Yikes. Well, enough of that.
Posted 3 years agoI know I don't have a lot of traffic here, but just a heads up that I'm done with Twitter for the foreseeable future after the world's richest toddler reinstated the biggest threat to democracy currently existent.
When Elmo is finished shitting in his hand and smearing it all over the place, I'll consider returning, but for now I'm out. If anyone needs to connect, message me here or on Sofurry.
eta: I signed up for Mastodon, we'll see how that works out. You can find me at @tonygreyfox@mstdn.ca there.

I'm on the radio
Posted 4 years agoWell, a podcast, to be precise, but close enough.
One of my stories, "Come the Storm," was selected to be recorded for the Voice of Dog podcast! This story was a third-place finisher in the Rainfurrest 2014 writing contest, and for long-time readers who remember my story "Blood Bonds," the setting may just be familiar!
Check out part 1 here: https://www.thevoice.dog/episode/co.....ox-part-1-of-2 - part 2 comes out later this week!
(holy crap, three journals in the same year, I must be sick)

NEW ANTHOLOGY RELEASED!!!! (yes I'm excited)
Posted 4 years agoHey!
I'm pleased to report that A Swordmaster's Tale, an anthology focused on, well, sword masters of many kinds, has been released by Armoured Fox Press. I'm even more pleased that my story "Bridges" is the second story in the collection from a really great group of authors.
This story is, I feel, my best so far. Set in a near future that has faced some major challenges, it explores duty, honour and belief through the lens of a man - a bladesmith and samurai - from the far past who has found his consciousness lodged in the body of a future genetically-engineered coyote soldier. A mysterious call beckons him in this new world - one that he hopes will answer many questions.
I hope you will pick this up and give it a read - I truly love this story, and I hope you will too.
It's available on Amazon, at https://www.amazon.com/Swordmasters.....234&sr=8-2 - please look it up!

Hi! Still around!
Posted 4 years agoLike the title says. It's been a while since I posted here, but I am still doing the whole walking around and existing thing, so hooray for that.
Been writing here and there, all my stuff is going up on SoFurry. My newer hobby, watercolour painting, has been going on occasionally as well; I've reached a point where I may post a couple of pieces here when they have animals involved, and see what people think.
Beyond that, life continues apace. Working from home since last March has been a thing, but I've had my first Pfizer round and hopefully things will go back to normal-ish soon. The Sword Masters anthology from Armoured Fox should be in print this year, so you'll have the opportunity to pick up one of my stories; I've got two other stories out there in the mists still. I'm having urges to try and push a few stories to different markets this summer. You never know.
Anyhow. Hope all of you lot are doing all right.

Not dead
Posted 6 years agoLike it says, I'm not dead. I've just been busy, I guess? Work, life, etc., have been pretty steady, so I'm just kinda rolling with it all.
Not writing as much as I should, either. I've got three pieces that are floating around waiting for publication - one piece will be in Armoured Fox's Sword Masters anthology, expected sometime next year, I believe; I've got another piece that's tied to what may be a stalled anthology from a few years back, and a third in a collectively self-published antho that hopefully will also come out next year.
In the meantime, most of anything I post is over on SoFurry, so keep an eye on me there.
I'm also on hiatus from VancouFur and con running in general - five years as the president of the board was about ten years too long, I think, so it's break time. Plus, due to work travel, I'll actually be missing the con this year. Such is life.
Anyhow, yeah. Still here. *waves a flag*

I still exist, yadda yadda
Posted 7 years agoJust figured I'd point out that I'm still alive and still doing my thing. I've been pretty burned out on a lot of things lately, but such is life. Most of my new stories are being posted over on Sofurry, since I find the visibility is far better there than here; I'm still submitting material to various places and hoping that I sell some more pieces soon.
I'll be at VancouFur this coming week as well, running a few panels as usual.
Life continues apace.

