A brief look back / Rant
Posted 8 years agotl;dr: I had some okay fun at Anime Boston. First time in suit in half a year and reasons why.
It's been almost a year since the last journal I posted (10 months?) and probably about as long on even putting up any photos. There's a reason for that to be honest. Over the last year I have just been fed up with the constant crap. Life has found ways to screw me over or at least heavily defer my plans. My involvement with projects has been cut down so substantially by work, family and other things going awry that I'm amazed I have anything at times. Took a promotion last year in august which put me in the highest possible position at work. I'm now the Quality Manager for a whole company. My usual work load is doubled to some extent as I'm supposed to be training new employees to help handle my old jobs and at the same time I'm supposed to somehow manage my way through AS9100 audits, supplier and customer reports and oversee that everyone is doing their work properly and jobs are done right.
If you don't know what I do for a living, I work in aerospace, specifically overhaul and repair. Maintaining and upgrading aircraft engines, tank engines, atomic power plant, turbine power plant and naval vessel components. The parts we work on are from across the US and other countries. Lifestar, Fire Rescue, Dakota/California firefighting helicopters, that 747 you sat in, the plant that produces the electricity you use, the tanks and our troops use overseas, supply and support copters and craft for the military among many other things.
Anyway... life has been pissing me off and eating away at my time. This past weekend I went to Anime Boston on the encouragement of some friends. Wouldn't have gone otherwise given my current attitude towards things as of late, and my immense discontent to dealing with people lately. It was actually somewhat enjoyable. Though I ended up mostly wandering around on my own. Spent a couple hours in suit on saturday for the first time in about half a year now. Friends had wandered off to do their own thing, so I just hung out with my younger brother. He's fine with the furry and fursuit thing, so he was my handler for the time I was in suit. Made it a lot easier that I could just use hand signals to convey if I wanted to stop or get out of there if someone or something wasn't feeling quite right. This and only one other time has he ever been my handler. I usually rely on my friends to do that, but as of late I've stopped suiting because I don't have anyone that wants to help with it, or too many just don't care enough or pay attention to realize that the suiter is having issues or needs to be rescued from a situation they can't navigate so well in suit.
An example of some obvious carelessness in regards to your suiter if you are a handler, is neglecting the fact your suiter is nearsighted, and therefore has issues identify distance without their glasses or contacts. Neglecting to make sure they find the first step on a flight of stairs, or after a landing. Not making sure they're still somewhere near or to your side while trying to traverse crowded areas. Things that have happened to me as of late, and it's become to much of a risk or trouble to bother suiting when you have no one to rely on...
All things aside, I had a nice weekend at AB. Even if I was left on my own for quite a while. I've lost a few friends over the last year, and it's been keeping me out of suit more often because it's hard to find someone to trust when you realize just how vulnerable you are in a fursuit. Situations are harder to deal with (grabby children, people who have no idea when you really just want to walk away, you're trying not to keel over from heat exhaustion and no one will just let you get moving again, stairways...). Being an introvert doesn't necessarily help with this issue. either.
Whatever, I'm done ranting.

Going Dormant
Posted 9 years agoThis account is likely going to be inactive soon. I'm getting tired of things, and the few times I come back here to find the place is down or the server's have been "attacked and wiped" is getting annoying.
Probably post a few photos here and there, but don't expect too much. If you need me, you likely already know how to get in touch. If you don't have the info, just check google or ask.
That's all for now.

Space... Pew pew...
Posted 10 years agoI spend so much time doing nothing these days. Yea... sure, we can say that time spent writing is productive, but when I never publish it anymore. Hell, I've spent hours working on ships in Space Engineers and never post them, or they don't end up working out and I just waste the next couple hours shooting at them and crashing stuff into it for no good reason.
There were days I'd sit around and do nothing but read for hours, or go play on WoW and pvp with my friends. These days, I don't even seem to do that anymore. Sure I read a book here or there on my cellphone when I find something on the kindle store, but that's rare now. Really not sure if it's just the lack of good books and stories or if I'm just losing interest.
I like scifi... I like space... I like the idea of just cruising around in a big tin can occasionally.
Saw Star Wars sunday. Was good, not what I expected, or wanted necessarily, but it was good.

