less indisputably furry.
I still don't really know exactly how I want to implement the change. For Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, and Instagram, it's a pretty simple name change. Deviantart I can just pay for one month of Core to change my name, or make a new account (I have very few followers there to begin with). My website I'm not really sure about - I have to look at the technicalities of changing my domain name. The one I'm really unsure about is Furaffinity. It's my biggest chunk of followers on the internet (though Tumblr is a very close second). It's also, obviously, pretty undeniably furry, and doesn't have the option to change usernames. So I have an option there. I can either stick with my current SpartaDog account and keep the entirety of my current followerbase, or make a new account and just take the hit to the follower count. It could be argued that the number of active followers won't really change, assuming they all follow me over, but it's still pretty daunting.
That said, now for the fun part: what to change my name to. I haven't really come up with a name yet, but I have some ideas for inspiration and "feel" at least:
- Cerynitis, Dain/Dainn, mythological deer
- Gold, black, white
- Shattered, fractured, broken, cracked
- Deer, stag, hart, buck
- Flowers, especially roses, lilies, and magnolias
- Space, galaxy, celestial, constellations, zodiac
- Shadows, mist, fog, mystery
- Snakes, serpents
- Ethereal, ghostly, reverent, symbolic, feminine but not expressly female
This is mostly intended as an update/heads up/thought dump, but if anyone has any thoughts or ideas they'd like to share, I'm all ears!

2018 Updates: Rebranding, Patreon, Commission Options, etc
Posted 8 years agoWith the new year rolling in, I think it's time for a fresh start.
First of all, thank you so much for your support this year! Launching my Patreon campaign was a huge step for me both financially and emotionally. It's been a huge boon to my creativity and mental stability now that I have a little more financial wiggle room, and I couldn't be more grateful to each and every one of you.
Now that the first few months have passed and I've gotten a decent handle on how to use the platform, I've learned a lot and I think some changes are in order.
- The only thing I'm 100% sure of is that I will be removing WIPs as an exclusive Patreon reward. It's a simple thing for me to do, and I think you guys enjoy it - but, if all my WIPs are exclusive and it takes me a month to finish a piece...I might not have anything to post elsewhere for the entire month. Since the internet is so dependent on frequent and consistent activity, I think my success as an independent illustrator hinges on my ability to share WIPs on social media.
- I'm not sure what to replace it with just yet; my first thought is PSD files of digital pieces, probably at viewing resolution. That would also involve restructuring the campaign goals, seeing as that's the first goal. Also I would have to figure out how to handle months where I do mostly traditional work, once I'm in a place where I can. If you have any other ideas for rewards to replace WIPs, please comment and let me know! Maybe I'll put a Patreon poll together to pick the winner!
- I want to be more interactive on Patreon. Despite the success we've had, there has been surprisingly little engagement. I haven't gotten to talk to any of my patrons, and I would like to do that more. They are going out of their way to support me, so I should go out of my way to get to know them. I haven't decided how yet; we don't have enough people to start a Discord server yet, but polls, Q&A, etc are certainly doable! Let me know what you think in this regard too!
- I've been considering a serious rebranding overhaul outside of Patreon as well. I've found a name I like a lot (it was up in the air, being trans and having family troubles this year), so my signature will likely change. The bigger change would be the business name.
SpartaDog has been the name I've operated under for about 6 and a half years now. It was and has been a great fit for that time. I was doing primarily furry art, my fursona and mascot was a dog named Sparta, and when I made him, I was really into a badass "fuck the world I do what I want" persona, so Sparta was a fitting name.
Now things have changed. My focus is monsters and robots and aliens, so going under a dog-related name feels strangely dissonant. "Sparta" now gives me a feeling of brute strength and aggression when I generally prefer more elegance and beauty, even when dangerous. But on the other hand I'm reluctant; it's difficult to change what's been an incredibly large part of my life for so long. I worry about losing people (or losing track of people) by changing my name. I'm not sure what to do with my Furaffinity account, since that's the only one that won't allow me to change my name, but it's furry-themed anyway so I would theoretically be fine keeping it as-is. The thought of starting over from scratch just when I'm starting to gain real headway is terrifying, but I keep reminding myself that since I can just change my name and keep my following on (most of) my accounts, it's not really starting over.
Which brings me to the real hard part: picking a new name lol. I could of course go with my actual name, which is the simplest choice. But there's something fun about having an online moniker that's representative of who you are and what you do. businesswolf suggested "Bot of Gold" or some derivative thereof. I like it, but I'm not committed to that either. I suppose I'll keep you all updated on that as it happens, but it will likely be a more long-term change than the Patreon restructure. Or maybe it won't, who knows!
- Also outside of Patreon: I'm eliminating the "cel-shading" commission option for now. I haven't enjoyed doing them in a while, so I'm replacing them with an option somewhere between a colored sketch and a full painting, appropriately named "painted sketches". I'll have some examples for you guys soon.
I think that's all the important stuff for now. There are a few other minor tweaks I want to make, but they're mostly aesthetic.
Thank you all again for the support thus far, and for your continued support in the future. I really can't express how much it means to me.
Happy holidays, and here's to 2018!

