Comment on Code of Conduct Update:
General | Posted 8 years agoSeeing as I am blocked(?) from replying on Fender's journal, I'll post it here.
"This is a reversal from previously stated policy, as expressed in administrative action and responses to appeals.
Will this be retroactive and removing strikes against people for things like "Nazis are deranged"?"
Lets do a test, shall we.
Nazis are mentally deranged. They're Nazis. They fly the flag, they do the salute, the espouse the philosophy; a rhetoric of exclusion, intolerance, hatred, and genocide.
"But what about people who just pretend or are trolling, but don't mean it?"
I'm reminded of the comic where a guy, once being told to fuck off for saying something stupid, says "Jokes on him, I was only pretending."
So either they're actual Nazis, or just acting like them and pretending to hold those opinions in an attempt to get a rise out of people. There's no functional difference at that point, because both those who legitimately hold those values and those who only pretend to are both still acting and speaking upon those values.

Upon thinking about it:
General | Posted 8 years agoUpon thinking about it, I won't be removing my stuff from FA.
I'll just cease posting, favoriting, and commenting. Easier to come back from if circumstances change.

Back but not for long

Nazifurs GTFO Part 2
General | Posted 8 years agoWhat a lovely bunch of posts. Certainly saw some snowflakes get all up in anger about calling out Nazifurs.
I saw a lot of "Whataboutism" trying to deflect from the issue, I saw some people trying to bring up "Marxist ideology" as a validation while trying to deflect with old lies about Confederate memorials. Also a lot of people tying anyone who is anti-fascist or part of Antifa to Communism - say whut? Antifa is all about opposing Fascism.
Apparently opposing Fascism is too much for some people. They want to say "Both sides are bad", and when that fails - well, I had one person lie in a journal about went down, including calling me out by name.
In response to confirming that I, a Jewishman, should be more tolerant of Nazis: "You support a thing worse than nazism, or something just as worse if you're a commie, they are both murderous gangs that hate freedom, but just soo you know, if comes to that battle, the commies -will- lose."
Notice here the false dilemma - this person assumed I'm a communist, and seems to believe that only communists would oppose fascism and nazisim. That certainly would be news to John McCain or Mitt Romney!
This person later said: "The facists couldn't care less if you're gay or not, they hate the agenda you have likely aligned yourself with because it has been coopted by communists and BLM. The gay agenda that has made it ok to teach kids in school how to sodomize themselves with bananas and shit, and how to have sex f/f, the gay agenda that whines that their videos about how to perform gay sex got age restricted so that anyone under 5 years old can't see them. Hell you have to be pretty gay to be a facist in the first place, or a MGTOW."
Wat.
Y'see folks, it is this simple: If your philosophy require the death or expulsion of a person from their home, based upon their race, gender, orientation, or religion - you don't get a seat of the table, or a welcome. Tolerance does not get extended to intolerance, the ideals of acceptance are mutually exclusive with those of hatred and divisiveness.
So please, keep telling the Jewish man that he should welcome and tolerate those who want him dead.
Please keep telling these Jews that the First Amendment covers threats and intimidation.
Please keep telling me that it's just "Communists" and "Liberals" that think Nazis and White Supremecists are un-American, that both sides are the same.
I mean, how hard is it to say: "Nazis don't belong in polite company" or something similar, without trying to fall back into whatboutism? How hard is it to not go "Well, your side is just as bad!"? How hard is it to not go "Well its just a different opinion" when their opinion is that I should be dead?
For far too many people, it seems pretty hard indeed.

Nazis and Nazifurs: Get the fuck out.
General | Posted 8 years ago
tempo321 said it wonderfully on his journal ( http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/8367586/ ).I know that Furry has been tolerant of viewpoints and differing philosophies, but those who support - or pretend to support - Nazisim need to be made unwelcome. They are doing damage to us as a fandom out of some perverse need to make an impact, even to the point of being negative.
This shit shouldn't be tolerated. Tolerance is, after all, a peace treaty - not a moral precept. I'm not obligated to tolerate the intolerant, because they are not tolerant of me. They do not abide by the rules, thus the rules don't apply to them.
If you support Nazisim or White Nationalism or anything related to those failed harmful cancerous ethos - get the fuck out of my fandom. You're not welcome.
Now let's see what snowflakes get triggered by this.
Furry Archive Library, August 11th Updates
General | Posted 8 years agoAnother few weeks, another few headaches!
I'm changing my workflow a bit. I'm going to first get everything photographed and have images uploaded - THEN start listing the information for each item. Previously I posted a comic or zine's info and then took a picture and uploaded it. Not having to mess with the camera each time will speed it up.
I currently have 786 images up on my Google Drive. Assuming only a handful are repeats, that means two-thirds of the archive already have images digitally. Of course that means another 406 (at least) to go!
So, what got images this time?
Furthest North Crew
Furrlough (Only 116 of 197 images for them)
Huzzah!
North American Furs (I need to give them a category!)
Rowrbrazzle (Missing issue 100 images still)
Yarf (Some AC purchases missing images)
Tales of the Tai-Pann Universe
I've got a lot more images in my Drive than I've up on Librarika, and I'll be getting those transfered over the next week or so, then on my next day off, another marathon run of taking photos of comic covers.
As usual, any tips, advice, suggestions, or comments are very much welcomed!