Seriously, not this sh*t again.
Posted 9 years agoSo, years ago, I had some dude steal some of my stories, rework them to his own preferences, and post them to some obscure forum someplace as his own work. I had that dealt with, and carried on with life.
Since then, said person has maintained on places like fanfiction.net that this was nothing but a misunderstanding, that I had been in touch with him and knew him to be an honorable soul, and so forth. Oh, and someone made an account under my name on that site essentially to agree with him. I emailed the admins and nothing happened. Oh well, no biggie.
Today I get some notes here asking if I am this guy, because one of my stories appeared to have been modified and posted on FIMfiction.net. The poster? Same guy. Now, I have never rewritten my stories to be MLP-themed pieces, and while I've got an account - under my own name - on FIMfiction, I've never posted anything there. Weird shit-o-meter: pegged.
I go over to check this out. Sure enough, not one, but EIGHT of my stories have been rewritten - almost word for word - but changed so that instead of my Vancouver Fur characters, they're MLP characters. And the situations they're in have been changed into that world.
This is a LOT of work to put into stealing a bunch of stories to get internet points on fanfiction sites, I tell you.
The mods on FIMfiction have brought down the banhammer already, though the stories are all still up as of this writing. Shouldn't take long to get rid of them. Fanfiction.net, I dunno. I identified the six stories he's posted there and provided links to them on Sofurry. (Some of those have been on SF so long they have two-digit IDs. They definitely have provenance there.) I'll wait and see if they respond in a few days; if not, I'm intending to file a DMCA takedown. Because seriously, fuck that guy.
Does this mean I'm a popufur now?

My 2015 publications
Posted 9 years agoI should've done this before the Ursa Major Awards nomination period, but my brain is a few months behind, it seems. Since the Coyotl Awards nominations are closing in, I'll put it out anyhow!
I was busy in 2015 publications-wise: four stories published.
"Distant Shores" - The Furry Future (FurPlanet, edited by Fred Patten)
"Crimson on Copper" - Inhuman Acts (FurPlanet, edited by Ocean Tigrox)
"Come The Storm" - Menagerie of Heroes (FurPlanet, Rainfurrest Charity Anthology, now out of print)
"Bears, Repeating" - Heat #12 (Sofawolf Press)
Of those, I have to say my favorite is probably "Crimson on Copper" - any time a reviewer says something I wrote could be an Asimov story with furries, I kind of take that to heart, y'know? "Distant Shores" is a very close second though, because SF is my baby.
I also recommend nominating Furry Future and Inhuman Acts; both are fantastic works.
I'm off to nominate stuff myself - Coyotls close at the end of March!

Stuff and things post-VancouFur
Posted 9 years agoHey guys! Long time no type. Sorry about that, I've been a little busy lately.
Figured I'd do an update now that VancouFur is done again for another year. Honestly, I've had so much on my mind through the last few months that it's been hard to focus on individual projects, so there hasn't been a lot to report.
Let's talk about VancouFur! It went very well. Being the president of the BC Anthropomorphic Events Association - which is the organization that oversees VancouFur - gives me a different perspective, so I spend a lot of time handling the meta-aspect. With the Rainfurrest debacle fresh in everyone's minds we've had a lot of things to think about and handle behind the scenes, and I spent a lot of time hoping that nothing explodes, things stay civil and enjoyable for everyone, and so forth. So, when the con went as smoothly as it did, that was a huge relief!
Personally, I hosted a bunch of writing-related panels and events. My second round of Turkey Readings went really well - we had a great crowd that enjoyed itself and donated $250 for our charity, OWL Canada in the process. Mostly they did that by making me do silly things while reading bad fiction. No problem! I'm considering running a second one next year - one general-audience, and one of bad adult fanfic. I also hosted another fun flash fiction jam, a writer meet-and-greet, and two board-related meetings. Lots of fun all around.
Beyond that, not much going on. I kind of fried my brain last year with heavy writing and am taking some time to get back into it. I've got my novel project on the go, sort of, and a story idea floating around as well. I need to get into more random writing though - just to keep my hand in.
Anyhow, that's where I'm at. Watch for some fursuit pictures in the near future. I'll try and get some writing posted for you soon!