Illuxcon Report: Why I Don't Hate Art Anymore
Posted 8 years agoFirst off, for those who don't know, Illuxcon is a "convention" that's by fantasy artists for fantasy artists. It's a collection of well-known illustrators, fine artists, sculptors, art directors, and collectors coming together to celebrate art and what it means to be an artist. I say "convention" because it's really more of a workshop, or as I like to call it, week-long art camp. There's galleries, talks, lectures, and demos going on for four and a half days straight. If any of you are serious about becoming a professional artist, even if you don't consider your work to be in the fantasy genre, I can't recommend this event enough.
Now that that's out of the way...
This year has been a hell of a year. My relationship with art, especially my art, has been tumultuous since January. Partially because of some major life events and partially because at some point I looked through my gallery and realized that all - and I mean ALL - of my work was either commissions I had no emotional attachment or investment to, or fanart. My entire body of work either didn't mean anything to me, or belonged to someone else. It felt like people were drawn to me because they were fans of the subjects and characters I drew, not because they were fans of me. I found myself falling into the same holes because that was what was expected of me. I was afraid of losing the interest of the fans I'd accrued, so I kept giving them what I thought they wanted while disregarding what I wanted. I both underestimated and discredited my fans, and put statistics and money over my own wellbeing and honesty. And that was extremely distressing.
It led to some serious reevaluation, introspection, and an awful lot of depression and anxiety attacks. If my work felt empty to me, its creator, what did that make me as an artist? If I didn't want to do what I was doing now, what DID I want to do? What was the purpose of any of it?
I started to lean away from furry and fanart. Which was terrifying, because that has been the entirety of my fanbase so far, built up over about five years. But it isn't me anymore. Of course, that isn't to say I'll never do either again; I genuinely enjoy drawing fanart, and I've met too many wonderful people in the furry community to ever truly leave it. And I still enjoy drawing that too. It's just not my true passion, and it's not what I want the focus of my work to be.
I love monsters. I love aliens. I love robots. I love the idea of relationships with all of them, between each other or with humans. I love the idea of forbidden love, of appreciating and celebrating the exotic and the unusual. I love the hidden metaphors for oppression, for overcoming societal boundaries, for autonomy and personhood. I love the message of living your entire life misunderstood only to find the one person who truly understands. And I haven't been able to express any of that with the work I've been doing.
Other artists and publications have stressed the importance of honesty in your work. If you don't have a genuine connection to the work you put out, it will show. I've heard this for years, and agreed with it always, but I guess I never really understood what that really meant. I never understood what it meant to have a "voice" or a "story". It always felt like a wishy-washy, vague, abstract thing that wasn't real. And I guess, in a way, it is sort of vague and abstract. But it's very real; sometimes it just takes its sweet time in revealing itself.
I think Illuxcon really pulled that curtain back enough for me to see it. I don't know if it was a single event, a combination of events, or just the abundance of creative energy in such a confined space that did the trick, but something happened. I have a list on my phone's note app of ideas that come to me when I'm away from a sketchbook. Before this convention, I had ten things on the list, only one or two of which had seen any sort of realization, built up over the course of several months, if not over a year. Now afterward, the list is at 22. Several of those ideas are for diptychs, triptychs, or series. That's twelve ideas for approximately forty pieces grown over the course of four days. I don't know what to do with all this inspiration, and that's a wonderful problem to have.
I couldn't be more grateful to all the wonderful people I met who made this revelation possible. I wish I could do shoutouts for everyone but the post would be a mile longer than it already is, so I'll cut it down to the ones who helped most directly, whether they realized it or not (check them out, they're all incredible artists and wonderful people):
- stigmata
- caelansky
- Samuel Flegal
- Peter Mohrbacher
- Rebecca D. George
- Colin and Kristine Poole
- Nate Hillyer
- Aedan Roberts
A few interesting stories from the weekend:
The way IX is set up, the main show is about a 15 min walk from the hotel where the rest of the convention is at a gallery called Goggleworks. I was trying to get there via hotel shuttle Wednesday night, not particularly wanting to walk it again alone at night. The shuttle arrived, picked up one person, and then left. Just as I was getting annoyed, this older guy with long hair walks out of the hotel. He stops and looks at me for a sec, then asks, "Are you going to Goggleworks?" and I say, "I'm trying to." Then he asked if I wanted a ride. Now, if it were any other convention I would've said FUCK no. But I have a lot more trust for people in this community than others, so I said sure. He introduced himself as John, I introduced myself. We started talking about my art, and how he's glad he decided to get a rental car after all. We got to Goggleworks, I thanked him profusely, and we went our separate ways.
The next day I found out that was fucking John Schindehette, former art director for Wizards of the Coast (Magic the Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons) for sixteen years and current senior art director for ThinkGeek, who works with Bioware, Blizzard, Sony, Disney, and a bunch of other huge companies. What are the odds?
Also, I finally got to deliver the original of my entry to Pete Mohrbacher's Angelarium fanart contest. Back when I finished it, he told me to sell it rather than give it to him. I made a deal with him that if it didn't sell by Illuxcon, I would hand it to him in person, and he agreed. And honestly, as nice as the money would have been, I'm much happier with this outcome. It was a convenient ice breaker and an honor to pass it on to one of my biggest role models.
All in all, it was an incredible, reaffirming, life-changing weekend (I'm not ashamed to admit I cried on the drive home), and I'm already looking forward not only to next year's IX, but to how much I can accomplish before then.
UPDATE: Fall/Winter 2017
Posted 8 years agoWHEW after two back-to-back weekends, my 2017 convention season is finally over, at least in terms of selling. Good time for a quick update.
Things to expect next year/the end of this year:
- Rethinking convention prices
- Rebranding and rebuilding my convention setup
- Expanding to non-furry conventions
- More focus on original work (as opposed to fanart/commissions)
- A published project I can’t discuss until it’s complete
- Merchandise, including t-shirts and enamel pins
- Launching an ArtStation gallery
- Launching a personal website; may nix Storenvy depending on the host’s backend
- Launching Patreon
To clarify, I will still be taking commissions as well, and still doing fanart, and people who don’t subscribe to the patreon won’t lose anything, patrons will just get some extra.
There might be a few other things I’m forgetting but those are the major things. I’m at a turning point with my art, I can tell, and I want to help usher that change along.
Current commissions are moving along nicely, but I may take a few days off here and there over the next couple of weeks to recover from the double feature haha.
Thanks to everyone who’s stuck with me thus far, your support is appreciated <3

