Post Con Report: FWA 2013
General | Posted 12 years agoCommission Queue • Ask Me Anything • Art/Life ProTips • Buy Prints!
Back from the convention with a fresh commission queue, a fresh perspective, and more!
I remember cubetriangle and phylum saying FWA was almost like their "home con", as if it held some sort of personal significance to them. This was interesting to me, as my first con was Anthrocon '12, and I assumed that biggest equalled best. But I can safely say the culture and staff made this con stick out for me. Despite what you probably heard about the hotel, the beautiful Peachtree Plaza Westin (I never want to see the word "Peachtree" again) had the most convenient and easily understood layout. The elevators and thin floors were a pain, but that's remedied easily with some line management. I wouldn't mind the Westin next year.
I participated in my first con Art Show. The staffers were friendly and inviting, allowing me to help out and pick the pannel of my choice, and Crush found its way to a loving home!
If you missed me in the Artist Alley, that's because I was bumped to the Dealer's Den after the second day! My spot in the waiting list came through, and I was able to enjoy more space, lighting, and conversation. Rukan was the best table-mate I could have asked for. He kept me company, always making sure I had food, the ability to go to the bathroom, and wore his "fucking cool jacket", as quoted by, like, twenty-five isolated compliments.
Rukan and I also hounded the SSBB table in the game room. We faced a few solid players, too! My attitude towards losing was genuinely positive, as opposed to my past (Brawl isn't usually kind to my heart in this regard).
I met/reconnected with a few people at the con that have this silent but strong energy behind them. These individuals and I share some sort of connection, although I don't fully realize what that entails. The only thing I know for certain is that I should appreciate them as much as possible.
Just like AC, a huge highlight was screwing around with other artists in the evenings. There is something horribly cathartic about drawing oneself as a Sonic the Hedgehog character.
And here's a good note to end on: After FWA I officially want to purchase a realistic partial, and pair it with some dapper outfit.

FWA + Updated Commission Queue + Dealers Den
General | Posted 13 years agoCommission Queue • Ask Me Anything • Art/Life ProTips • Buy Prints!
UPDATE: I'll be in the dealer's den! Turn left and keep going, and you'll see me inside!
I'll be present at Furry Weekend Atlanta! I'm extremely excited for all the untold prospects that await me there! I'll also be bringing my workstation to keep moving on commissions in my downtime.
Here are some questions you may not have asked:
Where are you staying?
The Main Hotel
What day are you getting there and what day are you leaving?
Arriving Wednesday afternoon, leaving Monday morning
Who will you be with?
My non FA friend, Rukan
Who will you hang out with during the convention?
It's Rukan's first furry con, so he and I will be sticking together. I at least want to reconnect with maybemantis, phylum, dwudles, wolfyama, cisqur, et al…. The rest is in the air!
Where/how can I find you?
Artist Alley all day, e'er day
If you have a significant other, will that person be there?
Aw, I wish. You all need to meet Mrs. Stigmata. She's so purty and nice :B
How old are you?
24
How tall are you?
Six-foot-one
What is your gender/preferred pronouns?
Male/Him, His
What do you look like?
Kinda like this, dressed like this.
What do you prefer to be called?
If you can't bear to call me Jonathan, Stigmata is fine. (But real names are my favourite, because they enforce the relationship we have outside of the internet.)
Will you have any fursuits?
Not even close to being in my budget.
Can I touch you?
Oh, furries.
Can I talk to you?
I love meeting people that want to talk to me! Please don't be intimidated by how sad my drawings are sometimes! But please keep in mind that I suffer from Face-Blindess, and normally need other visual cues (friends, clothes, hair, etc…) to ascertain who you are, even if we've met before!
Can I take pictures with you?
I don't smile for photos, but other than that I'm down with it.
Can I visit your room?
I'm sharing it. You have to ask everybody in the room.
Can I stalk you?
OH FURRIES.
Can I buy you drinks?
How nice of you to ask! Thank you!
Can I hug or snuggle you?
Hugging seems—wait, snuggling? Would you be laying by me, or something?
Can I come with you for food/fun/etc?
No one should eat alone! That being said, please let me invite you, rather than your inviting yourself.
Can I draw in your sketchbook?
Any drawings of Kelly or Stigmata will get all my love. <3
Do you do requests/free art?
If I like the character enough I'll probably say something first.
Do you do trades?
Yes, if you:
1) Be my friend, and or:
2) Have an awesome character design
Do you do commissions?
Yes.
Do you have an artist table?
Yes,
Do you do prints?
Yes.
Do you have art in the art show?
Yes.
Is there anything you don't do?
Yes.
Do you go to parties?
Maybe for a bit.
What should I not do around you?
I only want you to be yourself. Insincerity is something I struggle with accepting.
If I see you, how should I get your attention?
"JONATHAN"
"STIGMATA"
"SANDY"
(in that order)
What is/are your goal(s) for this convention?
Sell art, make new friends, meet old friends, explore new territory

