Selling physical art

Selling Original Art Commissions
Posted 5 years agoI have a bunch of commissions I bought over the years and don't really have a lot of use for them, what is the procedure for selling them?
Would anyone like to help out an idiot?
Posted 6 years agoOk, so I'm out two grand on a moron gamble. Not on the horses or at the casino, but I trusted someone way more than I should have. There was no real reason to not trust the person, but obviously that was a stupid thing of me. I am writing a comic series (well, more than one, but the focus is on this) and because I had worked with someone for over a decade on art and I wanted to bring them along on something I consider huge, I put them on retainer. It was my gamble, my, I am investing in this to make sure it starts moving and as the comic was being made, I would do something like IGG to start funding the creation of it physically as well as recoup the investment and start funding more issues at the same time. It wasn't and isn't about strictly making money. If I could make the series and not make money, I'd be ok with that. It's a great story, I think everyone would be down with it.
So I went all in with it. I dropped the money on him and things started out ok. Got some early page stuff, they needed to be edited, some panels needed to be moved, some in betweens needed to be put in, but it was progress. Very quickly though, communication slowed down, progress slowed down and because there seemed to be some kind of confusion, I scaled back the level of art. I was fine with it being sketched as long as we cleaned it up before finishing. I liked the style of it that way as the story is placed in a less developed time, so it could look more in place with that setting.
Less than half a year, progress stopped, by half a year, communication stopped. I have zero pages that I can use. Like I said, it was too early to even show things seriously to anyone and needed reworkings and more in betweens to make things actually make sense. This was supposed to be done by....Juneish of last year at the latest. The agreement was that we would do as much as possible on the comic between commissions. That's why I said Juneish. I was being as sympathetic to the artist's life that I could.
I can't do a chargeback on Paypal even if I wanted since I put it as friends/family so he wouldn't be dinged with fees for it, but I also know that even after a few months, if I went after him for the money, I would financially destroy him and I can't do that to someone else. Even if I took out the amount for the partial work, it would wreck him. Most people don't have that kind of money sitting around.
I didn't gamble in the sense that I couldn't survive without the money. I know that doing that is insane. My issue is that I can't even move forward with this project because I don't have the money to invest in it now. And even after all this time, I see that this thing will be amazing. I am not saying this just because it's mine. I'm saying it because I would buy this thing if I saw it. I would watch the movie. I would watch the TV show.
Historically, I have had crap luck with crowdfunding, which is part of why I decided to go all in on this myself. One way or another, this was going to happen.
I am asking for help and yes financial help. Word of mouth is good too. I am asking for any help that you can provide. I will be trying to figure out the logistics of it all, but I will do what I can to repay that help in some physical way. First and foremost, I will be putting your name into the comic and if you wanted, I would find a place for you as a character in the comic. Granted, it would be a limited availability because the issue doesn't have hundreds of people in it.
If you can help, I appreciate it. I don't really have anyplace else to ask on help and just want to get this thing out of my head and into people's hands.

A Question about Artists and Commissions
Posted 6 years agoOk,
if you've paid someone up front for something and they stop updating you and don't respond to any communications and you paid them as a friend/family on paypal so they don't get pinged for fees, what do you do?

What you may not understand about me historically
Posted 8 years agoOne. I don't steal art or claim to have drawn anything of skill. Even bad art I have paid for, I have not said that I drew it.
Two. Unless it is a copyrighted/trademarked character, I have created every single character posted on here. I have been involved in furry for over 25 years in some way and have been artified since 1999 or so when I commissioned my first artist.
Three. I have spent thousands of dollars commissioning artists over the last 18 or so years. Some at conventions, but most have been through here. I have commissioned around 100 artists and have well over 500 pieces that I have paid for.
Four. I have created every single character in the same way and each one has been their own entity. Each one has a general background, personality, occupation, interests. I don't copy, I don't steal. I am not saying that they are all unique in that you wouldn't see something similar, but who they are was uniquely designed and their body doesn't have form until I have a solid idea of who they are.
Five. I have created hundreds of individual characters. There is only one that is based on a copyrighted character (Charlene Sinclair) and even then, I took her in a different direction.
If you see it on here, it was purchased by me or in the very rare cases, an artist drew it for me for free.
I am not saying this as a boast. I just want to make things very clear that while I can't drew worth a crap, I have paid a lot of money for the art I have gotten and for art that will never be created. I will continue to support artists that I have connected with who are good, honest and put out a good product at a reasonable rate.
I am also going to start talking to artists about creating a way to offer new characters for people complete with a description or two and some artwork at a reasonable price in sketch form, something they can pay the artist to go further than a sketch, but that gives people who are stuck, something whole to show off with.

Graphic Novels
Posted 9 years agoSo I have an idea for a superhero and a story, but am trying to figure out how to find an illustrator. I haven't had any real luck finding illustrators for my children's books either, so does anyone have any ideas?
Children's bunny book
Posted 10 years agoAnyone wanna doodle for a children's bunny book I am writing? I can't promise you glory, but I can promise you a 50/50 cut of all money made on the book as well as 60%...what are those, merchandise rights or whatever it is called.
Poser Pro 2012
Posted 11 years agoWould any artist be interested in trading my digital edition of Poser Pro 2012 for a comparable amount of commissions?
Harumph!
Posted 11 years agoGetting a little tired of having to wait for work from multiple artists and creators for upwards of nearly a decade, some of which are just popping out stuff left and right on a semi regular basis and not hearing anything. Two of which are professional level projects that are pretty much holding me up, but can't really do anything but faux bitch about it.