As a dealer I am not likely to turn down free food, especially breakfast or lunch, AS LONG as it's either in a sealed container or goes directly from server to me. Just please don't try to use food as payment for anything at my table or to get favors out of me!
Can I ask ya to dance with me during the dances?
I probably won't be going, sorry!
Can I buy you drinks?
Same rule as food! Sealed container, or from the server to me! And please don't take it as an invitation to hit on me, I'm flattered but happily taken!

Make lots of money so my mom and I can buy a house! And enjoy my last dealing con of the year, and then enjoy not worrying about it til next year haha

PATREON REWARDS! - What do you prefer?
Posted 8 years agoSo I'm finally getting around to working on my Patreon again. After some conversations with friends who are far more experienced with Patreon than I am, it became apparent that the kinds of rewards I was most interested in were not necessarily the most popular, and vice versa. This was especially true of the lower tiers.
Before anyone asks, I will not be putting anything I normally make public behind a paywall. You won't lose anything, patrons just get a little extra.
Some ideas I have so far:
- Access to WIPs and scrapped sketches
- Early access to finished pieces (I post them to Patreon a few days before anywhere else)
- First dibs on adoptables, commission slots, preorders, etc
- Process/time lapse videos
- Patreon-exclusive discord channel (I don't give mine out to people I don't know, so this would be the only way to reach me that way)
- Commission discounts
- Polls
- Raffles and giveaways for originals
- Putting money toward originals (i.e. You pay $50 a month and when you have enough built up I'll mail you the piece of your choice)
For reference, the goal of this patreon would be to expand into the professional fantasy/sci-fi art scene. I'll be trying to step away from both furry art and commissions, not completely, but so they're not the majority of my income and body of work.
So yeah, what kinds of rewards do you like to get from Patreon? Any other thoughts/suggestions you have?