Thinking...
Posted 10 years agoBeen wondering why I bother going out lately. My knee isn't going to be getting better anytime soon like this. Seems to start out feeling fine in the morning, but by late afternoon it begins to hurt again. If it's not better by this weekend, I may need to stop going to meets and stuff for a few weeks till it heals.
Other than that, I've been mulling over a few things. Thinking about old friends, and the ones I haven't spoken too in a long time. There's a few that are gone now, and it'll have been a couple years since that happened. Mortality sucks doesn't it?
Anyways, I need a few volunteers for my panel Sunday at 4:30pm Nov. 1st. It's "Being a good social potato", and pretty much covers the basics of social interaction, stereotypes and knowing where the lines are, both in and out of the fandom.
If you wish to sacrifice... I mean volunteer yourself, give me a pm. Can meet Friday afternoon of furpoc, Saturday afternoon (laterish) of furpoc, or any time Sunday before panel. Just a 10 minute prep before actually doing the panel.

Winter weather/Cold and safety around some suiters
Posted 10 years agoOkay, I need to ask folks a favor with the up coming cold weather now, my knees start to bother me more and become more painful.
If I get in suit at all this winter, please do be careful. Obviously I'll have slightly more impaired vision compared to me out of suit, but I also have a cold sensitive injury that will act up. It reduce the stability and regular use of one of my knees slightly. I don't mind hugs and glomps and all that, but I need to ask that during the winter months, please keep it to line of sight, or give me a tap on the shoulder first. When it's acting uo, I have limited mobility and my knee cannot handle much additional weight. So more for your safety than mine, just be careful please. I can take getting bumped around and falling over, but you don't need me falling on top of you.
Some info on the issue. It occurs in both of my knees, but one is far more sensitive than the other. Again... sorry, but just for safety, please be careful.

Furpocalypse & Life
Posted 10 years agoI always start these with "So..." or some variant of the sort. Today I'm going to obviously not do that.
Going to be at Furpocalypse this year Friday afternoon and Saturday afternoon, then all day sunday. Family obligations have me pretty well tied up that weekend.
Sunday at Furpocalypse, I'm running a panel called "Being a good social potato" at 4:30pm. It's mostly a how to be social and dealing with anxiety and stereotyping at events and in fandoms.
Other than that, I've been working on cars the past month or two. Between my transmission blowing in the hyundai, and everyone else just having general mechanical failures, it's been busy. I still have 2 engines to look at (1.8 slow and a 1.6) before I'm even close to done.
Anyways... I look forward to seeing folks come the con, so have fun and stay safe!

Some actual work being done to this profile
Posted 10 years agoFinally getting off my ass and doing the long overdue revamp/overhaul to this profile. The other one will get done eventually, but this one was in more drastic need of it since it's about the most commonly seen one of mine. Which is fine by me. I can slink around cons unnoticed in the other suit, just need to stay away from the dance floor.

Life Update
Posted 10 years agoGreetings all,
Got myself a few nasty colds between the last journal post and now. AB was likely not helping with anything. As of the moment, things aren't going too bad. My main car is down for the time being until I fix the transmission issue it's having now (nothing major, just needs some work and me to have some time).
In other news, I'm working on a few things for conventions as well as other projects. A few things are literally just on the backburner until I've dealt with other priorities. Been thinking of hosting an AMA for Maltese FurCon since I've been getting a few rumors here and there of stuff being said. One of which has me oddly perturbed. Someone has been saying that Maltese will charge for re-entry to the con. This is not true, once you've bought a 3 day badge, you can enter and leave as you wish all three days. The only badge that requires you to purchase a new one the next day is one day badges. As the name implies, they're good for the day you bought it on.
As for other such things, I'm looking forward to seeing Void soon ( commissioned
BVsuits ). Be cool to have what should be my last suit for a while. Though if you've been to AC, you'll notice that both Tom Sr. and Jr. can be seen running around at the same time. Both are ear tagged, and both have bells. Good luck figuring out which is me ;) And a derpy plan has been setup by
Zenfur and myself for some stupid fun while we're at AC!
More paragraphs? Not sure why I do these paragraph style updates. I'm thinking of doing some more writing. I'm getting new messages to update my old FanFic account and finish one of the longer running stories. It's slated for another ten or so chapters and I have the storyboard, I've just been procrastinating about doing it...
That's all I got! I'll be at the Autism Speaks 5k @ Uconn this Sunday. Diner meet is May 1st, Zen's Bowling thing is the 2nd and a Swap Meet is on the 3rd. I think I have a busy schedule... yay! Then my dad's birthday party is the weekend after that.