Why I'm Archiving
General | Posted 8 years agoTonight while updating some items in the Furry Archive Library, I ran into a big reason why I'm doing this.
His name is Mark Shaw, and I bet most of you haven't heard of him before. No, don't look him up on Wikifur, he doesn't have a page and has a sole mention as a contributor to the 4th and final issue of The American Journal of Anthropomorphics. His comic, "Walter Kitty", likewise does not have an article, with "The Hollow Earth" listed solely on the article for Vision Entertainment Group, the publisher of three issues.
There's a clue - a post to alt.fan.furry backed up by Google, where Mark Shaw announces that Walter Kitty moved to a (now defunct) website and that the Hollow Earth story is complete. It also mentions that he and his (presumed) wife worked for Egmont and was working on an ebook called "The Devil In Texas", which I'm not finding any information on.
But that's literally it. That's all I've been able to find. I'm certain there's people out there who know more about Mark Shaw's work, and the Walter Kitty comic. Eric Schwartz apparently did the covers for The Hollow Earth (I have already emailed him to confirm and am waiting a reply back), and Ed Zolna has one issue of Walter Kitty for sale in his shop. I'm certain if I dug more, I could find more leads and more information.
I don't recall hearing of Mark Shaw before tonight. I'm certain before reading this journal, most of you haven't heard of him either. Mr. Shaw's work is quite possibly mostly lost to us as a fandom. Comics sitting in boxes or on hard drives, stored in a closet isn't really saved or available to us. Tonight was just another reminder of how much the Furry Fandom has lost and how much is at risk of being lost.
That's why I'm archiving. That's why I'm spending my time typing up info on comics, uploading the covers, researching information for entries, and going to cons to talk them.
So that we don't lose or forget about what we have done.
If anyone has any information on Mark Shaw, please. Let me know.

Furry Archive Library, July 25th Updates
General | Posted 8 years agoJust added in my AC purchases - 461 titles - to my Furry Library Archive. That's going to be too many to list!
The vast majority don't have cover scans or other information for them yet. I just got fed up waiting on slowly filling out the spreadsheet.
This brings my library to 1192 unique items (Not counting duplicates). That's quite a lot, and I've been trying to think of better ways to organize these things. I also need to decide what counts as "Adult" and what is "General Audience". Can't have any innocent virgin eyes gaze upon furry smut older than they are, after all!
Beyond that, there's two things I want to note:
1) If you make an account for the Furry Library Archive, you can write a reviews! If you own and have read an item, I'd love to see your review of it. That's currently the only perk of membership - I want to eventually have titles available to be loaned out, but I need to investigate how to best do that.
2) I am considering a Data Entry Party for sometime in August, in the Northern Virginia area. Basically, I'm going to bribe people with pizza, drinks, and snacks to help do data entry for the Library - typing up the publish date, publisher, the editor, page numbers, authors, artists, and if they're an anthology comic what stories they have. Just checking if there would be local interest for such a thing; I'd also need to secure a venue for it.
But yeah, still working on this project.