UPDATE: Moved, slight injury
Posted 8 years agoIt's official, I'm now a resident of Charlottesville, Virginia! My mom and I made the drive down on Thursday. I have to say, I've been here 4 days and I already love it. All those stories about southern hospitality are absolutely true. Everyone here is so friendly and helpful! It's also really beautiful. So many green fields and the Blue Ridge mountains and holy shit i have never seen so many cows in my life
Mom and I have a temporary apartment until September, and hopefully by then we'll have closed on the house we're buying.
Unfortunately while packing up the Uhaul in Jersey, I fell on my way out the door and sprained my foot. Right on the arch where all the metatarsals meet. I then had to drive 7 hours to get here, and of course it's my pedal foot. Went to the local clinic Friday morning, and they confirmed it wasn't broken, but put me on crutches and a boot for 3 days. It's supposed to come off tomorrow but the whole foot is still pretty sore so that might be a little early.
Anyway, things are (mostly) looking really good and I'm happy to get back to work :D

UPDATE: Anthrocon Report, Online Sales, Moving
Posted 8 years agoSettled in at home again, which means it's time for a new update!
ANTHROCON:
AC was amazing this year as always, but I wasn't prepared for just how amazing. I swear it gets better and better every year. I shattered my previous record for convention income, and I nudged past it even without the addition of the art show. The art show itself was incredible as well. I sold roughly half of both my general and mature panels, and grabbed a few original pieces of my own from businesswolf and algy85. Also came home with several new prints and pins from lllore, some originals from soulspoison (who I finally got to meet in person after talking to them for like 10 years???), and a few other things as well. I had a ton of fun with great friends, great food, and a plethora of new inside jokes to last us a lifetime (not that that will stop us from making more).
Due to an incident (which has been resolved), I will be enforcing a strict no returns/refunds policy at all future conventions.
ONLINE SALES:
Until now I've always had prints available for order by emailing me. It's been somewhat successful, but horribly inefficient, especially for prints I keep in stock normally anyway. On top of that, my Storenvy is rather empty and I would like to fix that. So I'm going to start offering prints for sale in my Storenvy, as well as originals (including those that didn't sell in the art show!). Many of these prints will be retiring once they're sold out, so get them while you can! If there are any images you'd like a print of that isn't available in my store, or if you'd like it in a different size, you can still custom order them directly from me via email!
I'll be sure to post an announcement when the store is updated!
MOVING:
I'm moving! After living my entire life here in the same 50 mile radius of New Jersey, I'm moving down to Charlottesville, Virginia. My mom and I went down a couple of weeks ago to check it out and immediately fell in love with the area. Seems like a fairly active art community too, so that's gonna be awesome.
Anyway, I'm scheduled to move sometime around the middle of this month. As a result things are a little hectic here. Commissions are going to be a little more delayed than usual, and general online presence may be spotty.
I think that's everything important! Hello to my new watchers and thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hi at AC!

Select Your Hero: Overwatch Fanbook - UPDATE
Posted 8 years agoI FINALLY got the books in today!
It's been a long and arduous saga full of more twists and turns than you can imagine just to get them in-hand, but now that I have them, I have to say I'm thoroughly impressed. The books came out absolutely beautifully, and I'm thrilled to share the pages with such amazing artists!
I will have copies available for sale at Anthrocon next weekend. The book includes an autograph page, where you can either have me sign it (for free!) or get a special sketch commission of your favorite Overwatch character! After the convention, the remaining copies will be available online through my Storenvy.
Sorry for the long wait everyone, but hopefully it proves to be worth it!

Driving. First time driving to AC by myself too. At least it's an easy drive, but very.....very boring lol
Who will you be rooming with?
keedot
sookta
businesswolf
kibawolf-
simpl1
How is the best way to find you?
My dealer table at O-10! Afterward I'll either be in the zoo (excited about the new one) or my hotel room
Are there any panels you might be attending?
Nope. No time for that at AC lol
What do you look like?
Short (4'11"), pudgy, short hair with buzzed sides. Probably wearing a nerd shirt, hoodie, and either a hat or bandanna. Will have my pronoun sign on my forehead as usual.
Will you be suiting?
Nope
Do you do free art?
No, please don't ask. Fastest way to get me to dislike you lol
Do you do trades?
Occasionally. It's rough doing it at a con because of time constraints, but it's not unheard of
What is your gender?
I use he/him pronouns
How tall are you?
4'11"
Can I talk to you?
That's what I'm there for!
Can I touch you?
Socially acceptable touches only please lol
How can I find you?
I'll be chained to my table for most of the con, probably. Otherwise I'll likely be in the zoo. I'll try to keep my location updated on Twitter but I'm historically bad at that lol. If you follow me on Twitter or have my Telegram/phone number, feel free to poke me!
Can I buy you drinks?
If it's closed container, or if it comes directly from the bartender's hand to mine. Not taking any risks on that front!
Can I give you stuff?
As long as there's no expectation for something in return!
Can I hug or snuggle with you?
Hugs are great, just let me know they're coming. And please shower lol. Snuggles are reserved for boyfriend.
Are you nice?
I try to be!
Will you be going to parties?
Nope. Even if I had time, parties aren't really my thing.
If I see you, how should I get your attention?
Just come to my table! If you do and I'm not there, I'm probably just in the bathroom or getting food, I'll be back in a few minutes. If you see me away from my table, just yell Sparta or tap me on the shoulder!
Can I come with you for food/fun/etc?
If we invite you, you're more than welcome to join!
Can I look in your sketchbook?
Absolutely! Just ask permission first, especially if you want to see the adult one.
Can I draw in your sketchbook?
No, please don't! People like to go through my sketchbook to see MY art, so it's a little annoying to have to explain "no I didn't draw that one" every time I'm at a family gathering lol. I'll try to bring my collecting sketchbook, which is art from other people. THAT one you can draw in.
Can I take your picture?
Yes, just let me know first!
Do you do commissions?
I do! I'll be open all weekend, unless I get really swamped before Sunday!
What's your goal(s) for the con this year?
- Make as much money as possible to cover moving expenses
- Go to Nicky's and Grit & Grace and have amazing food and introduce businesswolf to the wonder that is seasoning
- Get a kickass tattoo with my buddies
- Enjoy myself
So who can I expect to see there???
Where are you staying?
Courtyard Marriott
What day are you getting there?
Wednesday afternoon