General | Posted 13 years agoCommission Queue • Ask Me Anything • Art/Life ProTips
Thanks to all the previous responses. I'm now open for commissions! The price increases if you don't buy quickly, so get in queue sooner than later!
The point of these commissions is just to create something fresh and energetic that paints your character in a unique way, suitable for large printing.
Your character looking cool, $30+tax= $32USD.
These'll be crazy, no standard for the style, but it'll be somewhere around these levels of detail:
Example 1
Example 2
Example 3
<<IN YOUR EMAIL, PLEASE INCLUDE>>
-Some character refs including animal photos from Flickr/Google/Etc…. (This allows me to spend most of my time drawing for you, instead of researching, and helps keep my prices low.)
-Your FA Name
If I can draw the character well, I'll confirm it, and we'll get you a super high-res image for poster-sized printing! Yaaaay!
Email jonathanvair (at) gmail (dotcom)
w/Subject: Stigsketch
If you think anyone would be interested in this sale, please send the info their way. Thanks!

If I ever created a music video:
General | Posted 13 years agoCommission Queue • Ask Me Anything • Art/Life ProTips • Buy Prints!
It would look something like this. Woodkid, started his artistic journey as an illustrator, and then as motion graphic artist/graphic designer. He transitioned into music after all this, a progression which I find to be very unique and inspiring.
I'd love to collaborate with him one day.
I don't tell this to many people, but I've been wanting to put together a hip-hop/rap album for some time, marrying my love of the visual arts with my love of sound, rhythm, and language. But first, I'll keep trying to finish these commissions and continue prepping for FWA.
Thank you to all my new and old watchers for sharing your positive sentiments with me! You have my sincerest appreciation!

My Further Confusion Experience
General | Posted 13 years agoCommission Queue • Ask Me Anything • Art/Life ProTips
Further Confusion was not what I was expecting in any way. It was my first furry convention where I was not tied to an art dealer's table the entire time. Since this came as a surprise, under normal circumstances this would have frustrated and scared me. It was instead very comforting to know I was investing in friendships and trying to have some semblance of business to the best of my abilities.
I don't like the feelings that come from missing out on mentioning people by name, so I'll instead mention that I'm running through all the names in my head and greatly enjoying all the conversations I had. From Manteca to Netherlands, I learned many new things about many new people, and feel closer to my older FA friends than ever before! And my previous and future clients are, of course, a huge blast to speak with! Thanks to all of you that gave me drawings, mentioned encouraging words, or just took the time to tell me a little bit more about your lives. You guys are what make a convention worthwhile.
Also, under the right circumstances, it would appear I dance harder than ever before, in my entire life. I'm sure our dance circles and my embarrassingly intense videogame choreography will show up on Youtube in the next few days.