FAU 2017 Panels!
General | Posted 8 years agoI'm doing some panels at FAU and I've got their timeslots :D
10AM Saturday: Worldbuilding as Games. I'll be talking about some various games and gamestyles that allow some decent worldbuilding
10PM Saturday: Certified Bad Advice. I'll be dishing out some hopefully comedic bad advice in an improv-standup style.
10AM Sunday: Comics and Zines of the 20th Century. I'll be bringing my collection and doing a (shorter!) talk!
This'll be fun :D

AC2017 Wrap-up
General | Posted 8 years agoMan, Anthrocon was fun. I also probably spent more than I reasonably should have, but it was fun!
I had at least two dozen people for my panel, there seemed to be a lot of interest in the topic, I ended up obtaining a lot more things for the collection - 421 items, if my count was correct - and met a lot of people in person for the first time or the first time in a long time.
I did hit fewer panels than I intended - in fact, I think I only got to two aside my own, the How To Start A Convention, and the Mustelid Meet. The former wasn't as useful as I thought it would be, and the latter was dominated by otters - out of 38 people, 20 were otters. I've also been invited to help co-host the Mustelid Meet next AC xD
Mmm, am I forgetting anything...
Oh! I also got engaged to
schmozy, and in seeing people's reactions to that, I'm reminded of the old saying: "A sorrow shared is sorrow decreased; a joy shared is joy increased." Some people were more excited than Schmozy and I were, I think!
I'll be getting to properly catalog all the items I bought, but for now, here's a list of most of 'em:

Oh! I also got engaged to
schmozy, and in seeing people's reactions to that, I'm reminded of the old saying: "A sorrow shared is sorrow decreased; a joy shared is joy increased." Some people were more excited than Schmozy and I were, I think!I'll be getting to properly catalog all the items I bought, but for now, here's a list of most of 'em:

500 word story commissions? Really?
General | Posted 8 years agoIs this a thing?
People pay for 500 word story commissions?
I am NOT knocking people who do that. I'm not going "Get a load of these guys, wasting their money." I don't do that. Commission what you want, it's your money, just do it with what's left after paying bills, rent, food, etc.
No, my reaction stems from something else:
"Wait, people really pay for that? ...would they pay me?"
Of course, I write very niche stuff. Very niche stuff indeed. So it's a tiny pool from an already small sample.
But still. Huh. Makes me think. Goodness knows I can write those fairly quickly...
Greedy otter is greedy. And wants more comics.

Anthrocon, Ho! [MEME]
General | Posted 8 years agoAs I've said (ad naseum), I'm hitting AC this year! So here's the AC Meme, Summercat Edition
Where are you staying?
At the Westin.
What day are you getting there?
Thursday, probably the afternoon.
How are you traveling?
By car; driving from Manassas, VA
Who will you be rooming with?
schmozy, and two others whose FAs I forget
How is the best way to find you?
Probably poking me via Telegram!
Are there any panels you might be attending?
Quite a few, including my Comics Panel at 1:30pm on Friday!
What do you look like?
White dude with glasses, dark brown hair, and a beard. Not too helpful!
Will you be suiting?
I do not own a suit.
Do you do free art?
I do stickfigures! If I've my laptop I can do some other things, too.
Do you do trades?
I do stickfigures! I can also do quick and silly generators like http://www.dawnofworlds.com/game/randomchar , or very VERY short stories.
What is your gender?
Male
How tall are you?
5'10"...ish.
Can I talk to you?
Sure! I'm terrible with small talk, but have a topic or something and I'll be good to chat :3
Can I touch you?
Nope!
Can I buy you drinks?
Sure - no caffeine or energy drinks due to medication. If you mean booze, then crisp ciders work.
Can I give you stuff?
Depends on the stuff! If it's comics and magazines for the collection, yes! If it's anything else, probably not so much.
Can I hug or snuggle with you?
Please ask. I can be a huggy type, but sometimes I'm not in the mood and it doesn't show. Also I don't like surprise hugs.
Are you nice?
It's a very complicated yes.
Will you be going to parties?
Probably not. I prefer more sedate environments than most Furs seem to enjoy, party-wise.
If I see you, how should I get your attention?
Say "Hey Summercat". Repeat as needed. If I turn and start looking in your direction, wave your hand or something. Please do not touch me to get my attention.
Can I come with you for food/fun/etc?
For the most part, sure, but please ask. The answer will usually be "Yes", but I might some time alone with Schmozy or something.
Can I look in your sketchbook?
Sure! It's mainly all commissions or requests with some of my (crappy) art in it.
Can I draw in your sketchbook?
Yes! My sketchbook has three rules: 1) Draw Something. 2) Sign it so I can attribute it to you. 3) I get to post it to FA or similar sites as long as I attribute (or make best effort to).
Can I take your picture?
Sure! I'm not particularly photogenic though!
Do you do commissions?
You want to pay me for the stuff I do, sure! I do stickfigures, stickfigure comics, rough draft TF stories, impromptu Certified Bad Advice, and all sorts of random generators. In short, nothing people would want to pay me for!
What's your goal(s) for the con this year?
Meet new people, run a great panel, buy more stuff for the collection, maybe learn a few things, and try to figure out this "fun" thing people talk about.