Artist Meme - Back from FurtheMore!
Posted 8 years agoI'm home from Fur the More, and I had an amazing time! Made some new friends, spent time with some old ones, learned a lot of things, and pulled in more money than I expected to. Now I'm really looking forward to AC!
I'll be updating my commission queue and getting back to work on the commissions I have already either today or tomorrow. In the meantime, have this meme to learn more about me.

UPDATE: OW Book, Dakis, Career
Posted 8 years agoThis is kind of a big update, sorry for the wall of text!
Select Your Hero:
Select Your Hero, the Overwatch fanart anthology book I was a part of, was fully funded! We were worried for a bit when we had one week left and less than ¼ of costs covered, but you guys really pulled through! Thank you to everyone who ordered a copy or reblogged or shared with friends!
Books are supposed to arrive sometime in April, at which point they’ll be available from my Storenvy, as well as at conventions, with the option to put a custom drawing on the book’s empty page!
Zenyatta Dakis:
I was a little disappointed with the turnout for the Zenyatta daki in comparison to Genji, at first. I realize Zenyatta is a far less popular character, but I had a lot of people excited about Zen while I was working on him, so my hopes were high.
I did get enough preorders to fund a shipment, so that’s not a concern. I realized a bit too late that the timing on this one was less than optimal, with everyone paying taxes and then waiting on refunds. I’ll have to see how big a shipment I can get with the money from preorders, but I’m either going to open a second preorder window or offer the stock at preorder prices for a limited time, so those of you who were trying to wait can still have a fair chance.
I also think some people were waiting on the genyatta one, but I’m beginning to worry that the appeal may be too niche to be feasible. I’ll probably have a sort of sign-up sheet to gauge how many people are seriously interested.
And yes, I do have more dakis planned, both Overwatch and not, don’t worry.
Art & Life:
I dunno what happened exactly, but yesterday and today have been suddenly much better art and mood-wise than pretty much the entire rest of the month haha. I have a new adoptable waiting in the wings and ideas for several more on the way. Also started some watercolor practice that’s turning out really nice, so I’ll have a new original available soon.
I’ve been thinking about my brand and online presence lately. I own the domain spartadogillustration.com, but I know fuck all about coding or how to find a server or anything like that. I know how to modify the code for tumblr themes, and that’s about it. Also wondering about the practicality of it, for the type of work that I do. I don’t know many people who seek out the personal websites of furry artists or fanartists. They just go to their FA, Tumblr, etc. Websites always seemed to be more for people looking for “””professional””” work, which is a whole other world that both intrigues and terrifies me. On the other hand it would be nice to have my TOS and contact info all in one place, but the idea of updating a portfolio of sorts sounds exhausting too.
I’ve also been considering making an Artstation (or rather, actually using the one I have rather than just logging in to fav stuff). It’s kind of the same issue, where it’s more for industry professionals, or people looking to become industry professionals. But I’m wondering if it wouldn’t be a bad idea to surround myself with that kind of artwork and experience, even if I’m unsure about that particular career path. It never hurts to make connections, right?
And finally, on a similar note, I’ve been wondering if I should divide my business a little bit. I usually advise artists against this, as it just kind of scatters clientele rather than redirect them. But I’ve noticed I do two very different kinds of art: my default style, which is more, well, stylized, and usually erotic or at least suggestive, and my super realistic pet portraits and wildlife art that’s meant to be matted and framed and hung up on your wall. And I’ve noticed a pretty big disconnect between the two in terms of attention. The people who follow me for my Overwatch fanart or furry porn probably don’t care about the 8x10 graphite on toned paper fully rendered snow leopard piece I just finished, and the people who like my realistic display pieces and want a pet portrait might be a bit put off by the giant horse cock and rampant Rule 34 that litter my galleries lol. It’s also much harder to market the more realistic work when I have so much of my default style in between.
I’m not sure what I’m going to do regarding any of that just yet. Just stuff I’m thinking about.
Also, before anyone asks: commissions are still closed. Slowly working through the waitlist, trying not to push myself too hard. Thanks for your patience!

