taste testing camping food. part one
Posted a year agoso I like camping gear, mainly because I've had to 'go camping against my will' a couple few too many times in my life. Involuntary Camping Sucks.
that being said there are a LOT of people on youtubes that do camping for fun and profit, and I watch a few of those people. some I like more than others.
one thing that doesn't get talked about as much as I would like is Camping Food. there's a LOT of ways to do camp food, from bring it from home and prepare everything from scratch, to Make it at home and just reheat it at camp.
Nothing wrong with either of those, provided you can cook.
Another option is pre-prepaired meals. my GoTo is Mountain House. used them for YEARS, if not a couple of decades. they set the gold standard as far as I am concerned when it comes to freeze dried camp meals. I have tried several other brands, arguson farms, wise brand, ready-up... and none of them measured up to my beloved Mountain House.
Until Now.
lemme preface this by saying COST is a Huge factor as to why I pick Mountain House 90% of the time. arguson and wise MIGHT be cheaper... but they are CHEAPER. the taste adn quality are Just Not There to compete with MH.
Enter In Peak Refuel.
They Cost More. portions are slightly larger, the quality is there... but the COST...
ok, Side by side I prepared Sausage Gray breakfasts by MH and PR.
I preferred MH, my brother chose PR. but it was a slim margin. had the biscuits re-hydrated better for the PR, I'd have sided with them.
Next we did Beef Stroganoff.
the directions on the PR called for 2/3rds cup water and that turned everything into a PASTE. I had to double the water to get any kinda Sauce. Other than that, I have to give this one to Peak. you can TASTE the sour cream in their sauce. the meat is bigger and meatier.
of course combining them was I think the idea solution... and my brother agreed.
so, COST. MH is around ten bucks a package for two servings, Peak has been between thirteen and sixteen for two servings. peak has been 25-50% more stuff in the package, however you still only get about two cups of food from either PR or MH per package.
TASTE. I've Never complained about Mountain House, as I stated they are my Go To Brand. however Peak has won two rounds so far, if only on points for the first one.
Over All. if cost isn't an issue, PR is great. if cost is a factor, Mountain House all day every day.
now, MH Isn't the cheapest thing out there, a can of Campbell's chunky is still $2-4 each, which is WAY better than $10, but then you have to carry it. freeze dried is lighter. it's all in the trade-offs

Posted 2 years agorylan broke up with me over two and a half years ago, right after borrowing my guitar, and only a couple days after valentines. twice they created new accounts and messaged me, but then deleted those accounts before reading any of my replies.
I Finally got tired of waiting and I bought myself a replacement guitar for the one he stole. which was also the guitar that got stolen from me and I had to buy it back from the pawn shop... so twice stolen guitar now.
And not 6 hours after I hit the buy it now... the fucker messaged me again wanting to 'talk'.
no, no talking. you fucking blocked me repeatedly, lied to me for Four Years, went out of your way to hurt me in every way possible... I'm past done.
Oh, and he claims he's "afraid of me". I couldn't hurt hum when he BEGGED me to hurt him, why the fuck would I Bother now?
Strait up, I said I'm not his enemy, but I am no longer his friend. if we bump into each other I will be polite, say hello, and walk the fuck away.

he was openly advocating gun control, dismissed every argument I put forth against gun control, then called me a liar over my having been raped at age 8 by a jerk that is now a CT state patrol officer, AND called me a liar about having been robbed 9 times at gunpoint while company policy REQUIRED me to be a disarmed Victim. (4 times in CT, 5 times in Knoxville. all while delivering pizza back in mid 90's)
48 years old an crying because I lost my best friend because he was a mindless idiot.
I don;t have any more IRL friends left. just online friends most of whom I've never met

flint and steel (I generally get two, one in backpack, one in belt pouch)

small metal mirror
10 pitons (climbing gear)
rope, 50ft. silk preferred, but hemp is cheaper. 10gp silk 1gp hemp.

he causally mentions he thought his foster father was his 'real dad' and that when that fuckhead (the foster father) did bad things to my son, he told the state that his 'dad was doing bed stuff' like touching him places that he shouldn't
the people at DFACS thought that he meant ME, and that's why they went out of their way Several Times to make sure I could never get my son back.
the kids were taken away from me 18 and a half YEARS ago...
we were about to get him back when DFACS misunderstood a five year old, and tried to prosecute me as a child molester.
and because a FIVE YEAR OLD thought the foster father was his 'real dad' he couldn't explain to them that they were after the wrong guy.
I didn't do anything wrong.
I've been beating myself up for almost 19 years for failing my kids, and not being good enough, and on and on and on...

