Business Ideas, Switching accounts? Need opinions.
Posted 12 years agoHey everyone! I hope you're all super ready for Halloween because I know I am! But as Halloween approaches I'm starting to think more about the Christmas season and about my professional career. I am in the process of making my art into much more of a serious thing financially, because let's face it I'm getting ready to graduate soon and I would really like to use my degree in the future. And so I am considering a lot of things business wise. I plan on going about getting tax information for the new year so that I can start paying taxes on what I do, therefore allowing me to sell more things. I am also going to be opening up an Etsy shop this weekend with the stickers I had for sale during anthrocon starting out, and I will be uploading some new sticker designs along with some holiday themed things very soon. I will also be opening commissions for the holiday season very soon, so if you would like something from me before Christmas keep an eye out over the next couple of weeks!
I am also considering switching user accounts. Sporkyd00m is a username I came up with when I was 14 and I have been wanting to change it to something different for a while now. I would like to use a combination of my real name and the username PixelSunshine when dealing with selling my artwork online. I am just debating on whether or not it is worth it to switch usernames and start fresh. Has anyone else done this? Did you feel like it was worthwhile or did you lose something when switching online identities?
If anyone has any advice for me regarding running a business for your artwork I would love to hear it. I'd really love to be able to make artwork for a living one day, and every little step toward that counts! All of your opinions and support mean the world to me so I would love to know what you guys think!

Some Thoughts on Work and Passion
Posted 12 years ago I've had a hard time keeping a job over the years. I've worked a lot of retail jobs, and one restaurant job previous to my current one. I had a hard time keeping any of these because I was absolutely miserable. Granted, not many people wake up in the morning and look forward to going to work, but this was a different level of hatred. I remember crying so many times on my breaks at walmart. I remember going home after a shift at FYE and being so incredibly pissed off at how my manager treated me. I wondered if I would ever find anything better or if I would be forever doomed to work mentally degrading jobs with people that I fucking hated.
At the end of the semester I applied for a photography and videography position. I had just learned how to use After Effects and Final Cut Pro and was super confident about getting this position since it was just through the school. I spent so much time to put together a demo reel and I made sure to be super professional during the interview. A week went by, and I was so hopeful to have a chance at a resume builder. Turns out that I didn't get the job. I was really upset at first, and felt pretty useless. I ended up calling back to this little cafe/restaurant that my friend had gotten me to apply for. The manager said I could come in and see how I liked it for a day.
I applied to be a dishwasher, realizing that it wasn't the most glamorous position, but shit at least I wouldn't have to deal with the public. I went to my first day and had a blast. I loved the people I worked with, they were funny and vulgar and laid back. The food was fabulous. And I was being offered $8 an hour which was better than the $7.25 I had been paid for the last 3 years at other jobs. So I took the job and was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed being there.
I've been working there for going on 3 months now and have definitely exited my honeymoon period with it, yet I still don't hate my job by any means. Yes, I'm really tired after scrubbing dishes for 9 1/2 hours without much of a break. But you know what? Those are the fastest 9 1/2 hours that I've ever experienced. Yes, sometimes my coworkers can be pricks. But working in a kitchen I can be a sarcastic ass to them all day and its pretty well accepted. Kitchen humor is a beautiful art.
But I think the biggest determining factor about my job, and why I still don't hate it, is that I genuinely care about this place. I want it to succeed. When I was in high school a cafe opened up downtown, and it was my favorite place in the entire world. I didn't have internet, so I would go there to get online, get a coffee, look at some artwork and hang out with my friends. It was the only place in town other than walmart that you could acceptably spend time with people. This place meant a lot to me.
My sophomore year of college I was heading back home and asked a friend if he wanted to meet me there. He told me that it had closed down a few months earlier. It broke my heart to see this place, this oasis in the middle of small town west virginia, shut down, and to know that the owners were now very broke because of it. Till this day they have not sold the building, and every time I go back home it grows more and more decrepit, and the price on the for sale sign gets lower and lower. The cafe I work at now is everything that cafe from my home town ever wanted to be. And I do not want to see it come to the same fate.
My manager held a kitchen staff meeting today to talk about some issues. She was very angry about a lot of things, but it was a justifiable anger. She lets us know where she is coming from as the boss, and that makes me respect her so much more than any other manager that I have ever had. I respect that this is her business and her livelihood, and I truly feel that she respects me as a human being unlike most of the other people I've worked for in the past. She is a really strong person, and even though a lot of people tend to think that she's a bitch, I've come to learn that if someone somewhere isn't saying something bad about you, you are a complete pushover and won't get anywhere in life. Enemies make us stronger in that sense.
So even though I may just be a dishwasher at some hippie cafe, I really fucking care about this place. I care about my coworkers and I care about my boss.
When you truly give a shit about something, the little things tend to not matter as much. And that goes for artwork as well. If you do not have that passion to do something, then it will seem so much more difficult to do. It will be work. And that's why I believe so many people give up. It isn't something that just happens over night. It takes so much time and frustration that it isn't even funny. But if you really fucking care about it, and truly want to improve, then those little bumps in the road won't stand a chance.
So all in all, whether you're washing dishes or doing artwork or whatever else you might be doing in your life, find something that you're passionate about and do it as well as you possibly fucking can. Because if you really care about it, all the negative stuff won't even matter. Being in love with your work and watching the hours flow past like water is as close to bliss as one can get. Find that passion and go after it.