2017 Update - Email, Expanding, Moving!
Posted 9 years agoWell, the new year is rolling in, which means it’s time for some changes, both for my business and my life.
First thing’s first, the part that affects you guys:
There won’t be any major changes really, partially just putting this here for my own reference. I plan on changing my email account. There’s nothing wrong with artbysparta@gmail, but I’d prefer something that has my entire business name in it. I already made an account for spartadogillustration@gmail, so now that’s the one I’ll likely be using. Unfortunately I still have a large number of business cards that have my old email on it I’m going to try to get rid of them all at Anthro New England, and then I’ll see if I can have all of the email from that account forwarded to the new one, or something like that. But yeah, I’ll gradually be switching over to that email.
Second, and this is a pretty minor thing really, I think it’s time for some new graphics. My stream announcement, offline and setup images, banners and avatars across sites, all that stuff is super outdated now. Time for a refresh. No idea how long that’ll take me, since it at least some of it will be new art made just for that.
Third, not so much a change as just exciting news: I’m making a living wage!!! I don’t want to say exactly how much I pulled in this year, but it’s enough to prove that this can without a doubt be a sustainable solo income for me. It’s solidified my resolve and inspired me to put that much more effort into my business next year. Time to look into new merch options, new conventions, and new opportunities in general. We’ll see how much I regret it come tax season LOL. But thank all of you guys for making this a possibility, and as cheesy as it sounds, for literally making my dream come true.
And finally, I'm moving! I don't want to say why just yet, and I don't even know where, but I'm planning to be out of this house by the end of next year or beginning of 2018. I've got some good savings built up (thanks to the puppy fund; that's being repurposed into the moving out fund, much to my chagrin), and now it's just a matter of waiting for some other factors to fall in line.
So. That’s where we’re at. I’m honestly really looking forward to 2017, for art and life. Hopefully it doesn’t take another nosedive like 2016 did haha.
Thanks for taking the time to read, and happy new year!

BIG UPDATE: Diversifying, merchandise??? - OPINIONS PLS
Posted 9 years agoHi guys!
I'm sure some of you have noticed I've been a little sparse for awhile. That's mostly because battleferrets was here visiting for a month and a half, and it turns out cuddles and smooches are really distracting in the best way possible. I had to stop streaming for a bit at the beginning of the visit for Furpocalypse, then I did a little bit, and then I stopped again because I wanted to spend as much time with him as possible for the last week or so. But, now he's back home safe and sound in Canadialand so I should have my schedule back to normal by next week.
I also want to get back to more furry and monster art, and also diversify beyond what I do already. As I'm sure you all know, I kind of got hooked on Overwatch, and then my Overwatch art became really popular on Tumblr pretty much overnight. That motivated me to draw more of it, but it's kind of....all I've been drawing for about 6 months lmao. And don't get me wrong, I still love drawing it. I don't plan on stopping Overwatch fanart any time in the forseeable future. I just don't want to be just The Overwatch Artist. I've always been that way. I don't like being pigeonholed, because I don't like being limited in what I get to draw. I get bored if I do the same thing for too long. That hasn't happened with Overwatch yet, but I want to re-diversify before it does.
So yeah, I'm going to be doing more furry art. I hope to be opening commissions soon, and I have two Christmas-themed YCHs planned that should be up within a week or so. Also, we went to the Philadelphia Zoo this past weekend, and that's got me wanting to do more wildlife art (I got some amazing photos of the Siberian tigers, snow leopard, lowland gorilla, and a few snakes that would make awesome artwork). And on top of that, my boyfriend being here and playing Arkham Knight rekindled some of my love for the Batfamily and Rogues Gallery, so I might try to do some fanart of that too. I've got a picture of Poison Ivy in mind...
And finally, I've been dipping my toes into the merchandise pool. I have Genji dakimakuras that were a surprising success, with at least one or two more OW characters lined up. Maybe I'll end up doing some other fandom characters, or some generic furries, if there's enough interest. It also got me thinking about other forms of merch. T-shirts, bags, electronics cases, etc. I already have a RedBubble that lets you put my art on all of those things, but they're extremely limited in the content I'm allowed to upload due to copyright and content laws. That wouldn't be a problem if I was printing and shipping it all on my own. And now with my Storenvy up and running, it's not overly difficult to do that either.
I actually have a few questions for you guys in regard to merch:
- What kind of merch do you buy? Shirts, posters, phone cases, etc
- What kind of art do you buy on merch? Fanart, generic furries, wildlife, fantasy, etc
- Are there any pieces I've done already that you'd be interested in as merch?
I think that just about covers it. I do have a couple big projects coming up this month that I don't want to talk about just yet, but I'll announce them soon enough. I'm super excited about them ;)