RF 2015 after-action report
Posted 10 years agoWell, that was a con. As I said last journal, I spent a lot of it volunteering this year - 20 hours in the art show, to be precise. It was actually pretty fun, as I got to interact with a lot of people that way, and feel like part of the con. (And fanboy slightly when Rukis dropped by to put up art and such...)
Outside of that I managed to get to a few things. I got on mic in Buck Hopper's voice acting panel this time, which was fun, and attended a pair of book launches - the Inhuman Acts launch, and the RF Charity Anthology. I haven't interacted a huge amount with the writing community outside of panels in the past, so this was nice - all the authors signed everyone else's copies, so that was kind of fun. (And the writing GoH told me I was one of the first furry authors she ran across before knowing of the fandom. Ego boost +1) I also had the chance to socialize with some of the other writers informally, which was great as well. I'm usually a background kitsune, putting myself out in places like that is a challenge.
Anyhow, came home with a whack of books, 3 of which I've got stories in. Feels good!
Now to try and develop some new story ideas, maybe open for commissions again, and see what happens.

Rainfurrest time!
Posted 10 years agoRainfurrest is coming this week! Woohoo!
I don't have the time or enthusiasm to punch out a fancy Rainfurrest meme, so here's the plan:
- I will be at the con!
- I will be rooming with
wbwolf as usual!
- I will NOT be taking on the writing competition this year. As much as I enjoyed it the last two years, I decided I'd do something else this time around to enjoy the con rather than spend most of the first two or three days hiding someplace with my laptop.
- Therefore, I will be volunteering in the art show, and spending my time there!
- Yes, that makes total sense.
- Big news: I have TWO stories being released at Rainfurrest! "Crimson on Copper" is appearing in Inhuman Acts, while "Come the Storm" is part of the Rainfurrest charity anthology (the general-audience one). Both of those are a) being released at special events, so check those out, and b) available at the Furplanet booth in the dealer's den. I also have two other items available from earlier this year - "Distant Shores," in The Furry Future (Furplanet) and "Bears, Repeating" is in Heat #12 from Sofawolf Press. So... go buy my stuff. Lots of it. ALL OF IT!!!
That's all the key points. If you see me at the con, feel free to say hello!

VancouFur 2016 writing track submissions wanted!
Posted 10 years agoVancouFur 2016 is coming – and it's time to start planning for another excellent collection of writing panels!
We had a very successful writing track in 2015, and my hope as track lead is to expand on the success from last year. I want a range of interesting and entertaining topics for our attendees to take part in. To that end, I'm looking for two things:
- Panel ideas
- Panelists
I have some ideas in mind, so if you are going to be at VancouFur and would like to participate as a panelist but don't have any ideas on your end, I'd be happy to provide some suggestions! Alternately, if you'd like to present something specific, please let me know.
We will have some set panels – a writers' meet-and-greet, my variation on a Flash Fiction Jam (loads of fun last time!) and Turkey Readings for our charity – but beyond that I'm open to thoughts on what to present.
If you will be attending the convention and are interested in being part of the VancouFur 2016 writing track, please drop me a note at conbook[at]vancoufur.ca – I look forward to hearing from you!

Two more!
Posted 10 years agoToday was a good day. Why? Because I got not one, but two acceptance letters!
A fantasy story I originally wrote for the Rainfurrest writing competition last year, "Come the Storm." will be appearing in the Rainfurrest charity anthology! I had to extend the version that won me third place in the competition, and I'll have to do some more modifications for the final edit, but I'm pleased of this! It's a donation that will support this year's charity, so that's rather cool.
And! A story I threw together at high speed for Furplanet's forthcoming noir anthology was accepted. I'm especially thrilled about this one, as noir is kind of right in my wheelhouse writing-wise; I've always credited Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe stories as being a major turning point in how I approach my writing. I also wrote this one really quickly, after scrapping my first attempt, and came out with a rather fun dieselpunk noir piece. It needs a new name since the original apparently gives away the plot, and I have to do some rewrites on this one too, but it's in!
So that's four anthologies I'll be part of this year, along with The Furry Future from earlier in the year and Heat, this summer. Plus I'm still waiting to hear back from Rabbit Valley about my submission for their fur-on-skin anthologies... so another's still hanging.
Man, I wish I had more time to write, with all this!