Stigmatrimony
6PM EST, today, will be American wedding time. I'll be out of reach until next Tuesday, the 8th.
The whole process has been by the skin of my teeth. I can't tell you how many corners I've cut to make this happen. I'm relying on the generosity of tens of family, friends, and friends of friends. We don't even have the money or time for a proper honeymoon, but none of that really matters. At the end of the day, I'm going to have a lot of awesome food, awesome live music, awesome friends, (including toulouse and bloodshot23!) and an awesome wife, and we're going to drink awesome shooters, listen to awesome music, and then just sit around and soak up each others awesomeness!
More Thanks to Commissioners
The reason I bother posting this on a furry art site is because, as you may know, you guys represent 99.9% of my commission work. It looks like my commissions here are transitioning out of sketches and moving into full illustrations, at prices where I can really push myself. I can't afford to offer low prices, so I really treasure when someone feels their money—ultimately their energy—is worth the imagery I produce. Without Fur Affinity, the furry fandom, and your characters, I would not be getting married. I'd be a far less experienced artist. I'd be a less-professional and cultured individual. Ultimately, I wouldn't be the person I am today. Thank you all for giving back to me, through your finances, or just a nice comment every now and then.
Why Furries
These commissions—especially the more involved ones—are celebrations of people, relationships, and life's struggles. They are designed to be an image unlike any other, a token of the marriage of our experiences, a your relic for you to enjoy the rest of your life. On a more spiritual level, each image represents a prayer for the client. When I deal with somebody else's work, I always pray that my art is a vehicle to touch them in some sincere way. Sometimes this comes in the form of self esteem, relaxation, or catharsis. Sometimes it's just a badass image that brings excitement. I don't always know what somebody needs, but I pray that truth makes itself evident in my imagery, and occasionally clients grace me with such parallel insights! This may be the only time I disclose that part in writing, but the spirituality and psychological ramifications of your characters is one of my favourite things to geek out about! Don't bring it up in a con or I'll talk about it until your ears bleed.
In closing, I take your character designs very personally. I believe that—especially when your character represents yourself—the importance of my loving that character as much as you do can't be understated. Even if you don't realize it, your characters say an awful lot about you, and giving that idea up to an artist's interpretation is a really intimate exchange. Thank you for giving me a glimpse into your lives. i continue to pray for your characters, that they may continue to teach you and others important life lessons long after they leave my canvas.

Super excited to meet more people on the best coast! Who's gonna be there?
Staying at:
San Jose Marriott
Arrival and Departure:
16th until whatever.
Mode of transportation:
Plane
Rooming with:
twilitdawnknown, knuxlight, and… t0ra!
Who will I likely see you with?
That's a good question! Whoever wants my company, I suppose.
Con Plans:
Art alleying, selling oil paintings in the art show/auction (!) friending it up with all y'all!
How can I find you?
Right. Good luck finding one dorky white guy in a sea of dorky white guys!
Do you do free art?
My sketches are really awful. Trust me, you do NOT want free art from me.
Do you have prints/Cds?
Yeah, I'll have cardstock prints. They're 3USD for weird colours, 10USD for actual prints.
Will you be fursuiting?
Nope.
Will you be going to parties?
I prefer getting to know people over getting to know people through screaming in public. We'll see.
Will you be performing?
My life is a lie.
Smoke?
Nah.
Drink?
In moderation
Gender?
I guess I can see why this question is here.
Can I hug you?
If you want to hug me, you probably have a good reason.
Can I talk to you?
DON'T BE SHY. I am never too busy to talk to you! One of my priorities is getting to know people better.
Will you be at any panels?
I'd like to. We'll see, I guess.
Can I touch you?
…
Can I buy you drinks?
Thanks for offering, meme! You are a swell meme.
How old are you?
Twenty-four, but with the virility of a twenty-five year-old
Can I snuggle with you?
…Does this question actually help anyone, ever? Will someone ever be in a snuggling op with me and go, "Oh yeah, Stigmata said in his FC meme I can snuggle with him. Good," before initiating a snuggle?
If you're pissed off, should I approach you?
I won't be pissed off.
Are you nice?
I'm very nice. But if you can't take my word for it, you could always ASK YOUR MOM
OOOOOOOOOOH
Single or Taken?
Super Taken: DX (GBC)
Cliquey?
I wouldn't know.
How tall?
6' 1"
Can I take pictures of you?
Yes, but I hate smiling for pictures.
Will you get anything commissioned?
I can't afford that!
How can I get your attention?
I know some people like screen names, but I really do enjoy real names. It signifies that our relationship goes beyond the internet, so feel free to refer to me as Stigmata or Jonathan. :3
Can I ask you to dance at the raves?
Meh.
We'll see.