Home from Furpocalypse
Posted 9 years agoAnd I have never been so fucking glad for a convention to be over. It was abundantly clear that the staff was either pitifully short-handed, hilariously incompetent, or both. In fact I found out exactly why, but I can’t really say why in case it gets out who told me. Don’t want to get anyone in trouble.
So I got some red flags months ago that should’ve clued me in, but Fur the More gave me red flags too and I had a great time there, so I didn’t think much of it for a while. Back in like, July or August I emailed the Furpoc dealer staff asking how to register an assistant. They answered me saying that in about a week (after that email) there would be a page on the website that would let me do that, and the person offered to contact me directly when it opened so I would know. I was very appreciative of that. Weeks went by with no answer. Sometime in September I figured he probably just forgot to email me, so I went to check the website. The website was completely different. I didn’t know where anything was, nevermind the new assistant reg page. So I emailed them again. They said they could register my assistant for me as soon as I sent his information, and they’d send me a paypal invoice for his badge. I sent his information.
Never got an invoice.
So like two weeks before the con I have to fucking @ them on Twitter to get their attention, and they finally send me the invoice, and I get my assistant reg’d. Great.
Now a week before the con, the dealers finally get a map and schedule for the dealer room (which is part of the reason I didn’t do a map announcement like I do for other cons). Well, most of them. I had to send the information myself to a few friends because they never got that email. But anyway, I’m reading the schedule and I find out that the art show setup is 12-3pm on Friday….while dealer hours are 12-6pm on Friday. I’m not going to take half my sales day to go set up, especially not with my assistant, who has social anxiety and has literally never been to a convention before and isn’t even from this fucking country, alone for three goddamn hours to deal with customers without my help. Not fucking happening. So I @ them on twitter again, since that’s what got their attention last time. Nothing. Try again two days later. Nothing. Email the dealer staff two days before the con explaining this, and finally get an email saying they’ll ask the art show guy, and later another one saying they’ll let us in early. No word on time or anything. Whatever, better than nothing.
Took two detours on the drive up because my GPS makes no fucking sense, and I can’t read street signs. Finally get there and we’re at the Super 8, because due to a lack of communication with some friends (on both parts, I think) I couldn’t get a room in the main hotel. Whatever, it’s a really short walk, even shorter drive. Go to set up, realize I forgot my crossbars so I can’t hang my banner. Later realized I also forgot my bristol, which is kind of what I use to do all of my convention commissions.
I sent my assistant to find out what time we’re allowed to set up for the art show, and he came back and said “sometime between 8 and 12, probably after 9″. Which is fine, it’s not gonna take me four hours to set up. So I go in the next morning a little after 9. No one’s in the art show room. I go to the dealer register in the next room over and ask if we’re allowed to go in and set up, they say yes. Now, I was expecting 4x2 peg boards like the ones Anthrocon uses, but no, they were 6x3 or 6x4 metal grates, like big versions of the cubes dealers use all the time, with this really thick black felt draped over it. I go back over to ask if we’re allowed to take the felt off, because I don’t know how they expect us to hang anything through the felt. The guy says no, the head of the art show wants us to keep the felt on, and we’re supposed to stab the hooks through it. He then goes on to say that he doesn’t know why the felt is so thick and doesn’t know what the art show organizer was thinking. He says he’s gonna go find the guy and send him over. It takes him over an hour to fucking get there, and by the time he does, we’re already almost completely set up because we got tired of fucking waiting. One of my mature panels was completely unusable because it had a DOUBLE layer of felt, but it was all one piece. We ended up just moving the pieces from that panel onto the others. When the guy got there we told him that panel was unusable and I was already set up, but the person on the other side wouldn’t be able to use it either. He was just like “oh I can fix that” and cut the sheet in half. I could’ve fucking done that myself. Whatever, it was done, went back to the dealer room.
Friday night they didn’t announce that the dealer room was closing. I got up and left on time but a lot of dealers got stuck 10+ minutes late because customers were lingering after closing time. There were 2-3 tables that were completely empty either because the dealers didn’t show up or staff didn’t assign them to anybody, I dunno.
There was a catered dinner Friday night for dealers and supersponsors that, for some reason, assistants don’t get to go to. I wasn’t gonna ditch my boyfriend to get free food so I spent all day Friday asking other dealers if they weren’t going so I could find him a ticket…..but then found out that literally no one but me got a ticket at all. They were just checking badges. Raya ended up getting us in anyway, but just…holy shit the lack of organization.
Saturday was better, except the dealer room head was fucking asleep at opening so we opened late. Also someone literally saying to the artist next to us, “Do you know of any artists who are cheaper?”
Saturday night we were waiting for Rocky Horror to start and I overheard someone saying that so many people were talking about how bad the con was on social media that four hundred people just fucking left
Sunday was fine until it was time to check out. I went to go pick up my art from the art show and, yet again, the organizer was no where to be found, and I couldn’t leave until he was there. Sat there for probably 20-40 min waiting for him to show up, and when he did, he just went “oh. if you’re good I’m good.” and I left.
Then I went to the register after the den closed to get my art show money. Den closed at 4, I got paid sometime around 6. And I was near the front of the line. We went to pack my dealer shit into the car, came back and sat with Raya to keep him company. He didn’t get paid until about 7:30, and there were about a dozen people behind him. When he was next in line they sent someone down the line asking if people would be okay taking their entire payment via Paypal, because then they just need an email and those people wouldn’t have to wait on line. Why they couldn’t do that almost three hours earlier I have no idea.
I’m probably forgetting some things, to be honest. There was also a lot of really dumb shit that happened with friends, customers, my Square reader, Chinese food, but none of that was the con’s fault. It was just icing on the cake. It was bad to the point that I was actually hoping I didn’t make that much money so I would have an excuse not to come back next year. (Un?)fortunately, that was not the case.
SO. Needless to say, I am absolutely thrilled to be home again. Gonna take the rest of the week off to just relax and play Overwatch again, and then things will be back to normal for the remainder of the year. Thank fucking god. I put my two take-home commissions on my regular queue since they're both digital, so I'll start them on my regular work schedule starting Monday.