Post Anthrocon Art Sturf
Posted 12 years agoHey everyone! Just thought I'd update you all with art stuff from Anthrocon. I've decided that I am really going to try and become more comics focused over the next year and will hopefully be posting some stuff very soon! I met some great comic artists and writers there and attended a panel that just really got me thinking about the direction that I want to take my artwork. I've also decided that even with as many wonderful people I meet every year doing artist alley, I will not be doing it at Anthrocon in future years. However, I am considering possibly signing up for a dealer's table potentially, depending on what I can crank out merchandise wise and how long it will take me to obtain a business license and all that jazz.
Thanks to all you guys that supported me and stopped by just to say hi! It was super great meeting new faces and seeing old ones again!

ANTHROCON MEME BECAUSE WHY THE HELL NOT
Posted 12 years agoSo I attempted doing this a week ago drunk and it was a huge mess and I never posted it. So have this one instead.
How do you want to be addressed?
Sporky is always good!
Where will you be?
I'll be at artist's alley at some point over the weekend (I'll have my big green sporkyd00m roadsign again). I'll also be meandering around the con fursuiting and such. If you see a reeaaallly short wild dog shouting obscenities too loudly it is probably me.
Where are you staying?
Westiiiinnn
Who will you be with?
People of the mostly human variety
What is your gender?
I am of the withoutapenis clan
How old are you?
Twentay one
How tall are you?
5'2"
What do you look like?
Tiny. Wavy hurr. Blue eyes. My nose kind of looks like a dorito from the side.
Can I talk to you?
No you must communicate with me purely through interpretive dance.
Can I buy you a drink?
Possibly, but then I may feel obliged to draw you something. AND TRUST ME YOU DO NOT WANT INTOXICATED ME TO DRAW YOU SOMETHING.
Are you taken? Are you looking for a 'mate'?
No and no.
Can I touch you?
Only if it is a crucial part of your interpretive dance communication.
Can I touch your friends?
The questions on these memes always make me wonder about the kind of people who write these things. But to answer the question, probably not. They might hit you. Unless you have reeeaaallly good reason, I.E. interpretive dance communication.
Can I hug you?
If you promise me you have showered within the last 3 days. BUT YOU HAVE TO PINKIE PROMISE OKAY?
Are you nice? Or do you think so (no personal references needed)?
If I were to make a list of people who think I'm nice and those who would have to wildly disagree I'd say it'd be 50/50. But I do my best.
What days will you be attending?
ALL THE DAYS
Will you be suiting?
YUS
Do you do free art?
PROBABLY NOT. UNLESS YOU GET ME FOOD THAT IS NOT POISONED. THEN WE MAY STRIKE A DEAL. BUT THEN AGAIN I GUESS THAT ISN'T REALLY FREE.
Do you do commissions?
YES! I will be doing some variation of traditional badges and sketches at the con. I will also be doing take homes but THEY WILL BE DIGITAL ONLY. I'M NOT MAILING YOU GUYS STUFF, SAVE THE TREES AND POSTAGE.
Can I talk about/do drugs in front of you?
Only if done in an incredibly entertaining fashion. And you realize that I am in no way affiliated with your shenanigans ya crazy kids.
Can I invite you out for food/fun/etc?
Depending on how dead I am by the point of your invitation. By sunday I'm kind of just a zombie. AND ZOMBIES ARE NO FUN TO HAVE OUT FOR FOOD/FUN/ETC. THEY ARE UNPLEASANT PARTY GUESTS.
Can I come with you for food/fun/etc?
If I invite you. But my invitation will be through interpretive dance, so you must also pass the test of understanding that I am even inviting you.
Can I take pictures with you?
If I'm in suit then go for it! If not.....only if there is gratuitous amounts of interpretive dance going on.
If I see you, how should I get your attention?
......Be creative.
How can I contact you?
SEND ME A NOTE ON THE FA. OR CARRIER PIGEON. OR INTERPRETIVE DANCE.

Lots and lots of life updates!
Posted 12 years agoHey everyone!
So I'm finally done with school until August! Woohoo! I couldn't be happier to be done with that semester, I'm glad that I didn't die. I also managed to somehow get all A's and B's too. I'm still not quite sure how, but hey, I'll take it.
I just moved into my new apartment with
zraya and am pretty excited to get it all set up and decorated. It's a lot cheaper than my previous apartment but it is super old school in that the walls are decked out in wood paneling and flower wallpaper. But if there is anything I can fix I guess it would be ugliness. Hopefully we will be able to get internet hooked up in the next couple of days. Right now I'm at my old apartment catching up on internet and laundry before the lease is completely up, because the new apartment doesn't have a washer and dryer in it (yay quarters!).
I recently got a new job too seeing as the dining hall that I worked at shut down for the summer. I am now a dishwasher at a vegan/vegetarian option cafe. I really love this job so far. Granted, I feel like I'm going to die during lunch rush, but other than that it is a good place to work. My coworkers are as crazy as I am, we get to jam to loud vulgar music, the hours fit my schedule well, and free food! Free healthy food. I'm in heaven. I had a black bean burger on pita with lots of avocado for lunch today and it was absolutely magnificent. And the girl that trained me works with the baker so she let me sample a bunch of cookies and brownies today. It's wonderful.
So yeah, all in all life is going in a good direction right now. I'm pretty content. Hopefully the rest of the summer will keep at this pace!
Also! I know I've been talking about opening commissions for like a month now (life keeps getting in the way and I hate to open when I'm super busy!) but I really will be opening VERY soon. I will probably put together my price guide tomorrow. It will be similar to past ones, but with a few new options. Keep an eye out!
Well I hope you all are having a great start to your summers (and to those of you in the southern hemisphere, winter)! I will hopefully have internet again soon!