Still Sick + Commission Queue Details

Hey, all.
In case you haven't noticed, it is with great disappointment that I reveal that my commissions aren't being as quick as I'd like. You remember how I lost my voice at MFF? I got way sicker after that, then got better, but before I had recovered fully I became even more sick all over again. I'm almost out of the throughs of illness now, thanks to the hospitality of the missus, but I still have a long way to go before I'm at 100 per-cent.
Sometimes my queue will show work out of order from top to bottom. Here's the reasoning behind that: Each commission shows what type of style I'm working on. The [STIGSKETCH] variety takes the least amount of time, so those are normally completed on a daily basis, to slowly empty them out. Other commissions have tighter deadlines or other parameters that may push them to the front, but if they're on this list, know that they will be completed!
Thank you all for your patience. I'm sorry I'm not physically equipped to churn these out faster right now. But I'm currently doing all I can. Talk to you soon!

Post-MFF Update / Commission Queue

My MFF weekend was great. I did a lot in Chicago outside of the con and had a blast making new friends (or meeting old online friends for the first time). I am so thankful for the people that stopped by my table. Many of them offered me words of encouragement, got me water when I was coughing a lung out, offered to buy me drinks, or even gifted me some art of Kelly! If I wasn't spending each evening having a blast with a college friend I could have easily invested hours into all the people at the con. Too many individuals to type here, but rest assured that I valued your time and am glad we got to spend a bit of time together. I don't know when my next con is, but I'm going to try my best to not be sick—then we can all snuggle by a fireplace without any inhibitions!
On the subject, are there any larger cons you think I should be attending? I'm planning on FWA and maybe FC.
The commission queue has been updated. Now you all know exactly how busy my next month is going to be. If sales keep up at this rate I can plan on con-hopping and selling. As is I'm barely making ends meet, but it beats the pants off of a crappy minimum wage job. I'm also aiming to sell oil paintings at future cons, so look out for those!

IlluXCon / Update
General | Posted 13 years agoCommission Queue • Ask Me Anything • Art/Life ProTips
Illuxcon:
This convention was a blast. I loved it two years ago, but this year beat the pants off of it in every imaginable way! So, SO good. Made many new friends, saw internet friends in real life, and got a follow-up portfolio review with everyone from two years ago. I now know exactly what my work looks like to the industry, and that's extremely helpful. Also, it looks like my time will be spent between Paizo and private commissions. I'm getting to that full-time freelancing thing people keep telling me about!
Clients:
Thanks for your patience, all. I was at a con and hadn't checked my email in the last four days. Right now I'm getting over a really crappy sickness, which has kept a pressure in my head whenever I look at a computer screen for too long. I'll do my best to get your sketch commissions done in a timely manner.
And a final thank you to anyone who has commissioned me or offered me support to any extent. I couldn't have gotten very far without you guys, and look forward to doing more sketches with you in the coming seasons. :)

MFF Meme!
General | Posted 13 years agoCommission Queue • Ask Me Anything • Art/Life ProTips
Hey, all! I'll be at MFF in a few weeks, and I'd love it if you could say hello and tell me about what you've been up to! I would be honoured to reconnect with some online friends in person. Do me the pleasure and look me up in the Artist Alley, if you have the time. :)
Where are you staying?
With a friend in Northwest Chicago
What day are you getting there?
Friday morning
How long are you going?
Sunday, early afternoon
Who will you be with?
A Photo-major friend from college. She's awesome!
How old are you?
24
How tall are you?
6'1"
What do you look like?
I'm the white one!
Are you taken?
I am married! See above picture! Isn't she cuuuute?
Can I touch you?
Sure, just don't try to be crazy.
Can I invite you out for food/fun/etc?
Good luck, if I'm tied to the Artist Alley!
Can I give you stuff?
Aww, but can't I give you something in return?
Are you friendly?
Yes. I am only an asshole to my friends, but in a friendly way.
Are you cliquey?
Am I? You'd need to ask someone else. I normally make it a priority to hang out with artists I admire and want to know better, so that could be a clique.
Can I stalk you?
You can't stalk someone that wants to spend time with you.
Can I buy you a drink?
You may.
Can I hug or snuggle you?
Hugs.
Do you do trades?
I'd prefer it if I knew you first, but there are exceptions. Let's hang out, first!
Where can I find you?
Artist's Alley, all day e'er day. Bringin' an iPad for some digital commissions!
Do you like parties?
They're okay. I prefer building relationships to yelling conversation over everyone else.
What should I not do around you?:
Please don't be intimidated by me. I was told at AC that it can happen, but I'd prefer you were comfortable around me instead.
If I see you, how should I get your attention?:
In a crowd, from most likely to least likely to get my attention:
-Jonathan
-Sandy
-Stigmata
I'm not against screen names, but I really value the use of a real name. It marks that our relationship extends beyond the internet. :3