Comic Raffle at my AC'17 Panel!
General | Posted 8 years agoI'm doing a panel at Anthrocon! "What We Had Before: Furry Comics and Zines of the 20th Century" will be running on Friday, from 1:30pm to 3:00pm, in the Westin's Cambria room. I will have with me almost 700 items from my collection of Furry comics and magazines, with some items published as early as 1983!
My panel runs from 1:30pm to 3pm, and I will give a brief overview of some selected titles, and the entire collection will be available for people to look through (You will need an Adult Badge to view the Adult Only titles).
In a shameless attempt to draw more attention and attendance to my panel, I will be raffling off some of my duplicates!
Just sign up on Sched for my panel by June 28th, 11:59PM Eastern Time, and be at the panel when I do the drawing, which will be after my talk.
People whose names are drawn will receive one comic from my collection of duplicates. The number of names drawn will depend on how many show up, up to how many duplicates I actually have available.
I hope to see you there!
Direct sched link: https://anthrocon2017.sched.com/event/AsLm/
Direct collection link: https://furryarchive.librarika.com/
Note: The full collection is at 738 unique items, but due to the volume of the volumes, I will be leaving behind more recent items and nearly all the Furry RPGs.

With these comics, this brings my total Furrlough collection to 188 issues, of 196 total (Regular run of 193, plus 3 specials). Now that I physically have these comics, I now am officially only missing issues 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, 31, 47.
(If anyone has and is willing to donate these, I'll gladly take them!)
At this point, https://furryarchive.librarika.com contains 738 unique items. Not the biggest Furry collection, but I like to think that as a private collection (as opposed to a store inventory), it's pretty substantial in its own right!
Interested in seeing these? You're in luck! I'll be bringing nearly the entire collection - less some miscellaneous items - to both Anthrocon and Furaffinity United, doing a panel on these older comics and zines.

Anthrocon Panel and 5/28 Archive Update
General | Posted 8 years agoI'm doing another panel, at Anthrocon!
I'll be in the WESTIN Cambria on Friday, from 1:30 to 3:00pm, and I'll have the bulk of my collection (IE, stuff listed on https://furrarchive.librarika.com ) available for viewing. I may leave the RPGs and some of the new items at home.
I'll be doing another inventory soon to see how many extra copies I have of various items, and will raffle some off at my panel.
Here's the Sched Entry: https://anthrocon2017.sched.com/eve.....fb136c6b3289ba
I somehow actually managed to get everything I brought with me done today. I was not expecting that. Todays updates are items from a Rabbit Valley Blindbox I purchased for this month. Amusingly, most were repeats of items I already had. Ah well, more I can give away at events! 27 updates items, with pictures and some info.

Furry Archive Library
General | Posted 8 years agohttps://furryarchive.librarika.com/
I got tired of my spreadsheet, and I've been wanting to post my stuff up like this for a long while, so here it is.
355 items uploaded already, some Furrlough have cover images. About 310 more to go that I've already got here, plus another 80 comics I'm expecting soon.
Still learning the software here, but aside from a few kinks, seems to be working well enough!

Like Christmas
General | Posted 8 years agoExcept I'm Jewish so it's not really Christmas but damnit I've seen enough Coke commercials to get the idea.
My stuff from Second-Ed came in today - and what I read only leaves me with more questions, more leads.
And it feels glorious.
Also daunting as fuck. This stuff costs money, and there's a lot of it and not a lot of money. But I don't think there's any interest in a Patreon or the likewhere I do writeups about ancient comics and zines. Half my purpose in doing this is showing that this stuff is out there and is of interest. There's not really a huge demand for it.
That said, it's interesting to see these as a glimpse into the past.
The box I took with me to work contains mainly newer Furrlough, but also 2-9 of Havoc Inc, Critters #2, Morphs 1,2, and 4 (Another anthology comic from 1987). It also includes some other zines, and both parts of Issue 100 of Rowrbrazzle. Sadly, I didn't have the time to read through some of these at work like I thought - I'm not going to repeat that again!
But at some point I need to do a proper writeup on these. I was just reading about another Furry fanzine - one that was dedicated just to reviews, articles, and commentary - and the Wikifur page doesn't have full information on them. I sent a note to someone involved with that zine (Furtherance) to see if he happened to know where I could track down the copies.
Ah well. AH WELL!
Let's see what happens, shall we?