Anthro New England 2015
Posted 10 years agoOkay! It's time for another post con review and wrap up.
Today's subject: Anthro New England
Years in operation: First Year (2015)
This one is a bit different from my usual wrap ups and reviews. Going to break down as much of it as I can since there were some excellent points and some very awkward points as well.
The first one being the staff of the convention itself. ANE had a very interesting and diversely gifted staff. A seasoned and self taught DJ and lead of the A/V area, Drahck made sure to shine throughout the entire event with excellent selections for intros and outros to events run in the main ballroom. There were little if any missed opportunities for a well placed comment from the A/V director to add to the atmosphere or keep things moving. A liberal use of effects and music to keep things interesting and entertain the audience during segment changes. Assisted by DJ Code who has become more or less Drahck's cohort in musical crime. When Drahck is away, Code will play. Given many opportunities to step up and show what he knows, Code has proven that new talent is always welcome to the scene. Aiding in lighting control, mixing operations and audio/video recording, Code was given an excellent chance to show the audience a mastery of the A/V field.
Con-Ops and Registration were both well organized and run. The staff in this department was working hard even through small technical difficulties to keep things moving. Though Thursday did feature a late set-up/open for the registration area, it was kept moving and expedient by all of the staff. Friday through Sunday had no major issues or hiccups. Even an attendee whom had lost his badge was allowed a reprint, which most will realize is not allowed at many major or large conventions. The level of service and personal attention to attendees was noticed and enjoyed.
Logistics and Dealers was a little out of sorts Friday morning with one hour late soft opening of the Dealers area to Philanthropist and Sponsor badge holders. From what is known of the issue, this is not related to the staff themselves, but due to small issues with equipment and vendors who had needed extra time setting up due to late arrivals from either weather or travel related issues. As for logistical staff, they were as hard to find as they should be. Always in the shadows, but right there when something needed to be attended to.
Security and crowd control were minimal and almost unnoticed as there were no reported instances which required staff interventions. The security director, Pup, made a point to patrol the convention areas and check in on panels to ensure there were no problems. To my knowledge, there was only one reported complaint against the security department which in good faith I will not discuss. Fear not though, the complaint is nothing that should drive you off as an attendee, but did bring a review of situation responses to the table. Overall, this department performed exceptionally and ran a tight ship.
Now, the convention itself is covered. You might think I'm done, but you're not quite right. I am done with the review of the con, but not of the venue/hotel.
Where: Hyatt Regency, Cambridge MA
Event spaces were large enough to handle all attendees in a comfortable manner and without any need for large amounts of crowd control. Though hotel staff did see a need to manage the flow and gathering areas of attendees due to the layout of the general areas on the lobby level. Notable areas that saw hotel intervention were the immediate vicinity of the elevator lobby, the main floor lobby near the front desk, which did later receive tables and chairs to facilitate gathered attendees in a more friendly manner. A hard curfew of discussions in the main area appeared to be in effect for main lobby around 9pm. Groups of three or more were asked to move to a more "appropriate" area by hotel staff under the reasoning "Due to the design of the hotel, sound travels up the floors and can bother our other guests." This was not a large problem due to the amount of space for gathering, but did appear to be a slight point of awkward contention with some of the guests. The ballroom area was noticeably out of character for room temperatures at most furcons. During the Saturday night dance the room was found to be approximately 95 degrees at the warmest point. As most know, fursuiters generally do not do well in high heat or humidity, and the heat was seen to be taking a small toll on those who attended the dances. The A/V and convention staff made every effort to mitigate the temperature issues by opening external doors and placing fans near the doorways to get air moving and cool the room. It was noted that hotel engineering had been informed and the temperature would be lowered per request, but would later be returned to it's previous point for some unknown reason. This was actually an issue seen in quite a few of the hotel rooms themselves as well. My own room with three other suiters had called engineering with a complaint of the heat being too high regardless of how low the thermostat for the room had been set. Even housekeeping had noticed and commented on how the room was rather unbearable.
Now, that is a good chunk of negatives against the hotel itself, but let's not forget. I did tell you that this would be an interesting review. The hotel staff who served guests were extremely well mannered and considerate of the attendees and suiters even without any prior experience or knowledge of what to anticipate. Housekeeping and Concierge had no known complaints and had made sure to help cater to those attending as best as possible.
On a small side note, due to structural issues, the third and fourth floors of the parking garage were closed due to a collapse in a roughly 50x80 foot area of the garage ceiling and large amounts of snow still present on the upper floor of the garage. (This is a weather related issue and could not be anticipated or mitigated due to poor weather conditions.)
The surrounding areas of the venue were well accessible with aid of either Taxis, hotel shuttle or even just a ten minute walk. A personal suggestion to those looking for a good bite to eat, or something interesting to drink. The Asgard Irish Pub located at 350 Massachusetts Ave Cambridge MA (about 10 minutes at most on foot) had excellent wait staff and food. Even going so far as to offer a beer sampler to help us in choosing what we had wanted to drink with our meals.
That's all I have for you today. I hope this helps you to decide on whether you wish to attend.