EMERGENCY STIG SKETCH COMMISSIONS: 50% OFF!
General | Posted 13 years agoCommission Queue • Ask Me Anything • Art/Life ProTips
I have no idea what the demand will be for my sketches, since I never sell them, but here goes nothing!
I'll spare you the sob story. Just note that your consideration would be much appreciated. :)
[EDIT]You all are very considerate for asking. My job situation trickled down my hours until my income was slowly choked to death. Job hunting is not proving successful yet. I need money for loan payments, bills, rent, wedding things, and a ticket to an illustration convention with a portfolio review. I can't come across enough money, at this point, so I'm glad you folks have been commissioning me! Thank you ever so much![/EDIT]
[EDIT#2]Quit being so nice, everyone! I can't even handle it. GOSH.
[EDIT#3]You guys are so generous. I don't know how to thank all of you. Please bear with me as I handle my previous commissions and these sketches. I am now going to IlluXCon and getting two portfolio reviews because of you, and I'll never forget that.[/EDIT]
Your character looking cool, 40USD.
These'll be crazy, no standard for the style, but it'll be somewhere around these levels of detail:
Example 1
Example 2
Example 3
Email wahay4u (at) gmail (dotcom)
w/Subject: Sketch Commission
Send me some character refs including animal pics (if you have em)
If I can draw the character well, I'll confirm it, and we'll get you a super high-res image for poster-sized printing! Yaaaay!
If you think anyone would be interested in this sale, please send the info their way. Thanks!

4,000+ Watchers!
General | Posted 13 years agoCommission Queue • Ask Me Anything • Art/Life ProTips
Over 4,000 of you watch me. And while no single image of mine has 4,000 views on it, at one point all of these people thought, "Yeah, I guess Stigmata's stuff is okay. Why not watch him?" And that's pretty cool.
Thanks to all you peoples who watch, favourite, comment, and especially those that show my work to your friends. I don't know what the future has in store for me, but the ride there is a blast, and I love that I'm picking up life-long FA friends along the way!

So, no online Artist Alley Sign-ups? That's… weird…. At any rate, look for me there! I'll be selling commission slots, trading, maybe even doing some sketches or something. I really want to bring a huge mound of cardboard and oil pastels, or maybe cardstock and charcoal.
Will I see any of you fine people there?

Back from Furlaxation
General | Posted 13 years agoCommission Queue • Ask Me Anything • Art/Life ProTips
Greetings, all. I just finished my stay at Furlaxation. It lived up to its name—very small, intimate setting, and when people weren't blaring Gangnam Style it was on the quiet side. It was a bummer that no one seemed to be interested in commissions (due to the smaller convention size, most likely), but I nevertheless completed a ton of commission backlog and made new friends.
ScottishWolf gave me a metal jingly to cheer me up (and it worked!)
Ryoku7 purchased some prints and did a trade with me.
blindcoyote and others got to dick around with me in-between drawing stuff
Floppybelly wore a fez and created an adorable pipe-cleaner Kelly!
Hazy, Darkicewolf, Flyingfire, you're all lovely in your own ways. For the others I regularly spoke with, I apologize that I cannot recall your FA names. Sorry, guys. You were all very nice to me.
I'll leave you with a blog post that seems to express my most recent feelings. Although Furlaxation was far from a financial success, I made friendships, enjoyed myself, and have left differently than I arrived.
I will be prepared for Midwest Fur Fest, and I'm aiming to have some awesome stuff to sell. Be ready!
EDIT: I need to mention that the Furlaxation staff was very personal and accommodating. I'm sorry if I didn't seem grateful! I promise I was! <3

