BLFC 2018 was a huge success! + Life updates
General | Posted 7 years agoThanks to everyone who said hello to me and sasharjones at BLFC this year! I had more meaningful interactions than ever before, in no small part due to Sasha and I sharing a space.
-We made enough in the art show to cover one month's rent!
-I made as much this year as I did at last year's BLFC, with one big difference:
Last year I took on 15 commissions.
This year I took only 3 commissions.
-Our two talks, Bridging the Queer Divide in Furry Art and Is Your Furry Art Stale? went very well! Queer Divide didn't have a huge turnout, but those who did show up offered much towards assisting us. In future talks I'd love to provide a handout and a slower cadence to help those with limited language processing abilities (thank you to those who spoke up!).
The theme of this year's BLFC seemed to be people being brave in what they chose to share with us. A lot of bravery happened at our table and at our talks, and as always I couldn't be more thankful for the humility and grace you all continue to share.
LIFE UPDATES:
-We're moving from Austin to Santa Fe next Tuesday
-Livestreaming on Twitch has been delayed; I'm locked out of my account because of 2-step authentication and a terminated phone number. We'll be streaming ASAP once we're moved into our new home.
-Our next conventions are Gen-Con, IlluXCon, Eurofurence, and then MFF, if we can get a hotel room (((((:

This year's EF was an even better opportunity than most to gauge my progress as an individual. One year ago I showed up and knew no German whatsoever, and was just a few days shy of my legal divorce. This year, I may not have been fast-enough to translate but recognized about 50% of the German words spoken around me, and I had already found restoration in a new relationship, despite my desire to be single for the rest of my life!
In 2016 I was humbled by all the diverse cultures and languages surrounding me. I had prided myself on being a good communicator despite my initial social ineptitudes, but found existing in the Anglosphere was only the tip of the iceberg. In 2017, my priority is shifting from relating to others to helping others relate to each other. I'll still study languages to the best of my abilities, but will make active efforts to get my content out to others in Russian, Japanese, and other languages that don't have regular access. This will start by taking my talks and getting them transcribed and translated into the languages that benefit the most international furries.
By the way, my talks went incredibly well! Had a packed room for "Fursonas: Types and Stereotypes. Skyhawk came by later to share aggregate data of e621 labels to marry my subjective observations with his objective observations on furry porn trends. Again, best talk of my life because of the others who show up!
Out of respect to the clients in my queue, I took no new commissions. My existing work is weighing heavily on me, and with the wait that comes from the jobs I'm focused on doing kick-ass work to legitimize my clientele's patience. While I meet those needs, my career will see a shift in print sales, monetizing my abilities as a speaker and educator instead of just a visual artist. This makes more sense for someone who finds his whole life to be a kind of artwork!

Computer Recommendations Completed!
General | Posted 8 years agoI have very exciting news for you all!
Before I say anything, I want to first thank every person who took the time to recommend me something. But of all the people, everruler deserves special thanks for being invested in this idea (moreso than I was initially, as I couldn't imagine buying anything new any time soon!). His generosity in giving me attention and consideration has made me feel very much loved and taken care of.
Thanks to his search and the vast financial generosity of another dear friend, I have a new computer setup coming to our furry commune in a few days! Check the bottom of the journal for the specifics.
Here's why this is exciting: I can finally do streaming again. Anyone who watched my streams before likely remembers when the screen would strobe white during my Alchemy sessions, or how Photoshop would become far less responsive and then flash graphical errors across the screen until I reset my computer. Finally I have hope again in my situation: I can now do personal digital art larger than 3000px on one side, reliably share lectures on Youtube, AND keep a regular stream schedule on Twitch!

I did a technical wall with my 2012 Retina Solid Shell Macbook after the graphics card started shitting on me. It's why I stopped streaming, why Alchemy strobes white whenever I paint, and why Photoshop will blast me with artifacts when I try to work on my larger commissions. After a clean-install that went wrong, I lost some incredibly important files even though I backed up on three sources.. My queue IS being completed though! I thank you all for your patience as I deal with this. This computer issue has been plaguing me for over a year, and thanks to the generosity of my patrons and some choice friends, I'm now finally at a place where I can do something about it.

