Posted 10 years agoTemporary pause on commissions
Posted 10 years agoNew commissions are temporarily on hold. They may still be requested, however they will not be officially accepted or worked on until I am able to receive and acquaint myself with a new tablet. My current one is beyond the point of comfortable usability.
Commissions I received prior to this announcement will continue to be worked on in the meantime

"Possum! Where have you been and why do you suck at posting"
Posted 10 years agoHello again - I realize I've been slow to post new stuff here, and the reason for that is I've been exceptionally busy this year over at my
stinkslinky account where pretty much all of my recent commission work has been going, especially since January when I ran into a tax hiccup. Fortunately that's been cleared up and my queue has been cleared out and I'm slowly but surely getting back into the swing of things as I work my way towards a fresh, shiny new tablet to replace my ungracefully aging Monoprice.
My focus lately has been more on improving my artwork and hopefully new and more cooperative hardware will serve to stimulate my productivity. In the meantime I hope to make myself more active here and will be making an attempt to stream and take commissions and flesh out this gallery with more personal art when I can.

Emergency Collab Commissions!
Posted 10 years agoLong story short: Got a raw deal after trying to help out a family member last year and found out that I now owe $142 in sales tax to the Board of Equalization due by February second.
Due to my tablet's recent wonky tracking, I'm unable to sketch as finely as I'd like, HOWEVER the very awesome
terribad (seriously, go check him out if you haven't already) has offered to help by teaming up with me for collaborative commissions!
He'll be doing the linework while I will be colouring/painting. EXAMPLE
We would be asking $60 apiece, UP TO two characters. Extra characters, or exceptionally complicated characters will be subject to additional charge.
Due to the urgency of the situation as well as the less than expeditious nature of Paypal withdrawals, we'd have to ask that payment be sent in full, in advance once the idea has been approved (ideally before January 28th).
Send me a note if interested! I appreciate any help!

HELLO
Posted 10 years agoHello everybody! I hope you all had and are having a good holiday season and those that celebrate got lots of fancy loot and/or had good times with loved ones.
Just popping in to say hello and let you guys know what's been goin' on.
My tablet remains frustrating and mucky, but I think if I can find the issue with my mouse driver I can solve that maaaaaaaaaybe.
In the meantime, I've been wanting to get back into traditional art so I may be focusing more on that for a while. Unfortunately my old scanner from yonks ago doesn't actually work so it may be a while before I can get any of that up, but I'm gonna work on figuring something out!
That about covers everything, so I'll see you all in 2015 and I hope you guys have a good one!

My personal thoughts on Patreon
Posted 11 years agoSo as I'm sure pretty much all of you have noticed, Patreon has taken off quite a bit lately.
For those unaware of what Patreon is, it is a crowdfunding website which allows consumers the ability to directly support their favourite content creators via a monthly subscription chosen by the consumer - the patron - in exchange for bonus content and prizes and such and such.
Sounds neat, right?
Many content creators, especially those in the fields of video making and music, choose rather than to charge for their content, to leave Patreon specifically for special bonus things like contests, giveaways, things of that nature. This is pretty cool and the model I personally feel works best.
However, many other creators choose put a large part, a majority, or, as best I can determine, sometimes even the entirety of their worthwhile content onto Patreon as a kind of paywall. I can't really argue against this per se because as an artist I realize the time and effort that goes into any given piece and it's ultimately up to the artist or musician or video maker or what have you to decide what their time and effort is worth. It can be difficult for an artist to make money off their work and often times the work and effort goes under- or even unappreciated altogether.
On the flip side, though, I also realize how frustrating it can be having content you enjoy that you are unable to access either due to preexisting financial obligations or a lack of funds especially when you don't have the means to acquire those funds.
I've seen a handful of journals by non-artists denouncing the sudden surge in Patreon and they're often accompanied by artists calling the posters and those who agree with them "entitled", which I don't really buy. Sure, there are some smug little turds in the crowd who think artists aren't worth the toilet water they shit in, but a majority of them, to varying degrees of eloquency, are just frustrated by the loss of a lot of the content that they enjoy. I genuinely can not blame them for this any more than I can blame the artists for wanting to make money on their content.
It would be like PBS turning into Pay-Per-View.
In short, It is the artist's decision what they wish to do with their art, but it is the consumer's decision as to whether or not they agree.
If something like Patreon had existed eight or nine years ago when I started becoming active on the internet, I'm not sure I ever would have become the artist I am today, as at least a few of the people who inspired me to pursue art in the beginning now use Patreon as a makeshift pay site rather than merely as an incentive to support the artists.
tl;dr
1: Patreon is cool but I personally feel it easily risks being used too liberally and too uncompromisingly.
2: Artists have the right to determine what their art is worth, and consumers have the right to determine what is and is not worth paying for.
3: Stop acting like little shits to each other.