Update, open for commissions!
Posted 10 years agoHey! I've been exceptionally busy lately, what with VancouFur just recently wrapped up and a string of anthology submissions now closed. (I've got outstanding submissions to a noir anthology, one of Rabbit Valley's fur-to-skin projects, and the Rainfurrest charity anthology right now.) Between that and the convention - designing and printing the conbook, running the very successful writing track, and working with the Board of Directors to get our not-for-profit society registered (almost there!) - it's been nuts.
I've had a couple of weeks to relax a bit, and I've got some of my creative juices flowing again. Right now I'm working on a new Team Players story with some fun adult bits, but I'd like to work on something else too.
So: I'm going to open for commissions again! Here's how I'm going to do it this time around...
I am open NOW and will take applications for TWO stories, of up to 5,000 words each, to be completed by the end of May. (I'll be away on vacation for a bit in April, and may be away for work in early May, so I'm giving myself some leeway.)
Applications will close on March 28, and if I have more than two applications I'll decide which I want to work with and let the commissioners know at that time.
Pricing is as follows: $25 for the first 2000 words, plus $10 for each 1000 words additional, capped at $55 for 5000 words.
To apply: send me a PM here with a summary of what you would like in terms of plot, characters, and setting, as well as themes that you will want included. I'm happy to write anything from G to X. I do have some things I won't write and will let you know if your theme is out of my range. I like a challenge, so feel free to give me one! Let me know what word count you're looking for, as well.
If you're accepted, I'll be asking for the base $25 up front, and whatever additional based on word count on delivery. I'll give you a progress report and allow you some adjustments at that point if I'm off target.
If you have questions please do ask. I'm looking forward to seeing what turns up!

So, uh, that VancouFur thing...
Posted 10 years ago...is already over, and I was so busy it really wasn't in the cards for me to write anything here about it.
Uh, I hope everyone enjoyed themselves though!
I know that staff is thrilled at how things went. We jumped from 600 attendees last year to 726 this year, and had 141 fursuits in the parade - that was awesome. I wore Patch for that, but didn't do anything in him beyond that. I'm looking at getting the head adjusted to give me some more visibility.
In related news, the Board of Directors for VancouFur (which I'm currently the president of) is incorporating as a not-for-profit society called the BC Anthropomorphic Events Association, which will make for lots of good benefits for the convention going forward. That's taken a lot of work and effort but it's come together well.
Next year we'll be at a new hotel, the Executive Inn in Richmond which currently hosts BronyCan and does a great job with them. More space and more flexibility for our attendees. Onward and upward!

Next year we'll be at a new hotel, the Executive Inn in Richmond which currently hosts BronyCan and does a great job with them. More space and more flexibility for our attendees. Onward and upward!
2015 is looking busier...
Posted 11 years ago...because my story "Bears, Repeating" just got accepted for Sofawolf Press' Heat #12, which will be released in the spring, usually at Anthrocon.
That's two anthologies I'll be appearing in next year! And I've got a story underway for a third to be submitted by the end of this year, plus there are two that are taking submissions into the spring that are absolutely right up my alley (one's a noir anthology, the other is ROAR volume 6, on the topic of 'scoundrels'). And then there's the Rainfurrest charity anthology, for which I'll be extending my third-place story from the RF writing competition to submit.
That's six potential anthologies/magazines I could get into next year. I think I'm making some inroads with this whole writing thing...

Sold another one!
Posted 11 years agoI'm thrilled to report that one of my stories will be appearing in a new Furplanet anthology going on sale at Further Confusion in January!
"The Furry Future" is a science-fiction anthology edited by the rather renowned Fred Patten; it's a general-audience book, and will be available January 15.
My story "Distant Shores" will be part of the book. A human, lost in space after an accident during an early mission to Mars, is found and revived from cold sleep by an interstellar colonization ship years later - a ship crewed entirely by genetically engineered humanoid mice, rats and rabbits. While she adapts to the passage of time and her new situation, the crew finds itself facing its own challenges with having a human aboard.
I'm thrilled to be in this anthology - it's going to be populated by some very good authors, and being a GA piece is even nicer (though I enjoy selling erotic works too). If you're an SF fan I recommend picking this anthology up!