Dear PC-savvy and/or digital art friends, looking for recommendations for a new portable computer workstation! Looking into a Laptop + screen tablet. I'd go for a workhorse for the home studio, but I'm out-of-town as half the year nowadays. I imagined a basic gaming laptop would likely meet my needs. Any recommendations?
Here's what I'll be doing:
- Carrying my workstation in my big backpack. 20" screen, max.
- 2D commissions using mainly Alchemy (a Java program) and PhotoshopCC.
- Light video/audio editing
- Streaming my work and mic in high fidelity
- Monitor tablet to separate refs and art, and for streaming my work screen exclusively.
- Not for conventions, so an extra power source isn't a big deal.
Here are my needs:
- Must be able to handle intense 2D work and some light video editing. Maybe some 3D later.
- ≥ 8GB RAM.
- IPS display, not TN.
Here's what I DON'T need:
- A Mac. Apple sucks. PC, please. (Unless I finagled an iPad into this system…?)
- Tablet w/o screen. My Intuos is fine at a desk, but I need to save real estate in a mobile stream station.
-Surface Pro. The small Photoshop interface and issues with Photoshop keep it from being an option for me, sadly.
Thanks for your time and input! This is my first time I'm not letting Apple make all my decisions for me. Feels like I'm leaving Latchkey for the first time as an eighteen-year-old!

General | Posted 9 years agoSorry that I didn't post a journal warning you guys. I was in the MFF DD and gave a panel. Both were excellently received!
I had wonderful roommates, a great time watching deriaz kick ass on the table next to me, showing vanderlugt's paintings at my table after he won an award, and was joined by many wonderful people.
Thanks to all those who made this a huge success. I'm looking forward to slamming into my commission queue and kicking ass before Further Confusion 2017!

I had wonderful roommates, a great time watching deriaz kick ass on the table next to me, showing vanderlugt's paintings at my table after he won an award, and was joined by many wonderful people.

FWA 2016 was the best con of my life. More real talk reframing my expectations for my potential than ever before. If you've gone to one of these conventions, you already know how Sunday night is the final quality hangout moment with all the happy tears, right?
Well, every night was like that, even Thursday night.
There were so many wonderful interactions with others that I was more excited than anything to get back home and kick as much ass as possible. For those who showed up to be with me, thank you for all the love you showed me!
Also, finally got to do a Smash tournament for once! Placed 9/72 people, I think.
More meaningful interactions deserve their own comics and emphases. I hope to get that done one day.

Midwest Furfest 2015
MFF was a bittersweet experience. As always, I had the love and support of many friends that provided me with comfort in times of sadness and physical weakness. You all know who you are. Whether you spent time commissioning me, hanging out during dealing or after hours, or participating/following up after my talk, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
General Update
On a personal level, I may currently be in one of the deepest pits of my life. I wasn't well before MFF, and I am now certainly worse-off afterwards. My home life has changed dramatically, maybe permanently, and in the process I lost a critical part of myself of which I'm still trying to find. This is why my commission fulfillment has remained static for the last few weeks. With thanks, I only took on commissions that would excite me, and I still look forward to handling each one with love and my best abilities. Thank you for your patience.
I would like to complete it all before leaving for Anthro New England on January 21. The work I get there will sustain me in a positive direction. If I don't make this goal for myself, I don't know what's waiting for me, but it isn't good. Again, thank you for your love and patience. As always, my queue is linked at the top of every journal.

Furpocalypse Report

As you read, I was one of the Guests of Honor at Furpocalypse 2015. It was a bizarre experience knowing that people would invest money into providing me a room, registration, free merch with my art on it (the glass tumblers were AMAZING and the hoodies incredibly comfy) and give me a nice table location in a dealer's space. I felt a love and appreciation for each individual staff member who helped me. bios and noswift made sure I felt welcomed and taken care of, even in the chaos of setting up on Thursday.
There were some incredible highs and deep lows that proved to me that I am capable of handling almost anything emotionally, and I owe these experiences in no small part to ishaway and :licensedrealtor:. Thank you for being my roommates and teaching me so much.
Thank you to those who showed up to my panel on destructive and constructive pornography, those who danced, drank, played Smash Bros with me, and those who brought me food during dealer hours. And thank you to so many of you for being vulnerable with me about your personal lives. I felt more deeply at this con than I had at any other, and I owe it all to you.
Furpocalypse 10/10, would visit next year.