[FEEDBACK PLEASE] Potential Commission Ideas + Updates
General | Posted 13 years agoCommission Queue • Ask Me Anything • Art/Life ProTips
New Idea for Commissions:
-My weird, chunky digital painting style I have in the form of figurative animations. Like animated icons, but proper image size. Does that sound even remotely appealing?
-Tee shirt designs: Kelly (the kangaroo) and other furry fighters paired with haiku in fatigued text describing their respective fighting styles. Probably screen printed on nice tees, no more than 20USD.
Concerning your commissions:
Got my scanner, got my wireless internet, now all I'm lacking is a private space to shoot my references without everyone in my apartment complex thinking I'm a chauch for posing in my underwear! Illustration is often humiliating. I am in more personal debt after the dowry expenses, so the balance of furry to non-art jobs has been trickier than ever before. Thank you for your continued patience, love-ed clients!
Concerning my personal life:
That African dowry/wedding left a bad taste in my mouth, and I'm in teetering on being cynical and conclusive about those around me. In short, I'm making generalizations about Africans, White-Midwest Christian culture, et al
Concerning that videogame I'm AD-ing:
Had to fire someone. I tried to be supportive, but they weren't teachable or outgoing in any way. I'm glad that's behind me.
More and more investors are getting on board!
Future work is under an NDA (non-disclosure agreement) until further notice), but I'll still answer your questions on it if I can. Thanks for your support! Art direction is a daunting task, but I'm getting better at it each week.
We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.

Commission Queue, Moving to Cincinnati, Getting Married
General | Posted 13 years agoCommission Queue • Ask Me Anything • Art/Life ProTips
Concerning your commissions:
I'm packing up my life to move today. Will be payin' rent, loans, debts, and drawin' some furries. Still need to buy a printer/scanner. I will lack the means to reliably start my regular-income job and upload my commissions here until I have regular access to the internet at home. Please be patient with me during this transition, and feel free to check the updated commission queue linked at the top of this journal.
Concerning my personal life:
I'm feeling pretty under the weather. For the first time I'm moving away from all of my friends and living alone. My fiancée and her family are only a twenty minute drive away, but I'm trading that in to change every other relationship in my life to a long-distance one. In truth, all the cross-cultural navigating I've had to do in the marriage process has been difficult. It wasn't always enjoyable, fair, or easily, but my dowry is just about completed and I couldn't have done it without my friends on Fur Affinity or the new friends I made at Anthrocon. It's kind of screwed up to think I'm buying a woman with money I made drawing furries, but at least I can say I live an exciting life, and I cannot remember the last time I was bored, literally.
Concerning that videogame I'm AD-ing:
I was able to bring all the artists on the same page. In the meantime, I'm just waiting on all our potential investors to get back from vacation.

Deadlines + Ice Cream 7/27
General | Posted 13 years agoCommission Queue • Ask Me Anything • Art/Life ProTips
7/28 EDIT: I was a few hours late, but I made my deadline! In the wee hours I discovered, whether it was coincidence or more, that my body completely skips the sickness sensations of pulling all-nighters if I've had a couple of beers. I'll explore this later. I'm up now, I'm moving, and I earned the hell outta this ice cream!
The next seven days will be dedicated to my furry commissions. It'll feel good to churn these out again! <3 [/EDIT]
Because I made that deadline two weeks ago, ice cream for everyone! Sadly, I have an even bigger deadline coming up. It's a month after Anthrocon and my list is only half-way done. What a shame! I'm super excited to do your characters, too (I mean, I wouldn't have accepted them if I wasn't excited to do 'em, you know?)
Thanks for being patient with me. Even though I'm in the middle of the cross-cultural shitstorm that is my engagement, moving, and art-directing an MMO startup, I still look forward to working on your images with the love and attention they deserve!
We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.