Rainfurrest report
Posted 11 years agoWell, it's come and gone again, and it's all over but the con crud.
RF was generally enjoyable again this year. I could have done more and gotten more involved but what I did was entertaining. I think the fursuit parade was the longest I've ever worn Patch... I really need to learn more performance in suit. (Mind you, following a White Rabbit suit that was drawing plenty of attention kind of didn't help...)
I was on two writing panels, which I think went well enough. The writing dialogue panel could have been a bit more intelligent on my part, I guess, but I think the one on writing action scenes was solid.
Oh, and I finished third in the writing competition. Considering the field of fantastic authors and
kandrel won, I think that's pretty damn good. (Plus,
kyell was one of the judges.)
So yeah. Pretty good con. Next up, I'll probably drift through Howloween and then it'll be VancouFur time!

Rainfurrest!
Posted 11 years agoI should do a fancy meme here, but I'ma just do it this way...
I'm going to Rainfurrest!
I'm rooming with
wbwolf!
I'll be there Wednesday night to Sunday, driving down for once!
I will be fursuiting (badly) in Patch!
I'll mostly be hanging out in the panel rooms for the writing track!
I hope to repeat my win from last year in the writing competition!
I will be presenting on two writing panels: Writing Realistic & Interesting Dialogue (Friday, 9 pm) and Lights! Camera! Action! Writing Action Scenes (Sunday, noon)!
I hope to find the gaming room and give some games a try if there's room!
Feel free to say hello - I'm kind of reserved but if I can get myself into the right mode I can be chatty!
Uh... yeah, that covers things, I guess... see you all there!

Current Projects
Posted 11 years agoI'm a busy fox lately! It's submission season, with a bunch of anthologies all accepting works shortly. Here's what I'm up to.
- "Bears, Repeating" - submitting this one, with m/m and m/f content, to Heat for this year's round. It's complete, I just need to submit it before the end of the month.
- "The Grind" - a m/m piece set on the high stakes poker circuit. I'm kind of tentative on this one; it started out with a crime/noir-type feel but I'm not sure I can resolve it properly. Plus it seems to want to write long. I may revamp as a relationship piece and still submit it to Heat, but I'm not totally sure.
- "Touch" (working title) - this started (as "Bears" did) from a prompt I got from Twitter; it's an SF piece featuring humans and engineered furries. It was intended for a Rabbit Valley anthology but I'm going to repurpose it and take out the sexy bits to submit to a Furnation furry SF book scheduled for not long from now. I think tll work better as a straight conflict piece rather than fighting for the relationship aspects that were originally in place.
- Untitled - I still want to do something for the Rabbit Valley antho - there are three, all dealing with furry/human relationships, but I was aiming for the M/F focused book. I've got some ideas.
Once all those are out, I may consider doing some commission work again. If my fingers don't fall off.

On Feedback
Posted 11 years agoI've come to the realization and acceptance that it's difficult, as a writer, to get significant feedback on my work in this fandom. It's not too bad when posting in places like here or Sofurry, where I'll at least see favorites and occasional comments after positing something new. But I have received a total of one comment ever (outside of friends, partners, etc) on the stuff I've sold for print publication.
So you can imagine my excitement when I saw a review of the "Taboo" anthology pop up on Flayrah. I've been hoping for someone to review that at some point. And it's by a long time respected member of the fandom too, which is rather impressive. I leaped in to see what his thoughts were.
Unfortunately, it's hard to review an anthology, so "Dates" was only included in the overall summary of the book. And the description of the story is, well... Kind of not my impression of what I wrote.
The review singles out a couple of stories by some very good authors, so that's nice. But now I'm wondering about the overall impression my work is making, and whether it really is as good as I think it is. I mean, I understand getting overshadowed by authors like Kandrel, but when the reviewer interprets my story and characters that far off, it makes me wonder.
Or I'm just being oversensitive. I dunno. A bit disappointed though.