I hope this helps you to decide on whether you wish to attend.

old, but not really old
Posted 11 years agoMyself and a couple other furs from CT drove over to RI to say good bye to a friend of ours who is going away to college today. He had an awesome going away party thrown, and was pretty happy seeing all the folks who showed up :)
Now, as some of you (dunno who reads this stuff, so humor me here) I complain a lot about being old and/or in pain. Basically it just boils down to I don't move so well anymore. Bending down/kneeling takes a massive toll on my knees. It's why you rarely see me sitting or kneeling. Standing makes life easier in the long run. Anyways... couldn't hear a damn thing while being yelled at today to turn around for a camera. I may as well be deaf with that damn head on.
In short, yay friend's party, boo being old/in pain/deaf

Maltese FurCon 2015 and you!
Posted 11 years agoGreetings folks! Prepare for a small sales pitch lol.
Have you been, or thought of becoming a dealer or vendor at a convention? Do you want to be able to display and sell your merchandise, art, creations or more? Maltese FurCon is open for dealers applications and registration for attendees. Information can be found at http://maltesefurcon.com/Dealer.html
In 2014, there was a very positive reaction to this event from both attendees and dealers alike. Last year saw Fourteen (14) dealers, and over 197 attendees. As we go forward into 2015, we're looking to see these numbers grow. The con will be taking place August 14-16 at the Embassy Suites in Waltham Massachusetts. A larger Dealers area, and much more is coming.
If you're attending, vending or otherwise, stop by and say hi :) I look forward to seeing more people come this year.

Tuesday, and may as well TMI!
Posted 11 years agoHi all!
It's Tuesday again. Guess I'll do another TMI. Ask away!

Too much time to think
Posted 11 years agoWork has been a bit slower than usual, and I've had a bit more time to think about some things in particular. The first major thing being why I actually wanted to suit. The answer to that is still pretty much the same. I'm a good bit less socially awkward with the suit. Though... now I'm mobility awkward XD can't win lol.
One of the other wonderfully fun topics in my head has been in regards to my sister's advice. Personally, I'm not too bothered by it, but my friends have been laying into me on it a bit more as of late. Getting tires of trying to brush off this specific topic too. Especially when people tell/ask me: "Aw, but you're so cute! How are you not dating anyone?" How am I cute damn it XD I am not cute, I crush hopes and dreams. I am like the most socially awkward person I know (okay, 2nd most... I know someone who beats me in this category now) and yet people still insist on asking this question.
Last but not least, what do you do with a girlfriend, how many times a day should you feed it? What kind of treats does it like? Or better yet, how do you get a girlfriend. I think I'm missing a quest here. Lol!
Hope you got a laugh out of this :)

Tom's Insights
Posted 11 years agoHi there everyone! I've been thinking about a few things regarding suiting and general interaction. So, as much as it is recommended to practice in front of a mirror, I am terrible at taking directions. My thing ha always been to wing it. Spontaneity has always worked out best in regards to my social interactions.
I will say though, I do advise some practice. Be it just simply going through the motions in your head and following through to practice the flow, or just practicing poses in front of the mirror.
Social interactions are always rather interesting and can vary based on who you deal with. If you're unsure of what to do or how to act around someone, a bit of hesitation is a good gauge. Some folks don't appreciate hugs and prefer a hand shake, or some are adverse to physical contact and you need to keep this in mind. Personally, I play along with anything, but if I can't safely see what I'm doing, I'll go for a handshake since it allows me to take some initiative and set up the height and distance so I'm not trying to flail about and make sure I don't impale someone with a horn, or step on someone.
Anyhow... that's all I have for now. Later!