What species/couples/threesomes do you want to see?
Posted 9 years agoI'm getting a few last-minute pieces ready for the AC art show, but I'm not sure what species to do. This is what I have so far:
General show:
- Tiger
- Cat
- Maned wolf
- Deer x2
- Betta (the fish)
- Macaw
- Husky x2
- Western dragon
- Jersey Devil
Adult show:
- Sabertooth solo
- Bull solo
- Horse solo x2
- GSD solo
- Fox solo
- Akita couple
- Husky trio
Please keep in mind, these are designed to sell! As much as I'd love to draw a pangolin or other weird obscure animals, I need to make sure someone will love the species enough to buy the piece!
SO YEAH, what do you wanna see? You can give me species, gen vs adult, pairing/trio ideas, themes, whatever! I won't get all of them done but maybe they'll get used next year, if anything!

Do you/your character(s) have a crush on mine?
Posted 9 years agoSaw a thing on Tumblr about whether or not you're okay with people and/or their characters being attracted to your characters and I got curious.
I’m pretty laid back about this tbh. I won’t be weirded out by you/your characters having crushes on mine! In fact I kind of encourage it because I think it’s super cute and I like meeting my friends/followers’ ocs. Plus I do it so if I said no I’d be kind of a hypocrite lmao
Just for clarification, here’s a rundown of my “rules”:
YES:
- Let your characters interact with mine
- Let your characters have crushes on/be attracted to mine
- TELL ME ABOUT IT!!!! SHOW ME YOUR BABIES LET’S INTRODUCE THEM
- Draw art of/write fics of your ocs/you with mine, just ask permission first if it’s NSFW and I don’t know you well (friends know what I’m okay with so they’re good). If it’s SFW go nuts!
- Keep their sexualities in mind? I gotta update my character page but you can always ask if you’re not sure! I suppose you can still draw/write them outside their actual sexuality as an AU but I’d rather keep that part canon
- Commission me to draw your characters with mine! SFW or not, long as it’s not Sparta or Glitch I’ll probably say yes! I usually keep their sexualities in mind too.
NO:
- creepin’ on me, Sparta, or Glitch. Things I consider “creepin” include but are not limited to: telling me your fantasies, drawing porn of them without consent (or at all, in Sparta’s case), telling me you masturbate to pictures of them, not taking no for an answer. Fantasies n whatnot are fine for other characters
- automatically expecting me to make any relationships canon. If they make a good couple, maybe. But don’t expect it right off the bat.
- using my characters in art/fic that is NOT intended as fan/gift work. Basically, just credit and show me lol
- Making money off my chars. Just don’t take commissions of them, problem solved lol
I think that’s pretty straight-forward, and probably more info than was necessary, but I know a few of my characters have some devoted fans so it doesn’t hurt!
If you have any questions or want togush share, feel free to comment or note me! I love talking about character interaction