Hourly Commission Rates
Posted 11 years agoSo I've been considering it for some time, but I'd like to get any feedback you guys might have regarding a switch from flat commission rates to hourly rates.
When I work on a single character coloured image it takes me between 6-10 hours on average. Regardless of the time and effort spent, I charge $20-$35.
If I were to switch to an hourly rate, I'd be fairly confident charging $10/hr (just above California minimum wage) - this would mean a sketch would be around $15, inks around $30, a coloured character around $60 (Please note that these are just estimates and subject to vary)
"Half-hour" charges would be decided at the quarter hour- i.e.: 1h > $10; 1h15m > $15; 1h45m > $20
I'm also inclined to start taking hourly commissions in streams (SOON!!) in which you can "rent" my stream and request anything you like to any amount or degree of polish within my abilities allowed by the time limit
Let me know what you guys think about this change as well as any suggestions you might have!

Situation update and YOUR input
Posted 11 years agoOkay so stream was a bust. Might try again later when I have more time to myself.
At any rate, I'm helping out selling stuff left over from my (former) family business at a flea market and that should give me enough to pay for an internet provider at home assuming I can find one at a reasonable rate.
The ability to stream is the biggest reason I'm interested in acquiring a service provider, since everything else can pretty much be covered at a Starbucks or Mcdonald's. SO, what I want to know is, what do YOU guys want to see when this happens? What suggestions do you have for streams and the like? What would make them more appealing? What recommendations might you have for "advertising" streams?
I have some ideas, but naturally given the situation I haven't had time to put anything to practice or experimentation and any input is useful in helping me orient myself!

The situation (Also I kinda need help)
Posted 11 years agoSo! Net's pretty much been down for the last week or so. Not sure when it'll fully stabilize, but it's been pretty terrible.
Also in about four or five months the municipal network I'm using will probably be shut down so chances are I'll be losing my net altogether unless I can pull in enough money to pay for a proper service provider.
Being able to get a proper ISP would also mean I would be able to stream again, which would be really nice. I miss being able to interact with people while drawing, not to mention streaming was great motivation to draw more frequently and in greater quantity.
Unfortunately, however, that costs money. A lot of money. Which I don't have.
I don't like begging for commissions, and I'm not going to patronize you people with some sob story about my financial situation, but I do need the help and have only a limited time to seek it, so if you or anyone you know is looking for art, I'm offering commissions at five dollars off the normal rates until March 31st
Any signal boost would be much appreciated!

This Machine Surrounds Hate and Forces it to Surrender
Posted 11 years agoGot news that Pete Seeger has passed away at the age of 94.
I remember watching his live performances, and every inch of the man betrayed a true, passionate love for music and a desire to share it with others.
His music, and the joy and passion in his playing is what ultimately inspired me to pick up the banjo, and it makes me profoundly sad to hear of his death, even if it isn't terribly surprising with his age.
Whether you agreed with his political views or not, I don't feel it can be said that he wasn't a genuinely good human being. I don't think I've ever heard a word of ill against him.
May he rest in peace.

Not leaving here, but might as well give people the option. Uploading there might be slow for a while due to slow net and generally just getting used to uploading to more than one site.

Requests! [closed]
Posted 11 years agoI'm bored and my net is slow. Request things!
Dunno when I can upload them, probably'll be in the wee hours of the morning, but they may wind up painted if I like them enough (or just get bored waiting for my net to kick in)
EDIT: Oh god so many. My net derped hard last night as soon as I posted this so it may be a day or two before I can get everything done BUT I'LL TRY.

Beast Mode One
Posted 11 years agoIf you have never heard the atmosphere ripped in half by 7 million pounds of thrust, then you need to watch this. Preferably with headphones; more preferably still, with theatre surround sound.
Saturn V is the single most awe-inspiring feat of human engineering for me. A great and terrible machine that catches my breath and makes my heart flutter every time I find a video of it with its audio restored to its rightful glory.
Oh my god I'm in love with a rocket.
What do YOU want to see more of?
Posted 11 years ago2014 is coming up fast and I'd like to get input from you guys about what you'd like to see more of in my gallery.
Like a particular subject?
Particular style?
More paintings? Cel shading? Sketches?
Areas I might be weaker in and should focus on more?
Let me know and don't be afraid to suggest things I've not done before! I'm always looking to expand my abilities!

Thoughts on art for the new year
Posted 11 years agoLooking back at my art over the course of 2013 I feel like I've improved significantly in some areas, and gotten weaker in others.
I think for 2014 the goal will be to balance aesthetics with dynamics, cos I feel like my posing and anatomy got a little stiff and warped, especially over the last couple months.
I'd like to also work on atmospheric lighting now that I'm getting a little more comfortable with painting and colour in general and it looks much less intimidating than it did before.
So here's hoping for a productive and innovative new year!