several people scattered from the spot on the sidewalk that NightingGale was decending towards, they barely made enough room for her as she touched down, red cross cape flowing out behind her as her boots touched down. Her eyes scanned, and locked onto the First Responder and she marched towards him, pedestrians parting before her. The First Responder looked over his should and knodded
“this one is 10-7, good to see you again.”
“Likewise, now stand back” she replied as she stepped forward to kneel beside the body. FR backed off and stood, moving to the other victim knowing they were in good hands.
Even as NG knelt her hands began to glow sickly green, slightly neon baby power puke green. As she touched the old man he gasped in breath and his eyes flew open. The tear in his skull knit back together in a second as the magor tramuas instantly repaired themselves... and the cancer he'd only today found out about was simply dissolved.
Forced resurrection is hard on a body, the old man would still need to goto the hospital, but he'd do so alive and in perfect health.
NG, panted for a moment and looked into the old man's two good eyes. He looked up and said “You...” she smiled and said simply “Yes.” then she stood and moved to his wife. FR looked to his kit and pulled conventional bandages as NG stepped up beside him again “condition?”
“she'll be critical, but I think I can stabilize her before the almbulance arrives. Contusions, lacerations, I think there is internal bleeding here” he said as he placed a finger on the old ladies midsection opposite the laceration to her side he was applying the bandage to. NG reached forward and touched a finger to the spot, concentrating for only a moment “Yeah, she's pretty beat up. Want me to help?”
FR looked over his shoulder “do you ave enough mojio after...” he jerked his chin to the old man that was trying to stand up so he could get closer to his wife
“I can take the edge off, and stop some of the bleeding. That won't tax me too much.” FR pulled his handsback even as NG's hand glowed for a moment and faded. The pitiful moans and whimpers tapered off slightly and the old lady was able to look up and said “You?”
“I've been getting that a lot tonight.” NG said with a smile and then rose strait up into the air into the night, cape fluttering behind her as she dissapeared into the darkness above the streetlights.

I've been watching a LOT of cooking stuff on youtubs of late, and a few have spawned some good ideas, and others not so much. one thing I keep seeing is people pushing "SPG"
usually it's "see our website to buy" but when you go there it's $20 for 4oz.
I'm a BROKE ASS MOTHER Fornicator and I ain't paying $18 for 4oz unless it's for booze.
so lemme educate you here for a minute
SPG = Salt, Peppers, Garlic
equal mix of salt (usually tablesalt, but you can use kosher), ground Black Pepper, White Pepper, and Granulated Garlic.
that's it in it's simplest form. you can add Paprika (or smoked paprika, some people like it that way)
others call for chili powder, cayenne pepper powder, and red pepper flacks... but you can get ALL of that and make several POUNDS of "spg" for $20.
had a long talk with my brother the other day, after a Big Meal I made that used liberal amounts of "spg" in the fried potatoes and bacon wrapped pork filets and he thought it was PERFECT on the potatoes but that in his opinion *DISCLAIMER* that he prefered to add each spice seperately because his lame-ass bland as f*ck taste buds didn't need that much flavor (my words of what he said in a nutshell)
so. I like SPG and I've been trying minor variations to it. If this mix works as well as I think it will I'll post it here.

that's it in it's simplest form. you can add Paprika (or smoked paprika, some people like it that way)
others call for chili powder, cayenne pepper powder, and red pepper flacks... but you can get ALL of that and make several POUNDS of "spg" for $20.
had a long talk with my brother the other day, after a Big Meal I made that used liberal amounts of "spg" in the fried potatoes and bacon wrapped pork filets and he thought it was PERFECT on the potatoes but that in his opinion *DISCLAIMER* that he prefered to add each spice seperately because his lame-ass bland as f*ck taste buds didn't need that much flavor (my words of what he said in a nutshell)
so. I like SPG and I've been trying minor variations to it. If this mix works as well as I think it will I'll post it here.
but fornow I have to get pants on and head back to the tire shop in Tomah and sweat my ass off all day to pay the bills