So I got to updating my old accounts on a few sites and figured I'd put this back out there. I used to do a bit of writing, and published a couple stories to the site. I'm not a major writer obviously, and I don't do much on the graphic side.
I just like putting my free time towards working out a story and having the joy of playing characters through it. It was part of my love for Dungeons and Dragons as a kid. *casts LOUD NOISES* into the darkness.
Until next time o7

This convention has managed to surpass most, if not all expectations. With a resounding 197 attendees in their first year alone, this has been a monumental success. Raising $247.81 for the United States War Dogs Association, this event has picked up and is carrying on a legacy left by a previous convention.
The staff and volunteers dedicated their time to the attendees own care and enjoyment. With an active and visible security team, lively guest relations as well as a very pleasant atmosphere; this convention has definitely shown it is willing to step up and bring their best. When asked about their opinions of the convention, those attending were pleased and quite surprised with the level of preparedness being displayed by the staff. When reviewing the staff roster, it becomes apparent that there are many convention veterans and seasoned staff whom have made sure to use their knowledge and past experiences to provide the best possible level of service.
After experiencing the convention, you can tell that the location was researched extensively. A locale was found and secured, which would be the most receptive and open to the fandom. Lay out and design was taken seriously and worked on constantly to improve the overall flow. A simple, but efficient layout was employed within the dealers den. The classic “horseshoe” setup ensured that dealers received the same relative amount of passersby. Placement of the charity raffle and “adoption” raffle were also taken into account. As most seasoned attendees know, many conventions run a “community room” or zoo in which staff and attendees alike may mingle at any time day or night during the convention. There was a zoo featured here as well, and many could be found here during down time between panels and events, or when eating their lunches.
Dances were held all three nights of the convention and were run by either resident DJ Drahck or DJ Code. With sets (musical blocks) ordered with the pure intention to inspire you to dance and have fun. There was a definite variety present for all including an all ages dance Saturday with a slightly different and more family friendly genre for those seeking to bring their children. A “glow stick” friendly atmosphere with new and vetted dancers encouraged many to actively participate. For those attending the dances, there was even a bit of teaching being done so that others could easily get in on the fun.
Unlike most conventions, Maltese featured an “Event within an Event” - Zenfuhre (reference used). The special event, and on going story of the convention was a well rounded and carefully developed plot. The theft of the Maltese Pigeon, assassination of several key characters and framing of suspects. Overall, a well developed story with many twists and turns. Featuring impromptu acting, fully planned skits and even the occasional “hit” being placed on another staff member. Audience participation was present without question. Many participated in the “evidence gathering”, on stage performances and “witnessing” of the assassinations. Three members were awarded for their detective work, and recognized on stage for “solving” the mystery of the murders. At closing ceremonies, the story was retold, reports read and “arrests” made thanks to the many daring detectives and security personnel whom intercepted fleeing suspects.
As my final statement for this editorial, I must say in my own words “I have not seen a convention run this smoothly in years. Nor have I been part of such a delightful experience.” Working with the staff and having the chance to speak with many of the attendees was in itself likely the most rewarding part of this convention for me. Frankly, if you can find the time and transportation, this is a convention worth attending

AnthroCon 2014
Posted 11 years agoAlright, I owe people a wrap up of my #Anthrocon experience. The drive down was relatively uneventful, I only had a little weather delay regarding hitting the stormwall edge of this last tropical storm a couple times. Must admit, I did screw up and drive for eight hours with my arm out the window, resulting in a highly annoying single arm sunburn. Had probably the best room mates I`ve had at a con in ages. Spent a lot of time in suit and out. Had the pleasure of eating and attending events with friends both new and old.
Strangely this was probably the longest and shortest weekend of my life. It went by so quickly it might have only been a day, but it had also been so monumentally fun that there`s not a chance I could forget it!
There was a bit of a running gag about trying to get me to ask somone out. Not to mention a few herd and prey jokes lol. Which, when you realize how few prey class furs there are, it`s a bit funny in itself that we are a REALLY unbalanced ecosystem.
That`s it for me, thanks for having me guys and gals!

If you're going to AC in July, and wanna say hi or hang out there, give me a heads up. I'm rooming with some other furs and this will be my first year at AC.