Furthemore | and new Collection Items!
General | Posted 8 years agoI just realized I never did a con report for Furthemore. Hah!
I had a great time, and wish that things had worked out so I could stay overnight - but that doesn't really reduce my enjoyment.
I"ve said this ad-nauseum before, but I'll say it again: Furthemore is the first convention I've been to since Califur 2006 where I did not A) Volunteer, B) Staff, C) Be a dealer/man a table, or D) Some combination of the first three. I had no clue what to do, so went with the flow.
That seemed to work!
Friday I attended a lot of panels, mainly writing. I also did my panel (Furry Comics and Zines History) at 2pm, where I had a decently sized audience - about 16-18 people if I recall the count correctly. Was nervous going in - I've never done a panel before, and never heard or seen a panel like this done - but followed some advice I was given, and just focused on knocking down talking about the comics and zines, and answered some questions. I got a nice round of applause when we finished up, then let people browse what I had there. If you attended - PLEASE give me feedback! I'll be doing this again at Anthrocon and FAU.
Did some more panels, hung out a bit, talked to folks, then went home.
Saturday was more of the same - I attended
comus's panel in the morning, talking about his upcoming book on Furry History. I forget what I did between then and 4pm to be honest - but from 4 to 8 I set up my collection again to let some people browse it; had some people come by. Once that was done, wrapped up, and packed away, I did the Chimera Challenge, ending up with a group of very skilled and talented people. We ended up making Sticky Stickems, a Wolf/Spider Hybrid. I helped with the head, and had design input (!) on adding in some features.
Sunday, Schmozy and I parked at the train station nearby and took the metro one stop. Was easier than trying to park! We didn't stay too log, leaving at around 4pm. I went to the judging of the Chimera Challenge (Sticky won!), I think I maybe did a panel? Then went to Gaming to play High Frontier with some friends.
Then I went home.
All in all, I had a fun con. I've got some criticisms, but nothing super major. I only ended up buying a few things (The Suburban Jungle Book One, by Gneech, three books from AnthroAquatic's table, and a "Hi I'm A" badge to be done after the con.
I might get myself dragged into doing more events next year. Oy vay.
Just placed an order from Second-Ed Books. 49 new items for collection.
Did I say new? I meant old. As in, most from before 2000 old.

Tax return spending, yeah!
Between this purchase of Furrlough, and the Texas Furry Fiesta issues that me and my friend are figuring out how to best get to me, I now only have 8 issues of Furrlough I am missing: 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, 13, 31, 47. That's about 96% of the total run of Furrlough; a pretty hefty collection.
In addition to the issues of Furrlough, I picked up everything the store had for Havok, Inc - issues 2 through 9. Which is as far as I can tell, everything but the first issue. Havok Inc was done by
terriesmith.
I had some money left in the budget I set for myself (well, the max I set, and I'd already blown past the goal), so I picked up a bunch of other items that looked relevant to the collection.
Dallas Brawl Update was a zine that was a spinoff/offshoot of another one due to a large waitlist, that then took a life of it's own. I was reading up on it recently and saw some issues for sale, so picked one up.
Critters is an early (1986!) anthology comic/zine. I actually own a copy of it already (#42), but didn't want to pass on grabbing #2 as an example of the early works. Critters is also the reason why Furrlough went to 51 issues under Antarctic Press - Ben Dunn wanted to show them up. I think now that I've mined out the easy sources of Furrlough ( two of the remaining issues will cost me $100 each), I'll start grabbing Critters.
Morphs is new to me, but the comics were cheap and that's all they had, so I snagged it.
South Fur Lands is an APA from Australia(!) that ended in 2011. Definately wanted an example of a non-American APA, and Furthest North Crew doesn't quite count. Sorry, Canada!
Never heard of Wildlife APAzine, but am curious to know more, so got a copy.
I picked up Rowrbrazzle #100 out of selfishness. I was rightfully dropped from the membership due to lack of activity after #99, and wanted this milestone.
That's enough spending on these for me - well, okay. I'm buying a Blind Box from Rabbit Valley. BUT NO MORE! xD
I helped with the head, and had design input (!) on adding in some features.Sunday, Schmozy and I parked at the train station nearby and took the metro one stop.
